Kia ora and welcome to the 2018 Powerco Taranaki Garden Festival The festival team This is the 31st year of New Zealand’s longest-lasting garden festival – we’ve been sharing gorgeous gardens with you since 1987.

We’re humbled by the months of hard work each gardener puts in to make their place look stunning for the 10-day festival, which brings people back year after year.

There is always a wide variety of garden styles, from formal to cottage, tropical to native, country to urban, edible to scented. This year, we have added a vegetable garden section so people can see the work of people dedicated to self-sufficiency and healthy living.

Each year, our annual Landscape Design Project allows people to be dazzled by something different. For this festival, Taranaki landscape designer Tristan Cave offers Living Rooms, a creation of two distinct garden designs for people to wander through and linger in beside New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park. This free event is perfect for the whole family.

Along with the glorious gardens, our events programme is aimed at enhancing your whole festival experience.

Take your pick from wine-tasting, a gin distillery tour, Chapman-Taylor tour, garden party, long lunch, Bollywood floral show, our popular Gardena Speaker Series, and a sizzling event with celebrity chef Ben Shewry – or do the whole lot. Make sure you book, so you don’t miss out.

You can purchase as many tickets as you need and there is no booking fee! We encourage you to pre-purchase tickets so that our gardeners are free to walk and talk with you around their gardens.

Each garden has nominated their charge of either $5, $10 or $15. Tickets are sold in $5 denominations. Free entry to gardens for children 12 and under.

Garden assessments All festival gardens get assessed. Every garden goes through this process on a three yearly cycle.

New Zealand Gardens Trust The New Zealand Gardens Trust, an initiative of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, provides an independent assessment of New Zealand gardens.

You will note that some gardens in our festival have chosen to be assessed by the Trust as well as undergoing the festival’s own assessment process.

These gardens can be identified by the placement of the NZGT logo reflecting either a Garden of Significance, National or International Significance.

New Plymouth caters to all ages and differing interests, from outdoor adventurers to book worms, avid shoppers to foodies. Along with an international triathlon every year New Plymouth hosts the internationally acclaimed WOMAD festival in Brooklands Park, which adjoins our festival garden Pukekura Park.

1. Holyoake Garden 114 Pendarves St, New Plymouth Murray and Roslyn Holyoake Edibles and art abound in this gorgeous garden surrounding a Ron-Sang designed home in the inner city.

There is no wasted space in this garden, designed by the owners.

One half of the property is devoted to a terraced productive garden. There’s a walk-in berry house, a structure with passionfruit, raised garden beds flush with vegetables and cages of bountiful berries. An olive tree lined driveway leads to the house, where the entrance is highlighted with colourful and textured subtropical plants. The planting around the house is large and bold in scale, with a lot of under planting, leading to a formal lawn in front of the house.

At the side of the house a garden featuring towering birds of paradise and Poor Kinght’s lilies, has a focal point of a giant “Lego Mario” sculpture, loved by children. The experience is completed by a café in the house where the Holyoakes offer light lunches of delicious homemade hot food, salads and sweet treats for the benefit of The New Hair Project (not for profit) helping people with hair loss. Open for the duration of the festival.

2. Hirst Cottage

94 Pendarves St, New Plymouth Judi Gopperth This popular inner city ¼-acre garden superbly combines modern, minimalist and linear principles while enhancing the historical character of the home est. 1862. 3. The Bublitz Garden 27 Durham Ave, New Plymouth Lynn and Robin Bublitz This plant collector’s paradise has been described as a miniature Pukeiti. The New Plymouth haven is filled with special plants from around the world, including rhododendrons. Lynn, who has a botany background, believes good gardens have a spiritual dimension, and that’s what you’ll find here. A garden of many levels, this has a lush lawn, surrounded by beds filled with interesting plantings, including some rare offerings. Like Pukeiti, a place dear to Lynn’s heart, this garden is backed by native bush that merges with the Te Henui Walkway. Please take extra care around the bank as some paths are steep.

4. Japanese Tea House Garden 59 Dorset Ave, New Plymouth Masashi Iwata, (Mishima, Japan) In a small back section, Mr Masashi Iwata has built an authentic tea-house in traditional Japanese style, surrounded by a compact garden designed and built

by Japanese landscape gardeners. The garden is open throughout the festival, but bookings are required for the enhanced experience of participating in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

5. Korito

28A Trafalgar St, New Plymouth Dee Turner Korito is a one-acre urban permaculture garden, developing since 2016. It showcases the many ways to grow food and is used to teach sustainability and selfsufficiency. There are mandalas, a food forest, 350 year old bush block and bush walk. A range of mulches and groundcovers are used for maintenance and encourage a high output of food. A mix of annual, biennial and perennial crops keep the gardens producing food for the entire year.

