e’re just going to paddle from here down to Caras Park. Just doing a quick little paddle board....We paddle board a lot. My husband actually surfs too, but the surf is down right now. This is usually what happens. When the waves are out then we go paddle board.”

“I’m pregnant too so it kind of limits my ability to do other things, but Paddle boarding is still good, riding bikes is still good. ... I just can’t surf or do anything where I could potentially get injured.”

“We took it up last year at the beginning of summer because I actually had surgery on both my feet so I was limited in what I could do but paddle boarding was a lot like all of the things I was doing in physical therapy. We started paddle boarding at the beginning of the summer last year and we just loved it.

We paddle board until it’s like really, really too cold.” Farr says laughing.” We’ll be out here in wetsuits in the fall.”

DAYTON DAZE

event marks 25th anniversary in style Sept. 10

I

t’s all about patriotism this election year, and Dayton Daze will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in style on Saturday, Sept. 10. This year also marks the 15th anniversary of 9/11—an event that drew America’s community together in an inspiring show of patriotism and national solidarity. For that reason, the theme for this year’s event is “Firefighters: The Heart of Patriotism”, and once again the festivities will take place at the Dayton Park.

The flea market will start early (all spaces just $10 each) and run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Donations to the CCVFD/QRU space are welcome.) Beginning at 1 p.m. there will be live music, kids games, an elaborate face painting booth, free hot dogs (donations welcome), cotton candy, frozen treats, live music, A.L.E.R.T. helicopter landing (1 p.m.), drug dog exhibition, free rides to historic Proctor, parade (3 p.m.) with prizes for best costume and best entry, firefighter competitions, a rifle raffle (with lots more prizes), 50/50, and a whole lot more.

The entire community gets involved in this fundraiser, including the Dayton Church (with baked goods and bazaar), Mission Mountain Winery (with free wine-tasting), the Dayton Yacht Club (offering sailboat rides) and the Idle Spur. So come out and help Dayton Daze celebrate its silver anniversary by waving the stars and stripes, wearing your heart on your sleeve, donning some red, white and blue, dressing as a firefighter, or donning any combination of the above! It’s good wholesome fun for the entire family and benefits a great cause. This year the event is raising money for a rescue vehicle to carry medical supplies, backboards, traffic signs and cones, extra gear and bottled water to have on site. Also on Saturday, Sept. 10, Mission Mountain Winery encourages visitors to attend its free event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s Dayton Day at the winery as it joins the community of Dayton in celebrating its 105th anniversary. T

he Community Foundation For A Better Bigfork invites one and all to its 16th annual Fundraising Auction on Wednesday, September 7 at the Garden Bar in downtown Bigfork.

Festivities start at 5p.m. Come early and enjoy the fun at Bigfork’s most famous bar.

There will be free beer, wine and food to help you enjoy the evening.

The CFBB is a nonprofit, volunteer organization started in the early 1970s by several dedicated Bigfork residents. Its efforts are focused on enhancing and preserving the beauty and uniqueness of Bigfork community while promoting social, artistic and educational interests for the common good of the community. All proceeds raised from the auction go toward supporting CFBB’s efforts.

In 2015 alone it spent nearly $100,000 just to maintain the community and its amenities that make Bigfork the town we and our visitors love. This includes building and repairing our sidewalks, striping and sweeping our streets, providing downtown public bathrooms, installing decorative street lights, and trash can receptacles. It has also installed benches, bike racks and “doggie pollution” stations in town and down the Swan River Nature Trail.

It also offers a community service grants program, financial support to the Bigfork Elves, and several other community groups including the Nordic Center, Bigfork Art and Cultural Center, Bigfork Chamber of Commerce, Crown of the Continent and Bigfork Little League teams.

At the September 7 event there will be great silent and live auction items. The “live “auction” begins around 6p.m. There will be several wonderful items to bid on, including vacation getaways, exclusive dinners, tickets to major sporting events, and exquisite art, sculptures and jewelry. The silent auction items are split into several sections, each closing at various times throughout the night.

Items in the silent auction offer a wide range of services, products, art, jewelry, dining opportunities and much, much more.

All funding for community projects comes from the annual auction, one-time membership dues and private donations.

