Career Taster Personal Services

Program Description

This introductory program offers hands-on experience across a range of industries, including hairdressing and barbering, beauty, make-up and nails, massage, and fitness at the TAFE Queensland campus.

Designed to help you explore your interests and discover potential career pathways, the program provides a practical introduction to each industry while building valuable workplace and employability skills. Learners begin with orientation, workplace health and safety (WHS), sustainability, and facility familiarisation before participating in a variety of interactive workshops.

Over the following weeks, participants will develop foundational skills and industry knowledge in hair and beauty services, make-up application, nail techniques, massage therapies, and fitness principles. Learners will also have opportunities to hear from industry professionals, participate in teaching team Q&A sessions, and gain insight into career opportunities across the health, beauty, and fitness sectors.

Topics Covered: Hairdressing and Barbering, Beauty Therapy, Make-Up and Nails, Massage and Fitness.

Selection Criteria

This program is offered to year 10 students currently enrolled in and attending a State, Private or Independent School in Queensland.

Resources Required

• Black t-shirt or polo shirt

• Black long pants

• Enclosed non-slip shoes

• On the day/s students participate in fitness activities, they will be required to bring a water bottle, gym towel, and appropriate gym attire. Details regarding which day/s fitness activities will occur will be provided during orientation on the first day. Fitness attire is not required on the first day.

Parking and Public Transport

• Visitor parking is available under the building on levels B1 and B2. Please note that parking spaces allocated to TAFE Queensland are clearly signed. Parking is available for pre-registered students.

• Short-term parking and drop-off are available via Laver Drive.

• The campus is located within walking distance of the Robina train station and many local bus stops.

• Cycling is a cost-effective option to get to class with best-practice end-of-trip facilities to encourage cycling to campus with secure bike storage.

Course Funding

The Career Taster Program is fully funded by the Queensland Government and is offered at no cost to eligible Year 10 students. It is also important to note that this program does not use any of your VET in Schools (VETiS) funding entitlement.
