Since then, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre has opened next door and the Clock Tower has been demolished and rebuilt. The spot is also walking distance from the CBD, the Coastal Walkway and an abundance of cafés and restaurants.

The New Zealand Gardens Trust, an initiative of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, provides an independent assessment of New Zealand gardens.

ONAERO Onaero is a settlement in northern Taranaki, located on State Highway 3 close to the shore of the North Taranaki Bight.

WAITARA An impressive natural feature of the largest town in North Taranaki is the Waitara River, which flows through the town’s heart. Waitara was one of the first areas in the region to be settled by Māori; consequently, it has some important heritage sites. The banks of the river were the scene of a significant battle during the Taranaki Land Wars of the 1860s that involved over 2000 people.

BELL BLOCK This rapidly growing beachfront residential town was named after Francis Dillon Bell, the New Zealand Company’s resident agent in Taranaki from 1847–48. In the 1970s, extensive subdivisions expanded the town so that it effectively became part of New Plymouth.

MUST-DO EXPERIENCES INCLUDE: • Walk over the Bertrand Rd suspension bridge that crosses the Waitara River, linking Huirangi, near Lepperton and Tikorangi. The original bridge was built in 1897 and rebuilt in 1927 after flood damage.

• Enjoy a game of mini-putt based on the layout of the famous Mount Panorama track at Bathurst and view an impressive collection of Holden cars and memorabilia at the Hillsborough Holden Museum near Bell Block.

1. Tikorangi, The Jury Garden 589 Otaraoa Rd, Tikorangi RD43, Waitara, 4383 Abbie & Mark Jury When the Jurys re-opened last year, the extensive new summer gardens had their first showing. This year, the new project is the Wild North Garden—a 1.6ha extension that has been 30 years in the making. Just as the original park is now a managed meadow, the North Garden is an actively managed wild garden created with beauty and sustainability in mind.

The 4ha garden has trees dating back to 1870, with extensive stonework from the 1950s. As the fourth generation, Mark and Abbie have continued to extend and refine the garden, retaining historic elements while incorporating ideas from the new millennium. Open for the 10 days of festival only. No plant sales. Parking on site for small or mid-sized coaches only by prior arrangement. Free guided tours are available Tues 2 Nov, Thurs 4 Nov, at 11am.

2. Waiongana Gardens 74 Kairau Rd West, Waitara, 4373 John Wilmshurst & Diana Montgomery This 4ha garden bound by the Waiongana River has many varied spaces, includes a Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Redwoods, Native River Walk, log walls and a developing produce area to name but a few. The mostly flat terrain has enabled a large variety of easy walking avenues and vista viewpoints. This garden is well known for the herbaceous peonies that usually flower during the festival.

Scrumptious savouries, cakes, tea, coffee and cold drinks from The Cake Diary will be on sale in the Pavilion. The garden was featured in NZ House & Garden magazine.

3. Winlea Acre 2 Joll St, Waitara, 4383 Ann & Maurice Crackett An immaculate award-winning open-style garden that boasts a huge lawn with plantings on either side. The amazing variety of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, fruits and vegetables, skilfully planted in this garden provide a wonderful example of what can be achieved in short spaces of time with vision and expertise. The garden itself is entirely flat, and curved beds planted with heuchera and hostas border the immaculate and vast lawn. Other attractions to the garden include the addition of a house conservatory filled with orchids and sub-tropical plants, and a pergola draped with climbers where you can sit and take in the entire garden bursting with life. 4. Marcella Point 280 Mountain Rd, Lepperton, 4373 Cheryl & Geoff Burt Surrounding the house are large park-like gardens terraced on the sloping hillside with well-established flora. Cheryl and Geoff have redefined pathways and repurposed materials for low maintenance gardening and hints of quirkiness. Crafts for sale. Collab Catering 10am– 2:30pm serving lunches. 5. Magnolia Grove 6 Mahoetahi Rd, Waitara, 4382 Vance & Kathryn Hooper Behind the casual entrance is a hidden mature garden that will wow you. A Mediterranean theme of succulents and cacti make a bold statement. Paths flow out naturally to unfold a myriad of magnolia species, the bamboo forest, and a bee garden; just a few of the combinations creating this idyllic sanctuary maturing to a forest setting as part of the original plan. A must see for rare and unusual plants and trees with a wide range of plants available.

