Welcome to this year’s Garden Spectacular! This is truly a special year for the Garden Spectacular as we’re turning 30! We’re now one of the longest running and most popular garden festivals in New Zealand. Each year we strive to offer a new and exciting line up of events and of course - a spectacular range of gardens. We have 47 gardens in our festival this year – 42 of which are privately owned ranging from classic rambling country gardens, to sub-tropical retreats to inner-city sanctuaries. Meet the owners and be inspired and informed by their garden creations. One unique event each year is our Landscape Design Project. Always different and always beautiful – this year we have Radiant Garden by video projection artist Tim Gruchy. Tim will be creating a flora and fauna projection of spectacular proportions on the outside of our own two-storey festival building. Don’t miss it! You can pre-purchase tickets at official ticket outlets (see page 65), or at any of our festival gardens. You can purchase as many tickets as you need and there is no booking fee! We encourage you to prepurchase tickets so that our gardeners are free to walk and talk you around their gardens. Each garden has nominated their charge of either $5, $10 or $15. Tickets are sold in $5 denominations, so that a $5 garden requires one ticket and a $10 garden requires two tickets etc. Children 12 and under, free. Look out for the following symbol 2 in the garden descriptions. This symbol highlights how many tickets you need to visit that garden.

Garden Assessments All festival gardens have been assessed. Every garden goes through this process on a three yearly cycle.

New Zealand Gardens Trust The New Zealand Gardens Trust, an initiative of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, provides an independent assessment of New Zealand gardens.

You will note that some gardens in our festival have chosen to be assessed by the Trust as well as undergoing the festival’s own assessment process. These gardens can be identified by the placement of the NZGT logo reflecting either a Garden of Significance, National or International Significance.

HAWERA

Located at the halfway point along Surf Highway 45, Opunake and its beaches feature many world-renowned surf breaks and great opportunities for water sports, including fishing. The town’s vibrant centre caters to all visitors with distinct murals for inspection, heritage walks and antique stores for history enthusiasts and cafés to satisfy a variety of palettes.

As South Taranaki’s main hub, this bustling town services the wider farming region of over 11,000 people. In Ma-ori, Hawera means ‘the burnt place’ or ‘breath of fire’, a seemingly suitable name after the town had a triple dose of devastating blazes in 1884, 1888 and 1912. To make the fire-fighting easier, a large water tower was built in 1914, which watches over the town to this day and remains one of Taranaki’s best-known heritage landmarks. Hawera has grown in recent years to support the surrounding farms and now boasts the largest dairy factory complex in the world called Whareroa.

Opunake has bred a great many New Zealand athletes including Olympic medal winner Sir Peter Snell. Snell’s gold achievements are now permanently emblazoned in bronze with a statue of the famed runner caught in motion on Opunake’s main road.

MANAIA Manaia is a quaint town steeped in historical ambience located just 14km north-west of Hawera. The town is named after the former Ma-ori chief of the district, Hukunui Manaia. One of the largest bakeries in the country, the Yarrow’s family bakery, was established in Manaia in 1912, which sprouted the town’s nickname the ‘bread capital’ and continues to employ a large proportion of Manaia’s population today. The small township gained international news coverage in 2009 when a local Jack Russell named George died protecting five local children from an attack by two pit bulls. George was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal (the animal version of the George Cross) and the town erected a statue in his honour, located in the town centre.

Tables are set up on both the outside decking overlooking the garden and inside the cottage for you to enjoy a freshly brewed coffee, pot of tea and freshly made homemade treats served on English bone china. 60 Manawapou Rd, Hawera Jenny & John Pease In the eleventh year of development, this formal garden contains a lime walk, laburnum arch, a reflection pool, a grass sculpture and an enclosed vegetable garden that all radiate from the house. Hedges define each area that contains topiary and sculptures with iris, roses and lavender. The garden was designed, planted and is maintained by the owners. Rush Munro ice cream tubs available. 283 Matangara Rd, Hawera Peter & Neryda Sullivan The transition from asparagus paddock to garden has taken 20 years. A variety of clipped hedges gives sharp definition and form while sweeping lawns frame views to the mountain and the surrounding countryside. Many rhododendrons and roses give colour in springtime and cottage plantings, pots and garden art add points of detail and interest throughout. Featured in the July 2016 NZ House & Garden magazine.