6. Nikau Grove 65F Govett Ave, New Plymouth Ian and Elsie Lind Hundreds of nikau palms set the South Pacific theme.

Native plantings and lush exotics create splashes of colour and interest throughout this developed 1.5-acre garden. Established pukatea trees with huge buttress roots form a native rainforest canopy along a natural creek. Sculptures, boardwalks, ponds, large waterfall and a weta motel also feature. 7. Pukekura Park & The Fernery Display Houses Pukekura Park Fillis St, New Plymouth Located in the heart of New Plymouth city, this 52-hectare NPDC park has an amazing range of both native and exotic plants, all displayed in a natural setting with many wonderful views and vistas of the lakes and Mt Taranaki.

The Fernery and Display Houses are a must see. These are located within Pukekura Park and more information about Guided Walks and Tours can be found on page 59.

8. Pukemara 5 Tyne Place, New Plymouth Alan Morris Rhododendron enthusiast Alan shows what can be done with this genus on a town section. The courtyard garden features sub tropical vireya rhododendrons combined with fuchsias, roses and perennials. The hillside garden at the rear is framed by mature trees and has colourful rhododendrons in complementary plantings with viburnums, hydrangeas, azaleas and hostas. Large selection of hostas and plants for sale.

9. Sequoia Steps

21A Sequoia Grove, New Plymouth Shane and Mel Hurliman A tranquil inner city hideaway orientated to comfortable outdoor living. Shane has built structures that make the most of the available space, while Mel has added the softer touches with her love of maples, hostas and pastel flowers. Te Kainga Marire New Zealand Native Garden Paradise 15 Spencer Pl, New Plymouth Valda Poletti and David Clarkson Te Kainga Marire is the only private native garden sanctuary in New Zealand to be rated as a Garden of International Significance. Te Kainga Marire’s (translated ‘peaceful encampment’) point of difference lies in the natural plant associations that evoke a feeling of the real New Zealand. This native plant paradise was developed in 1972 from clay wasteland. Keen outdoor adventurers, the owners wanted a bird friendly garden designed around the ecological groups they had observed in the wild. New Zealand native grasses, climbers, herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees have been carefully nurtured around rustic fences, a pond, a colonial bush hut and cool fern filled whare. Shy tui now regularly fly into the garden to feed.

Enjoy a guided interactive sensory experience tour with the knowledgeable owners.

11. Te Henui Cemetery

Cnr Lemon St and Watson St, New Plymouth New Plymouth’s oldest public cemetery has a park-like setting praised by those visiting lost loved ones. It even gets rave reviews on Tripadvisor: “Quite possible that this cemetery is the best inner city ‘garden’ for people looking for a quick fix of peace and tranquillity in their day.” Lovingly tended by NPDC horticulture staff and a group of active volunteer gardeners, this award-winning cemetery first opened in 1861. This heritage cemetery, steeped in local history, still has about 35 burials a year.

12. Where the Wild Things Are 26 Mayfair Pl, New Plymouth Rob and Kaye Shewry Variety in one visit! View an easy-care front garden with exotic touches, then the sloping back garden with diverse plantings, including perennials, flowers and foliage with lime and burgundy accents, herbs and vegetables and a peaceful woodland pathway with ferns, native plants and clivia. 13. The Yews 523 Carrington Rd, New Plymouth Lee and Roland Brumley Lee and Roland have chosen to create a formal garden, inspired by traditional English style, to complement the relocated grand old villa from the turn of last century.

Yew hedging is being established to give solid definition and the expansive lawns are framed by rhododendrons and rose beds in structured plantings.

14. Tupare 487 Mangorei Rd, New Plymouth Taranaki Regional Council Tupare is an arts and crafts inspired property established in 1932 by Sir Russell and Lady Matthews. It features a Chapman-Taylor designed house set amongst heritage gardens. Reflecting Lady Matthew’s legacy are a herbery, domestic glasshouse and cottage lawn borders.

Sir Russell favoured rhododendron hybrids, camellias, fuchsias, hydrangeas, magnolias and deciduous trees.

Exquisite dove trees Davidia involucrata bloom during the festival.

The plantings and landscapes at Tupare today remain true to its design and incorporate the heritage of the era.

Secluded garden rooms, elegant borders and majestic trees give this garden its soul. Glimpses of the house, the Waiwhakaiho River and Mt Taranaki can be viewed as you wander through the garden.

Taranaki Symphony Orchestra performs during the first weekend of the festival. Tupare Guided House Tours run at allocated times and guided garden walks conducted by our experienced gardeners also are available by booking through our website.

An opportunity to visit the three individually designed Chapman-Taylor homes and embrace the story of the arts and crafts era of the 1930s is available again this year, bookings are essential (See Page 55).

An exhibition of fabrics from the William Morris collection, used throughout the Tupare homestead, will be on display in the house, in association with Creative Curtains New Plymouth.

The Riot of Spring, a photographic collection by Tara Jahn-Werner will be exhibited in the gardener’s cottage.

