On behalf of TAFT, our Board, and our festival team, we are delighted to bring to audiences SPEAKEASY Writers Fest, 9-10 July 2022. Our first standalone readers and writers’ festival, SPEAKEASY, focuses on the strength and depth of contemporary New Zealand literature. Book lovers will enjoy being part of this intimate experience, held over two days, with awardwinning authors, poets, adventurers, scholars and more. SPEAKEASY is a mini festival with a smaller audience capacity, programmed to run at the “red” level. We encourage all avid readers to book their tickets early, as limited tickets are available, and settle in for a weekend of ideas and conversations celebrating the written word in fiction and non-fiction forms. We look forward to bringing this event to New Plymouth and reconnecting with our festival audiences after the challenges that COVID has presented over the last year.

KIA ORA It is a pleasure to introduce audiences to our first standalone literacy festival, SPEAKEASY Writers Fest. The SPEAKEASY writers programme was scheduled to run alongside Winter Fest. It felt too soon to take on an extensive ten-day festival programme, with 2022 still presenting disruption and uncertainty. Arts and connections matter now more than ever, and in true TAFT fashion, we have adapted to ensure that arts can still thrive safely and at any alert level! SPEAKEASY Writers Fest features some of the most captivating authors in Aotearoa today, both fiction and non-fiction. Over two days, we’re inviting you to push your mind to be observant, to let curiosity take over, and challenge your perceptions with modern literature. We know that our festival audiences need a doorway that keeps you connected with the world around you, a space to observe hardships enjoy laughter and love, fear, and happiness. Books allow us to discover and explore these elements of everyday life. They let us into the lives of others and connect us to the characters as they overcome difficulties and challenges. Their stories give us the courage and confidence to deal with problems we may face during our lifetime. Our featured authors will take you on a journey with their words as you travel with them across the pages of their books. We look forward to welcoming you to be part of SPEAKEASY. Inspired by the power of reading, we hope to bring more positivity back to audiences here in New Plymouth. With that, we leave you with an excerpt from Julie Zarifeh, author of ‘Grief on the Run’ part of the SPEAKEASY programme. “When we think positively, we tend to behave in more positive ways. There is plenty of car parking available at the 4th Wall Theatre in the well-lit off-street parking area at the rear of the theatre.
The 4th Wall is dedicated to enriching cultural life, advancing the theatrical art form and sharing it with the broadest possible audience, making it a great local for SPEAKEASY Writers Fest.
Additional off-street parking is encouraged within the LOGICAMS Ltd car park adjacent to the theatre, regularly monitored by Security.

The 4th Wall Theatre is located at 11 Baring Terrace, Strandon, with the entrance off Devon Street East and approximately 60 metres from the corner on the right. The theatre houses an air-conditioned 102 seat cabaret table style auditorium and an upstairs Gallery holding 26 in two-seater leather couches. There is a fully licensed Bar with a wide variety of drink options available during each session.

SEAT ALLOCATION When you book online you have two options - “choose seats for me” or “let me choose my seats”. Most patrons choose their own seats, and you will be seated in that specific seat as per your ticket.
This option only applies to the MAIN (standard) auditorium area. The Gallery is the upstairs two seat couch option, so it is on a General Admission basis only.
COVID-19 You are no longer required to scan the QR Code for entry or present a Vaccine Pass, however attendees (excluding performers) are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings. As regulations change this will be updated.

GRIEF ON THE RUN Julie Zarifeh Julie Zarifeh is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist. She has investigated the psychological factors contributing to ‘broken heart syndrome after the Christchurch earthquakes and has presented at many conferences. The 2017 deaths of Julie’s husband and son fuelled a passion for resilience psychology as she worked to accept and adjust to the double bereavement. Julie is now engaged to be married again.

She loves swimming, running, exploring NZ, and spending time with her two adult children, their partners, grandchildren, extended family, and good friends. She lives in Sumner, Christchurch. What dogs want Mat Ward Mat Ward is a clinical dog behaviourist who has helped thousands of pets (and their humans!) improve their wellbeing over the past two decades. He established himself as a leading practitioner in Edinburgh, Scotland, and now assists dogs worldwide via online consultations. In the TV series Dogs Might Fly, Mat demonstrated the amazing things that can be achieved with rescue dogs and reward-based training – including teaching a dog to fly a figure of eight in a plane.

