THE WOMAD STORY WOMAD – The World’s Festival – is the brainchild of Peter Gabriel “Pure enthusiasm for music from around the world led us to the idea of WOMAD in 1980 and thus to the first Festival in 1982. The festivals have always been wonderful and unique occasions and have succeeded in introducing an international audience to many talented artists.” “Equally important, the festivals have also allowed many different audiences to gain an insight into cultures other than their own through the enjoyment of music. Music is a universal language, it draws people together and proves, as well as anything, the stupidity of racism”. However, the first festival was almost the last after the high costs of the event led the company into financial ruin. Peter and Genesis reformed for one single show which rescued the company and since then WOMAD has held festivals globally in over 30 countries from Abu Dhabi to South Africa, Sardinia to the USA and of course, where it all began, in the UK.

With the festival celebrating its 35th anniversary year, it is more relevant today than ever as a place where borders dissolve and where nationality is rendered unimportant. WOMAD’s Global Festival Director Chris Smith said: “WOMAD still, after thirty-five years, has the power to surprise people and give them a musical experience they’ve never had before.” “As well as providing a festival experience like no other, we increasingly, in the age of Brexit and Donald Trump, feel we have a responsibility to champion those who are willing to share their culture with others, celebrate variety and build bridges not walls”

WELCOME - NAU MAI HAERE MAI Te-na- koutou katoa Nau mai, haere mai ki raro i te maru o te maunga tito-hea a Taranaki. Our majestic mountain Maunga Taranaki greets and welcomes you here to this, the 13th presentation of WOMAD NZ in Taranaki. WOMAD brings you a sizzling hot line up with big hitters – the British Two Tone & Ska band ‘The Specials’ straight outta Coventry, feisty Balkan Serbian band Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra and one of the pioneers of electro swing, Austrian band Parov Stelar. Not forgetting our NZ artists with Marlon Williams who joins us fresh from opening for the Boss - Bruce Springsteen, and the festival wouldn’t be complete without NZ reggae, this year featuring Sons of Zion. We’re also keeping it fresh with our new elements; from World of Words, a celebration of the written and spoken word that sees the return of the Pinetum Stage, to ‘Imaginable’ a visual, poetic choreographic site installation by renowned projection artist Tim Gruchy that will transform the Gables house as dusk descends. Joining us all the way from France is the quirky and entertaining La Cymbalobylette, a mechanical music machine reminiscent of the roaring twenties that will feature on-site.

Round the world in three days a visual and sensory feast of music, food and entertainment; a schedule packed with hidden gems of the music world with over 300 artists representing 21 countries, across seven stages. Our gratitude and thanks go to our partners who through their generous and ongoing commitment have ensured that WOMAD remains part of the cultural fabric of Taranaki. The final shout out goes to our unsung heroes, the lifeblood of the festival - our volunteers. Our small city of New Plymouth continues to thrive with the Colin’s WOMAD experience bringing an top pick: annual kaleidoscope of music, dance The Specials and culinary delights to our wider New Zealand community. As this is the thirteenth staging of the event in New Plymouth, Todd Energy would like to acknowledge the local community and the Taranaki Arts Festival Trust for the inspiring opportunities that the WOMAD festival creates. We are delighted to be joined in our local community this year by The East Pointers who, with the children from local schools, will spend a day together in workshops sharing cultures, music & dance. Culminating in a special afternoon performance, local residents are also invited enabling them to listen and participate in the WOMAD experience very close to home. These special opportunities are what delivers a real return to the region and allows everyone to experience the colourful and diverse world of music and dance. Lisa Jên’s ethereal vocals in Welsh and 9Bach’s exquisite arrangements, fusing traditional harp, dulcimer and guitar with heady bass, saw them take out the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Album in 2015. With three albums under their belt, 9Bach’s moody, otherworldly sound has also seen them win a big fan in Peter Gabriel.

Ana Tijoux is the standard bearer for rap en Español, breaking down barriers between generations, voices and cultures and speaking out against injustice. Her hybrid sound captures where the street meets tradition, tough yet tender, political yet celebratory. AZIZA BRAHIM (WESTERN SAHARA/SPAIN) Voiced with deep passion and grace, Aziza Brahim’s music adeptly travels the expanse between her Western Saharan roots and Barcelona, the European cosmopolis where she now lives. Aziza is both a contemporary sonic poet and an eloquent spokesperson for the Saharawi people and their ongoing struggle for recognition and justice.