Tupare, like Pukeiti and Hollard Gardens, is owned and managed by Taranaki Regional Council. All three regional gardens are open every day of the year and free to enter. A mobility vehicle, for those less mobile, operates during the festival.

OKATO This small coastal town is positioned along the wellknown Surf Highway 45, which boasts some of the best surf breaks in the country. Okato serves the farming community and coffee seekers. It’s also home to the iconic Stony River, one of the main rivers that flows from Mt Taranaki.

• The Oakura Arts Trail is on Sat 27 and Sun 28 Oct as well as Sat 3 and Sun 4 Nov from 10am to 4pm.

15. Pukeiti 2290 Carrington Rd, New Plymouth Taranaki Regional Council Pukeiti houses a world-class rhododendron collection uniquely nestled in Taranaki rainforest. It was established in 1951 and is now proudly owned and managed by Taranaki Regional Council.

Experience an explosion of colour as hundreds of rhododendrons and azaleas flower against the lush backdrop of forested volcanic ranges, mountain streams and birdsong. There are many kilometres of paths and tracks for either a garden walk or a longer adventure into the rainforest. In particular the Rhododendron Stroll, which includes the beautifully scented Loderi, a treat for the senses in spring.

On arrival at the Rainforest Centre, the Rimu Room offers a snapshot of the rich history of this spectacular garden and the local area. Enjoy the hospitality of the Founders Café, open daily from 10am to 4pm throughout the festival.

The newly completed Lodge is the latest in a comprehensive redevelopment project. During the festival a contemporary botanical exhibition In another light; Rhododendron Project (part 2) featuring work by Artist in Residence Tabatha Forbes, will be on show in the Lodge for the month of November. The Lodge will also house a flower display of best blooms from Pukeiti.

Other recently completed garden projects at Pukeiti such as the Misty Knoll, Treehouse Trails and the Keiller Garden embrace the ever-evolving union of natural landscape and thoughtful design concepts, enticing you to explore the mystery of such an exotic environment.

Bookings are essential for large groups and garden tours during this busy time, please call 0800 736 222 for information and enquiries. A mobility vehicle is available for those less able.

Pukeiti, like Hollard Gardens and Tupare, is owned and managed by Taranaki Regional Council. All three gardens are free to enter and open every day of the year.

17. Goodin Country Garden 158 Mirikau Rd, Warea Chris and Steak Goodin Set amidst old coastal lahars, very large volcanic rocks lend drama to this garden. Spacious lawns spread out from the family home and are surrounded by trees and abundant flowering plants, including flowering roses and rhododendrons.

Chris and Steak’s daughter, Nicci Goodin, is a prominent New Plymouth florist and much of the planting is with her creativity in mind.

18. The van der Poel Garden 92 Ruakere Rd, Warea, Okato Maria and Hugo van der Poel Just 30 minutes drive from New Plymouth, this large spacious country garden originated with an emphasis on vegetables, fruit trees, beehives and livestock.

MANAIA Home to Yarrows, one of the largest bakeries in the country (established in 1912), Manaia has been nicknamed the “bread capital”. Its real name comes from the former Māori chief of the district, Hukunui Manaia.

A model loaf of bread welcomes people into the town, where they can stop by the bakery, admire an historic band stand or pay homage to a statue of George, a Jack Russell, who died protecting five Manaia children from an attack by two pit bulls in 2009.

HAWERA The main hub of South Taranaki is a bustling town known for its eateries and iconic water tower. The latter was built in 1914 to assist firefighting in the town, which was hit by devastating blazes in 1884, 1888, and 1912. Aptly, the Māori name of Hawera means “the burnt place” or “breath of fire”.

It is also known as the home of writer Ronald Hugh Morrieson and an important service town for the dairy industry. Whareroa, the world’s largest dairy factory complex is just out of town.

KenKora 197 Ihaia Rd, Opunake Kerry Kelly-Drought and Michael Drought With fun and great passion, Michael and Kerry have created alfresco settings in their stylish garden, which encircles the 107-year-old villa KenKora. Buxus hedges and roses surround the property, with mass plantings providing year-round green-leaf glory. 21. Openlands 1064 Auroa Rd, Manaia Marie Mills Nearly 70 years ago, Openlands consisted of a homestead and two trees. 22. Sanderson Garden 1961 South Rd, Manaia John and Elaine Sanderson A homely warm welcome awaits visitors at this twoacre coastal farm garden, which relies on good shelter given its windy location. Expansive lawns and well established garden beds set amongst the sheltering trees give a flow to the garden, which features recycled farm treasures.

23. Oakley Garden 79 Lower Normanby Rd, Manaia Guy and Jenny Oakley Join festival stalwart Jenny Oakley who has entered her garden into the festival for the full 31 years. Just 2km from an exposed coastline, shelter is an important aspect for the Oakley Garden. Features include brick walls and pillars, cottage style plantings, early flowering roses, vegetable potager and the remarkable hanging baskets for which she is renowned. Plants for sale and complimentary tea/coffee.