Please come and support Bigfork whether you are a CFBB member or not. All that it does for the community depends on donations and fundraisers. This is its most important fundraising event so please come, enjoy and be a winning bidder on some great items.

he Hamilton Players are presenting its sixth and final annual Broadway & Bubbly.

The show will be reprised on an occasional basis but if you‘ve been meaning to catch it, now’s the time.

This year’s performers are Tasha Fain, Mara Luther, Eric Monson (each has performed in five previous B&Bs), Austin Athman and Tim Shonkwiler (who have performed in four previous B&Bs), and Jenica Burrows (her first Broadway & Bubbly). All of the performers have graced the stage of the Playhouse in many a show and it’s fun to see them in this concert format. Pianists are Rob Thomas and Rebecca Burns.

B&B 6 is a “Best of” show, reprising titles from prior year B&B and there will be a handful of new songs as well. The program is not being revealed before the show so we can all be surprised when we hear the song intros.

ASCAP rights to songs for this “concert” show do not permit staging or performance in costume related to the actual show. So the staging is sparse, a chair perhaps to create a performance space, and lighting. The performers are attired in formal wear; men turned out in crisp tuxedos or dinner jackets and women in elegant gowns are always a treat. The performers working in the proverbial empty space focuses all attention on the music and talents of the performers and musicians, who also happen to be neighbors and friends in our community.

The bubbly aspect of the title refers to more than the champagne – the show is surprisingly good, enjoyable and uplifting. The players know most of these tunes and

B&B is one of those performances that suspends time and concludes before you’re ready for it to end. You will leave the theatre dance-walking a few steps, humming a favorite tune, smiling.

Broadway & Bubbly makes a great date night or girls night out and also provides the opportunity to support our local theatre company as it’s one of the Players major fundraising events. This reception and show are smooth and elegant and don’t reveal all the hard work that goes into developing the idea for a show, planning, mounting and marketing it, and hosting guests at the performances. It takes a big crew and we are fortunate indeed to have such a vibrant and skilled theatre group in our community.

he Montana Book Festival returns to Downtown Missoula, Sept. 20-25. The Jealous Kind by James Lee Burke

On its surface, life in Houston is as you would expect: drive-in restaurants, souped-up cars, jukeboxes, teenagers discovering their sexuality. f your favorite taste of summer makes you pucker, the place you ought to be on Saturday, Sept.

10, is Lewistown, Montana.

For the 27th year now, Lewistown holds its Chokecherry Festival that day. It’s one more day to celebrate Lewistown, what many consider to be the geographic center of Montana. More details are available online at the festival website, lewistownchokecherry.com.

Organizers say they expect about 5,000 people to attend the event, which remains something of a well-kept secret, even after former Montana Gov. Stan Stevens made the trip to Lewistown in 1991 and had such a good time he proclaimed Lewistown the Chokecherry Capital of Montana.

One of the favorite wild fruits of Montana, chokecherries were used by Native American tribes.

They pounded them together, seeds and all, with bison meat to make pemmican.

Nowadays, chokecherry syrup is a favorite product derived from this fruit of the Great Plains, and those attending the festival will get a chance to have it on their pancakes as the Kiwanis Club kicks off the day with a pancake breakfast on Main Street and Second Avenue. It starts at 7 a.m.

A culinary contest will bring out some of the best chokecherry innovations of Montana kitchens.

Contest entries are due by 8 a.m., with judging at 9 a.m. and culinary tasting at 10 a.m.

A 5K walk/run and a 10K run get under way at 9 a.m., and a 1-mile fun run takes place at 10 a.m.

A chokecherry pit spitting contest at 1 p.m. will winnow the field to find those Montanans who best know how to elevate and expectorate.

Vendors will be lined up in the downtown to sell their wares, some with a festival focus … jams, jellies and the like. Vendor booths are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Glasgow, Montana, photographer Sean R. Heavey’s work will be the focus of an art show at the Lewistown Art Center for the month of September, with an opening reception on Friday, Sept. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. Heavey said the show will comprise 46 images, mostly new works, including large prints on metal of Heavey’s photographs of Montana storms.