BAYNK (NZ/AOTEAROA) Baynk has been credited with being the sound of a new generation. His bass-heavy electronic tunes and stage presence get even the most sedentary bodies dancing. His premiere performance was at St Jerome’s Laneway festival in February 2016 and he’s since garnered a staggering online following in NZ and overseas.

BEBEL GILBERTO (BRAZIL) Grammy-nominee Bebel Gilberto, daughter of renowned singer João Gilberto, has forged her own distinctive, laidback style of bossa nova since she began performing in her twenties from her home base of New York City. Her synthesis of electronica with classic Brazilian beats and melodies floating atop modern bossa-tinged arrangements have positioned her among the best-selling Brazilian artists in the USA.

BRUSHY ONE STRING (JAMAICA) That’s right; there’s just one string on his guitar, but Jamaican songman Brushy conjures a universe of music. His plucking is ingenious but it’s his voice that sets him apart; deep and soulful one moment, sweet and soaring the next. Thanks to Luciano Blotta’s cult reggae documentary RiseUp, Brushy is now an international touring sensation.

EMIR KUSTURICA & THE NO SMOKING ORCHESTRA (SERBIA)

Fronted by controversial filmmaker Emir Kusturica, who has twice won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, this feisty 11-piece Serbian band couples anti-globalist messages with wild, eclectic music. Drawing influence from frantic Balkan rhumba and hot gypsy rhythms, the No Smoking Orchestra’s loveable, dishevelled sound fuses dancing with passionate beliefs.

HANOI MASTERS (VIETNAM) Among the few local recording artists to have survived the Vietnam War, Hanoi Masters present defiant and poignant songs that deal with the conflict’s aftermath, rather than the bombs of the time. Using traditional Vietnamese instruments, and led by Vân-Ánh Võ who regularly performs with the Kronos Quartet, Masters Quôć Hùng and Phạm Mộng Hải reveal not only their talent and immense resilience but also a sense of joy and humour.

INNA MODJA (MALI) Having been encouraged to sing by Salif Keita, the multi-talented Inna Modja is carving out a unique path on the world stage. Her music is an alluring mix of desert blues, electronica and hip-hop with hard-hitting lyrics, set to a flawless groove. She is outspoken on many of the injustices facing African women but, ultimately, hers is a powerful and positive vision for the future.

LA MAMBANEGRA (COLOMBIA) La Mambanegra (The Black Mamba) is a mighty salsa orchestra bubbling over with sophisticated musicianship, spicy rhythms and an unbeatable energy brought to you straight from the nightclubs of Cali. This electrifying nine-piece band combines funk, hip-hop and the salsa of 1970s New York; a combination guaranteed to have you dancing.

LORD ECHO (NZ/AOTEAROA) Producer and multi instrumentalist Lord Echo has been flexing his dual-mastery of 60’s production techniques and modern dance floor aesthetics for over a decade now, through a flowing blend of boogie-laced Funk, disco-primed Reggae, futuristic Soul, and timeless African rhythms. Maybe best known as guitarist and producer for The Black Seeds, he has also written and co-produced music with Lawrence Arabia under the name ‘Fabulous Arabia’, and collaborated with international DJs.

MARLON WILLIAMS (NZ/AOTEAROA) Described by The Guardian as delicious, oddly uplifting misery, Marlon William’s is New Zealand’s critically acclaimed folk and country singer making deep waves overseas. A veteran singer songwriter at the age of 25, Williams found his calling as child growing up in Lyttelton, New Zealand. Marlon is known for his ability to truly inhabit his material blurring the distinctions between classics and his own works.

MERCEDES PEÓN (SPAIN) Mercedes Peón is a one-woman musical hurricane who has single-handedly revived the traditional music of Galicia in northern Spain. A true original, Peón has painstakingly collected the songs of the region and experimented with them, unleashing them live in a dramatic solo show on stage, with an armoury of instruments and effects on hand.