Gravetye 60 Manawapou Rd, Hawera Jenny and John Pease In the twelfth year of it’s development, this formal garden contains many interesting features – a lime walk, laburnum arch, a reflection pool, a grass sculpture and an enclosed vegetable garden. These radiate out from the house. Hedges define each area that contain topiary, sculptures and plantings of iris, roses and lavender. A perennial border is the most recent addition. The garden was designed and planted by the owners. Rush Munro ice cream tubs available.

25. Mary’s Place 190 Glover Rd, Hawera Mary Dickson Take one step into Mary’s Place and you’ll be dazzled by colour, form and fascinating plants. This highly detailed and immaculate town garden reflects the lifelong gardening experience of Mary, who has been part of the festival since its inception in 1987. Archways are draped with climbing roses and clematis, layered plantings provide depth and small water features add movement and sound. The clever use of found objects and container plants thick with flowers and foliage add to this inspiring, flowing garden of many hues.

26. Tairoa Lodge 3 Puawai St, Hawera Linda Morrison History and beauty combine to create a soothing garden picture against a rural backdrop in Hawera.

27. Sullivan Garden 283 Matangarara Rd, Hawera Peter and Neryda Sullivan It began as an asparagus paddock and, over 20 years, was transformed into a curvaceous garden. This Hawera beauty is plump with roses and rhododendrons (about 150) and ablaze with azaleas. Curved paths and clipped hedges provide definition and form, while sweeping lawns frame views of Mt Taranaki. Cottage plantings, pots brimming with flowers and foliage, along with garden art, help create pictures throughout. The Sullivan Garden featured in the July 2016 issue of NZ House & Garden magazine.

28. Puketarata 14 Ngawhini Rd, Hawera Ken and Jennifer Horner Developed since 1978, this country garden folds quietly around its hilltop site with mountain and inland Taranaki views. It is adjacent to the outer ramparts of the 400-year-old Puketarata Pa and kainga Keteonatea, both of major significance to our area. During the festival, Ken, an avid amateur historian, will lead three tours through these so people can learn and appreciate their rich history.

A particular strength in this well-designed and diverse garden, is the way a love of natives is skilfully blended with exotic varieties to give seasonal variety. Generous herbaceous plantings, lawn tennis court, perennial border, orchard, berry house, vegetable garden and parterre, are enhanced by the wider landscape and garden sculptures.

The gully below has a QEII covenant, with natives, exotics and walking tracks.

King Edward Park Cnr Upper High St and Waihi Rd, Hawera South Taranaki District Council The Edwardian ancestry of King Edward Park can be seen in its charmingly formal design, home to floral borders and rose gardens, grassy avenues and aged trees. Eltham is a town of many firsts. The first pound of butter was made there, it had New Zealand’s first tarred macadam street, and was the country’s first place to manufacture rennet, important for cheese making. It even has a water reservoir painted like a round of cheese.

It’s also known for its antique and curiosity shops.

• A visit to the breath-taking Dawson Falls on Mt Taranaki. The falls are a 10-minute walk from the carpark at the top of Manaia Rd, Kaponga.

• The Forgotten World Highway (SH 43) drive is a unique example of untamed native bush and stunning natural scenery. Stop for tasty fare at the Whangamomona Hotel, 6018 Ohura Rd, SH43.

STRATFORD Nestled against the eastern shoulder of Mt Taranaki, Stratford is a tribute to the great bard William Shakespeare and is named after his birthplace in Warwickshire. The town features 67 streets named after characters from an assortment of Shakespeare’s plays. Stratford, population 9000, is also home to the only Glockenspiel clock tower in New Zealand and is the starting point of the Forgotten World Highway to Taumarunui.

INGLEWOOD Inglewood is a quaint town 16km southeast of New Plymouth. As well as laying claim to eight buildings classified by the New Zealand Historical Places Trust, it is also home to the oldest remaining railway station on its original site in New Zealand.

Hollard Gardens 1686 Upper Manaia Rd, Kaponga Taranaki Regional Gardens With great views of Mt Taranaki, Hollard Gardens is a 4.5-hectare property located in central Taranaki, close to Egmont National Park. First established in 1927 by plantsman Bernie Hollard, the gardens boast a plant collection of national importance including many rhododendrons and unusual plants.

Stroll the hidden paths through the mature and intimate Old Garden, and then by contrast appreciate the openness and diversity of the New Garden. In spring, the rainbow of colour in the swamp garden is a must-see as well as Bernie’s Home Garden, where fruit and vegetable growing methods are trialled and demonstrated.

The Hollard Centre offers a warm and inviting environment to relax and discover the garden history, enjoy family photographs and view a slide show of the original gardens. The retro décor and the old-world charm of the centre is where light refreshments are available and we welcome picnickers to share this space with us.