Heavey’s work photographing storms is also the focus of an upcoming issue in Montana Magazine. It will be one more reason to make the trek to Lewistown for the Chokecherry Festival on Sept. 10.

America’s Wild Heart Bozeman writer celebrates Yellowstone in new book

ozeman writer David Quammen – widely regarded for superb writing about science – has followed up his recent article about Yellowstone in National Geographic magazine with a book about Yellowstone, published by National Geographic Books.

Four million sightseers visited Yellowstone, America’s first national park, in 2015 and the 2016 numbers are already breaking visitor records as the National Park Service celebrates its centennial.

When the National Park Service began in 1916, Yellowstone National Park was already decades old, having been established already in 1872.

David Quammen spent more than two years deeply immersed in Yellowstone and its surrounding ecosystem and has been a resident of the area for 30 years, National Georgraphic Books says. He shared the results of his research in part in National Geographic Magazine’s May 2016 issue.

His book is called Yellowstone: A Journey Through America’s Wild Heart from National Geographic Books. It was hot off on the press on Aug. 23. It pairs the brilliant visual storytelling of National Geographic photographers that audiences are accustomed to with the lyrical writing of Quammen – a bestselling and award-wining author recognized as “not just among our best science writers but among our best writers, period” by the New York Times.

In Yellowstone, Quammen looks at the park’s inception and history, its heroes and challenges, its massive ecosystem and the iconic and often endangered animals within it, such as grizzly bears, wolves and bison. Quammen also examines the concept of protected wild lands and their future: the differing opinions and all that’s at stake as civilization meets park boundaries. And he considers what the headlines allude to — the tensions of a land cherished by the public that’s simultaneously a much-needed haven for native species. Yellowstone includes exclusive or newly expanded sections, including passages describing Yellowstone as an island ecosystem, social attitudes toward wolves, unexpected connections among grizzlies, elk and wolves, and the impact of private ranches in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

As David Quammen puts so well, “Yellowstone is a big national park, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is bigger still, but the ideas and values that these places represent — the decisions and commitments they demand — are as big as America itself.”

David Quammen authored the “Natural Acts” column for Outside magazine for 15 years. His articles have also appeared in National Geographic, Harper’s, Rolling Stone, the New York Times Book Review and other periodicals, and he has also written 15 books. Quammen’s book “Spillover” was nominated for the 2013 PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. Quammen lives in Bozeman, Montana.

The Things That We Are Made Of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s Spirit of Fire

eautifully written and lovingly paced, “The Things That We Are Made Of” is an uplifting and very human account of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s self-reflective consciousness.

Living, as Carpenter attests, is a fine art, like painting or music, and is governed by certain fundamental laws. The fire of life’s creativity was lit in Carpenter long ago and it burns bright on “The Things That We Are Made Of”.

At 58, perhaps Carpenter is now at the height of her musical career, painting a compelling, relevant piece of art tinged with mixed feelings of grief and joy, all without preaching or darkening our minds with sadness. As much as she desires to be a progressive and forward-looking person, “all that’s visible is what’s left behind,” sings Carpenter on the track “What Does It Mean To Travel.” Her mind is stretched by the rigors of such analysis.

“I think that if you have a creative personality, in general, you don’t know if you can turn it on and off,” said Mary Chapin Carpenter. “I think I’ve naturally evolved into someone to where it’s just a part of what I am and what I do. I will be driving to the grocery store and thinking a lot about what I’m working on. It all seems pedestrian, at least on the surface, driving to the grocery store, but I’m thinking about the process, thinking in my head, and lost in my thoughts. I’m not one who compartmentalizes everything.

“I am happiest and at my most productive when at home and it’s hard for me to find quite the right focus and solitude to write songs when traveling. The conditions at home feel most comfortable. When I first started, I felt like I needed to be writing all of the time, on the plane, the hotel, the bus and that was too much pressure.”

While music is certainly a commodity like mouthwash or bars of soap, certain artists such as Carpenter have been able to stick to their roots and beliefs through decades of perseverance.