NATTALI RIZE (JAMAICA/AUSTRALIA)

New Zealand’s own dub step and electronic dance music production duo is comprised of Jesse Cooper and Harley Rayner. They’re known for breaking barriers and have gained millions of fans with much critical acclaim from all corners of the globe. Expect filthy resonating bass lines, stomping drums, eerie vocals and a bit of hip hop flavour.

Best known as the dynamic front woman of roots favourites Blue King Brown, the ever-evolving Nattali heads up a new-conscious reggae project. With a renewed focus and energy after spending time living in Jamaica, Nattali and her Jamaicaninternational band are ready to unleash their debut album of uplifting and thought-provoking music.

OUMOU SANGARÉ (MALI) Respected as one of the greatest African stars of her generation, the majestic and gifted Oumou Sangaré is endearingly referred to as the ‘Songbird from Wassoulou’. Her music is funky and vibrant but her lyrics open people’s consciousness by challenging convention; from bold expressions of sensuality to advocating for women’s rights.

PAROV STELAR (AUSTRIA) Austria’s electro-swing band Parov Stelar, fronted by magnetic singer Cleo Panther, make their NZ debut at last! Their insanely catchy music that has been used in advertising campaigns across the world with joyous horns and sophisticated style, has the sass and panache of 1920s cabaret, with modern-day dance floor appeal.

SINKANE (USA) With a falsetto voice drifting over driving beats and layered synth lines, the compelling sound of Sinkane defines Ahmed Gallab’s journey from a childhood in London and Sudan to Brooklyn, where his music took flight. His style-hopping sonic influences embrace Afrobeat, pop and soul grooves and the result is a seamless and seductive cross-cultural mesh.

ROB RUHA (NZ/AOTEAROA) With his award winning music and soul stirring performances, Rob Ruha champions the voice and stories of his indigenous nation. An acclaimed ambassador of Ma-ori Music, Rob is in demand all over the globe to share his unique brand of home-grown Aotearoa music he describes as “Haka Soul.” Rob is renown for his powerful embodiment of lyric, fusing classic Ma-ori poetry with the magnetic sounds of today.

SONS OF ZION (NZ/AOTEAROA) From humble beginnings, a drive to make music, perform, and a commitment to their fans, Sons of Zion have become known for captivating audiences with their lively stage presence. Since their 2007 debut they’ve continued to build momentum in the NZ music industry and have stamped their unique sound, a fusion of rock, dub, and RnB with a reggae foundation on festivals and audiences both in New Zealand and across the globe.

SUDHA RAGUNATHAN (INDIA) As the most celebrated of south India’s devotional Carnatic singers, Sudha Ragunathan has a captivating voice that soars above the music’s strict rhythmic system. The agility and dexterity of her astonishing vocal control enables her melodies to bend and quiver like vibrating strings, underscored by lively percussion and violin accompaniment.

SWAMP THING (NZ/AOTEAROA) Known for playing every show like it’s their last, multi-instrumentalist Michael Barker (ex John Butler Trio & Split Enz) and singer guitarist, Grant Haua are the power blues duo Swamp Thing. Sharing a wealth of experience, they craft blues- driven songs with a deep groove and soulful spook, creating a sound that reaches far back into the musical DNA of roots music.

TAGO (SOUTH KOREA) TAGO means ‘lighting up the world by beating drums’, and this young ensemble achieves it with a breathtaking mixture of Korean traditional instruments, from gigantic drums to small percussion, spiced up with extravagant martial arts movements. TAGO’s performances are a masterful display of thrilling percussion and precision movement.

THE EAST POINTERS (CANADA) The freewheelin’, roof rattlin’ trio of Tim Chaisson on fiddle, Jake Charron on guitar and Koady Chaisson on banjo inject traditional folk with a bolt of youthful energy, verve and raucous step dancing. The East Pointers’ first release Secret Victory features energetic jigs, stomps, reels and heart-breaking harmonies that have made them torchbearers for a new wave in traditional music. THE HOT 8 BRASS BAND (USA) Direct from the streets of New Orleans, the raucous and joyful Hot 8 Brass Band has re-cast traditional marching band jazz with funk, R&B and hip-hop. Over 20 years of leading community parades, funeral processions, street parties and concerts, the band has endured great tragedies, including the violent deaths of several members and Hurricane Katrina, but they have emerged triumphant.

