Flexible study options TAFE Queensland offers flexible study options so you can gain a qualification while you’re still at school in a way that best suits you.
On campus TAFE Queensland offers some of the best training facilities in the state, with advanced, industrystandard workspaces and classrooms. All training is delivered in an adult learning environment so you’ll get a taste of what it’s like to study in a higher education setting. You’ll also learn from our highly-qualified teachers and benefit from their vast experience.
At school Many Queensland schools have partnered with TAFE Queensland to deliver vocational qualifications. School teachers are given specific training so they are qualified to deliver TAFE Queensland courses. Even if you undertake your training at school, you will still receive a TAFE Queensland qualification when you complete your course.
Industry experience Some TAFE at School courses require you to complete work placements, or in some instances to work in the industry. This gives you the opportunity to build your skills and confidence dealing with real-life situations. Work placement requirements should be discussed with your teacher prior to commencement of study.
Year 10 Career Tasters TAFE Queensland’s Career Tasters program is the perfect opportunity for Year 10 students to explore exciting career pathways in a fun, handson environment. The program includes interactive activities, industry insights and practical sessions - giving students a real-world look at potential careers.
School-based apprenticeship or traineeship TAFE Queensland offers both school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, which get you work-ready and a step ahead of your peers. Becoming a school-based apprentice or trainee gives you skills in a vocation or trade and allows you to earn money while you’re still at school. A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship also contributes credits towards your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). After selecting the industry you are interested in and talking with your school and parents/ guardians, your next step is to secure employment as an apprentice or trainee. An employer can be found through family and friends, by directly contacting employers and group training organisations, or by applying for advertised jobs. Once you have secured an apprenticeship or traineeship, just let your employer know you want to study with us. School-based apprentices and trainees do not pay fees for training at TAFE Queensland, this is funded by the Queensland Government; however you may need to pay some costs for tools and compulsory personal protective equipment, which we will outline upon enrolment. When you become a full-time apprentice or trainee after completing Year 12, you may be eligible for fee-free training for the remainder of your apprenticeship. For more information about school-based apprenticeships or traineeships call 1800 210 210 or visit dtet.qld.gov.au/training. Enrolment into TAFE at School courses is subject to eligibility requirements. Talk to your VET coordinator or guidance counsellor, or visit our website for more information.

Most TAFE at School courses have intakes in Semester 1 and/ or Semester 2, so you can choose to start studying at a time that suits you. By choosing to start your first course in Year 10 in Semester 2, you can often complete two courses by the time you have six months left of school. This frees you up to concentrate on your studies for the rest of Year 12 so you can nail your final assignments and exams. Bonus: you’re ready to hit the ground running in finding a job to earn money, support a gap year or university studies, and kick start your career.
Student support Everyone’s journey is different and sometimes you need some extra support to achieve your study goals. We’re here to help. At TAFE Queensland our student support services are available for all of our students, making your learning experience just that little bit easier. Learn more at tafeqld.edu.au/studentsupport. If you are a TAFE at School student, your regular school support programs are also responsible for ensuring you receive appropriate levels of support while at TAFE. It is expected that if your school normally provides you with a participation assistant or similar for day-to-day learning or personal support, then they also provide this support when you attend your TAFE at School course.
Cost and payment options Costs vary from course-to-course and you can check our website for the most up-todate prices. You may be eligible for a range of fee-free TAFE at School courses. In addition to paying for full fees for courses upfront, as a TAFE Queensland student there are a range of subsidies, concessions and loans you may be eligible for to assist you with the cost of your study and training. For more information and eligibility requirements, please visit dtet.qld.gov.au/training/ providers/funded/vetis. Eligible students are entitled to one government funded program only. Payment plans may also be available to assist with payment of your course; however if you’re under 18 you will need a guarantor. Applications will be subject to credit checks. For information about our withdrawal and refund policy, please visit the TAFE Queensland website: tafeqld.edu.au/policies.

