The Taranaki Arts Festival Trust believes we are responsible for giving as many school children as possible access to performing arts. Exposure to arts and culture has many positive effects on the community’s wellbeing and the future of our next generation.

ROFL A relaxed performance of the show is available for anyone who would benefit from a comfortable environment. Designed to welcome Neurodiverse people, those with sensory and communication needs, and audiences with learning disabilities. It’s the same ROFL show as always, except we leave the house lights up a fraction and a bit of moving about and noise from the audience is cool! All are welcome to attend. This is a free event, so bookings are essential.

Pay It Forward, Keep Arts Thriving invites you to purchase a ticket to create an opportunity for a Taranaki school child to experience a live performing art show right here in our Yourcommunity.$5donation goes a long way to ensure Arts Thrive Here for the next 30 years.

Over the last 30 years, our Schools Programme has given thousands of school children the opportunity to experience the arts who may not otherwise be able to.

It is a real treat for us here at Taranaki Arts Festival Trust to dust off the incredible Pacific Crystal Palace Spiegeltent and bring it back after a lonely few years of sitting in containers due to COVID disruptions. Spiegel Fest 2022 celebrates the power of the arts. It celebrates the power to add vibrancy to our community and to enrich our region culturally. It celebrates the economic power – to inject spending into our CBDs and our hospitality businesses and attract visitors. But most importantly, the power to make us feel good – to invigorate social connections and community well-being. It’s the end-ofyear celebration we all deserve. Arts Festivals are all about bringing people together, building connections, and sharing live experiences, and that has been a difficult thing to do in a pandemic. Yet research found that as a country, we’re more optimistic than ever about the vital role the arts play in our lives, particularly navigating life in a pandemic. Evidence has shown regular engagement in arts and culture is associated with higher levels of life satisfaction, lower mental distress, and better mental functioning. We firmly believe the arts matter and have a crucial role in our recovery. We invite you to buy a ticket or attend one of our free events — to connect, participate and celebrate. We look forward to seeing you in the Spiegeltent this November!

TURKEY THE BIRD GOES BRASS

New Zealand’s folk trio “Turkey The Bird” will remind you of a Margarita cocktail, infused with a hint of “Simon & Garfunkel”, 2 ounces of “Mumford and Sons”, a splash of Banjo, served on ice on a sunny day, placed on a massive plate of shiny brass. “Turkey The Bird” teams up with the Hāwera Brass Band for this unique performance, with beautiful three-part harmonies, toe-tapping rhythms, and a selection of catchy folk songs from their 2 chart topping albums. The bearded trio features Andre Manella from Switzerland, Adrian Whelan from Ireland, and Sol Bear Coulton, the token kiwi! Nov 7pm Pacific Crystal Palace Spiegeltent 60 Minutes

Following the success of Don Juan and Jekyll and Hyde, A Slightly Isolated Dog brings you the third instalment in the trilogy of very sexy works: The Trojan War. This explosive & hilarious work uses a cast of faux-French performers to create a joyful, interactive celebration. Theatrical magic, wicked pop songs & fierce wit is combined to create a delightful romp through this twisted classic tale. When Paris is born, it is prophesied that he will bring the destruction of the city. To avoid this fate, he is sent away to be sacrificed. But this starts a series of events that will inevitably lead to the destiny his parents were so desperately trying to avoid. The Trojan War tells the story of the tragic fall of Troy. It’s a raucous celebration of our ridiculous lives: using this classic tale of gods and heroes to explore questions around the current chaos of our times playfully.

Many moons ago, a superhero of a different kind ruled this side of the Pacific. His name was Māui-Tikitiki-A-Taranga – MĀUI. A warrior and demigod, his adventures are woven into the fabric of Pacific history. In Aotearoa, this ‘Māori Superman’ was fast, fit, and funny. He was the total package. He slowed the sun, fished up the North Island and brought fire to the world – to name just a few of his Burgeoningfeats!music theatre star Rutene Spooner is channelling this Māori hero into a modern-day icon, complete with rhinestones and glitter. This ‘hakaboogie-hori’ will be pulling out all his tricks from the past and reincarnating Māui into a living, breathing musical rock star before your very eyes. Disgraced actor Garry Starr defies his critics by performing every genre of theatre possible, thus saving the performing arts from its inevitable extinction. Starr tears through styles with little regard for personal safety and even less regard for art, proving his talents to himself, his adoring fans and those who dare question his ability. Garry Starr is the alter-ego of Australian/British actor and comedian Damien Warren-Smith. Struggling to stick at anything for much of his life, Damien discovered much hilarity (for everyone besides himself and his long-suffering Mother) in attempting to do everything at once for art’s sake.