THE NEW ZEALAND DANCE COMPANY BROUHAHA (NZ/AOTEAROA) Following sold out seasons and standing ovations at every show in Germany and at the prestigious Holland Dance Festival and a North Island Tour, The New Zealand Dance Company proudly takes the stage at WOMAD with the outdoor stage adaptation of Brouhaha; a double bill of contemporary dance spearheaded by pioneers of artistic vision.

THE SOIL (SOUTH AFRICA) South Africa’s great a cappella harmony singing tradition is given new life with The Soil’s bold contemporary style. Defined as Kasi Soul, the young trio’s music is an eclectic mix of township harmonies, soul, jazz, beatboxing and deep gospel. It’s the crossroad where generational and stylistic inspirations collide, and the sound is nothing short of joyous

THE SPECIALS (UK) In 1979, The Specials ushered in the modern era of British ska; a danceable mix of Jamaican Bluebeat and punk known as Two Tone. They were political, nattily dressed ‘rude boys’ whose songs – such as the iconic Gangsters, Ghost Town and A Message to You Rudy - pulled no punches and captured the world’s imagination.

The Swan Sisters are award-winning singer/songwriter, Amiria Grenell, and accomplished musician, Amy Grace. Their music is a delicate blend of styles including folk, country and dreamy pop, with a dash of swingin’ blues. It encapsulates their friendship and love of storytelling.

WARSAW VILLAGE BAND

(POLAND)

Formed in 1998 as a defiant musical gesture against mass market mentality, this wild and adventurous seven-piece group proudly embraces Polish folk traditions, but with a thrilling and raw edge. Using old instruments rarely heard in modern music, their most recent album also draws influences from India, Persia and Spanish Galicia.

WHAT’S NEW - NGA MEA HOU IKA BAR Building on the success of the Oyster and Bubbles bar in 2016, the Gables House lawn has been transformed into an intimate space for those looking to indulge in some fine hors d’oeuvres and wine. Tickets are $30 per person and include two glasses of Alan Scott Cecilia Brut NV and Salmon three ways! There are four sessions available over the festival weekend and each session is 60 minutes. Spaces are limited and entry is restricted to ticket holders only, so head along to the Information Centre and they’ll let you know if tickets are still available.

WORLD OF WORDS Celebrate the written and spoken word with us as part of the new World of Words programme, which features artists, authors, poets, entrepreneurs and even a scientist and doctor duo. The line-up is a mixture of readings, presentations, interviews as well as a poetry slam and the aim of each session is to encourage ongoing and informed conversation.

REUSABLE COFFEE CUPS Back by popular demand! As part of the Zero Waste strategy, Shell NZ has designed reusable coffee cups. The cups will not only save on waste, but the funds raised from the sale of these cups will go to the Tiaki te Mauri o Parininihi Trust to help bring Ko-kako back to Taranaki. Ko-kako were once widespread throughout the lowland forests of Aoteaora, but predation and loss of habitat have taken a heavy toll. They’re famous for their haunting call, like deep ringing bells. Each reusable coffee cup purchase will help the Ko-kako call be heard again. Cups are available for purchase for $7 at all coffee outlets and at the WOStore.

WATER FOUNTAINS Say goodbye to disposable water bottles, we have! WOMAD will no longer be selling disposable water bottles, we believe water is a resource that should always be free and we’re also committed to doing out part to reduce the amount of waste that ends up going to landfill. The WOMAD site features a number of water fountains (marked on the map, pages 34–35). Interviewed by Alessandra Keighley Encouraged by her neighbour Salif Keita to sing with Bamako’s Super Rail Band, Inna Modja has gone on to craft her own unique style, mixing Desert Blues and Hiphop, becoming one of the most important Malian contemporary artists on the international scene. Her lyrics often focus on highlighting an injustice or an iniquity; she regularly speaks out against female genital mutilation and domestic violence and is an inspiring figurehead not just for feminism but also for all humanity. She Inna Modja takes no prisoners. She takes no shit.

