As one of America’s largest homeowner’s associations, Tahoe Donner owns and operates a wide variety of recreational facilities. Some, like the Tahoe Donner Golf Course and Bikeworks, are open to everyone. Others, like the Northwoods Pool and Tennis Center, are private amenities open only to Tahoe Donner members and their guests. Private amenities require a Daily Access Fee for entry. See below for more details.

DAILY ACCESS FEE

Tahoe Donner’s private amenities are open exclusively to members and their guests. A Daily Access Fee and member ID or transferable guest card are required for entry. The Daily Access Fee is waived for members who have paid the Recreation Fee. Members are Tahoe Donner Association homeowners and their families. Each property may have up to eight qualifying members with their own unique ID number (four included and up to four more for a per-person annual fee). The Daily Access Fee is $10 for members age 7+ (without a Recreation Fee paid by the property). Guests are those accompanying members or using a transferable guest card. Each property may have up to two transferable guest cards, each admitting up to four guests. The Daily Access Fee for guests age 7+ is $12 with a member present or $17 with a transferable guest card.

RECREATION FEE

The Recreation Fee grants unlimited access for up to four eligible members at all private Tahoe Donner amenities. The 2022/23 Rec Fee is $395 and is valid May 1, 2022 through April 30, 2023. Up to four additional members can be added for $145 each. Call Member Services at (530) 587-9400, ext. 0 for more information.

COMING IN JUNE: DISTRICT-WIDE FIRE BAN WATCH FOR MOST RECENT UPDATES ON FIRE BANS AND OTHER EMERGENCY PREPAREDENESS NEWS BY VISITING TRUCKEEFIRE.ORG

As we’ve all seen, the fire danger in California has continued to increase, and the Truckee area is no exception. Many of the most destructive fires in state history have occurred in recent years. Each year, the Truckee Fire Protection District responds to unattended or improperly extinguished residential campfires that escape the fire ring and start a wildfire. If this happens on a windy day, it can be devastating to our community. Thus, a seasonal fire ban is enacted ahead of the hot, dry and windy months of fire season. CAUSES OF EXTREME FIRE DANGER

THE GRASS IS GREENER By ALI DICKSON

on Tahoe Donner's Side

After extensive renovations to the Tahoe Donner Golf Course in 2020 and 2021, golfers of all skill levels can look forward to a pristine alpine golf experience like never before. Tahoe Donner Golf Course Superintendent Ram Sena and Golf Pro Jeff Hwang have been eager to take the golf course’s recent improvements to the next level while honoring Tahoe Donner’s unique golf culture.

First reopened in 2021 after over $2 million in renovations, the Tahoe Donner Golf Course is back and better than ever. With established greens after their transplant in 2020, assimilation of new tees and fairways, better integration of new features and much more, stepping onto the course in 2022 will bring a unique alpine golf experience. “Tahoe Donner has always been a destination,” says Ram Sena, golf course superintendent. “But now, we have the latest course renovation in this area. We completed upgrades like modifications to tee boxes and fairway renovations on holes 10 and 11. However, our biggest renovation was the greens replacement – it’s been huge. We completely resurfaced the greens and part of the green surrounds. Greens are where we spent probably 85-90% of our time, so we want to make sure the surface is perfect.” On the course this season, be sure to appreciate the new and exciting renovations that include: • Over 3.5 acres of fresh greens • Reshaping of holes 4, 10, 11 + 12 • Fairways improved around holes 3, 10, 11 + 15 • Reshaped tee boxes on holes 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 14 + 16 When it comes to Tahoe Donner golf, though, catering to the community is just as important as catering to the course. Jeff Hwang, Tahoe Donner’s new golf pro, shares, “My whole goal is to hear that, when someone says, ‘Where do you golf in Truckee?’ Tahoe Donner is at the top of their list. A lot of the golf experience is the service and the quality and what we have to provide the membership, as well as the professionalism of the staff and how people are spoken to when they walk in.” Continued on Page 8

THE GRASS IS GREENER ON TAHOE DONNER'S SIDE

THE MAN BEHIND THE GREENS

It is due to the hard work of Ram Sena that Tahoe Donner’s golf course has become one of the most carefully managed courses in the community. Starting at Tahoe Donner in summer 2021, Ram brought experience from high-end golf clubs in Chicago as well as across California. His expertise in all-season golf allows him to keep an unforgettable course at Tahoe Donner through blazing summers and freezing winters.