34 Rata St, Hawera Bruce & Pam Palmer This large town garden has been developed from farm land over the last 40 years. Flowering Shimidsu Sakura cherry trees are on the frontage of the property. A spacious sloping lawn is surrounded by garden and specimen trees. The peaceful woodland area in the sheltered dell embraces a stream and features clivias, hostas, ferns, palms and rhododendrons. A unique garden shed and rusty relics are discreetly scattered through part of the garden. Devonshire teas available.

4. Mary’s Place 190 Glover Rd, Hawera Mary Dickson This highly detailed town garden is packed with interesting plants and colour, reflecting the lifelong gardening experience of the owner. Archways are draped with climbing roses and clematis. The clever use of found objects, small water features and container plants will give inspiration while all is set off by immaculate presentation and management.

5. King Edward Park Cnr Upper High St, Waihi Rd. Hawera South Taranaki District Council King Edward Park, Edwardian in ancestry, its charmingly formal design is home to floral borders and rose gardens, grassy avenues and aged trees. Ducks and occasional model yachts reflect in the century-old boating pond and the unique Wendy statue searches endlessly for the lost boys in an avenue of mature rhododendrons. Seek out some of the park’s hidden features along pathways offering different perspectives of its ever-changing gardens, or enjoy a picnic in a sylvan setting. 6. Puketarata Garden 14 Ngawhini Rd, Hawera Jennifer & Ken Horner A country garden developed since 1978, folding quietly around its hilltop site with mountain and inland Taranaki views. Adjacent to the outer ramparts of 400 year old Puketarata Pa and kainga Keteonatea, both of major significance to our area. A love of natives skillfully blended with exotic varieties giving seasonal variety is a particular strength. Generous herbaceous plantings, lawn tennis court, perennial border, orchard, berry house, vegetable garden and parterre, are enhanced by the wider landscape. Diversity of different areas, planting and design give this garden its individual and unique character. The gully below has a QEII Covenant, with natives, exotics and walking tracks. Dunlop Garden 174 Ohawe Rd, Hawera Ross & Jan Dunlop A well-established, relaxed rural garden that sits naturally into the coastal landscape with a native area, vegetable garden, sea and mountain views. Wide sweeping lawns complement the scale of the character home built in 1937. The local community owned Lysaght Watt Gallery will have art work for sale in the wool shed. Guest artists include Jimi Walsh, Jack Marsden Mayer and Helen Cairney. Unusual perennials for sale from Mara Nursery.

79 Lower Normanby Rd, Manaia Jenny & Guy Oakley Join festival stalwart Jenny Oakley who has entered her garden into the festival for the full 30 years. Just 2km from an exposed coastline, shelter is an important aspect for the Oakley Garden. Features include brick walls and pillars, cottage style plantings, early flowering roses, vegetable potager and the remarkable hanging baskets for which she is renowned. Plants for sale and complimentary tea/coffee.

9. Sanderson Garden 1961 South Road, Manaia John & Elaine Sanderson A homely warm welcome awaits visitors at this twoacre coastal farm garden, which relies on good shelter given its windy location. Expansive lawns and wellestablished garden beds set amongst the sheltering trees give a flow to the garden featuring recycled farm treasures. Visit Elaine’s on-site Christmas Shop to give you inspiration for the festive season. Plenty of off-road parking and complimentary tea/coffee.