Elizabeth Knox is the author of thirteen Elizabeth Knox novels, and a collection of essays. Her best known are The Vintner’s Luck, Dreamhunter and Dreamquake. Latest were Mortal Fire (finalist in the LA Times Book Awards) and the horror/science fiction, Wake. THE JUDGES Poet, MC, Comedienne, Actor, Social Commentator, TV Presenter, Improviser, and all round show off Penny Ashton will be hosting and judging this inaugural Penny Ashton competition of prose. Penny has represented NZ both in a slam poetry tour of the UK and at the World Championships of Theatre sports in Germany. Her solo Jane Austen musical Promise and Promiscuity has been performed over 200 times from Saskatchewan to Stewart Island. Penny is also a commentator on RNZ’s the Panel, Newstalk’s The Huddle and Breakfast TV.

Poetry Slams don’t leave poems on a page but bring them to sweaty, funny, moving, compelling, hysterical and captivating life. As part of the World of Words programme, we’re celebrating the written and spoken word – poetry included! Come check out the inaugural WOMAD poetry slam which will see WOMADers compete to win the title of Slam Champ!

THE SCHEDULE Saturday Seven poets will perform original poems of 3 minutes or less in two round competitions for an audience and judging panel. Up for grabs is the title of WOMAD Slam champ and 2 x 3 day VIP WOMAD 2018 tickets! The audience will play an important role in cheering on the poets and attempting to sway the judges’ scores, so come along to join in on the cheering!

Poets will be judged on: - execution - content - audience response Sunday The WOMAD slam champ will perform their winning piece followed by a slam session from our world renowned judges and seasoned slammers Penny Ashton, Carrie Rudzinski and Mohamed Hassan. Expect to be surprised and mesmerised by their bevvy of ballads, scandalous stanzas and rhythmic rhymes.

Ranked 4th in the world at the 2014 Women of the World Poetry Slam, Carrie Rudzinski has taught Spoken Word courses at California State University Northridge and Manukau Institute of Technology. Featured in Bustle, Huffington Post, and Teen Vogue, she has performed her work in 5 countries and almost all 50 of the United States.

Mohamed Hassan is a poet, podcast producer and journalist at Radio New Zealand. He is a TEDx speaker, co-founder of the Waxed Poetic Revival, and the 2015 National Poetry Slam Champion. Last year he was NZ’s first representative at the Individual World Poetry Slam in Arizona, where he ranked 23rd in the world, and released his first collection of poetry ‘A Felling of Things’. LA CYMBALOBYLETTE (FRANCE) Cymbalobylette: (noun) from the latin cymbalo, the cymbal and from the greek bylette, the motorcycle without motor. With a utilitarian look that is reminiscent of agricultural machinery from the roaring twenties, La Cymbalobylette is a hybrid mechanical music machine and real battucada, used to present a lively moving performance that’s a show of both humour and musical ingenuity.

PARENT HUB It’s no secret WOMAD is a family friendly festival, so building on the success of last year, we’re bringing back the Parent Hub, thanks to the Taranaki District Health Board. The Hub offers a place to feed your baby in comfort, information about breastfeeding, immunisation, safe sleep practices and more. There’s also midwives available to discuss any questions you have about your baby, one that’s planned, or on the way! Check the map (pg 34) for the Hub’s location.

TE PAEPAE “Te Pae Pae acts as a place of welcome to artists and WOMAD patrons; a place to come and experience the culture, and to meet some of the local people” says WOMAD Iwi Liaison; Wharehoka Wano. There are plenty of opportunities for Ma-ori culture and artistry to be experienced at Te Paepae via hands on activities, international music and dance workshops. This year an onsite art installation piece will be devised with pièce de résistance created from harakeke & muka (flax) and kohatu (stone).

WALKING IN CIRCLES Ko Rangi Ko Papa Ka Puta Ko Rongo is an interactive art installation originally created from kohatu (stone) and harakeke (flax) as a creative way of bringing ceremony back into our lives. Like our ancestors who sat around a fire to share conversation, it is a space for sharing stories, to see another perspective and a way forward to peaceful change. Join Ma-ori artist Jo Tito and her ongoing project Earth - Water - Light - Stone a collaboration with nature and Inuit artist, filmmaker, director & writer Stacey Aglok in the Te Pae Pae

space - listen to other’s stories while creating with stone to weave your own story into the installation. For the past two years, Stacey and Jo have been collaborating on Walking in Circles from their poles apart landscapes and will come together in Taranaki for WOMAD 2017.