“Some years ago when I was at Columbia, it was more of a negotiation and more like a marriage,” said Carpenter. “I had to compromise certain artistic decisions because I wanted that marriage to work. I’ve tried as best as I can for as long as I have been around to serve the songs and make the best records and decisions I could as a songwriter and artist. I’ve had great help and assistance and support. There is no such thing as perfection. There are pressures of the business and the need to survive and it’s tempting to make a path that’s easier, going with trends. That’s why it’s important to have that sense of self.”

Carpenter’s sense of self permeates “The Things That We Are Made Of”, disclosing a deep sense of both the solidity and fragility of life. She dug down to discover nuggets of self-exploration. Internal excavation was a natural stimulus for Carpenter to write about the most essential issues that face us all: life, death, love, work and fulfillment.

“It poses questions at every verse,” said Carpenter. “I’m at a place and age where I’m going along and I like to think that I can chart my own course, that I’m free to make decisions, to be as spontaneous as I would like, you know, wild at heart, and all of that. That is the truth. But there is another part that desires to feel safe, to feel connected, and to be protected. What I was trying to articulate is that duality, two sides of ourselves that want to be unanswerable but also want that deep connection and safety. How to reconcile those two things? The song “Something Tamed Something Wild” poses that question and those conversations run through the record.”

Indeed, as a polished piece of art, “The Things That We Are Made Of” expresses a deep wisdom, shining a light in a way that is compelling and accessible, a richer understanding of who and what we are. The lyrics reveal an opened heart to an existence tender, gentle, adoring, steadfast, and eternal. Carpenter’s vocal work reaches deeply as passionate and expressive, yet familiar and natural.

The opening track “Something Tamed Something Wild” sets the record’s gorgeous mood, a pensive quarrying of the balance between fulfillment and excitement, between the ineluctable trait of always looking back through the “tears of a little child” while understanding that the knowing is only attained in the present. As Carpenter “listens hard to what’s inside” and “the dwindling of time,” we hear a life-affirming spirituality mixed with the somber dread of the final moment when, as poet Robert Lowell once put it,”the wristwatch has been taken from the wrist.”

“I’m at an age where it is hard not to live without a sense of getting older, of time passing. How can you not be aware of that? I had one serious health issue a few years ago, which brought everything to a halt. If I were not aware, then I’d be made of stone. But I’m not. I think the music is informed of the awareness of time passing, of growing older, of both quotidian existence and the long view. I think that it’s one of those pieces of subject matter that’s going to inform everything from here on out.”

Everyone loves to cite solitary motivation, but the finished product never transpires in a vacuum. Producer Dave Cobb participated strongly in helping Carpenter create her vision. The artist in Carpenter was reluctant to cede artistic autonomy. She embraced the noble challenge. What followed was a fearless, thoughtful musical meditation on tracks such as “Note On A Windshield,” and one of the finest albums of her career, which spans 14-full length recordings.

“I put myself in Cobb’s orbit and I’m delighted I did,” said Carpenter. “It’s scary and intimidating to approach people. But it paid off.

It was a comfortable environment that everyone fed off of; every idea was valid and every answer was yes.”

No matter how advanced in their careers, singer-songwriters experience pangs of insecurity, the risk of being viewed as nutty, out of touch, self-absorbed or worse.

“When you think about it, it’s a vulnerable place,” said Carpenter. “The songs are not disconnected from you. You write these songs and then you play them for strangers in the studio or stage, and you are asking them to plug into them, spiritually, and artistically, and you are stripped pretty naked. You are not acting a part. After all these years, I’m still keen to do it, and that’s the reward of writing. It’s still a vulnerable position to be in.”

Carpenter said that Cobb changed the direction of her thoughts and perceptions to transform the recording experience. In a humorous, compassionate way, Cobb nudged her to explore the songs and their meanings. And she began to hear some remarkable things.

“I think a good producer has the ability to restrain or curb an artist’s worst impulses — and that’s a good contribution. We are all our own worst critics. We think we should have sung that differently or better. But Dave is about getting a performance, even if it’s technically not perfect or up to par. He’d remind everyone that many great records were out of tune, or behind the bar or chord, but it was the performance that mattered.”

“What I came with was a valuable thing. I agreed and accepted. I didn’t push back. Actually, in the end, it was great to be able to let go, which is the whole reason I wanted to try something new. I figured if I pushed back, I’d be behaving the same way I behaved before.”