10. Boxwood

820 Patiki Rd, Opunake Jo & Murray Collins This garden is largely a formal woodland area with plantings of deciduous, flowering evergreens and perennials. Areas have been developed that showcase Jo’s love of design and plants, including a subtropical area, formal borders, and a prairie style garden. Phyllis’ love for floral art means she enjoys a garden filled with the flowers of spring. Also included are an established fruit orchard, vegetable garden, woodland and bog areas. Hollard Gardens 1686 Upper Manaia Rd, Kaponga Taranaki Regional Council With great views of Mt Taranaki, Hollard Gardens is a 4.5 hectare property located in central Taranaki, close to Egmont National Park. First established in 1927 by plantsman Bernie Hollard, the gardens boast a plant collection of national importance including many rhododendrons and unusual plants. Stroll the hidden paths through the mature and intimate Old Garden, and then by contrast appreciate the openness and diversity of the New Garden. In spring, the rainbow of colour in the Swamp Garden is a must-see as well as Bernie’s Home Garden, where fruit and vegetable growing methods are trialled and demonstrated. The Hollard Centre offers a warm and inviting environment to relax and discover the garden history, enjoy the family photographs and view the slide show of the original gardens. The retro décor and the oldworld charm of the centre is where light refreshments are available and we welcome picnickers to share this space with us. Bookings are essential for larger groups and tours during this busy time, please call 0800 736 222 for information and enquiries. Hollard Gardens, like Pukeiti and Tupare is owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council. All three gardens are free to enter and open every day of the year.

Eltham is known as the cradle of the Taranaki dairy industry (the co-operative system in particular), and for being the one place in New Zealand that manufactured rennet, which is important in cheese making. It was also the first place to export butter to England. Settlement began in Eltham in the 1870s with blocks of densely forested land being taken up. A profusion of sawmilling companies cleared the district, which when grassed was found to be ideal for dairy farming. Eltham has more vintage shops per capita than any other town in New Zealand.

Inglewood is a quaint town 16km southeast of New Plymouth, nestled under the impressive form of Mt Taranaki. The town boasts a population of more than 3,000, servicing a predominantly dairy farming region. As well as laying claim to eight buildings classified as New Zealand Historical Places it is also home to the oldest remaining railway station on its original site in New Zealand. While this town may be small in size, it is huge in character and reputation.

STRATFORD

• A visit to the breath-taking Dawson Falls located at the top of Manaia Rd, Kaponga. The falls are a short 10-minute walk from the carpark.

This town is a tribute to the great bard William Shakespeare, named after his birthplace in Warwickshire. The town features 67 streets named after characters from an assortment of Shakespeare’s plays. The town is nestled against the eastern shoulder of Mt Taranaki and the near 9,000 residents are accustomed to a snowfall or two during winter. Stratford is also home to the only Glockenspiel clock tower in New Zealand. The town is also the starting point of the Forgotten World Highway, the route to Taumarunui which follows ancient Ma-ori trade routes and pioneering tracks.

14. Hofmans Garden Adrian & Leonie Hofmans 170 Upper Stuart Rd, Eltham This large expansive country garden of contrasts has been a constantly developing labour of love for 25 years. It features numerous interesting elements ranging from contemporary twists to traditional aspects. This includes two wetland areas, a woodland garden, a large collection of rhododendrons and hostas, a formal rose garden, outdoor living areas and a land-art garden planted three years ago. waitara • bell block WAITARA Waitara’s most impressive feature is the mighty Waitara River which cuts a formidable path through the heart of this historical town. Located 15km northeast of New Plymouth and home to over 6,000 people, it is the largest town in North Taranaki. The banks of the Waitara River hosted a significant battle during the Taranaki Land Wars of the 1860s which involved over 2,000 men. In present times, Waitara is now known as the energy hub of the region with the giant Methanex plant sitting on its outskirts which produces export methanol.

BELL BLOCK Bell Block sits on the fringe of New Plymouth, situated just north of the city. Named after its purchaser, Francis Dillon Bell, who bought the 15,000 acre site off local Ma-ori in 1848, the 4,000 strong beachfront residential town is now also an industrial hub for the Taranaki region.