MUKA INSTALLATION Te Paepae leads the way with a beautiful installation. Extracting muka, fibre, from the prized harakeke is an ancient practice. The purity of the fibre forces an intrinsic factor well known to Ma-ori weavers. Our artists and weavers provide the opportunity to help you bring about beauty and everlasting memories as you add your spirit to the project whilst extracting muka and latching the strands to the creation WAI. THE NEW ZEALAND DANCE COMPANY DANCE WORKSHOP Join The New Zealand Dance Company in an interactive workshop for all ages! Following a fun warm up with awesome music led by the dancers, participants will learn from Artistic Director Shona McCullagh how to move while defying gravity with the magic of balancing, just like the NZDC dancers in Lumina.that’s been incorporated in our own compositions.

THE EAST POINTERS - WORKSHOP Tim, Jake and Koady of The East Pointers will talk about the traditional music and dance from Prince Edward Island, Canada, and how they have blended these traditions with modern influences. The trio will demonstrate various types of tunes, both traditional and original, and discuss the close relationship between the music and dance.

WARSAW VILLAGE BAND - WORKSHOP Join members of the Warsaw Village Band for an explanation of how they use their vocal techniques and instrumentation to give a modern context to Polish folk music. Warsaw Village Band are renowned for taking traditional folk and combining it with modern elements. This workshop will give you a firsthand account of how they do this.

TAGO - KOREAN BEAT WORKSHOP

The 9Bach workshop will be focused around the Welsh language, and the importance of singing in Welsh in a country dominated by the English language. Lisa Jên the bands vocalist will teach the audience some simple words, and demonstrate the fascinating Welsh alphabet. Lisa will be accompanied by Mirain on Vocals Esyllt on harp and vocals, and Martin on guitar, to show our songs in a more stripped down version, showing off the three part harmonies, and also demonstrating 9Bach’s radical approach to Welsh Folk songs, and how that’s been incorporated in our own compositions.

This percussion workshop will be presented by Si-Won Kim and Kang-Il Lee, using the Korean musical instruments named Kkwaenggwari (a small gong), Janggu (an hourglass-shaped drum) and Buk (a barrel drum). They will show the Korean traditional musical rhythms and let the audience learn the traditional songs and body movements with Sogo (a small drum).

THE SOIL - BEATBOXING WORKSHOP

Join kapa haka icon and acclaimed Ma-ori Music artist Rob Ruha in an interactive workshop at WOMAD that will explore the intricacies of Ma-ori music, dance and storytelling through kapa haka. Open to all ages, the workshop is set to be a fun introduction to the fascinating world of Ma-ori performing arts.

An interactive workshop aiming at teaching the audience how to fuse an ancient hip hop tool (beatboxing) with the different harmonies of jazz and Afro-soul music in an a capella style, to create what The Soil calls ‘kasi soul music’. It’s dynamic music from the soul created without using any instruments.

Everyone involved with the festival (from the artists performing to the public attending) are encouraged to embrace the festival’s zero waste goals. WOMAD NZ’s commitment is to reduce our event’s waste to landfill by optimising recycling and composting. Zero waste means more space, better air, soil and water quality along with less resources being used in the future. By protecting our environment now, future generations can also enjoy this beautiful world.

You’ll notice a multifaceted approach is used, integrating the four R’s of waste minimisation (reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink).

YOU CAN HELP! In order to achieve our waste minimisation target, all food and drink products sold at WOMAD, are served in recyclable, reusable or compostable containers. Please visit one of our friendly volunteers at our Zero Waste stations so we can compost and recycle as much of your waste as possible.

Plastic bottles, plastic drinking cups numbered 1-7 within the recycling triangle can be recycled in New Plymouth.

Although there will be general rubbish bins on-site, please take home with you any non-recyclable materials which you bring in to the festival.