Young Artists Competition MASO Event offers cash scholarships and opportunity to perform with professional orchestra

he Montana Association of Symphony Orchestras, or MASO, is inviting all Montana musicians, ages 13 to 22 who play any of the standard orchestral instruments to apply for its biennial Young Artists Competition, to be held on Saturday, January 14 in Bozeman.

Applications for the MASO Young Artists Competition can be downloaded from the MASO website at montanasymphonies.org and must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, Nov. 23 for this statewide competition.

“The MASO Young Artists Competition has a great tradition of identifying and presenting some of the most talented musicians in our state. It’s a tremendous opportunity for young musicians to participate in the thrill of competition and to ultimately have the chance to play with a professional symphony orchestra. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime – I strongly encourage all the young artists to apply, “said John Zoltek, chair of the Young Artists Competition and music director of the Glacier Symphony and Chorale.

In addition to an opportunity to perform with a Montana symphony orchestra, winners of each division win a cash scholarship: junior (ages 13-15), $450; senior (age 16 through high school graduate), $650; and college (post high school through age 22),

$1,000. Participating orchestras include the Glacier Symphony, Billings Symphony, Bozeman Symphony, Butte Symphony, Great Falls Symphony, and Helena Symphony.

Once jurors have screened the applications, finalists are invited to perform in person on Saturday, Jan. 14 on the campus of Montana State University. The public is invited to watch these talented young musician compete.

The competition, which recognizes and nurtures talented young Montana musicians, is made possible, in part, through a legislative grant from Montana’s Cultural Trust and grants from the Montana Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts.

UM Jazz Artist Series Kicks off 2nd Year with Jazz at Lincoln Center Artist

T

he University of Montana Jazz Program will launch the second year of the UM Jazz Artist Series with a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, woodwind artist Victor Goines and his quartet. Joining Goines will be Missoula’s own acclaimed pianist David Morgenroth. This spectacular performance will be on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Building Recital Hall on the campus of the University of Montana.

In addition to Goines and Morgenroth, the jazz quartet will feature Chicago-based bass player Emma Dayhuff (originally from Bozeman) and drummer Greg Artry. All the musicians have international experience performing and educating musicians bringing their respect for the tradition and original yet swinging music.

The University of Montana Jazz Program and the UM Jazz Artist Series will once again welcome some of the greatest international jazz artists this year including concerts on Nov. 18 with vocalist and master of ceremonies Huey Lewis, the fifth annual Holiday Swing on Dec. 10 with Missoula’s own woodwind artist Gary Herbig and, capping off the series, the 37th Annual UM Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival to be held on March 16-17, 2017.

roy De Roche has long equated the flute with the patina of positivity.

The Blackfeet flautist, 63, was born on the Flathead Indian Reservation on the edge of a Heart Butte cattle ranch. In the spring, grandfather would use his pocket knife to slice and yank the chips off of the cedar trees. He’d proceed to poke out holes in the bark, carving it like a whistle.

“After they were dried out, they would last for a day or so as crude flutes,” said De Roche. “That’s what got me interested.”

The flute re-emerged in De Roche’s life many years later, this time materializing as the choice between self-creation or self-destruction. His life was at a dead end. In the late1980s, De Roche, smarting from the effects of back surgery from a work-related injury and a broken neck sustained in a car crash, grabbed a shaving of western red cedar and carved his nephew a flute. He made himself one, too. Memories of willow bark flutes fashioned by his grandfather’s hands abetted his recovery.

“I blew out three lower vertebrae working in construction on the Blackfeet reservation,” said De Roche. “They were always sideways. By the time I’d take the one-hour drive back home from the doctor’s office, they’d be back out again.

“I don’t believe there is anything more healing than going through therapy with a flute or playing the flute. Once I’d had the flute back in my life, I quit drinking and doing drugs, and I am blessed that I got into flute. It has changed my life and changed my attitude on life.”

