All festival gardens get assessed. Every garden goes through this process on a three-yearly cycle. The New Zealand Gardens Trust, an initiative of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, provides an independent assessment of New Zealand gardens. 4

You will note that some gardens in our festival have chosen to be assessed by the Trust as well as undergoing the festival’s own assessment process. These gardens can be identified by the placement of the NZGT logo reflecting either a Garden of Significance, National or International Significance.

ONEARO Onaero is a settlement in northern Taranaki, located on State Highway 3 close to the shore of the North Taranaki Bight. WAITARA An impressive natural feature of the town is the Waitara River, which flows through its heart. The banks of the river were the scene of a significant battle during the Taranaki Land Wars of the 1860s and involved over 2000 people. BELL BLOCK Named after its purchaser, Francis Dillon Bell, the 4000-strong beachfront residential town is also an industrial hub for the region.

Tikorangi The Jury Garden 589 Otaraoa Rd, Tikorangi RD43, Waitara, 4383 Abbie & Mark Jury Opening for the first time in seven years, Tikorangi is one of the few inter-generational gardens in NZ with the oldest trees dating back to 1870 and main areas actively gardened for 70 years. Be sure to view the unique sub-tropical Rimu Walk, the detailed woodland of the Avenue Gardens, the sunken garden and rockery both dating back to the 1950s. Mark and Abbie have changed the park to an actively managed meadow and created an acre of new summer perennial gardens comprising the Court Garden, twin borders, lily border, Caterpillar Garden and the Iolanthe Garden. Waiongana Gardens 74 Kairau Rd West, Waitara, 4373 John Wilmshurst & Diana Montgomery This 4ha garden bound by the Waiongana River has many varied spaces, a Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Redwoods, Native River Walk, log walls and a developing produce area to name but a few. The mostly flat terrain has enabled a large variety of easy walking avenues and vista viewpoints. This garden is well known for the herbaceous peonies that usually flower during the festival. Scrumptious savouries, cakes, tea, coffee and cold drinks from The Cake Diary will be on sale in the Pavilion. This garden was featured in NZ House & Garden magazine. 3. Winlea Acre 2 Joll St, Waitara, 4383 Ann & Maurice Crackett An immaculate award-winning open-style garden that boasts a huge lawn with plantings on either side. The amazing variety of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, fruits and vegetables, skilfully planted in this garden provide a wonderful example of what can be achieved in short spaces of time with vision and expertise. The garden itself is entirely flat, curved beds planted with hellebores, a leucadendron, and hydrangeas border the immaculate and vast lawn. This largely self-sustainable property, named after the ancient pā site on its boundary, utilises crop rotation, seed preservation, companion planting and mulching. 6. Hillsborough Hideaway Haven
683 Egmont Rd, 4372 Steve & Joy Fabish Hillsborough is a landscape project on a grand scale. This garden is in the early stages of development, planted with NZ native, Australian and exotic plants. Nestled into a valley, this former paddock has grand designs in place. Te Kainga Marire New Zealand Native Garden Paradise 15 Spencer Pl, New Plymouth, 4312 Valda Poletti & David Clarkson Te Kainga Marire is the only private native garden sanctuary in New Zealand to be rated as a Garden of International Significance. Te Kainga Marire’s (translated ‘peaceful encampment’) point of difference lies in the natural plant associations that evoke a feeling of the real New Zealand. This native plant paradise was developed in 1972 from clay wasteland. Keen outdoor adventurers, the owners wanted a bird-friendly garden designed around the ecological groups they had observed in the wild. Lynn, who has a botany background, believes good gardens have a spiritual dimension, and that’s what you will find here. 11. Pukemara 5 Tyne Pl, New Plymouth, 4312 Alan Morris Rhododendron enthusiast Alan has created a town garden of three parts – a flat courtyard, flourishing veggie patch and a hillside woodland. The courtyard garden around the house features sub-tropical vireya rhododendrons combined with fuchsias, roses and perennials. The hillside garden at the rear has surprises around every corner of the zigzag path, especially colourful rhododendrons, fiery azaleas, mature trees, viburnums and hydrangeas. Fillis St, New Plymouth Located in the heart of New Plymouth, Pukekura Park is a Garden of National Significance and has held the international Green Flag award for six years running. Created in 1876, the park now spans 52ha. It has an amazing range of native and exotic plants displayed in a natural setting, as well as wonderful views of the lakes and Taranaki Maunga. The Fernery and Display Houses have been a must-see for almost a century. The three glass-topped caverns dug into a hillside and linked by tunnels, along with a tropical house, display a wide variety of native and exotic plants. The fernery is open 8.30am - 5pm. ŌPUNAKE Ōpunake is a seaside destination halfway along the 105km stretch of road known as Surf Highway 45. Featuring world-renowned surf breaks, mountain-to-sea views and a walkway that stretches for 7 kilometres, you will discover great cafés, antique stores, vibrant murals and a bronze statue celebrating the running efforts of hometown hero and Olympic champion Peter Snell. MANAIA Manaia has been nicknamed the “bread capital” of New Zealand. Home to world-renowned Yarrows Family Bakers, visitors are welcomed into the town by a giant bread sign and encouraged to stop by the bakery for great deals on bread and baked goods. The village gets the real name from the former Māori chief of the district, Hukunui Manaia. HĀWERA Hāwera has many attractions on offer, from relaxing in one the town’s picturesque parks, stopping in at the famed Tawhiti Museum with its life-size figures created from moulds cast from real people, or climbing the iconic water tower, built in 1914 to assist firefighting in the town, after devastating blazes in 1884, 1888, and 1912. Aptly, the Māori name of Hāwera means “the burnt place” or “breath of fire”.