Get ready for university
Learn hands on with the same equipment and tools used in industry, combining working for an employer and studying at TAFE Queensland, and graduate with a nationally-recognised qualification.
If you need to complete additional prerequisites for university during or after high school, Unilearn is the perfect option. You can study a range of subjects from maths and science to senior English.
Applying for an apprenticeship or traineeship is very similar to applying for any other job. You need to have a current resume that lists your education, interests and referees. Studying a TAFE at School pre-apprenticeship course can boost your chances of landing your dream job by demonstrating to a potential employer that you’re actively interested in their industry.
With the ability to study online and after hours, you can easily add a Unilearn subject or two to your senior schooling years. Unilearn subjects can also provide additional Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credit points.
The first step is to visit an Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP) to help connect you with an employer. Once you have secured your apprenticeship, talk to your employer about choosing TAFE Queensland as your training provider. Your employer will sort out the formalities of your training contract directly with TAFE Queensland.

Information for parents It’s tough being a teenager in their final years of school, trying to decide what to do with the rest of their lives. The pressure’s on as early as Year 10 and it feels like results and choices will make or break their future. It can be tough for parents too. Knowing when to intervene or when to take a step back seems impossible at times. But your behind-the-scenes role is crucial to their success.
About vocational education and training University is not for everyone. Vocational training is not for everyone. Education is for everyone. Most careers need some form of education and training. But they don’t all require a university degree. There are a variety of reasons your child or students should consider vocational education and training (VET). Perhaps they want to enter a trade, test out an industry, gain Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credits, or maybe they just need to improve or contribute towards their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
Why TAFE Queensland Not everyone learns in the same way or at the same pace. At TAFE Queensland there are as many options as there are individuals with pathway options to suit your child’s needs and help them kick start their career. For more information visit tafeqld.edu.au/ parents.
Busting VET myths There are a number of common misconceptions about vocational education and training (VET) in Australia. The following myths highlight how perceptions differ from current reality. MYTH: VET and TAFE are outdated and no longer relevant. FACT: Modern VET is industry‑led, with up‑to‑date facilities, teachers and courses aligned to today’s jobs. VET training is delivered in contemporary, purpose‑built facilities using equipment and technology found in industry. Teachers maintain current industry experience, and courses are regularly updated and designed to be shorter and more flexible to meet workforce needs. MYTH: University graduates find work more easily than VET graduates. FACT: VET graduates have strong employment outcomes and are often job‑ready sooner. VET focuses on practical training for in‑demand occupations experiencing skill shortages. Apprentices, trainees and graduates benefit from real‑world experience that employers value, supporting high employment levels soon after completion. MYTH: VET graduates earn less than university graduates. FACT: VET graduates can earn similar wages to, or more than, university graduates. Many VET pathways lead to occupations with competitive starting salaries, particularly in trades, healthcare and technical industries. VET students can also earn while they learn, gaining income and experience during their training. MYTH: VET only leads to limited or short‑term jobs. FACT: VET prepares people for practical, future‑focused careers. VET provides skills for industries essential to Australia’s future economy, including construction, renewables, healthcare, cyber security, services and small business. Practical, adaptable training supports long‑term employability in a changing world of work.

Alexandra Hills campus
Kick‑start your trade career like Violet Studying a pre‑apprenticeship course at TAFE Queensland’s Alexandra Hills campus helped Violet discover a clear pathway into an automotive trade career by studying the Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation (AUR20720). The best part? She could do it close to home. With access to industry‑standard training facilities, modern equipment and experienced trade teachers, Violet gained hands‑on skills and confidence before stepping into an apprenticeship pathway.
“The workshop is literally wonderful, everything is up to spec, everything’s new. I love getting hands‑on and learning how things work,” said Violet. Alexandra Hills offers purpose‑built trade facilities that mirror real work environments, helping students build practical skills and understand industry expectations. Pre‑apprenticeship graduates are more job‑ready, more confident and better prepared for apprenticeships, qualities that employers value. With certificate II courses in automotive, electrotechnology, plumbing and automotive electrical technology, you’ll build practical experience and become job‑ready for industry. If you want to be like Violet and kick‑start your trade career, apply for a pre‑apprenticeship course at the Alexandra Hills campus today.