“He put the course in some of the best shape we've ever seen it with the smallest crew we've ever had,” Jeff recalls. “Typically, his job would be to direct from the sidelines, but he has been on the course, hand mowing and working for up to 16 hours a day – six or seven days a week. With a crew of about half of what we normally have, the progress has been incredible.” Especially with the new greens, Ram and his team have been crucial to ensuring that the membership plays on the best surface. Jeff explains, “When you put all new greens in, you don't just lay it down and walk away. It's like a baby – in the first couple of years, you're going to get less sleep. Ram was probably on this property more than anyone in Tahoe Donner. If you talk to our members on the course, they'll tell you that it's probably some of the best conditions we've had as a golf course in 10 or 15 years. With such little time and such a small staff, it was quite a feat what he has done.”

JOIN THE CLUB

Have you heard? One of the best ways to get the most out of Tahoe Donner’s golf course and connect with the community is to join one of the many golf clubs! Jeff notes, “Becoming a member of a club helps to get people integrated into the golf course, because 30-40% of our daily play comes from those clubs. Our ladies’ clubs, nine-hole clubs and men’s clubs do a lot of that groundwork when it comes to getting members familiar and excited about golf.”

TAKE A SWING AT A LESSON

If you’re looking to get into golf or level up your skills, take advantage of Tahoe’s most recently renovated course and professional instructors. Add in quality rental gear, and you’ll improve your game in no time. To learn more and book a lesson, visit tahoedonner.com/golf.

A WHOLE NEW PRO SHOP

Quality courses deserve quality gear, and the Pro Shop at Tahoe Donner is stocked with new, top-of-the-line golf essentials from Callaway Golf in addition to custom orders. Having exclusively signed with Callaway, Golf Pro Jeff Hwang has firsthand experience when it comes to what gear makes for a great game of golf. Whether you need a ball, gloves, driver or advice, Jeff is able to tee you off in the right direction.

COURSE FEATURES

Whether playing to enjoy a social golf outing or improve your game, lifelong friendships and skills are gained when you join a golf club.

While it certainly helps that Tahoe Donner’s course is newly renovated – and is only improving – the people that encompass the association’s golf culture have created an experience you can’t find anywhere else in Tahoe, thanks to the continuing work of James Murtagh along with Jeff and Ram. “What the team is excited about now," shares Ram, "is growing the culture that we can give to members as both a local destination and a club away from home.”

THERE'S

a new chef

IN TOWN INTRODUCING MATT HALE, TAHOE DONNER’S NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF

by ALI DICKSON

If you’re looking for a fresh take on familiar favorites this summer, look no further than the menu at The Lodge Restaurant & Pub, now overseen by Executive Chef Matt Hale. Joining the team in April overlapping with Chef Lew’s retirement, Matt’s passion for local ingredients and the Tahoe community will take you on a culinary journey sure to spark any taste bud. THE EARLY YEARS Raised in Sierra City, Matt was surrounded by fresh, local food from a young age. His parents opened a food-sharing co-op, and when he moved to Sierraville at age 11, they were able to grow a large garden and orchard. Learning how to garden and raise local food quickly became a passion. Pair that with a love of fishing and foraging, and you have a foolproof recipe for a delicious career. As Matt realized he wanted to pursue the culinary arts, he stayed in the area, focusing on his program while working on wildfires. “I went to school in South Lake Tahoe. They didn't have a culinary school, but they had a culinary program. That meant that all our training was in real working kitchens with instructors that were really chefs. Somehow, they made the time in their busy schedules to teach us kids how to cook.” LEAVING CALIFORNIA Matt worked his way up throughout the Tahoe area at restaurants like Squaw Creek, where he cooked for over 10 years. The high energy and constant dynamic were enticing. Looking for a change of scenery and a step toward the title of executive chef, though, Matt’s eyes soon turned north. “I wanted to try something different. I always wanted to live in the Pacific Northwest – to see what it was like up there in the rainforest when I’ve grown up in the high desert pretty much my whole life.” This led him to the executive chef role at Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington, along the Columbia River Gorge.