26. Sanderson Garden 1961 South Rd, Manaia, 4678 John & Elaine Sanderson Sanderson Garden, with a rural setting, has been awarded five stars by NZ Gardens Trust. The lush sanctuary of nikau palms, camellias, roses, and a selection of perennials, including many salivas, give way to spectacular views of Taranaki Maunga. Expansive lawns and established garden beds are set amongst sheltering maples, a weeping elm, and a towering walnut tree. Cherry trees, portuguese laurels and roses also flourish. Many sculptures and ornaments feature throughout, including two “lady sphinxes” who welcome visitors to the garden. 27. Gravetye 60 Manawapou Rd, Hāwera, 4610 John & Jenny Pease Gravetye is a formal garden that celebrates the simplicity of mass green planting. Wander along the perennial border, pass the sunken vegetable garden, the reflection pool, the pleached limes & the laburnum arch, which all radiate out from the house. 31. King Edward Park Cnr Upper High St and Waihi Rd, Hāwera South Taranaki District Council King Edward Park is rated by the New Zealand Gardens Trust as a nationally significant garden. The ancestry of the park est. 1902 is seen in its charmingly formal design. The lofty close clipped hedges give shelter to abundant azalea and rhododendron collections. This garden has rose beds of both heritage and modern varieties, historic aged trees and a century old model boating pond. The bronze statue of Wendy, is the companion piece to the Peter Pan in London’s Kensington gardens. The 150-year-old cannon has been a favourite toy for children, along with a pirate ship and fort. ELTHAM Eltham’s main street is lined with Victorian buildings that are home to many charming antique and curiosity shops. The town has a fascinating history, being where the New Zealand dairy industry took off globally. Greenhills 37 Cassandra St, Stratford, 4332 Shirley Greenhill This is a floral artist’s garden that cleverly incorporates a mixed perennial garden, shrubbery and a rockery with a bounty of treasures. This urban garden effectively uses different levels to draw you in, where climbing clematis and garden structures create intriguing shapes in a small space. Wander over a 30m suspension bridge crossing the deep river gorge that surrounds the garden and hear birdsong as you stroll the extensive forest trails. This garden is magic for all the senses. A Visit Through the PĀst with Ken Horner Puketarata Garden lies inside an outer rampart of the historic Puketarata pā site, one of a number in the valley region. Around the 15th or 16th centuries, the age of pā building began, and for four or five hundred years Puketarata was home to Māori who lived and gardened at the pā site or its adjacent kainga (village) Keteonetea. Historic events had a destructive effect on Taranaki and on Puketarata/Keteonetea. In the 1820s the musket wars began followed by the subsequent arrival of Pākehā in increasing numbers from 1840, by the 1860s the land wars had commenced. The area was officially confiscated in 1865 by the government along with other Māori land in the area. Although there is very little specific history known of this time, Ken Horner, amateur historian and owner of Puketarata Garden, has pieced together the history of the land that has been his family’s home since 1983. Take part in a walk along the earthen structure that is all that remains of the historic pā site and join in the conversation with the Ken about Puketarata’s place in history. Recycled water tanks store 6000L of rainwater, which flow into a network of swales, through a food forest and annual vegetable garden beds. Welcome to Taranaki for our seventh Trail. Our committee is grateful for the vital support of sponsors, patrons and local businesses as well as artists who help with media referrals, signs and brochure distribution. Eighty-four artists and just three days (Fri/Sat/ Sun) to see them might seem a bit daunting. Our website www.taranakiartstrail.co.nz displays images and information about every artist and will sort by category and location. We realise that visitors get rushed and studios get busy, but fortunately many artists open their studios to visitors by appointment and this brochure is a sturdy publication, which is intended to last the year between Trails. Our experienced coordinator Niki at taranakiartstrail@ gmail.com is available for advice. We have 30 new artists and a refreshingly broad range of work using all manner of methods and materials. Some artists are well-known and some new and anxious, but every one of them has decided to host an open studio. Visitors will see some finished work and if they choose, can ask about the artistic process, materials, aims, philosophy etc. Hopefully, you will enjoy this marvellous chance to get inside a whole lot of little art factories.

ABOUT Many people from Taranaki take off for education or jobs or OE - artists among them. Some return to settle here and resume their art, but they have ‘been away’ and it shows. Artistic newcomers arrive and stir the mix. As a result the ways and means and colours of the big wide world have long influenced the portrayal of local things. On this Trail you can find fascinating photography and objects imaginatively rendered in glass or stone or wood, clay, fibre, metal etc as well as many types of painting. In effect the Trail is run as though it were one big diffuse exhibition for the community, but more importantly, it is to have our artists talk to a lot of interested people. Admission is free and the studios are open from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Friday to Sunday the 31st of October to 1 November 2020. To help plan your tour the brochure has been subdivided into four geographical regions. This brochure with an inserted foldout map shows the location of all the artists as well as partner galleries and hospitality venues. In getting about you might see that Taranaki has some spectacular scenery too. 2

Viv’s works created in her studio space include handmade papers and books, botanical dyeing and contact printing, stitching and handweaving. Housed in the studio are a wide range of looms including a 70 harness Swedish draw loom.
Lulu is an evolving artist, working from her Surf Highway 45 studio. Her main addiction is ceramics but she often dabbles with concrete, resin, acrylics and photography.