These are all made from compostable cardboard or cardboard-like materials, corn, sugar cane or potato starch.

LEADING THE WAY In 2017 WOMAD will deliver our world class Shell Zero Waste programme with the help of the Glass Packaging Forum and Beyond the Bin. Racecourse campers and glampers will for the second year have access to recycling and composting. Campers can separate their glass into different colours. Plastics, aluminium cans and compostable waste like food scraps will also be collected and made into compost within the Taranaki region.

Continuing its support of Zero Waste and Tiaki te Mauri o Parininihi Trust, Shell NZ is raising funds through the sale of reusable WOMAD coffee cups (for more information check out page 20). All funds raised will help the Trust’s efforts to bring ko-kako back to Taranaki. Also supported by

WATER AT WOMAD “Imagine a world without disposable bottles”

We believe water is a resource that should always be free! We’re also committed to doing out part to reduce the amount of waste that ends up going to landfill. In 2017 we’ve teamed up with Globelet to rework water at WOMAD. We no longer sell disposable water bottles, WOMAD now features a number of water fountains. You can either buy a Globelet reusable drink bottle from the WOStore or Aqua+ Station for $5, or bring you own (non-glass) water bottle and fill up for free at one of the water fountains. In the mood for something a bit fancy? Sparkling water and filtered, chilled water is available at our Aqua+ Station at a cost of $2 per 500mLs. Festival Tip: Look out for the tap images on the WOMAD Map – the black tap shows you where the free water fountains are located and the blue tap is our Aqua+ Station for premium water options.

CARBON CREDITS

We've been offsetting our carbon emissions since 2012 and have contributed to a number of initiatives including tree planting across Australasia and India.

YOU CAN OFFSET YOUR CARBON EMISSIONS TOO!

For 2017 we've made the move to offset our emissions solely in New Zealand and have partnered with Ekos to support the Rarakau Rainforest, located on Ma-ori land in the South Island.

Ekos have estimated the average WOMAD participant causes just under 0.35 tCO2e emissions from travel, accommodation and off-site waste. $6 buys 0.35 tCO2e carbon offsets to 'neutralise' these emissions so that your WOMAD experience does not contribute to climate change. By offsetting your emissions you'll also be helping to save the Rarakau Rainforest.

We buy carbon credits with Ekos to offset the festival's carbon footprint, this includes everything from waste, freight, electricity, accommodation, artist and stall holder travel, our merchandise and wristband manufacturing - even the cable ties we use!

LIVING LIBRARY DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER The Living Library contains ‘Living Books’ (people on loan), who are taken out by the Reader (person borrowing the Book) for 30 minutes to explore the Book’s topic. This enables Books to tell their stories and their Reader to break stereotypes by challenging prejudices in a positive and often humorous manner. The library is designed to promote dialogue, reduce discrimination, encourage understanding and widen views on life, in a space set up for interaction through one-on-one conversation. The Living Library breaks down barriers so that communities can build tolerance and understanding of one another, even if they don’t agree with each other’s chosen way of life.

KIDZONE WOMAD prides itself on being a family friendly music festival that has activities for all ages. Kidzone is a safe and welcoming environment for families and children (12 and under) where creativity, stories and entertainment are in abundance, open on Saturday and Sunday from 12pm - 6pm. This year’s theme of Nature and Ecology will be interpreted in song and dance, creative construction, face and body art, paint, sculpture and jewellery, story and performance – oh and then there’s the circus! Kidzone has a magical festival atmosphere and to top it all off its absolutely free!

WHAT’S ON OFFER MAGICAL MASQUERADE A Kidzone favourite, our face painting team’s imagination explodes transforming your children into fantastic creatures, fantasy fairies or menacing monsters. Get in early – there is always a queue!

TARANAKI COMMUNITY CIRCUS COLLECTIVE The circus is coming to Kidzone! Juggling, hooping, balancing, acrobatics and roving workshops to inspire and educate you on the many skills involved in circus art forms. Kids will go home with a set of juggling balls, new tricks to practice and smile as wide as a circus ring.