Constructing flutes crystallized an about-face; realizing that he had to stop being a slave to dependency and self-pity, De Roche felt autonomy at his fingertips. The old ways with which he struggled for so long disappeared. What replaced them were new pathways sparked by the jubilant sounds and scents of cedar. Intuiting that De Roche was embarking on a special path, Browning elder Al Potts even gave him the name “Shu’k Sha’mii,” or “Good Medicine.”

De Roche creates flutes inside a garage adjacent to his gallery in Hot Springs. There, with a routing tool, adhesive, clamps and the dexterity of his hands, he takes a cudgel of

wood and transforms it into the epitome of pure beauty in sound. Before one of his flutes is complete, he will wet sand it three times with fine sandpiper; its maintenance no more than the occasional lathering of beeswax.

“Cedar is one of the main woods I use because it’s a soft wood and the grain is straight,” said De Roche. “I split it and then carve it out and then glue it back together. Western red cedar has a softer, mellow earthy tone. Aromatic cedar, which is in the juniper family, is sweet with a perfume smell, and has a beautiful mellow tone.

“A lot of the woods out there are poisonous, especially the South American ones, so you don’t want to be putting them in your mouth. Even still, often someone will say to me, ‘I am going to get a wood shop, get a book, and make a flute.’ I’ve never had any of those guys who say that ever come and bring a flute back. Because I still am learning stuff all of the time about making the flutes. If you angle them too much, they sound airy, if they are not angled enough, they sound airy.”

Akin to the way that different woods produce special tones, inaccurately spaced or misaligned measurements can toss a flute grossly out of tune. The tricky thing about a flute is that if it’s constructed out of tune, it simply can’t be returned to be re-tuned. It’s either clear-toned or it’s not.

“I will pick up the flutes in the galleries and maybe one of 12 are in tune and playable, and I got tired of that,” said De Roche. “If I won’t get up on stage and play them, I won’t sell them. Each wood is different. It was a living thing and to me it’s still living. The first note out of the flute brings it back to life. It’s an amazing feeling – like giving birth or life.

To hear the beautiful tone that comes out after you make it, and the amazing music that comes out, is such a pleasure. A gift has been given to me to do this.”

Give with all your heart and you will receive: De Roche’s performances at festivals nationwide and five albums of original compositions have secured his reputation as an authentic conduit “of Native American people through music,” he said. Indeed, preserving tradition and the nearly spectral resonance of the flute are important to De Roche. So, too, is gratitude.

“The first professional studio I worked in was in England and to go from a construction worker to a studio where t he Beatles recorded was one of those great moments.”

De Roche said that the natural sounds of the flute resonate on multiple ecological dimensions.

“It is such a healing thing for people to sit and play or listen to the flute,” said De Roche.

“There are times that I’ll start playing and there are animals that will come on over. I was up by Bull Lake, by the giant cedars at a campground, and two loons were out on the lake.

I took that flute and made the loon sound. The loons quit singing and looked over and they started answering in the middle of the lake.”

De Roche speaks with the kind of certainty that makes doubt seem like a disease. The purely positive power of this energy is something he can feel inside, it is something he has developed an inner awareness of.

“I believe that you are playing from the heart,” said De Roche. “You play with a lot of feelings. I remember one time I was playing in Honolulu, and I got up and I told them, ‘I am going to take you guys on this journey for 45 minutes.’ I said, ‘After each song, don’t clap, because I am going to stop and get another flute.’ At the beginning, the kids in front were fidgeting and people were looking at their phones. But when you start playing, you can feel the energy from the audience. Then, the kids sitting there are not moving.

Minutes after, the MC returned, and it was like the people then woke up. You use your energy as you are playing.”

De Roche said that the Native American flute’s six hole primary note scale makes it one of the easiest of all instruments to play.

“It doesn’t take a lot of air, either,” said De Roche. “I can sit someone down and teach them the scale in 15 minutes.”

Ultimately, art has allowed De Roche to find rest in the light, the calm of a lake without ripples, to rise to another plane. Perhaps it’s not exaggerated to say that in this case the flute has served as the instrument of divine will.

“During the day, I will sometimes see the flute by my chair and I will pick it up and play it,” said De Roche. “If I didn’t have the flute, I wouldn’t be around.”

