KIA ORA AND WELCOME TO THE TARANAKI ARTS FESTIVAL FOR 2017 An arts festival allows us to celebrate and better understand our diverse lives and cultures through music, dance, theatre, literature and visual arts. For three weeks in 2017 our festival will fill venues in New Plymouth and expand across the region, including the luxurious Staples Rodway Crystal Palace. As the worlds of politics, entertainment and social media converge and the pace of life increases the 2017 Arts Festival will explore the notion of progress. We will celebrate those great New Zealanders who made our lives better and richer, such as Kate Sheppard, Ernest Rutherford and Jean Batten. We will also look fondly back on the not-so-distant past with hit comedy Hudson & Halls Live! and the dazzling disco-cabaret VELVET. But it’s not just about the past – there is much to experience from the wider world as we bring contemporary artists from across the globe to share their stories with places as different and distinct as Ireland, Mexico, France, Korea and Denmark. They will all rub shoulders with many of our Taranaki-based artists and even you are invited to participate – help us to construct The TSB Community Trust People’s Tower, a beautiful temporary structure of cardboard and tape that will rise only to disappear the very next day. Welcome to wonderland... boogie wonderland! Inspired by New York’s Studio 54, VELVET is a seductive fusion of disco, dance and circus. With an international ensemble of performers, including legendary Australian diva Marcia Hines, VELVET takes audiences on a journey into a world of glitz and glamour. Before MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules there was Hudson & Halls. In the closet with the doors wide open, Peter Hudson and David Halls were New Zealand’s original gay love story, in a time when it was illegal to be gay. Todd Emerson (Hudson) and Chris Parker (Halls) replicate their famous onscreen chemistry with bitchiness, witty retorts and flamboyant performances. Having already written a play set in World War I, Dave Armstrong didn’t want to write one about Gallipoli, until he had the idea of a modern-day tale.

Anzac Eve is about four young backpackers from Down Under going to Gallipoli for the Dawn Ceremony, complete with selfies and smuggled vodka.

Enter the mind of a terrorist. Manifesto 2083 is a headline-grabbing play that even a reviewer has refused to review. In this one-man show New Zealand actor Edwin Wright plays Danish actor, Olaf Højgaard who in his quest to portray Norwegian right wing mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, becomes obsessed with him. On July 22, 2011, Breivik killed 77 people and injured more than 200. In this true-life horror story, audiences are introduced to the 1500-page manifesto he sent out before his killing sprees. Manifesto 2083 is about the makings of a self-radicalised lone wolf; with a deep hatred of multiculturalism and political correctness. With all the ingredients for a sizzling show, Chef – Come Dine With Us is a deliciously funny romp on the big stage. Slapstick comedy, brilliant break-dancing and breath-taking beat-boxing are thrown into the mix for this laugh-a-second performance loosely based around food. The premise is a crazy competition between two chefs – red chef and green chef – with the audience called on to help choose the winner. South Korean pop music and insanely talented beat-boxers provide the soundtrack for this food show parody, which is cheeky and at times totally bonkers. When Miss Jean Batten successfully landed in Auckland in 1936 the mayor greeted her with the words, “Jean you are a very naughty girl, and really I think you want a good spanking for giving us such a terribly anxious time here.” Flying in the face of danger and convention, Jean Batten wasn’t just cool and glamorous; she was a great pilot who knew how to wield a wrench. In this one-woman show Alex Ellis becomes Jean Batten, taking us on that epic journey in a single-engine plane made of wood and fabric and navigating with a compass and watch. Written by Phil Ormsby, the script is as elegant as the title character, who always dressed like a movie star, even when soaring through the skies. On this thrilling flight, in which Mt Taranaki has a fleeting role, Alex shares Jean Batten’s life story. ANATOMY OF THE PIANO (FOR BEGINNERS) WRITTEN BY WILL PICKVANCE SCOTLAND

When charming UK performer Will Pickvance was young he asked Father Christmas for a spaceship – instead he got a piano. In this one-man show, Will takes the audience on an adventure into the world of the piano. We find out where they come from, how they evolved and why the make a pretty cool Christmas present. Anatomy of the Piano premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2013, receiving critical acclaim and sell-out audiences. Since then, Will has continued to develop the show’s concept and taken it around the world. Billed as “part recital, part dissection”, this performance features whirlwind piano playing, songs and stories as well as hand-drawn projections. This show is for children aged 6+, their parents, aunts, uncles, and even the friendly neighbours. This entertaining look at the innards of a piano features Bach’s cave piano, Beethoven’s bad moods and even a jam with Fats Waller. A lovely evening outing for you and the kids.

AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE NEW ZEALAND/AOTEAROA

The reality proved to be a far cry from that, as is revealed in this often hilarious, but thought provoking play. The story, with its very own links to Taranaki, explores what happens when two young Kiwi men with very different views on war find themselves on the battlefields of Europe struggling to survive. Not that it’s all serious. This one-hour family-friendly story is also told through fun songs and clever set design, presenting complex politics in a way that everyone can discuss and understand. “An Awfully Big Adventure is exactly the sort of show I would have loved as a child, and one I absolutely love now as an adult”. – Theatre Review

It’s time to shine your dancing shoes Taranaki because this fun-filled event will have you moving and grooving.