Waitara, 15km northeast of New Plymouth, has a deep history and a powerful present. The most impressive feature of the town is the Waitara River, which flows through its heart. The banks of the river were the scene of a significant battle during the Taranaki Land Wars of the 1860s and involved more than 2000 men.

These days, Waitara, population 6000, is known as the energy hub of the region with the giant Methanex plant sitting on its outskirts. It produces export methanol.

The mostly flat terrain has enabled many easy walking avenues and vista viewpoints. This garden is well known for the herbaceous peonies that usually flower during the festival.

1121 Main North Rd, RD43, Onaero, Waitara Rosanna Paterson and Evan Ryder This 4.5-hectare farm and retreat is teeming with a huge variety of vegetables and fruit trees. This largely selfsustainable property, named after the ancient pa site on its boundary, utilises crop rotation, seed preservation, companion planting and mulching. You can see lambs, baby calves, an earth room to store the garden’s generous bounty, and hear about Rosanna’s preserves and pickles – nothing goes to waste at Pukemiro. If you’re lucky, she may perform an impromptu acapella.

38. Te Kukumara 10 Mountain Rd, New Plymouth Bryce and Delwyn Barnett A palm-lined driveway welcomes people to Te Kukumara, a landscaped garden with many different spaces to explore. Mass plantings give a relaxed feel to this property, which features deciduous trees, native plants, a large lake, spacious lawns, resort-style courtyard, raised vegetable gardens, bird aviary, and a large flock of white pigeon doves. Of interest is an eclectic collection of sculptures, a children’s playground, croquet/archery lawn and a magnificent collection of cars. Visitors can view everything from an Austin A40, to a military Hummer; large American classics to British sports cars. The latest addition is a 1970 Plymouth Superbird – an American muscle car.

IT’S TIME TO BE WOWED by two extremely different gardens created by landscape designer Tristan Cave.

The Taranaki man has been commissioned to form an “active garden” for the busy city family and a “resting garden” for plant lovers in a space beside Pukekura Park in New Plymouth.

Expect to be immersed in and inspired by the possibilities of outdoor living presented in these Living Rooms.

The active garden has minimal planting, but has a sandpit, lawn with a mini-putt, graffiti mural, colourful Perspex screens, turf cubes to sit on, raised beds and a shade sail.

In contrast, the resting garden is a tranquil place teeming with plants. Around a circular seating area, 48

you’ll discover trees green with spring growth, hostas, ferns, flowering perennials, deciduous azaleas, Japanese maples, miniature red-hot pokers and a tulip centre piece. “I envisage this as a plant collectors’ paradise,” Tristan says.

Living Rooms is an uplifting garden installation to be explored and enjoyed by everyone. “I just wanted it to have the wow factor.”

WITH DEEP ROOTS IN GARDENING and Taranaki, Living Rooms creator Tristan Cave is a well-travelled landscape designer. Always with his hands in the soil, Tristan has worked around New Zealand and overseas. In England, he gained valuable knowledge as a hard landscaper’s labourer. “I travelled around London working on big exciting projects that went on forever.”

He’s also spent time in Europe, Canada and Thailand and on his return to Taranaki worked for

Like the plants he works with, Tristan never stops growing. He’s always seeking new ways of creating gardens, believes in re-using, recycling and being water wise, and thrives on visiting garden shows and attending landscape conferences.

He hopes the Living Rooms installation will show people how they can create something special in a small space.

Supported by the TSB Community Trust, this project will be available for the whole family to enjoy for free during the 31st garden festival.

Mitre 10 - Sizzling with Ben Shewry Craft beer, gourmet sausages and a world-renowned chef combine for a sizzling event at this year festival.

Ben Shewry, owner of acclaimed Melbourne restaurant Attica, will present an evening of storytelling, food and beer tasting.

Born in New Zealand in 1977, Ben is the son of festival gardeners Rob and Kaye Shewry (Where the Wild Things Are). He moved across the Tasman to Melbourne in 2002 and three years later took on his first head chef role at Attica.

Originally obsessed with the detail and balance of Thai food, Ben began to develop a style at Attica that reflected his rural New Zealand upbringing and, increasingly, a fascination with Australian indigenous ingredients.

Ben Shewry Never interested in using indigenous ingredients in a tokenistic way, he made it his mission to learn about the culture and cuisine behind the ingredients from indigenous Australians.

In 2015, Ben became the sole owner of Attica, realising the dream and goal of being fully independent. That same year, he starred in an episode of Chef’s Table on Netflix and, in 2017, Attica was named one of the top 50 restaurants in the world.

An evening with this award-winning chef is a rare treat for foodies, craft beer lovers and anybody interested in an inspiring success story. Ben Shewry will be sizzling – we promise.

An Ancient Garden - History of Puketarata With Ken Horner

Join Jodi for a daily tour around Roebuck Farm, a thriving market garden and restoration grazing property at Omata.