Tupare 487 Mangorei Rd, New Plymouth Taranaki Regional Council Tupare is an arts and crafts inspired property first established in 1932 by Sir Russell and Lady Matthews, which features a magical Chapman-Taylor designed house set amongst beautifully landscaped heritage gardens. It was established in 1951 and is now proudly owned and managed by Taranaki Regional Council. Landscape Design Project Radiant Garden Prepare to be blown away by this enchanting and ethereal creation from esteemed artist Tim Gruchy. Tim was commissioned to create a beautiful building projection artwork, especially to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our beloved Garden Festival. The result is a wondrous, whimsical and ever-changing digital garden wall, inspired by the lush landscapes of Taranaki. This delightful work will bring the façade of the TAFT office to life every evening throughout the festival, creating the perfect atmosphere in the heart of New Plymouth’s CBD. Drawing inspiration from the science of plant growth, Tim captures the exquisite allure of the gardens we all love. To create this fun, floral delight, he plays with mathematical artificial life algorithms, 3D mapping techniques and footage shot from his seven years living in Taranaki. Expect endless merriment, ambient soundscapes and a touching tribute to the gardens of Taranaki. DATE/TIME

LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROJECT LAUNCH Welsh born New Zealand based artist Tim Gruchy has spent more than 30 years in the exploration and composition of immersive and interactive multimedia through installation, music and performance while redefining it’s role, challenging the delineations between cultural sectors. He has exhibited multimedia works, photography, video, music and performance since the 1980s as well as his larger expressions in the public art arenas. His works are held in private, corporate and museum collections. His installations and performances feature in many international institutions, festivals and public spaces. Tim’s work has been exhibited in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, Holland, Belgium, UK, USA, Japan, France and Thailand. He is represented by Trish Clark Gallery in Auckland, where his most recent solo exhibition was Kade’s Cognition in Feb 2016 Tim has lectured and facilitated workshops in video art and interactive digital design at creative institutions around the world including Shanghai; Future University of Hakodate (Japan); National Institute of Dramatic Art (Sydney); University of Technology Sydney; Te Papa (New Zealand) and Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane). He has also been extensively involved in museum design and various projects at the intersection of architecture and multimedia. Supported by the TSB Community Trust, this project will be available for the whole family to enjoy during the course of the festival. From Tawa to Hawera

(and everything in between) Ginette’s comedic, performance and media career has spanned over 40 years, working in England, Scotland, Australia, Fiji, Singapore, Hong Kong and all over her beloved homeland New Zealand. She devised her alter ego, certifiable living treasure Lyn of Tawa in 1968. Ginette has also been an actress, writer, TV Producer, debater, broadcaster, facilitator, MC and Wellington City Council candidate. Ginette has won numerous awards for acting, producing and public speaking – and in 2007 she was awarded the ONZM for services to entertainment. For nearly five years, Ginette was the presenter of the TV3 gardening show Ground Force, despite not being a gardener herself and having the opposite of green thumbs. Additionally, Ginette cannot type, ride a horse, dance, play sports or sing in tune. All this adds up to a library of entertaining stories she’ll be sharing in an intimate tell-all evening, complete with pithy social commentary. Presented by the Floral Art Society of New Zealand – Taranaki Area

for Taranaki, who then represents the province at a national level.

Come and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Taranaki Area Floral Art Collective in conjunction with the Taranaki Floral Artist of the Year. This year’s floral entries are to incorporate a section of a 1950s car in their floral design. Novice, junior, intermediate and senior categories are in the exhibition.

Rachael says: Our members have been working for months to bring together the cars of our childhood and to incorporate them into our designs with flower and plant materials.

See for yourself, you will be surprised and amazed at the imaginative use of our local materials that we often take for granted. Also on display will be competition designs which have had a component of a car incorporated into the work. These designs range from full floor all around designs, to work suitable for a sideboard or table, plus a two dimensional collage.

Set in the stunning pavilion of Waiongana Gardens, here Diana Montgomery has built up and presented a stunning garden! Over the years Diana has cultivated a number of flowers and foliage suitable for the cutting garden.

Discover how native plants can be utilised and thrive in coastal and exposed properties. While coastal gardens are not without their challenges, many native plants once colonised New Zealand’s vast shores having evolved to cope with exposure to salt-laden winds, dry unstable soils and sand, thereby providing shelter and habitat for wildlife.