6. Lepper Garden 486 Manutahi Rd, Lepperton, 4373 Robyn & Graeme Lepper Now in its sixth generation, this family homestead and 100-year-old garden is filled with treasures.

Large mature English trees and native bush boundaries surround this one-hectare garden. Clivia, hostas, ligularia, roses and rhododendrons are some of the varieties in this rural country garden.

There are also spacious lawns, curved beds, garden rooms and a large variety of bright flowers. Off road parking, complimentary tea/coffee.

7. Frog Lodge

39 Bishop Road, New Plymouth, 4372 David & Noeline Sampson After selling their nursery Cedar Lodge 10 years ago, these plantspeople have transformed 7ha of rural farmland into Frog Lodge. David and Noeline’s passion for conifers feature throughout this “tree garden”. A long driveway and a substantial-sized lake offer a great opportunity to see how tree varieties thrive in these conditions. A newly developed area features a restored Railway Station nestled amongst the young trees and a hillside planting of young natives. Visitors will also see two forms of weeping blue Atlantic Cedars, four cultivars of yellow New Zealand native trees, and new forms of miniature conifers.

8. Riverlea (Ann & Vince’s Garden) 367 Corbett Road, Bell Block, 4373 Ann & Vince Naus This peaceful, large, and diverse garden flows around a relocated and restored 120-year-old villa. Since 2003, Ann and Vince, owners of Big Jim’s Garden Centre, have poured their talents and passion into creating Riverlea. To form varied vistas, they have engaged an array of ideas, including establishing a perennial border, woodland garden and maple walk. Also, a boardwalk to the river starring native plants, opens to a new area with rimu, kauri, nikau and more. Buses by arrangement.

Te Kāinga Marire New Zealand Native Garden Paradise 15 Spencer Pl, New Plymouth, 4312 Valda Poletti & David Clarkson Te Kāinga Marire is the only private native garden sanctuary in New Zealand to be rated as a Garden of International Significance. Te Kāinga Marire’s (translated ‘peaceful encampment’) point of difference lies in the natural plant associations that evoke a feeling of the real New Zealand. This native plant paradise was developed in 1972 from clay wasteland. Keen outdoor adventurers, the owners wanted a bird-friendly garden designed around the ecological groups they had observed in the wild. New Zealand native grasses, climbers, herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees have been carefully nurtured around rustic fences, a wetland, a colonial bush hut and cool fern-filled whare. Shy tui now regularly fly into the garden to feed.

This garden features in the BBC series Around the World in 80 Gardens, which first screened in 2008.

10. Sequoia Steps 21A Sequoia Gr, New Plymouth, 4312 Shane & Mel Hurliman A tranquil inner-city hideaway orientated to comfortable outdoor living. Shane has built structures that make the most of the available space, while Mel has added the softer touches with her love of maples and hostas. The garden lights up at night and there will be live music most evenings. There are areas to shelter from the wind and rain. Garden art will be for sale, including water features. 11. Pukemara 5 Tyne Pl, New Plymouth, 4312 Alan Morris Alan has created a town garden of two parts— a flat courtyard and a hillside garden. The courtyard garden around the house features sub-tropical vireyas rhododendrons combined with fuchsias, roses and perennials. The hillside garden at the rear has surprises around every corner of the zigzag path, especially colourful rhododendrons, fiery azaleas, mature trees, viburnums and hydrangeas. Pukemara is also a haven for hostas. You’ll find a large selection of these lush leafy plants on show and for sale along with other plant varieties.

15. Tūpare

487 Mangorei Road, New Plymouth, 4312 Taranaki Regional Council Tūpare is an Arts and Crafts-inspired property established in 1932 by the Matthews family. Sculpted into a hillside above the Waiwhakaiho River, it features a Chapman-Taylor house set in the grounds with secluded garden rooms, elegant borders and majestic trees.

Tūpare has free guided walks during the festival at 2pm daily and free house tours half-hourly from 9.30am– 12.30pm. The mobility vehicle, available for less-able guests, runs before and after each house tour only.

