Taranaki Arts Festival is excited to present RESET Festival for a second year after its inaugural launch in 2020. RESET Festival 2021 celebrates arts, culture and live performances, an end-of-year festival suitable for all generations, and appetites for entertainment. This year RESET will feature some of the most inspiring, thought-provoking, and culturally entertaining performances produced in New Zealand. The diverse two-week festival is brimming with dance, comedy, music, and theatre, a unique programme featuring shows that have sold out venues around the country and community events held in theatres, halls, and venues around Taranaki. TAFT and our community offer our greatest thanks to the partners, patrons and sponsors who support this festival and continue to enable it to flourish. Because of our supporters, we can present some of the best performances in New Zealand right here in Taranaki. Following the success of Reset Festival last year, we’re excited to return with a 10-day selection of performances. Programming an Arts Festival is a great privilege, and with our borders closed, it has illuminated the breadth and quality of talented artists we have here in Aotearoa. We know that the arts make a powerful contribution to our wellbeing – they helped us cope through 2020 and adjust to life living with a pandemic. Research shows that the arts help us explore and build our sense of identity and grow our connections with other New Zealanders*. We invite you to share an experience with us through this year’s festival with neighbours, friends, whānau, and strangers and build connections within our community. This year, we’re excited to offer once again our successful schools programme, regional performances and a free community event at Huatoki Plaza with the incredible ‘The Air Between Us’ plus the opportunity to be a part of the festival through ‘Us’, a mass movement event celebrating our city and our people. From a show for babies not yet walking through to the universal appeal of Thom Monkton and local collaborations, this is an accessible festival that aims to offer something to everyone. Thanks for being a part of our festival journey. We look forward to welcoming you, sharing experiences and conversations over ten days and beyond. Accessibility We’re pleased to offer an accessible audio described performance as part of this year’s festival. The Haka Party Incident 5.30-6.00pm Touch Tour Audio Described performances provide a live audio commentary by passionate professionals from Audio Described Aotearoa Ltd as they describe the actions onstage. This commentary is relayed to blind and lowvision patrons via an earpiece which can be booked in advanced. Touch Tours are held one and a half hours before the show. Patrons can walk through the set, touch props, feel costumes and familiarise themselves with visual and sensory materials in the performance. The Haka Party Incident by Katie Wolfe

An Auckland Theatre Company production The Haka Party Incident resurrects the eventful day when a group of University of Auckland engineering students rehearsing their annual tradition of a mock haka are confronted by the activist group, He Taua. The incident sent ripples through the nation and changed race relations in New Zealand forever. Crafted by Ngāti Mutunga filmmaker and theatre director Katie Wolfe (The Mooncake and the Kumara, Waru, He Māngai Wāhine, Artefact), The Haka Party Incident is verbatim theatre that innovatively combines documentary and kapa haka to thrilling effect. *See page 5 for information on accessible performance.

Melting Pot Stirring together genres, styles and cultures to create something unique, refreshing and thought provoking. Melting Pot is a short-works showcase of works created by Freshmans Dance Crew and a number of pieces from guest choreographers, musicians, designers and spoken word artists. On Sunday 7 November, the people of New Plymouth will take to the streets in mesmerising unity. Crafted by choreographer Chloe Loftus for the Taranaki Arts Festival, ‘Us’ is a processional mass movement event, a long line of community in unison, weaving through the city. This event is a celebration of the unique heart and soul of this city – its people. Drawing inspiration from Pina Bausch’s ‘lines’, this serene and symbolic mass movement happening is a reminder of the power of community. ‘Us’ brings a joyful sense of connection to each other and this city. Turkey The Bird Goes Brass New Zealand’s folk trio “Turkey The Bird” will remind you of a Margarita cocktail, infused with a hint of “Simon & Garfunkel”, two ounces of “Mumford and Sons”, a splash of Banjo, served on ice on a sunny day, placed on a massive plate of shiny brass. “Turkey The Bird” teams up with the Hāwera Brass Band for this unique performance, with beautiful three-part harmonies, toe-tapping rhythms, and catchy folk songs from their recently released debut album. Up and Away Cubbin Theatre Company

Up and Away is a playful and gentle theatrical performance created exclusively for babies. Two performers interweave elements of theatre, play and live music in a half-hour performance, which culminates in free play and exploration time for baby audience members. Up and Away is performed in a cosy, purpose-made tent. Audience numbers are limited to a small group, and only pre-walking babies may attend. This results in a calm, safe atmosphere, and optimal conditions for babies to engage in the performance, the first of its kind in New Zealand. Up and Away has been developed in consultation with a speech-language therapist, in accordance with current neuroscientific research.

BalletCollective Aotearoa in collaboration with NZTrio Experience this exciting collaboration between the newly formed BalletCollective Aotearoa and the incredible NZTrio with its stimulating inaugural programme of proudly homegrown dance, music and design. Subtle Dances is a trio of new work created by some of New Zealand’s most exciting choreographers: London-based, New Plymouth born Cameron McMillan, Loughlan Prior and Sarah Knox. With the support of the Toi Foundation, New Plymouth District Council, and Tranzit, RESET offers students throughout Taranaki the opportunity to experience an exciting new show from Thom Monkton and Circo Aereo. Thom Monkton is an international circus sensation and a local success story. Originally hailing from Pātea, South Taranaki, Thom has gone on to have worldwide success. We’re thrilled to have Thom back in Aotearoa and sharing his hilarious antics with us! The Artist is Thom’s latest and greatest solo show, a physical theatre comedy masterpiece about a nutty painter with an almighty creative block. The Artist is a hilarious story without words for comedy lovers, pranksters and the struggling artiste in all of us. Bursting with hysterical clowning, acrobatics and hijinks, this exceptional feat of storytelling has wowed audiences around the world for a reason.

Through the Eye of Taranaki Photography exhibition

A group of young Taranaki students explore climate change and environmental issues through the lens of a camera. They workshopped climate issues with leading Earth Systems Scientist Prof. Tim Naish then spent a week with professional photographers Auckland-based Raymond Sagapolutele and Taranakilocal Tania Niwa. In this exhibition, you’ll see images and powerful statements by the students sharing their views on climate change as well as photos from Raymond and Tania. By sharing ideas and working together we can cut global emissions and build towards zero by 2050.