Taking over the kitchen that had gone through three chefs in two years was a challenge, but he enjoyed the challenge. When he found spare time, he enjoyed grouse hunting and foraging for huckleberries and mushrooms. “I loved it for the first couple of years. But then, after more than six years of spending 9 to 10 months in rain, I realized I really don't like being soggy.” Training his executive sous chef to take the lead as head chef, Matt wanted to return to his roots and move closer to his family. RETURNING TO THE SIERRA In 2021, Matt made the move back to the Tahoe area. “I became a little burned out in the hotel business, and with COVID, I just needed a break. I wanted to be closer to my family. And there were more important things in my life than making good money and working constantly. I wanted to get myself grounded again, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to get back into hotel restaurant life with the 60–70hour workweeks.” Instead of returning to the dining world, Matt made a different move and turned to wildfire. “I spent pretty much the whole summer fighting fire in 2021 in Tahoe on an engine crew. I thought I was going to get back into fire – I enjoyed myself and had a lot of time to ground myself and spend time in the garden and with family.” Just as Matt was settling into his fire routine, one of his old general managers reached out in need of a chef for a resort in South Lake Tahoe. While helping in that kitchen, he happened to hear about an open position in Tahoe Donner. TAHOE DONNER SUMMER FUN GUIDE 2022 |

THERE'S A NEW CHEF IN TOWN

JOINING THE LODGE Matt knew of The Lodge’s reputation before learning of the chef opening. “I've always heard great things about Tahoe Donner; it's always been one of those places I've wanted to work. The quality of the food and service is incredible, and there isn’t a philosophy to work your team into the ground. When it’s busy, we work hard, and when it's not, you can enjoy your free time.” Returning to be with his family and his passions, the balance at Tahoe Donner provided a chance to stay grounded while taking new chances. “It finally feels like I've made it to a point in my life where I've got what I've been working so hard for. I have a great place to live and a great place to work.” Not only will Matt oversee The Lodge, but, as executive chef, he will provide input to all restaurants in Tahoe Donner. Steve Turner, director of food and beverage, shares, “I am excited to have Matt joining and leading our culinary team. With his passion and expertise with fresh, high-quality, locally sourced ingredients, all of Tahoe Donner’s food and beverage offerings will improve greatly. Additionally, his mentoring and culinary coaching will improve the entire team’s skill sets. I am looking forward to all our changes, improvements and culinary elevations to come – and I know the community is too.” As Matt continues to grow at The Lodge and beyond, he has the support of a talented team and hungry fan base. To experience Matt’s culinary skill, be sure to visit The Lodge Restaurant & Pub, open Wednesday through Sunday. Learn more on page 25 or at tahoedonner.com/the-lodge. WHAT IS MATT COOKING UP AT THE LODGE? When it comes to Matt’s culinary interests, local foods come to mind. Whether it’s fruit, vegetables or protein, Matt has been creating ties with local farms and ranches around the area. In particular, he has a passion for providing fresh fish. “I'm definitely a big fish guy. I’m very into the sustainability side of fish, and I love to fish – mostly catch-and-release.” The Lodge’s menu is full of favorites, but Matt is excited to add in fresh, local twists. Prior to the summer menu debut,

new dishes will be slowly unveiled throughout the month of June, including a new wild mushroom appetizer. “I want to create more shareable items – for instance, a charcuterie board with great local meats and cheeses and fruit when they are in season. Also, I want to provide specials for ingredients that are available for a short time only because of the growing season. If we have something for a brief time from Sierra Valley Farms or one of the other smaller farms in the area, it can become our special for the weekend. There aren’t a lot of farms that can keep up with the consistent business volume of a restaurant year-round, so it’s fun to pick and choose what’s in season to play around with and come up with different ideas based on what farmers are growing.” In addition to more shareable items and local standouts, more vegetarian and gluten-free options will be made available as well to cater to a wider variety of interests and dietary restrictions. Matt also is looking forward to bringing wine-maker dinners and beer-tasting receptions in the future. Most of all, Matt is just excited to get back in the kitchen and get to creating. “It’s why we become chefs – to cook. It’s the fun stuff to be involved and be a part of something, whether it’s getting a burn on my arm from the oven every once in a while or finding that camaraderie in the kitchen. I really want to be part of everything and help the rest of the team develop and grow.”