You’ll see the production of fast-growing salad greens, including microgreens, and how they are harvested using small innovative tools and cleaned in a new wash room.

Alongside the plants, the land is home to 50 TexelCheviot-cross sheep, used to thicken and improve the pastures through timed grazing. There will be lambs frolicking about during festival time, so bring your children to see them.

An educator and avid learner, Jodi has been inspired on his travels by a couple of “rock star” market gardeners from Canada, Curtis Stone from Kelowna and JeanMartin Fortier from Quebec.

The dedicated seed keeper says the focus of the farm has greatly changed – and there’s a new driveway. “Anyone who’s seen the farm in the past, will not recognise it.”

From bush clearings to a palisaded earth structure, Māori lived and gardened at Puketarata or its adjacent kainga (village) Keteonetea for four or five hundred years. Well located, there was a defensive position sited in a bush clearing, with fresh water, the nearby Mangemange river, and an escape route up a forest track to the safety of the Ngaere swamp.

Sometime around the 15th or 16th centuries, the age of pa building began and Puketarata pa is one of a number in the valley. Little specific history is known of that time.

The musket wars beginning in the 1820s impacted heavily on Taranaki and on Puketarata/Keteonetea. The arrival of Pakeha in increasing numbers from 1840, the 1860s’ land wars and the consequent confiscation of Māori land had a destructive effect throughout Taranaki.

Puketarata garden lies just inside an outer pa rampart, on a warm, north-facing, free-draining slope.

Join Pip in a floral workshop where you will learn tips and techniques to produce your own luxe spring bouquet, wrapped and presented to perfection. Spring brings a lavishness of beautiful blooms and foliage, so in this hands-on workshop you will take home the knowledge and your very own seasonal bouquet.

Take a walk around a permaculture urban food forest with gardener and teacher Dee Turner. See how you can combine fruit trees, fruiting crops, perennials, root crops, bulbs and climbers into an enhanced foodscape that feeds itself. Dee has done away with the conventional orchard and mowing, and instead grows plant guilds around her fruit trees to feed them, keep away the bugs, and obtain a yield all at the same time. Herb and edible groundcovers grow where grass once was, as well as alpine strawberries in profusion. Productive self-seeders sow themselves every season and perennial root crops don’t need planting every year. There’s always food to harvest all year round with minimal weeding and pruning – a great solution for a busy lifestyle.

Jenny is a garden festival veteran. She’s one of the very few who have been entering their properties for the full 30 years of the festival. Jenny and Guy’s garden became a Garden of National Significance in 2005.

Jenny has a Bachelor of Amenity Horticulture, is a Trustee of the New Zealand Gardens Trust and is also on the garden assessment team for the festival. She does regular speaking events around the region and has accomplished a good deal of commercial garden design and maintenance in her career.

Jenny is also well known for her hanging baskets! She spent the English spring of 2000 touring English garden centres demonstrating how to make them. So if you are in Taranaki for the festival don’t miss one of her workshops. She holds them in her garden, which is a joy in itself to experience.

Mark’s keen interest in our native flora led to him and his wife establishing Naturally Native, one of the country’s largest native plant nurseries in Tauranga. For more than 40 years he has grown and promoted the use of native plants in NZ Gardens. In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious Loder Cup for his work conserving and promoting the use of our unique flora.

This session will take participants on a tour of the magnificent Te Kainga Marire garden, sharing practical information and stories of the plants as we walk around.

There will be an emphasis on using our natives in coastal gardens; where to grow them, how to care for them and how to create your own successful native plant garden.

Fernery and Display House – Pukekura Park Do you ever wonder how NPDC’s Pukekura Park Fernery team put together and manage the displays in the Fernery and Display Houses?

This tour and the display demonstration will give you a first-hand look at what goes into creating this stunning collection.

You will learn the history and the background of this beautiful haven, which includes native ferns, colourful coleus and exotic foliage plants, and the elegant orchids.

Te Henui Cemetery Guided Tours For a respectful stroll among the headstones, join some of the cemetery’s garden volunteers.

A mixture of gardening and history, these tours will take you into the heart of a heritage cemetery set in a tranquil garden.

Te Henui Cemetery had its first burial in 1861 and has slowly filled up, gathering a rich store of local tales over nearly 160 years. These stories and an appreciation of the park-like setting will be shared by the passionate

caretakers of this final resting place.

Art not to miss The Riot of Spring: Springtime at Tupare by Tara Jahn-Werner In Another Light by Tabatha Forbes In Another Light is a two-part, two-venue exhibition by visual artist Tabatha Forbes whose work draws on the histories of the Pukeiti Rhododendron Garden and considers a new view of the region’s beloved rock-star of plants - the rhododendron.

Walking through Tupare during springtime is always a deeply moving experience, since every part of this magnificent garden is simply bursting with energy.

