We are delighted to present RESET 2020, A Festival for Aotearoa.

Towards the end of William Shakespeare’s career, in the early years of the seventeenth century, all theatres in England went into lockdown to control an outbreak of the plague. Bad news certainly if you were an actor or theatre-goer, but when the playhouses finally reopened, it seems Shakespeare emerged from isolation having written two of his greatest works, King Lear and Macbeth. Fast-forward to 2020 and while the rest of the world’s arts industry remains in pandemic-induced lockdown, here in New Zealand our own artists are coming back. We are thrilled to throw open doors to our theatres and galleries again to give our audiences one of the first festival opportunities anywhere in the world. Artists from Taranaki’s creative community and across New Zealand have returned to help us re-set 2020!

This festival is a celebration of our New Zealand and Taranaki artists in all their diversity. The programme is a smorgasbord of shows from light-hearted to inspiring and entertaining, audiences can expect cabaret, comedy, music, and theatre over the two weeks. We encourage you to experience as many of these performances as you can. Book your tickets early, now is the time to fill your cup with creativity and culture! Prepare to be reset and energised from this impressive all-New Zealand line-up, and all the additional events that make up this unique festival programme. The Taranaki Arts Festival has a long-recognised history, and this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. by Trick of The Light Theatre It’s 1998. Otto is twelve but he says he’s thirteen and he’s pretty sure he gets away with it. He lives in an old wooden two-storey house with his mum, dad, and sister, a chain-smoking granny, and an ancient malevolent troll that’s living in the wall. From Trick of the Light Theatre comes a lo-fi wi-fi fable. It combines storytelling, music and puppetry, in an uncanny tale from the twitchy edges of the digital age. As smartphones become light sources, laptops transform into skyscrapers, and charger cords morph into puppets, it tells a story both mythic and modern in the vein of Stranger Things.

Farm Music The sounds of rural Taranaki will be brought to life playfully and surprisingly by a collaboration of participants in Farm Music.

Supported by

Renowned drummer, composer and educator Chris O’Connor pairs with sound installation artist Dr Bridget Johnson in partnership with the Taranaki Retreat and the Rural Support Trust to bring together a unique community arts collaboration focused on creativity, mental health and wellbeing support for participants.

Farm Music will bring men together over six weeks to explore innovative ways to play with sound and to create their improvised compositions and sound sculptures in a rural environment, from items found in their backyard, shed, paddock or garage. The men will work with O’Connor (who has performed with musicians as diverse as Don McGlashan, Trinity Roots, Neil Finn, Nadia Reid, Leila Adu, Jeff Henderson and the Auckland Chamber Orchestra) and Johnson, Senior Lecturer at the Massey School of Music and Creative Media Production in Wellington. Come to the festival to see this innovative installation work showcased, meet the participants and creative team and hear the sounds of rural Taranaki in a brand-new way.

Albi & The Wolves Albi & The Wolves set fire to stages and fill hearts with hope with their energetic and relatable alternative indie folk songs. Chris Dent, the proud albino frontman Albi, Pascal Roggen and Micheal Young have crafted a stage show that’s brimming with energy and moments to pause for reflection. The trio has a huge sound that is simply created by an acoustic guitar, electric violin, double bass and their three voices. Gitbox Rebellion Gitbox Rebellion is an innovative, experienced multi-piece guitar ensemble performing original compositions and a few well-loved guitar hero covers. Unashamedly analog, the music spans and defies the genres of jazz, rock, folk and chamber music. The new Gitbox line-up features four original members: Nigel Gavin, Kim Halliday, Russell Hughes and Bodi Hermans. They have been joined by new members Tomislav Skulic, Sam Loveridge, Sonia Wilson, Rob Mita, and Doug Robertson. The reformed Gitbox Rebellion came together at the beginning of 2017 after countless requests from people who had attended live performances and listened to the ensemble’s two albums.

Portrait of Pixie Williams A unique festival performance showcasing the songbook of New Zealand’s first recording pop star and the music that influenced her. In 1949, Pixie Williams gave voice to one of the most enduring popular melodies of the twentieth century – Blue Smoke. A triple platinum hit that made Pixie a household name overnight, Blue Smoke was just the beginning. Pixie went on to record a further 12 songs, including another single platinum hit, mixing universal themes and international music styles with the unmistakable flavour of Aotearoa New Zealand. Schools Programme

Schools Programme With the support of the TSB Community Trust and Methanex, RESET 2020 offers students throughout Taranaki the opportunity to experience two Festival shows: Tröll and Super Hugh-Man. Tröll is a lo-fi wi-fi fable from Trick of the Light Theatre. It combines storytelling, music and puppetry, in an uncanny tale from the twitchy edges of the digital age. As smartphones become light sources, laptops transform into skyscrapers, and charger cords morph into puppets, it tells a story both mythic and modern in the vein of stranger things.

Tröll

Super Hugh-Man is a musical love letter from Rutene Spooner to the great Wolverine and Broadway star, Hugh Jackman. Rutene takes us on his personal voyage of discovery from being a young Māori boy growing up as an outsider in a world for which he has no blueprint. He realises that it’s ok to be a different kind of man: He can be strong and sensitive. He can haka and high kick. He can be fierce and fabulous.
