Kia ora and welcome to the 2019 Taranaki Garden Festival It never ceases to amaze me the unwavering passion that flourishes among all of our proud gardeners. They really do work year round to prepare their properties for our visitors. So on behalf of them, I welcome you to the 32nd Taranaki Garden Festival for 2019. From around the maunga, Taranaki will be serving up an assortment of gardens for you to feast your eyes on. We’ve kept the ‘Vegetable’ category on the plate and brought back the popular ‘Art in Gardens’ for you to savour. Our events programme is as stimulating as ever with the return of favourites with twists of added excitement. Twilight in Te Henui, Forgotten 43 Brewing Tour & Tasting and the Luncheon en Blanc with award-winning flower show judge Kate Hillier. There’s also a chance to dance and dress in the allure, romance and frivolity of the garden gala themed event Mitre 10 - Flora and Fauna. Make sure you book your tickets early so you don’t miss out. Key
You can pre-purchase tickets at official ticket outlets (see page 64) or at any of our festival gardens. You can purchase as many tickets as you need and there is no booking fee! We encourage you to pre-purchase tickets so that our gardeners are free to walk and talk. Each garden has nominated their charge of $5, $10 or $15. Tickets are sold in $5 denominations. Garden assessments All festival gardens get assessed. Every garden goes through this process on a three yearly cycle. New Zealand Gardens Trust The New Zealand Gardens Trust, an initiative of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, provides an independent assessment of New Zealand gardens.
You will note that some gardens in our festival have chosen to be assessed by the Trust as well as undergoing the festival’s own assessment process. These gardens can be identified by the placement of the NZGT logo reflecting either a Garden of Significance, National or International Significance.

WAITARA Waitara, 15km northeast of New Plymouth, has a deep history and a powerful present. The most impressive feature of the town is the Waitara River, which flows through its heart. The banks of the river were the scene of a significant battle during the Taranaki Land Wars of the 1860s and involved over 2000 people. These days, Waitara, population 6000, is known as the energy hub of the region with the giant Methanex plant sitting on its outskirts. It produces export methanol. BELL BLOCK Bell Block sits on the outskirts of New Plymouth, just north of the city. Named after its purchaser, Francis Dillon Bell, the 4000-strong beachfront residential town is also an industrial hub for the Taranaki region.

1. Waiongana Gardens 74 Kairau Rd West, Waitara, 4373 John Wilmshurst & Diana Montgomery This 4-hectare garden bound by the Waiongana River has many varied spaces, a sunken garden, rose garden, redwoods, native river walk, log walls and a developing produce area to name but a few. The mostly flat terrain has enabled a large variety of easy walking avenues and vista viewpoints. This garden is well known for the herbaceous peonies that usually flower during the festival. Scrumptious savouries, cakes, tea, coffee and cold drinks from The Cake Diary will be on sale in the Pavilion. This garden was featured in the June 2017 House & Garden magazine. 2. Magnolia Grove 6 Mahoetahi Rd, Waitara, 4382 Vance & Kathryn Hooper Magnolia Grove is a tranquil picturesque garden that has been developed over 14 years by Vance and Kathryn Hooper. There is a vast myriad of magnolia species, a magnolia maze and bee garden, which add to the range of plantings. The Mediterranean theme of succulents and cacti set the backdrop to the house reflecting over 40 years of plant collecting. Paths flow with the natural contours as you explore. A must see for rare and unusual plants on sale.

