CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction

Course Description

Kick start your career in the construction industry with this entry-level course. You will gain basic knowledge of a variety of trades and the operational skills required to work on a construction site. The building and construction industry is predicted to grow moderately over the next five years. Job prospects are particularly strong for construction workers and labourers.

This course covers core units of competency required in most Certificate III building and construction qualifications, such as measurements and calculations, using hand and power tools and workplace health and safety. Elective units may be chosen from a range of streams including brick and blocklaying, carpentry, wall and floor tiling, and painting.

Our teachers have worked in their trade and maintain close industry ties, ensuring they deliver hands-on training that reflects current industry practice. Our large-scale training spaces are set up to replicate commercial and residential settings, delivering a "real-world" training experience. This foundation course provides a pathway to a number of the primary trades in the construction industry, with the exception of plumbing. You will develop the foundation skills you need to gain employment, secure an apprenticeship, or undertake further trade training.

Work Experience

Work experience is an important part of this course and provides students with an opportunity to further their learning whilst undertaking tasks relevant to their studies. Work experience can also help form career-building relationships.

We recommend all students undertake 80 hours of work experience and encourage students to be proactive in finding their own placement. Students may contact potential companies prior to the commencement of their course, however for legal, liability, and insurance reasons they must not start work experience until after the course has commenced and insurance is in place.

Finding a placement for work experience:

• Work experience needs to be within the construction industry i.e. Home builders, industrial construction companies, carpenters and joiners.

• While on work experience insurance will be covered by TAFE Queensland Gold Coast

• Work experience is unpaid.

• There is plenty of time to do work experience. It can be done on the weekends and school holidays.

• Students are responsible for organising their own transport to and from work experience.

• This is an opportunity to demonstrate an appropriate attitude and interest in your chosen career choice, increasing your chance of future employment opportunities. It may also help you gain an apprenticeship.

Further information, including how to gain insurance coverage, will be provided to you in the first few weeks of your course by the TAFE Gold Coast Vocational Placement Coordinator when they visit your class.

Course Funding

This program is a VET in School (VETiS) funded program so there is no cost to eligible students.

What is VET in School (VETiS) funding?

The VET investment budget provides funding for students to complete one VETiS qualification listed on the Priority Skills List while attending a Queensland secondary school (in Years 10, 11 and 12). Qualifications are primarily at certificate I and II level and are those that have been identified by industry as leading to employment.

Prior to enrolment, TAFE Queensland Gold Coast checks all student eligibility for VETiS funding. If it is deemed that a student has previously used their VETiS funding they will be contacted and offered a position with the full fee for service price.