The Riot of Spring is the final exhibition in a series highlighting the beauty of Tupare throughout the seasons.

Using a small Leica digital camera photographer Tara Jahn-Werner focuses on the contrasting temperaments of spring blooms. Sometimes introspective and moody, other times outright extrovert, every flower has the capacity to engross.

Ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal and regrowth come to mind. To paraphrase Igor Stravinsky’s virtuosic and primeval-sounding orchestral work The Rite of Spring, Tupare features a riot of colour everywhere.

Soft white and deep red rhododendrons contrast sharply with the pink vividness of camellias, which in turn match the equally spectacular hues of purple clematis and stunning orange clivia.

Inspired by a well-established tradition of photographers and artists who have focused on flowers at some stage in their work, Tara says that two in particular; Ernst Haas and the painter Georgia O’Keeffe have had a direct influence on the exhibition. “Especially Haas, who devoted the last ten years of his life to the study of Buddhism; and suggested that the entire universe can be contained within a flower,” she says.

With clever design this garden nurtures itself greywater feeds a banana and taro mulch basin before seeping under the chook strawyard, collecting nutrients to feed the vege gardens downhill! Mulch is grown on site for fruit trees and vege beds. Uphill of the house, there is a grove of mini avocados and citrus, and a baby subtropical food forest.

Four years ago Miranda downsized to a 550m2 suburban section, bringing with her fruit trees and berry bushes from her previous site. Within a year she had removed all the lawns to build vege beds, established a food forest with a variety of fruit and berries, erected a greenhouse and welcomed in bees. This is a great small section showcase.

Nick has a suburban property where water is a key feature. Recycled tanks store 6000 litres of rainwater, which flow into a network of swales that weave through a food forest and 12 round garden beds. The beds are gardened using a chook tractor. In a full cycle system, Nick makes compost, germinates his own seedlings, preserves or swaps excess produce, and saves seeds.

Nathan’s 9-year-old garden looks down the valley to the Huatoki Walkway. The property is a mixture of fruit trees, including many subtropicals, and plants that provide food and habitat for native birds, lizards and bees. Included on the property are a 2000 litre rainwater water collecting tank for the vege garden, a worm farm, compost bins, and free range chooks.

Andrew’s garden is a mix of plants for eating, smelling and admiring. Snuggled around the small property are a variety of fruit and native trees, a chicken tractor, composting, a worm farm and raised vegetable beds.

These are landscaped into the property with a focus on raw, recycled materials and found objects.

Gareth’s property is an inspiring hilltop quarter-acre garden following permaculture principles. It includes terraced vege gardens, a food forest, subtropical pocket, and chickens. The property hosted a Sustainable Taranaki Eco-Building Workshop this year, which created a rammed earth wall seat.

Franziska’s small section makes great use of space.

Using espalier pruning, it is home to 30 types of fruit and berries. Alongside this are vegetable gardens, chickens, a worm farm, and compost brews. A greenhouse is attached to the house, growing food and warming the home. The house features solar panels, which charge an electric car. Franziska is the founder of Crop Swap.

Using espalier and vertical spaces to maximum effect, Tricia’s 514 m2 urban section features fruit trees, berries, herbs, edible weeds, flowers, raised vege beds, chook gardens, a worm farm, and a tumbler compost bin – a productive backyard farm in the suburbs. Tricia has a special interest in using hens as garden helpers, and she preserves produce to have year round supply.

Nelle and Bruce are suburban lifestylers, with a 2.25acre property in Spotswood. Starting with horse paddocks 20 years ago, the property is now home to ducks, chickens, Kuni-Kuni pigs and many birds. The property includes extensive shelter belts, an orchard, and a large medicinal plant garden. Rain water is collected for use in the gardens, while solar panels power their home.

Martin and Ann started on a 3-acre paddock. They planted two orchards, along with perimeter shelter belts.

The property boasts a herb spiral, asparagus bed, berry house, developing food forest, fodder trees for animals, a biodynamic flow form, and blacksmithing shed. A variety of animals share the property, with a small flock of sheep, chooks, ducks, turkeys, bees, rabbits, and pigs.

Michael and Linda live on 10 acres in an eco-house made of untreated macrocarpa timber. They generate all their own power via a large 20kW solar panel array and 1.5kW hydro turbine. This system powers the property, including their onsite business manufacturing hydro turbine products incorporating recycled materials.

Surplus power heats water for central heating and charges their electric vehicles.

Deb is in love with all things feathered and breeds heritage chickens and ducks. Breeds include mixed Pekin/Indian Runner ducks, Orpington, Barnevelder, Light Sussex, Rhode Island Red and Plymouth Barred Rock chooks. They have their own hatchery and visitors will be able to view the incubators, brooding boxes and a selection of chicks at various stages of development.