3. Pukemiro 1121 Main Nth Rd, Onaero Rosanna Paterson & Evan Ryder This 4.5-hectare farm and retreat is teeming with a variety of vegetables and fruit trees. This largely self-sustainable property, named after the ancient pā site on its boundary, utilises crop rotation, seed preservation, companion planting and mulching. You can see lambs, baby calves, an earth room to store the garden’s generous bounty, and hear about Rosanna’s preserves and pickles. If you’re lucky, she may perform an impromptu acapella. 4. Winlea Acre 2 Joll St, Waitara, 4383 Maurice & Ann Crackett An immaculate award-winning open-style garden that boasts a huge lawn with plantings on either side. The amazing variety of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, fruits and vegetables, skilfully planted in this garden provide a wonderful example of what can be achieved in short spaces of time with vision and expertise. The garden itself is entirely flat, curved beds planted with hellebores, a leucadendron, and hydrangeas border the immaculate and vast lawn. Te Kainga Marire New Zealand Native Garden Paradise 15 Spencer Place, New Plymouth, 4312 Valda Poletti & David Clarkson Te Kainga Marire is the only private native garden sanctuary in New Zealand to be rated as a Garden of International Significance. Te Kainga Marire’s (translated ‘peaceful encampment’) point of difference lies in the natural plant associations that evoke a feeling of the real New Zealand. This native plant paradise was developed in 1972 from clay wasteland. Keen outdoor adventurers, the owners wanted a bird-friendly garden designed around the ecological groups they had observed in the wild. New Zealand native grasses, climbers, herbaceous plants, shrubs and trees have been carefully nurtured around rustic fences, a pond, a colonial bush hut and cool fern-filled whare. 7. Sequoia Steps 21A Sequoia Grove, New Plymouth, 4312 Shane & Mel Hurliman A tranquil inner city hideaway orientated to comfortable outdoor living. Shane has built structures that make the most of the available space, while Mel has added the softer touches with her love of maples, hostas and pastel flowers. The New Plymouth haven is filled with special plants from around the world, including rhododendrons. Lynn, who has a botany background, believes good gardens have a spiritual dimension, and that’s what you’ll find here. A garden of many levels, the lush lawn is surrounded by beds filled with interesting plantings, including some rare offerings. Like Pukeiti, a place dear to Lynn’s heart, this garden is backed by native bush that merges with Te Henui Walkway. Please take extra care around the bank as some paths are steep. 9. Tainui Close 13A Tainui St, New Plymouth, 4312 Chris Paul & Kevin Wensor Described by the owners as a landscape designer’s inner city hideaway; it is less than seven years since work developing this steep sloping hillside began. Planting and structures around the small flat section lead to steps from top to bottom. A strong landscape layout features Chris’s favourite plants to demonstrate the use of rooms on different levels. This is one final chance to visit Tainui Close and talk with Chris is his own garden. 11. Pukekura Park & The Fernery and Display Houses
Fillis St, New Plymouth Located in the heart of New Plymouth, Pukekura is a Garden of National Significance and has held the international Green Flag award for six years running. Created in 1876, the park now spans 52 hectares. It has an amazing range of native and exotic plants displayed in a natural setting, as well as wonderful views of the lakes and Mt Taranaki. The Fernery and Display Houses have been a must-see for almost a century. The three glass-topped caverns dug into a hillside and linked by tunnels, along with a tropical house, display a wide variety of native and exotic plants. The Fernery is open 8:30am-5pm. 12. Ngā Manu Garden 40 Manu Cres, New Plymouth, 4310 Chris & Angela Feron Ngā Manu (Bird Garden) is a new garden in development. There is a male giant ginkgo tree, a variety of camellia trees, hydrangeas and rhododendrons, much to the delight of the resident native birdlife which inspired the gardens name. Corokia hedging and columnar golden beech trees create a sleek entrance into the Michael Mansvelt designed urban garden, while roses, cycad palms, star jasmine and Japanese silver grass have been designed to complement the modern European office pod which the garden surrounds.

13. Pukemara 5 Tyne Place, New Plymouth Alan Morris Rhododendron enthusiast Alan has created a town garden of three parts – a flat courtyard, flourishing veggie patch and a hillside woodland. The courtyard garden around the house features sub-tropical vireya rhododendrons combined with fuchsias, roses and perennials. The hillside garden at the rear has surprises around every corner of the zigzag path, especially colourful rhododendrons, fiery azaleas, mature trees, viburnums and hydrangeas. Another showcase is Alan’s healthy vegetable garden. Pukemara is also a haven for hostas, with a large selection of these lush leafy plants on show and for sale along with other plant varieties. Pukemara featured in New Zealand Gardener in 2019.

Sculpted into a hillside above the Waiwhakaiho River, it features a Chapman-Taylor house set in grounds with secluded garden rooms, elegant borders and majestic trees. OPUNAKE Halfway along the 105km stretch of road known as Surf Highway 45, you’ll discover great cafes, antique stores, vibrant murals and a bronze statue celebrating the running efforts of hometown hero and Olympic champion Peter Snell. Opunake is a favoured seaside destination that features world- renowned surf breaks, mountain to sea views and plenty of opportunity for sand-strolling. MANAIA Home to Yarrow’s, one of the largest bakeries in the country (established in 1912), Manaia has been nicknamed the “bread capital”. Yarrows Family Bakers supply bread and bread products to restaurants, hotels and retailers all over the world. The village gets its real name from the former Māori chief of the district, Hukunui Manaia. A model loaf of bread welcomes people into the town, where they can stop by the bakery, admire the historic band stand or just be delighted by the friendly charm of the village centre. HAWERA The main hub of South Taranaki is a bustling town known for its eateries and iconic water tower. The latter was built in 1914 to assist firefighting in the town, which was hit by devastating blazes in 1884, 1888, and 1912. Aptly, the Māori name of Hawera means “the burnt place” or “breath of fire”. It is also known as the home of writer Ronald Hugh Morrieson and an important service town for the dairy industry. Whareroa, the world’s largest dairy factory complex, is built just out of town. 32

The lush sanctuary of nikau palms, colourful perennials, camellias, and native grasses give way to spectacular views of Mt Taranaki. Expansive lawns and established garden beds are set amongst sheltering maples, a weeping elm, and a towering walnut tree. Cherry trees, portuguese laurels and roses flourish. The Edwardian ancestry of the park can be seen in its charmingly formal design. Grassy avenues and close clipped hedges provide the structure of the park, which is home to exuberant floral borders and rose gardens, quaint historic structures and aged trees. Ducks and occasional model yachts can be seen reflected in the century old boating pond and the park is home to a bronze statue of Wendy, the companion piece to the Peter Pan in London’s Kensington garden. The Environmental Garden 408A South Rd, Hawera, 4674 Peter & Norine Muller An exciting new garden to visit, The Environmental Garden has one of the most established riparian planting schemes in South Taranaki. This wetland garden was once a stock water dam; over time the area has been fenced off and planted out with a variety of native and exotic trees to increase the habitat for wildlife. A peaceful bush setting, the garden is home to fantails, tui, kereru, kingfishers, occasional sightings of quail and rosella, as well as many other wildlife. Enjoy strolling the walkways and listening to the birdsong of this QEII National Trust reserve.