Please let us know beforehand if you are bringing large groups during this busy time.

Guided walks and house tours can be booked privately outside of the festival on the website for a fee.

What’s happening • Taranaki Symphony Orchestra and Ensembles perform on the tennis court. Tea and home baking available to purchase.

10 Fillis St, New Plymouth (several entry points) NPDC Staff Located in the heart of New Plymouth, Pukekura Park is a Garden of National Significance, has a five-star rating from the New Zealand Gardens Trust and has held the international green Flag award for six years running. Created in 1876, the 52ha park has an amazing range of native and exotic plants displayed in a natural setting.

The Fernery and Display Houses have been a mustsee for almost a century. Linked by tunnels, the three glass-topped caverns dug into a hillside and the tropical house display a wide variety of native and exotic plants.

The Fernery and Display Houses are open 8.30am-5pm.

The 360ha property also boasts an absorbing range of free family-orientated activities, walking tracks for all fitness levels, a modern visitor centre, the popular Rainforest Eatery and various accommodation options including the Lodge Studio and the Piwakawaka Family Hut which can be booked on the website.

Pukeiti has free guided walking tours during the festival at 2pm daily as well as mobility vehicle rides for less-able visitors on the hour from 10am–1pm. Please let us know beforehand if you are bringing large groups during this busy time.

Cnr Upper High St and Waihi Rd, Hāwera South Taranaki District Council King Edward Park is rated by the New Zealand Gardens Trust as a nationally significant garden. The ancestry of the park est. 1902 is seen in its charmingly formal design. The lofty close clipped hedges give shelter to abundant azalea and rhododendron collections. This garden has rose beds of both heritage and modern varieties, historic aged trees and a century old model boating pond. The bronze statue of Wendy, is the companion piece to the Peter Pan in London’s Kensington gardens.

The 150-year-old cannon has been a favourite toy for children, along with a pirate ship and fort. Seek out some of the hidden features along pathways or bring a picnic to seated areas.

Eltham Eltham’s main street is lined with Victorian buildings that are home to many charming antique and curiosity shops. The town has a fascinating history, being where the New Zealand dairy industry took off globally. A trip through the town would not be complete without stopping at the Eltham Cheese Bar to sample some of the speciality cheese and dairy products.

Stratford Stratford, situated in the heart of Taranaki, is the home to the only Glockenspiel clock tower in New Zealand. Every day at 10am, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm, the Glockenspiel chimes and performs a short re-enactment of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in commemoration to the town being named after the birthplace of the great bard William Shakespeare.

Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch or bottle of wine and enjoy the surrounds. The original bank building guards “La Vie en Rose” from the street. This refurbished bank manager’s residence has featured in NZ House & Garden and other magazines, and it is home to Mark and Barbara. The Bank features an eclectic design store and exhibition space for Mark’s photography and paintings and will be open during the garden festival.

39. Greenhills 37 Cassandra St, Stratford, 4332, Shirley Greenhill This floral artist’s creation cleverly incorporates a mixed perennial garden, shrubbery and a rockery with a bounty of treasures. About 30 climbing clematises drip from garden structures, mass-planted rhodohypoxis flowers flow like rivers, and bell-shaped fritillarias, in many hues, are scattered around the small shapely garden of great intrigue. It features many rhododendrons, unusual plants and offers delightful contrasts.

Hollard Gardens has free guided walking tours during the festival at 2pm daily. Guided walks can be booked privately outside of the festival on the website for a fee.

Introduction to Botanical Drawing with Dr Tabatha Forbes Drawing directly from the lush native and exotic foliage at Puketarata Garden, this workshop will offer festival visitors an introduction to the timeless beauty of botanical art.

Tabatha holds a Doctorate in Fine Arts and has been teaching botanical art for nearly two decades. Her art practice includes painting, photography, installation and writing. Currently living in Ōaonui, South Taranaki, Tabatha runs Forbes & Flay studio gallery in Ōpunake showcasing her and her sculptor husband’s work as well as hosting botanical and nature journaling workshops on site.

