The Ballad of the Apathetic Son and His Narcissistic Mother

— Scotland

A real-life mother and teenage son put themselves on the line and on stage in this unflinchingly honest high-energy performance about their turbulent relationship. Not much connects mother Lucy and 16-year-old son Raedie, except their adoration of singer Sia. They love her music, her videos and especially her hair. They love the way it moves in a choppy, black-on-platinum swivel. Their show features iconic motifs of the Australian pop superstar, particularly the blonde wig she wears to obscure her face for privacy. With a powerful film backdrop to their challenging show, this mother and son use dance, song and monologue to take audiences on a wildly emotional ride.

Made by Scotland’s live arts organisation 21Common, this “ballad” explores the themes of rejection, nurture, transforming, hurting and becoming. WHEN Sat 17 Aug, 6pm Sun 18 Aug, 3pm
