Since launching the country’s first regional arts festival in 1991, Taranaki has always been at the forefront of the arts in New Zealand. In 2019 the festival continues to evolve with the presentation of not one, but four distinct boutique festivals over the next two years, each with a different identity. I like to think of this a little bit like an artistic degustation menu offering the very finest ingredients in portions just large enough to keep you looking forward to the next course. We begin this new era in winter with our first programme celebrating stories and the power these wield through the words and ideas that they express. We will present some of the greatest story tellers from across the ages, from Homer’s An Iliad to Samuel Butler’s visionary science fiction work Erewhon through to thoroughly contemporary voices from New Zealand such as Pacific playwright D.F.Mamea and international blogging sensation, Emily Writes. Meanwhile some of the smartest wordsmiths from the world of comedy and broadcasting will be put to the test under the expert emceeing of the iconic Mark Sainsbury as we debate the new world of sustainable energy. But stories can also be told in many ways, so we will also traverse a wide range of performance genres including dance from visionary choreographer and video maker Louise Potiki Bryant, and music from the wandering minstrel of Gothic Americana, Delaney Davidson. You can even share your own stories through a workshop with the extraordinary Indonesian fabric artist Rozana Lee. We look forward to seeing you at the TSB Showplace this winter. Arthur Meek’s Erewhon — Aotearoa / New Zealand / Scotland

Take an antique magic lantern projector, add an engaging storyteller, an iPhone, a time-travelling adventure, stunning graphics, live music and let yourself go – somewhere, somewhen, somehow. In this gloriously tongue-in-cheek show, Arthur Meek reimagines Samuel Butler’s satirical 1862 sci-fi novel Erewhon. The New York-based Kiwi playwright has taught himself the lost art of magic lantern projections to transport us to a utopian land, somewhere in New Zealand’s Southern Alps. In this mysterious place, women have the upper hand, illness is punished, wealth is pitied, and technophobia is prized. Made in collaboration with Edinburgh’s Magnetic North Theatre Company, Erewhon is delivered through Meek’s charismatic story-telling, with a live score by Fly My Pretty’s Eva Prowse and lantern slides from Stuff cartoonist Sharon Murdoch and friends. Viral blog-turned-book Rants in the Dark by Emily Writes has been transported from the page to the stage with unfiltered hilarity and heartbreak. In this authentic play for everyone — not just “for tired mamas everywhere” — people will find themselves laughing out loud and nodding in recognition at the raw truth of parenthood (and grandparenthood). The Wellington blogger, who had two boys who were poor sleepers, used to write her “rants” in the wee hours and once woke to find one post had received a million hits overnight. Starring Renee Lyons, Bronwyn Turei and Amelia Reid-Meredith, Rants in the Dark embraces all the messy contradictions of having kids. Onepū

In an atmospheric performance of dance and music, six atua wāhine (female deities) control and release the winds of the world. Inspired by a Kāi Tahu tradition, as told by Teone Taare Tikao, Onepū has been co-created by celebrated choreographer and dancer Louise Potiki Bryant, who is also the show’s video artist. Adding to this expression of mana wāhine (the intrinsic power of women), is a musical landscape performed by composer, vocalist and taonga pūoro artist Ariana Tikao. This work from Atamira Dance Company is a meditation on the different qualities brought to us on the winds of each of these mighty atua wāhine. Joining Louise in this spirited and powerful work are the five other wind dancers – Rosie Tapsell, Tanu Richardson, Jasmin Canuel, Presley Ziogas and Imogen Tapara. So promises Ben, a Taranaki lad you’ll know from TV shows 7 Days and The Project. The seasoned stand-up star is stoked to be returning home again and promises to bring all the laughter. Another 7 Days regular, Kiwi-born Cal Wilson crossed the ditch in 2003 and the Aussies love her. She’s become a favourite on a string of TV shows in her adopted home, hosts Melbourne’s wing of live storytelling gig, The Moth, and is one of 47 international stand-ups in Netflix show, Comedians of the World. All fabric tells a story – whether it’s an old shirt, a well-worn blanket, or the material from a bag you once loved. In this three-hour workshop, Indonesian artist Rozana Lee, of Chinese migrant descent, invites people to bring along a piece of fabric that has special significance to them and turn it into a simple collage to hang on the wall. All additional materials will be provided – participants just need to bring a piece of fabric (however big or small) that holds a special memory.

While living in Singapore with her New Zealand husband, Rozana’s home of Aceh, Indonesia, was destroyed by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, killing more than 170,000 people, including her mother and many childhood friends.

That led Rozana to re-evaluate her life. She gave up a 15-year banking career to look after her children, moved to New Zealand and revived her long-time passion for art and sharing it with others. W I N T E R

Kiwiana Richard Wolfe Rattle your dags! It’s time to salute all things Kiwiana – Uniquely New Zealand.

In this illustrated talk, prolific author Richard Wolfe will discuss his latest publication, co-written with Stephen Barnett, and offer a broad view of Aotearoa’s distinctive character. The men coined the name “Kiwiana” and it’s 30 years since they produced the first of several books on the subject. This presentation will highlight the origins and evolution of Kiwiana, and what it might say about New Zealanders and our national identity. From pounamu heitiki to the buzzy bee, Sir Edmund Hillary to Fred Dagg, L&P to flat whites, Richard Wolfe will remind us where we came from and who we are.

Unknown Anzac David Hastings

While researching the lingering effects of war, historian and journalist David Hastings stumbled upon a compelling story of a lost soldier. Odyssey of the Unknown Anzac follows the trail of Stratford man George McQuay, who disappeared from the Western Front in 1916. Ten years after World War 1 ended, the Sydney Sun reported how an unknown Anzac still lay in a Sydney psychiatric hospital suffering from amnesia. The story received a huge response and an international campaign began to find the man’s family.

Whare Kahurangi: 100 Years of Collecting celebrates 100 years since the Taranaki Museum opened its doors and features objects from the Museum’s storerooms and from private collectors around Taranaki. From Skinner’s diary entries charting the beginning of the museum through to the weird and wonderful - living dead dolls, Transformers, a meteorite, our oldest picture of New Plymouth, a cobra, some stolen jewels and the hint to a missing face towel (possibly!) belonging to Edward VII … there’s something for everyone.

Rachel Lambert Contemporary Jewellery Exhibition

New Plymouth’s own Rachel Lambert completed her jewellery studies at M.I.T in Auckland in 2000 she then travelled Europe for six years settling in the UK where she worked as a bench jeweller. Returning home, Rachel’s exhibition will focus on reforging her connection with Taranaki working with natural materials including bone, antler, wood, mother-of-pearl shell and semi-precious stones. Speaking of her work Rachel says, “My wish in creating jewellery is that it not only catches the eye but it draws you in to hold it. Like an amulet, comforter or a touchstone; it feels protective, comforting and helps the wearer feel more themselves.” Rachel Lambert Exhibition OPENING WHEN WHERE ADMISSION
