It’s almost unbelievable that a steep hillside overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River could be sculpted into such an elegant landscaped garden with luscious borders, majestic trees and secluded outdoor rooms. Established by the Matthews family in the 1930s, Tūpare’s central feature is a majestic house in the Arts and Crafts architectural style, based on a design by the renowned James Chapman-Taylor.

This inner-city minimalist garden adopts linear principles and is themed ‘green and white with a touch of red’. It features white petunias, white lilies and black velvet pelargoniums, with the ambience of courtyards, gazebo and buxus hedging. This 1865 propery holds a Heritage A listing and stands alongside the historical cluster known as Hen and Chickens. The protected oaks, ginkgo and pohutukawa add to the unique story. Ngā Manu (Bird Garden) has an excellent variety of plantings, including a 40-year old male giant ginkgo tree, a variety of camellia trees, hydrangeas and rhododendrons, much to the delight of the resident native birdlife which inspired the garden's name.

Corokia hedging and columnar golden beech trees create a sleek entrance into the Michael Mansvelt-designed urban garden, while a water feature, cycad palms and tropical plantings complement the modern garden office pod. Michelia trees grace the boundary fence with a rose arch, NZ native ferns, heliotrope and lush green lawns throughout the garden. Off-road parking available.
