A strong example of the connection between Scarpa and Zumthor’s work is the “Bruder Klaus

Field Chapel” Germany, completed in 2007. The chapel is very simple yet a great example of attentionto detail, materiality and context.

Peter Zumthor, a Swiss Architect, was also highly influenced by Carlo Scarpa. Zumthor was highly impacted by Scarpa’s sensitivity to materials and light, his attention to detail, as well as his deep respect for history and context. Through his designs its evident that Scarpa’s works have had an impact on Zumthor’s work. Some of these works include the Brion Cemetery, the Olivetti Showroom and the Castelvecchio Museum just to mention a few, Scarpa’s entire body of work had a huge influence on Zumthor’sdesignsandcreations.

The chapel is almost completely made from locally-sourced concrete, poured in layers around a wooden framework.

Zumthor purposefully left the surface of the concrete unfinished, this allowed the natural variations in color and textureto remain visible.. The rough texture and different variations allow the building to blend in with the surroundings. All this has high similaritieswhencomparedto Scarpa’s work

My designs were inspired by Carlo Scarpa, Peter Zumthor and Tadao Ando. taking their interest in high attention to detail, light and shadow play and material use and its effects, I produced concepts that have my own original qualities as well as similarities to the work that the architects have done. All the models were made from white card. The materiality mainly concrete and light effect is shown through rendering and visualization of my ideas.

This concept took heavy inspiration from the work of Tadao Ando and Carlo Scarpa. Attempting to create a simple shape and design yet paying attention to as much detail as possible. The structure has concrete wall with a smooth finish on the exterior and a rough and unfinished texture on the interior giving a totally different experience once you have entered the building. The interior is fully lit by natural lighting which help the users navigate around the space , leading to a giant x end the end of the building. The intention is to provide the users with a journey like experience, in which they follow the light in a dark room leading to the final point officially markedwith anX.

Final point (x )

This concept was mostly inspired by Carlo Scarpa, using elements like his use of concrete, attention to detail and light play, the intention was to create a space in which the user is surrounded by light walls and textures with different colors yet in harmony. The interior is composed of wood, concrete and tiles. The exterior will be fully made of concrete blocks. This is all in relation to Scarpas works. Cuts and openings through the walls allow natural light to fill the space. These openings are placed on different sides of the buildings giving different patterns during different periods of the day whenlightpassesthrough them.

The third concept took inspiration from Zumthor and Scarpa’s work. the intention was to create a simple cube form for the exterior with an abstract interior. The structure has a concrete exterior and a mixture of stone and concrete for the interior. The interior is meant to provide the user a gallery like experience through its contrast with the exterior and high ceiling. The main source of light enters through the entrance, the ceiling has an opening which allows light to enter through the roof and with a reflective sculpture hanging from the ceiling light enters the space at different angles, giving the space a morevisually satisfyingappeal.