TAHOE DONNER

TRAILS (530) 582-9672 | TAHOEDONNER.COM/TRAILS The Tahoe Donner Trail System is the ultimate playground for hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers and equestrians with more than 60 miles of trails and fire access service roads spanning over 5,000 acres. With thousands of users, horses and dogs, it is important that we all work together and observe basic trail rules and etiquette to keep the backcountry safe and enjoyable for everyone.

TRAIL CONNECTIVITY

The Tahoe Donner Trail System is one of the greatest assets to the association and its members. Accessing the trail is easy when using a Tahoe Donner street connection or one of the many larger facility trailheads like Alder Creek Adventure Center. Whether your passion lies in extended hikes for exploring, a quick run after work, a lunch mountain bike ride or a connection to larger trail systems like the Pacific Crest Trail on your horse, Tahoe Donner trails have much to offer. Try a new trail and adventure to the outer loops while enjoying an unforgettable experience in the Sierra. When out on the trails, remember to share the experience with others you may encounter. Expect to see children, horses, bikes and dogs, and maybe even a bear or coyote. Take a few moments to reflect on your responsibilities on the trail. When you come upon another person enjoying the wilderness, greet them. A smile goes far beyond the trail. Pick up a trail map, keep it close and go explore!

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES Creating a vibe of patience, appreciation, compassion, stewardship and community is vital to ensuring enjoyment by all who utilize any trail system. The next time you’re out on the trails, observe the following: • SHARE the trail. Tahoe Donner trails are designed and maintained for multiple users. Expect to see all user types and abilities.

TRAIL MAP + WILDFLOWER GUIDE A detailed Summer Trail Map and Tahoe Donner Wildflower Guide are available at major trailheads, Member Services, Alder Creek Adventure Center and at tahoedonner.com/trails.

• ENGAGE with your surroundings. Stay present and be prepared for wildlife encounters, changing weather and unexpected trail conditions. • OBSERVE yielding etiquette, safe speeds and "Leave No Trace" practices. • GREET fellow trail users, especially when approaching from behind, and communicate kindly with each other. • MANAGE the animal you’re with. Whether it’s a dog or horse, you have a responsibility to the animal and other trail users to maintain control at all times. • REPORT trail issues by calling (530) 582-9672 or emailing trails@tahoedonner.com. YIELDING ETIQUETTE

• Check the weather forecast so you know what to expect when you hit the trail, and always bring water, snacks, sun protection and extra layers. • Don’t play on muddy trails. Letting them dry out allows them to remain narrow and helps reduce erosion. • Stay on designated trails. Don’t cut switchbacks, take shortcuts or create new trails; it is damaging to the fragile ecosystem. • Pick up after your pet. Litter bags are available at most trailheads. Please bring them, use them and dispose of them in a trash can. Leaving dog waste bags on trails is littering! • Respect our neighbors and stay on Tahoe Donner property at all times. Property boundaries are posted; please observe them. • Take and share photos of your hike or adventure to inspire others to enjoy the wilderness of the Tahoe Donner Trail System.

Expect to encounter fellow recreationists each time you head out on a trail. Although common sense goes a long way when using busy trails, we ask that all trail users observe the following yielding etiquette tips: • Horseback riders always have the right of way but should be prepared for inexperienced trail users who are unfamiliar with how to act around horses. Horseback riders should avoid high-traffic and multi-use trails whenever possible. • When approaching someone on horseback, announce yourself and ask the rider for the best way to pass. • Bikers must always yield to hikers and horseback riders. Stop and get off the bike, then step downhill and off trail to let them pass. Always announce your presence when approaching people and horses. • Uphill traffic always has the right of way. • Those with dogs must yield to others. Call your dog to your side when passing others, and never let your pet jump on or greet others without their permission.