DANCING WITH THE MACHINE Jo Morgan Jo Morgan is an adventurer, writer, Unicef goodwill ambassador, philanthropist and grandmother. The matriarch of the well-known Morgan clan, Jo is married to economist and philanthropist Gareth Morgan and is the mother of four children, including Sam Morgan, the founder of Trade Me. Jo, along with Gareth and friends, has driven a motorbike through more than 110 countries and visited nearly 140 countries. But she would leave her most extraordinary adventures till later in life when she took up climbing in her late fifties. She set herself a goal of summiting all 24 of New Zealand’s 3000-metre-plus mountain peaks

with the help of her guide and friend Wolfgang, nicknamed The Machine. They would ascend all but two of them before tragedy struck, killing both Wolfgang and his colleague Martin. Gangland Jared Savage Jared Savage is an award-winning investigative reporter at the New Zealand Herald. Over ten years, Jared has developed a niche in reporting on organised crime, including the 2019 documentary, Fighting the Demon, which delved into New Zealand’s ongoing methamphetamine crisis. His latest book, Gangland (HarperCollins Publishers NZ, 2020), shines a light on New Zealand’s rising underworld of organised crime and violent gangs. Jared takes

crazy love Rosetta Allan Rosetta Allan is a poet, novelist, and short fiction writer. She has released two collections of poetry (Little Rock, 2007 and Over Lunch, 2010) as well as three novels Purgatory (2014), The Unreliable People (2019) and Crazy Love (2021). Allan lives in Auckland and works as Creative Director and Writer for Creative Exchange NZ. In 2016, Allan was the first New Zealander to take up the St Petersburg Art Residency, located within the Museum of Nonconformist Art in Russia. She was the recipient of a Michael King Writers Centre Summer Residency for
2018. In February 2019, she took up the position of Creative NZ/University of Waikato Writer in Residence in Hamilton for the year. Longstanding patrons of the arts, Allan and husband James launched their cultural philanthropy organisation, the Crystal Arts Trust, in 2021. I wish, I wish Zirk van den Berg Zirk van den Berg is an Auckland-based novelist writing in Afrikaans and English. He has been active in Afrikaans since 1989, with seven books hitting the shelves since 2013 – two of them published in both Afrikaans and English simultaneously – and an eighth due for release in 2023. Ek wens, ek wens, the Afrikaans version of I Wish, I Wish (Cuba Press NZ, 2020) won the prestigious WA Hofmeyr Prize for Literature and the kykNETRapport Prize for Literature and the kykNETRapport Prize for best filmable book in 2020.
The book has since been turned into an award-winning play in South Africa. The English version was shortlisted for the 2021 NZ Booklovers Award for Fiction. Van den Berg moved to New Zealand in 1998 and lives in Auckland with his wife and two children. He makes his living as a freelance writer, mainly of tender documents.

After the Tampa Abbas Nazari Abbas Nazari fled the Taliban in Afghanistan as a child and was resettled in New Zealand after the Tampa containership rescued his family in 2001, an international story known as the Tampa Affair. Abbas and his family have thrived since being resettled in New Zealand. In 2019, Abbas was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to the United States, where he graduated with a Master’s in Security Studies from Georgetown University, Washington DC.

Before you knew my name Jacqueline Bublitz New Zealander Jacqueline ‘Rock’ Bublitz is a writer, feminist, and arachnophobe. She wrote her much-praised debut novel Before You Knew My Name, after spending a summer in New York, where she hung around morgues and the dark corners of city parks (and the human psyche) far too often.

The Theatre Royal is the home to the cabaret fest, where stories are told through sultry cabaret, hilarious comedy and magical theatre, all taking place in the intimate surrounds of a night club setting. The festival, also presented in 2012, 2018, and 2021 has grown in popularity with performances from some of the leading cabaret artists across New Zealand and the world. 19