Join Pip and Diana for a garden walk through and forage for seasonal flowers and foliage to then use in your own arrangement. Pip will guide you through the picking process, flower preparation, and share tips on how to create the perfect seasonal arrangement, that you can then take home with you!

CREATING HANGING BASKETS A creative workshop with Jenny Oakley Jenny is a garden festival veteran. She’s one of the very few who have been entering their properties for the full 30 years of the festival. Jenny and Guy’s garden became a Garden of National Significance in 2005. Jenny has a Bachelor of Amenity Horticulture, is a Trustee of the New Zealand Gardens Trust and is also on the garden assessment team for the festival. She does regular speaking events around the region and has accomplished a good deal of commercial garden design and maintenance in her career. Jenny is also well known for her hanging baskets! She spent the English spring of 2000 touring English garden centres demonstrating how to make them. So if you are in Taranaki for the festival don’t miss one of her workshops. PUKEKURA PARK GUIDED WALKS Join the Pukekura Park staff on a guided walk through New Plymouth’s premier park. Learn about its history as you view the spectacular rhododendrons and visit the many dells. With your guide you will explore hidden corners of one of New Zealand’s most significant public gardens. A truly wonderful walk featuring many fascinating and interesting plants, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Please wear suitable walking shoes. A medium level of fitness is required. The event will proceed wet or fine.

TUPARE HOUSE TOURS The Friends of Tupare will conduct daily tours of the beautifully restored Chapman-Taylor designed home built by Sir Russell and Lady Matthews. Art Not to Miss TUPARE GARDENS Echoes of Autumn Tara Jahn-Werner Echoes of Autumn is the third exhibition of photographs by Tara Jahn-Werner highlighting Tupare through the seasons. Many trees in the garden put on a display of vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. Indeed, every few steps you’ll stumble upon a captivating vista, inevitably framed by turning leaves which fall to create enclaves of swirling colour. Using a small Leica digital camera Tara has photographed the striking foliage against the stark black of a stream bed to emphasise their magnificent range of hues. She has contrasted this approach with another aimed to capture the beauty of autumn leaves in a different way. “My idea was to highlight leaves by shooting them directly into the sun, to emphasize their lines and the depth of colour,” she says. “The results illustrate their patterns in great detail, and each leaf seems to reveal a lovely array of orange-red tints, sometimes lined with gold.” OPENING

KINA NZ DESIGN + ART SPACE Conversations In The Park Alana Clarke and Vicky Lord Conversations In The Park, an exhibition of paintings by local artists Alana Clarke and Vicky Lord opens at Kina, October 27th. Inspired by weekly visits to walk, talk and draw what they saw, this show is a celebration of our local treasure - Pukekura Park. Both artists have captured the changing seasons and landscapes of the park in two unique series of abstract botanical paintings which celebrate the natural world around us. VILLA BUMBLEBEE MERRILANDS, NEW PLYMOUTH Local sustainability entrepreneur and driver of community initiatives, Franziska, has maximised the growing space on her 550 m2 urban section. Using vertical spaces, a greenhouse and layered plantings, she aims to grow as much high quality organic food as possible to feed her family – and to share with the community via CropSwap events. She has also started a berm garden from which passers-by can help themselves. You’ll see 32 fruit trees, berry bushes, productive ground covers and climbers, grid tied solar, bottled fruits and vegetables, dry herbs, homemade bread and beeswax candles. You might even luck upon a piece of hot pizza from the pizza oven on your visit!

PURPOSEFUL PADDOCKS URENUI Three years ago Hazel and Derek bought 10 acres of bare hillside paddock near Urenui. Aided by a GreenBridge design, they sectioned off smaller fields for their horses, pigs, chooks and ducks, and planted 2500+ new trees to create shelter belts and to rehabilitate the riparian zone around the lake. The beautifully simple solar passive house is supported by infrastructure such as integrated grey/blackwater systems, a glass house and a tunnel house, and is surrounded by a young food forest. Bring your shopping bag if you’d like to buy some of Hazel and Derek’s surplus produce from their farm-gate stall.
