DIRECTOR’S NOTES Churchill is one of the most celebrated and inventive playwrights of the 20th and 21st centuries, and TAFE Queensland Acting is thrilled to be staging the Australian Premiere of her latest work Glass. Kill. Bluebeard. Imp. in addition to What If If Only.

world is at the heart of her writing. It is often remarked how intense our third-year plays are. As both a director and human being, I can’t help but feel compelled to meet the actors and audiences with the same level of intensity and honesty as the complicated society/world we live in. This is not just entertainment. It is a commitment. The 3rd I have had the pleasure and challenge of year actors have been taken through a directing to date a handful of Churchill’s lengthy and intense process, confronted works; A Mouthful of Birds (2013), The with material and knowledge that is often Skriker (2016), and Love and Information outside their lived experiences. It is only fair (2019). I have, as I always do, taken risks that we as creatives and audiences meet and pushed these works beyond the pages. these plays head-on in the same modus as I feel this is what the writer wants, and what they have been written, with rigor, these particular works require. Churchill’s abandonment and risk…. razor-sharp social commentary surrounding the inherent inequality and violence of our

GLASS. A girl made of glass… a boy’s heart is shattered… ‘there’s a splinter in your eye and a splinter in your heart. And they need to sweep the street well.’ KILL. A Greek tale of betrayal, revenge, homicide, and incest. The Gods say, ‘We don’t exist, people make us up, they make up the furies and how they bite.’ BLUEBEARD. Two couples muse over the realisation that their friend is a serial killer. ‘He was so charming. He loved lovely things, porcelain. And he played the piano so beautifully.’

IMP. A woman keeps company with a nasty little imp in a bottle. ‘I always think it might make something bad happen.’ WHAT IF IF ONLY. A woman grieves for her deceased partner. Confronted by the ghost of multiple futures she is presented with a choice. ‘Equality and cake and no bad bits.’ These brilliant theatrical miniatures explore with surreal humour and inventiveness the violence and tenderness beneath everyday life.