Lovers of Irish music are in for an all-round treat with this show of original folk music, starring An Déise and Roesy. An Déise is a trio made up of Paddy Tutty, Derek Morrissey and Caoimhin O Fearghaíl. Best known for their work with Caladh Nua, they have performed at many of the world’s leading folk festivals.

Musicians An Déise and Roesy will be joined by the exuberant Charlotte Wright from Wellington, as they lead you in a traditional Irish ceili. For this knees-up folk dance session we’ll be pushing the chairs back and opening up a dance floor in the beautiful Crystal Palace.

They are joined by sharp-witted, contemporary singer songwriter, Roesy, a critically acclaimed Irish musician whose lyrics are poetry.

It will be a rollercoaster ride of sound when The Great Taranaki Steam Band swing into the Crystal Palace. The 40-strong community ensemble will play jazz standards from the likes of Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller. This will be a concert of varied styles, from uplifting to laidback, featuring jazz arrangements of much-loved tunes like I Heard it through the Grapevine, Tequila and Georgia on my Mind. This community focused group has been going for 17 years and still has original members. Some have picked up instruments from their sons and daughters when they left home and continued the passion for playing.

Sure to put a smile on your face, seasoned performers The Slacks will play a selection of original tunes, including their uplifting single Big Aroha. The Taranaki band have been performing for 17 years, but it wasn’t until November 2016 and the release of Big Aroha that they went “viral”. Schools and kapa haka groups have embraced the song and keep sending the band videos of their own renditions.

In this toe-tapping extravaganza the Steam Band will be under the baton of musical director Christopher Luke.

Prepare to feel the spirit when the Ars Nova Choir lifts the lid of the Crystal Palace. The 45-strong Taranaki choir will sing a suite of Black American gospel music arranged by John Rutter. In this moving and uplifting session audiences will hear songs that came from the voices of slaves dreaming to be free. People will be treated to music with driving rhythm, like the much-loved When the Saints Go Marching In and others with soulful sounds, like Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. Feel the Spirit will also feature soaring solos from Taranaki voice teacher and cabaret performer Lisa Rangi, who will sing with the choir. Under the direction of Christopher Luke this spiritual celebration with the Ars Nova Choir explores the music in which slaves found solace while under oppression. A small instrumental ensemble will accompany the choir.

Embracing the spirit and sounds of the 1960s and 1970s, Taranaki band The Blistered Fingers will serve up a sizzling and soulful show. In this lunchtime concert the group will perform rock ‘n’ roll blues, including their own take on songs from The Beatles. They will also play original music, some of which is bluesy, and some of which is upbeat and energetic. Karl Raubenheimer, Jimmy Hick, Kerr Sharpe-Young, Ashley Gesterkamp and Waru Hetet are the crew. They play everywhere, from 80th birthday parties to 21sts and from pubs to clubs. During the past four years they have performed gigs in London, Europe, and some members have even played in Africa. The band has supported the likes of Cornerstone Roots, but these days they headline their own shows.

Printmaker Antonia O’Mahoney draws freehand, creating images directly from her imagination that are then etched into a metal plate. She produces small editions of her work, and also exhibits the original plates, revealing the complexity of the process.

During two lunchtime events, artists whose creations have been selected for the Home Work exhibition at Puke Ariki will share insights into their artworks and take questions from the floor.

TUESDAY ARTISTS: Amanda Hewlett New Plymouth painter Amanda Hewlett is inspired by the land and the stories tied to it. Her work explores her identity as a New Zealander and often incorporates references to local history. Howard Tuffery Howard Tuffery has a studio in Urenui where he works mostly with stone sculpting and wood carving. However his latest public sculpture, Light on the Land on the New Plymouth foreshore, is a large stainless steel work. His work is inspired by his surroundings, particularly the Taranaki coast. Ian Axtell Painter Ian Axtell was born in England but moved to New Zealand in 1973. His work encompasses a wide range of styles from impressionism to abstraction, and is often inspired by the Taranaki environment.

Jordan Barnes New Plymouth’s Jordan Barnes is both a painter and a recording artist. He works in a range of media, including oil paint and charcoal, in a highly realist style and draws on his own life experiences for inspiration. Pat Greenfield Photographer Pat Greenfield lives in New Plymouth but is a regular visitor to Tongaporutu, where she has been documenting the changing coastline since 2000. Her images are a poignant reminder of the strength of natural forces and the impacts they have on our environment. HOW TO BOOK GENERAL ADMISSION If the phrase “General Admission” (GA) is used, specific seats are not allocated. Tickets are issued according to the venue capacity and patrons select their own seats after admission to the venue. Seating is on a ‘first come, first served’ basis so we recommend you arrive early.