Present Tense

he Montana Museum of Art and Culture recently featured the beauty of language in its special exhibition of Shakespeare’s First Folio. This fall the museum will present another special exhibit that features the power of language.

“Present Tense”, a series of prints by contemporary artists that incorporate text or language, will be on display at the MMAC from September 29 to January 14,

2017.

We all use language every day. It makes us human and gives meaning to our everyday lives. Language empowers. As is readily apparent in the rhetoric of today’s politicians, it can be used to persuade and to inflame and to incite action. It can evoke a range of emotions. It can be playful and funny.

In the last several decades, visual artists have explored language, text, words, sometimes even single letters, to address serious social and political issues such as gender, violence, pollution, and racism. But they have also used language to intrigue us, to make us curious, to make us smile. The use of text in art often compels the viewer to slow down and consider the words carefully, not only their superficial meaning but also their deeper meaning as symbols of larger ideas.

This becomes especially important in today’s world, when people are inundated with language in advertising, on the web, in graffiti, and in various social media such as Twitter. Too often, such use of language invites uncritical thinking and “knee jerk” reactions. To cite one all-too-common example, one child will bully another child by posting a negative comment on social media. Soon others have joined in, and the bullying quickly spreads. This has led to serious consequences among vulnerable children and teenagers.

The exhibit “Present Tense” includes works by famous contemporary artists such as Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol who used language to challenge its typical narrative

function. Other artists like Jenny Holzer or Robert Cottingham have used letters, words or short phrases that make viewers think about shape and symbolic meaning in different ways.

The MMAC docents have been working with SPARK!, which supports arts education in schools, to use “Present Tense” as a learning opportunity for students studying not only art, but also English, social studies and math. But this exhibit is not only for students. Anyone visiting the Montana Museum of Art and Culture and viewing this exhibit will discover a rich springboard for thought and discussion.

The exhibition will open to the public Thursday, September 29, 5 p.m. in UM’s PARTV Center. An opening reception will begin with a printmaking workshop from 5 to 6 p.m. led by UM Professor Elizabeth Dove. A presentation by Portland, Oregonbased art collector and art lender Jordan D. Schnitzer will follow from 6 to 6:45 p.m.

Additional programming in conjunction with the exhibition will include a panel discussion, 5:30 to 7 p.m in the Masquer Theatre, Friday, October 21. Curator of Art Jeremy Canwell will present a lecture about the exhibition in the Masquer Theatre on Thursday, November 3, 7 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

MMAC docents are looking forward to sharing this exhibit with others. To schedule a docent tour for your group, call 243-2019. Special public docent tours will be given at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 7 and Thursday, December 8. These special tours require no reservations or advance notice. Just come and enjoy the beauty and power and whimsy of Present Tense.

Symphony Cycling for the

eptember is a big month for the Missoula Symphony Association. First is the biggest fundraiser of the year, the Ovando Gran Fondo, and next is the opening of the 2016/17 season with a concert playfully titled “Fast Machine.” “We just had a fantastic Symphony in the Park,” says Music Director Darko Butorac, “I’m excited to continue the momentum with a fantastic September and season as a

whole.”

The Ovando Gran Fondo, now in its fifth year, is a 55 or 37 mile cross or mountain bike ride. It begins and ends in Ovando, and winds through some of western Montana’s most scenic countryside, much of which is on private land. “Cyclists couldn’t do this ride on their own, which is definitely part of the appeal,” says ride director, Beth Woody. “Ranch owners, the Blackfoot Challenge, the Nature Conservancy and other conservation groups have been very generous and supportive in allowing us to bike through their properties.”

Missoula Symphony’s executive director John Driscoll says he’s excited to offer such a unique opportunity. “I think it really says something for this community that a bike ride can be a fundraiser for a symphony orchestra. We get people of all ages, the spread was 11 to 81 last year, and riders just love it. It’s challenging, but not so challenging that with a little training, anyone who sets their mind to it could do it.” The ride is fully supported with breakfast, lunch, a post-ride barbecue, and aid/water stations throughout. “One of the elements riders love is the musicians playing along the way — there’s nothing better than coming across a surprise string quartet in the middle of a field. We’re unique — we offer riders an experience they won’t find anywhere else.”