THE CARDBOARD CHALLENGE Join the team from The Learning Connexion and take part in creating your own cardboard jungle. Imagination has no limits. Children (and parents) are invited to explore their creative minds and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. This project will evolve as the days progress - be ready to take part in the big finale. We provide support and advice, you supply the creativity, together we have fun!

BOUNCY CASTLES Back by popular demand and this year there will be two of them – the Sports Castle for the bigger kids and the Party Time Castle for kids aged 4 and under.

COMMUNITY MUSIC JUNCTION Let the team from Community Music Junction work their musical magic with your children. Expect original music, for voices and instruments (hand percussion, boomwhackers and ukuleles) based on the Kidzone theme of Nature and Ecology. The music will be up-tempo, rhythmic and include dance movements for the performers. Julian, Lala and Sarah are very experienced at working with children in creative and imaginative music-making settings and mums, dads, grandarents and other grown-ups are welcome to join the singing sessions.

FUNKY BADGES Make a badge at Kidzone using found, recycled, natural elements and images. With a focus on creative play you can experiment with colour, texture, pattern and basic elements of design. This activity offers children a sensory experience which sparks imagination and encourages self-expression - and is lots of FUN!

TANYA BATT Tanya Batt is a self-confessed story-o-phile and frock-oholic, a South Pacific pirate princess, a black butterfly, a word warbler and story stitcher who channelled her childhood propensity for talking and her love of dressing up into a real ‘imaginary job’. Tanya will be performing original works for the delight of children and parents.

RHUBARB Take the internationally renowned duo Mary Kippenberger and Peter Charlton-Jones, mix in some fairytales, a bit of pantomime, slightly wicked songs, throw in costumes and a child or two and you have… Rhubarb! Interactive storytelling, music, fun and laughter – in the fantastic octagonal Raj tent!

THE TRAVELLING TUATARAS There at the beginning of the Taranaki WOMAD journey Jill Walker and Brian Potiki are back. Be in for a creative journey that may involve sculpture, paint, music, story telling and performance. In 2016 they were awarded the NZ Children’s Arthouse Foundation Award - The Artists Most Contributing to Children. Guaranteed to get your kids creative juices flowing.

THE KIDZONE CELEBRATION Celebrating kids and their creativity. This year there will be a new finale to WOMAD’s Kidzone – a celebration of Kidzone creativity. All the hard work, fun and creativity will be recognised in a Grand Finale inside Kidzone. Adults are welcome to attend as an enthusiastic audience! Coordinated by the Community Junction Team, the celebration will involve activities from all of the workshops.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMME THE PURPOSE Through our partners Todd Energy, the TSB Community Trust and the New Plymouth District Council, our aim is to make WOMAD accessible through workshops, concerts and artist interactions with select communities. This year’s events included song and dance workshops, a Cook-Off competition for Taranaki secondary school children and a free pop-up concert in New Plymouth’s CBD.

TODD ENERGY COMMUNITY PROGRAMME Todd Energy is a long term partner of WOMAD and through its valuable support WOMAD is able to extend its activities beyond the festival into the local communities. This year, Todd Energy brought the Canadian group The East Pointers to selected schools in the Ngati Rahiri area where they held Ceilidh (pronounced “Kay-lee”) workshops, involving folk-music and traditional Celtic dancing.

NEW PLYMOUTH DISTRICT COUNCIL COMMUNITY PROGRAMME New Plymouth District Council’s community programme provided an opportunity for the public to experience a free taste of WOMAD prior to the event and for select international artists to get involved at a community level. The free WOMAD pop-up concert took place at the Puke Ariki landing the Thursday before WOMAD and included festival artists The Soil (South Africa), The East Pointers (Canada) and The The Swan Sisters Swan Sisters (NZ / Aotearoa).

TSB COMMUNITY TRUST COOK-OFF Each year, teams of students from Taranaki secondary schools are invited to cook a dish from one of the top 10 cuisines of the world. The competition takes place at WITT in the week leading up to WOMAD and the students have their dishes judged by celebrity chef and Nova Energy Taste the World host Jax Hamilton. In the 2017 cook-off students were tested on a range of criteria, including creativity, presentation and more. Eager to see who won? Check out Nova Energy Taste the World on Sunday, the winning team are making their dish at 1pm!