ELTHAM Eltham is a town of many firsts. The first pound of butter was made there, it had New Zealand’s first tarred macadam street, and was the country’s first place to manufacture rennet, important for cheese making. It even has a water reservoir painted like a round of cheese. The pretty Victorian buildings that line the main street are home to many charming antique and curiosity shops. STRATFORD Stratford is a tribute to the great bard William Shakespeare and is named after his birthplace in Warwickshire. The town features 67 streets named after characters from an assortment of Shakespeare’s plays. Stratford, population 9000, is also home to the only Glockenspiel clock tower in New Zealand and is the starting point of the Forgotten World Highway to Taumarunui. INGLEWOOD As well as laying claim to eight buildings classified by the New Zealand Historical Places Trust, it is also home to the oldest remaining railway station on its original site in New Zealand.

Twilight in Te Henui Set just inside the gates of Te Henui Cemetery, amongst the picturesque historical grounds is Te Henui Chapel. With 360 degree windows this state-of-the-art venue will host this year’s gin in the garden outing. Last year this event sold out in rapid timing. with Ken Horner Puketarata Garden lies inside an outer rampart of the historic Puketarata pā site, one of a number in the valley region. Around the 15th or 16th centuries, the age of pā building began, and for four or five hundred years Puketarata was home to Māori who lived and gardened at the pā site or its adjacent kainga (village) Keteonetea. Historic events had a destructive effect on Taranaki and on Puketarata/Keteonetea. In the 1820s the musket wars began followed by the subsequent arrival of Pakeha in increasing numbers from 1840 and, by the 1860s, the land wars had commenced. The area was officially confiscated in 1865 by the government along with other Māori land in the area. Although there is very little specific history known of this time, Ken Horner, amateur historian and owner of Puketarata Garden, has pieced together the history of the land that has been his family’s home since 1983. Take part in a walk along the earthen structure that is all that remains of the historic pā site and join in the conversation with Ken about Puketarata’s place in history. Urban Permaculture Walk with Dee Turner Take a walk around an urban permaculture garden and food forest with gardener and teacher Dee Turner. See how soil is built by layering carbon and nitrogen layers from waste materials from the home and garden. Look at how you can combine fruit trees, fruiting crops, perennials, root crops, bulbs and climbers into an enhanced foodscape that feeds itself. Dee has done away with the conventional orchard and mowing, and instead grows plant guilds around her fruit trees to feed them, keep away the bugs, and obtain a yield all at the same time. Herb and edible groundcovers grow where grass once was, and annuals self-seed every season along with alpine strawberries. There’s always food to harvest all year round with minimal weeding and pruning – a great solution for a busy lifestyle. Market Farm Tour with Jodi Roebuck & Tanya Mercer Jodi Roebuck, owner of Roebuck Farm, is a renowned biointensive gardening educator and restoration grazing consultant. This year Jodi will celebrate his 20th year growing and selecting heritage vegetable seed and the expansion of his thriving sustainable market garden and restoration grazing property at Omata. Join Jodi for a tour around the award-winning Roebuck Farm. See first-hand the production of fast-growing salad greens, including microgreens, and how they are harvested using small innovative tools and produce is cleaned in a purpose-built wash room. Jodi drew inspiration from a couple of “rock star” market gardeners from Canada, whose principles are extremely close to his own. Curtis Stone from Kelowna and Jean-Martin Fortier from Quebec, grow intensively and sustainably in permanent beds, on a small scale, which produce nutrient-dense food. Alongside the plants, the land is home to 50 Texel / Cheviot sheep, used to thicken and improve the pastures through timed grazing. Plant Propagation Tips and Tricks with Jenny Oakley Festival veteran Jenny Oakley is one of the few gardeners who have entered gardens into the festival for the full 32 years. In 2005, Oakley Garden became a Garden of National Significance. Jenny has a Bachelor of Amenity Horticulture, and has accomplished a good deal of commercial garden design and maintenance in her career. A Trustee of the New Zealand Gardens Trust and also on the garden assessment team for the festival, Jenny does regular speaking events around the region sharing her knowledge and love of gardening. Join Jenny in her garden for a talk on propagating plants. Take some time to pick up great tips on how to take cuttings from perennials and roses, watch Jenny demonstrate how to divide plants for an easy and inexpensive way to get new plants from the ones you already have.

Exhibition Balancing Act is a group exhibition at Kina Gallery that features the work of Melissa Young, Sarah Wilkins & Camille Walton. Melissa Young’s exquisite small bronze sculptures will be accompanied by an exhibition of illustrations by globally known illustrator Sarah Wilkins and Wellington artist Camille Walton. Balancing Act refers to the balance faced by many female artists juggling their art practice with life – be it family or other occupations.