Matt and Melissa are Farmers Market regulars, selling Bio-Gro certified feijoas, juice and surplus produce from their 10-acre property. Their hempcrete house is famous in Taranaki, with grid tied solar power, a composting toilet and mulch basins for grey water.

With Melanie a landscape architect and Matt a carpenter, it’s no wonder their property transformation has been rapid. In just 3 years they have transformed their ex-dairy farm, house and land into a productive landscape.

Jo-anne and Allan live off the grid on their 5ha property.

Solar panels and windmills provide their power, stored in recycled batteries. Allan has built the glasshouse, windmill and other garden structures from reused and recycled materials. Jo-anne has established a large permaculture, self-seeding garden and orchard. Plans are in place to build a passive solar house this summer.

Green Acres is a 120-acre certified organic farm, featuring a 1-acre no dig garden, and 25 year old native shelter belts, wetlands and bush. Flowers are integrated into vegetable production in the house garden, which features intensive mulching, dry-stone walls and ponds.

Daniela and Chris are self-sufficient in fruit, veggies, eggs, meat, and honey!

Hazel and Derek bought 10 acres of bare paddock 5 years ago. Sectioning off fields with shelter belts, they then planted more than 2500 trees and introduced horses, pigs, goats, geese, chooks and ducks. The site boasts a developing food forest, veggie beds and greenhouses.

Their house is a solar passive e-Haus, with integrated grey and blackwater systems.

Maria and Simon have a 9.5-acre off-the-grid lifestyle farm. The property boasts a heritage fruit orchard, Potager garden, a wetland, terraced gardens, medicinal and culinary herbs. Their home is a passive solar design featuring home-grown timbers, an Aquatron toilet and an Esse Ironheart wood burning oven.

Sustainability, Te Reo Māori language revitalisation, collectivity, tino rangatiratanga and peaceful resistance all meld into one at the Parihaka community gardens.

The garden and food forest support the three marae as well as providing a peaceful place to work together, fulfilling the legacy of Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai of looking after one another and building positive relationships.

In 2015, growing partners Toby and Ryan created Kaitake Farm, a market garden set up on a former certified organic kiwifruit orchard run by Toby’s parents.

Kaitake Farm uses innovative vegetable growing methods, with the focus of growing local food for local people - most of their produce is all sold within a few kilometers of where it is grown!

Piwakawaka Eddy 602 Pembroke Rd, Stratford Elizabeth Proux Liz’s property is developed on permaculture principles, with vegetables close to the house while the orchard and berries are further away. Her small house is a converted shed, with recycled materials used where possible. Her home is off grid, powered by a 3.4kw solar array with battery storage, and has a composting toilet.

Upcycled Acres 113 Warwick Rd, Stratford Phil Bielawski and Catherine Groenestein Phil and Catherine’s garden under the mountain’s shadow, enjoying great views but also high winds and rainfall, necessitated some smart thinking and experimentation. They have raised vegetable beds, fruit trees, a large green house for frost tender veges, Wiltshire sheep, donkeys and heritage breed chickens.

They use organic methods and like to recycle and reuse scrapyard finds in their garden.

Sue and Greg live on a 140-acre forestry and grazing farm. Their off the grid house is of passive solar design, and includes a composting toilet and grey water system. Near the house are vege gardens, a food forest, tunnel houses, hugel swales, a berry and shade house, and a menagerie of animals. They enjoy seed saving and preserving food.

Lorraine’s suburban 1/4 acre dispels the myth that organic gardening is always messy. In a few short years she has established a food forest, plastic house, shade house, pizza oven, worm farm, vegetable garden and chooks - all within a tight budget and using scrapyard treasures. Lorraine enjoys using the lasagne bed growing system to build soil fertility.

Toko School was the first school in Taranaki to be awarded Green Gold recognition by EnviroSchools. The school integrates sustainability into all aspects of its curriculum and projects are student-led. At Toko School you will see a fertiliser factory, recycled bottle house, chickens, an environmental arts trail, a heritage orchard, a bug hotel, bee hives, distilling and more.

E Kai is a community cooperative that began in 2013 with the aim of supplying fresh vegetables to the local Foodbank. The gardens have 8 raised bio-intensive garden beds, 2 lasagne beds, an experimental food forest under native trees, compost, a worm farm and rainwater storage systems. They foster involvement from the local kōhanga reo and kindergarten to share food growing experiences with children.

Shamjo Gardens is an urban farming venture. In 2016 Amanda turned the lawn of their section into garden beds, focusing on producing fresh cut and potted herbs for market. She uses the principles of allelopathy and companion planting rather than herbicides and pesticides. Amanda grows her own composting materials, and uses chickens and worm farms to make compost and vermicasts.

The mission at Goldbush Micro Farm is to provide farm to table food and knowledge to the local community. The market garden is based on the bio-intensive gardening style of growing, while their off-grid solar powered home has a Homestar rating of 8 and a wormorator wastewater system. They use regenerative grazing to improve the land, and have a developing food forest.