The workshop fee includes all materials needed in class, morning and afternoon tea, and will coincide with a special guided walk/talk through the historic landscape of Puketarata hosted by Ken Horner.

You will also be able see epiphytes in-situ, growing harmoniously on and alongside the couple’s collection of cold-hardy varieties of palms and sub-tropicals.

Their passion keeps growing and, over the past three years, they have transformed their property from a tangled overgrown woodland into Tropical Treasures nursery. “A lot of people thought we were mad when we first moved… sub-tropicals won’t grow here we were told, well come and see for yourself!”

A Walk Through the PĀst

with Jules Mathews Tired of those annual battles with weeds, thrips, aphids or diseases? Or perhaps you are concerned about the amount of chemicals you use in the garden? Do you find yourself repeating the same treatments year after year?

Join Jules Matthews from Integrity Soils in a walk around the dynamic gardens of June Lees as she discusses how to assess soil and plant health from an ecological perspective. Find out how a healthy soil microbiome can restore and ensure vibrant pest and disease-free gardening. From rhododendrons to the vegetable garden, it all starts with the soil.

Puketarata Garden lies inside an outer rampart of the historic Puketarata pā site, one of a number in the valley region. Around the 15th or 16th centuries, the age of pā building began, and for four or five hundred years Puketarata was home to Māori who lived and gardened at the pā site or its adjacent kāinga (village) Keteonetea.

Historic events had a destructive effect on Taranaki and on Puketerata/Keteonetea. In the 1820s the musket wars began, followed by the subsequent arrival of Pākehā in increasing numbers from 1840. By the 1860s the land wars had commenced. The area was confiscated in 1865 by the government along with other Māori land in the area.

Although there is very little specific history known of this time, Ken Horner, amateur historian and owner of Puketarata Garden, has pieced together some of the history of the land that has been his family home since 1983. Take a part in a walk along the earthen structure that is the remains of the historic pā site and join in the conversation with Ken about Puketarata’s place in history.

A Gentler Way to Garden with Abbie Jury The Jurys have been exploring strategies to ensure their garden is not only beautiful but also sustainable in the longer term and biologically friendly. They rotate their cattle, ewes, chickens and ducks through paddocks and soon-to-be food forest, in a regenerative way. This whenua was once a busy fishing village with extensive kūmara gardens. Today they continue to grow kai to support their growing whānau and different kaupapa throughout the year. The maara extends onto the reef and awa, and the use of seaweed and harakeke is a main feature.

ABOUT Many people from Taranaki take off for education or jobs or OE - artists among them. Some return to settle here and resume their art, but they have ‘been away’ and it shows. Artistic newcomers arrive and stir the mix. As a result the ways and means and colours of the big wide world have long influenced the portrayal of local things. On this Trail you can find fascinating photography and objects imaginatively rendered in glass or stone or wood, clay, fibre, metal etc as well as many types of painting. In effect the Trail is run as though it were one big diffuse exhibition for the community, but more importantly, it is to have our artists talk to a lot of interested people.

Admission is free and the studios are open from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Friday to Sunday the 29th to 31st of October and 5th to 7th November 2021.

In collaboration with the Taranaki Garden Festival dates many artists will have their studios open for the full 10 days as indicated by the ‘Open all festival week’ icon.

WELCOME Welcome to Taranaki for our eighth Trail. Our committee is grateful for the vital support of sponsors, patrons and local businesses as well as artists who help with media referrals, signs and brochure distribution.

Eighty four artists and just six days to see them might seem a bit daunting. Our website www.taranakiartstrail.co.nz displays images and information about every artist and is sorted by category and location. We realise that visitors get rushed and studios get crowded, but fortunately many artists open their studios to visitors by appointment outside the Trail dates and this brochure is a sturdy publication which is intended to last the year between Trails. Our experienced coordinator Niki is available for advice at taranakiartstrail@gmail.com.

We have 25 new artists and a refreshingly broad range of work using all manner of methods and materials. Some artists are well-known and some new and anxious, but every one of them is excited to open their studio. Visitors will see some finished work and if they choose, can ask about the artistic process, materials, aims, philosophy etc. Hopefully you will enjoy this marvellous chance to get inside a whole lot of little art factories.