Main St. September also marks the start of the season, with the opening concerts taking place on September 24 and 25. The concert, titled “Fast Machine,” is aptly named as the first two pieces, John Adams’ “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”, and Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 are very fast moving. “We’re starting the season like a race horse out of the gates!” says Butorac.

The concert will feature American violinist Jennifer Frautschi playing Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto. According to Butorac, this piece is a chance for the violinist to demonstrate the rich colors of the instrument. “Jennifer Frautschi is a perfect fit for this,” he says.

The second half of the concert in contrast to machines, is that of nature, specifically water. It begins with the moody romantic musical description of the Hebrides by Felix Mendelssohn. The Scottish Isles are battered by water and wind, and surrounded by legend, which is reflected in the piece. The concert ends with another water themed piece, the most famous musical ode to the sea, Claude Debussy’s La Mer. According to Butorac, the piece is not merely a depiction of an ocean in music, but a peek into Debussy’s turbulent spirit. Come hear for yourself.

MSO’s season premiere takes place on Saturday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, September 25, at 3 p.m. in the Dennison Theatre on the University of Montana campus. hen University of Montana piano faculty members Christopher Hahn and Steven Hesla first conceived of the Celebrate Piano Series, they wanted to expand the opportunities the community had to hear excellent piano music. Now in its fifth year, the series has grown to a five-concert line-up; this year will feature two Pianissimo! shows, a preeminent piano quartet, a local darling, and an internationally renowned husband-and-wife pianist team. “The talent out there, both locally and nationally, is outstanding. We are lucky enough to be well connected in the piano community and we’re able to bring in fantastic musicians, in addition to utilizing the talent we have locally,” he says.

The season starts on October 14 and 15 with Pianissimo! Now in its ninth season.

Hahn describes Pianissimo! as a Missoula original. “It has achieved its popularity with good reason,” he says. “It’s a fun-filled, high-energy evening of music that crosses all genres and involves multiple pianos played by 25 pianists. We definitely go all out on this one. It’s basically a variety show that features the incredible diversity of the piano and its performers.” The pair of concerts features piano solos, duets, trios, quartets, and as many as 16 pianists performing on eight different pianos. “It’s quite a sound. The coordination of such a feat is pretty tremendous — you really have to see and hear it to believe it,” says Hahn. Included in the concerts will be a wide variety of music and styles ranging from Mozart and Stravinsky to Copland and Coldplay, as well as other popular hits. “The program is designed to please any and all audience members,” he says. The pianists include students, faculty members and familiar faces from the community. “Let’s just say I always like a few surprises and you might see a local politician or two in the mix.”

Next up is the American Piano Quartet, which Hahn describes as “the original and preeminent quartet.” Founded in 1984, the touring foursome has had dozens of arrangements written specifically for them, creating a modern-day body of repertoire in the process. “With two pianos and eight hands, the sound is truly symphonic,” he says. The audience can expect popular and familiar pieces as well as classical and traditional. “They’ve played in Missoula before to a fantastic response. Last time, we were able to get Andie MacDowell to conduct for them — we’re seeing if Ms. MacDowell is free again.”

The fourth concert in the series is local favorite, Barbara Blegen. Piano faculty member Steven Hesla describes Blegen as a “flawless pianist.” “Chris and I joke that we haven’t heard her miss a note in ten years. She’s beloved in this community, and people just love what she brings to music.” Blegen, who was a professional musician before her retirement to Missoula, played with the New York Philharmonic, St. Louis and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras.

The final concert of the season is one that is near and dear to Hahn’s heart. “When I was a kid growing up in Brantford, Ontario, my piano teacher for 14 years was a wonderful woman named Virginia. Her daughter, who was my piano idol, went on to train at the Juilliard School and concertize all over the world. I was star-struck, and inspired.” When Virginia died last fall, Hahn decided to reconnect with her daughter, Bernadene, and invited her and her husband, Kevin, to be a part of the Celebrate Piano Series. “This concert is a tribute to Bernie’s mom, who was my piano mom, really. I am so thrilled they agreed to come. Missoula is incredibly lucky to be able to see Bernadene Blaha and Kevin Fitz-Gerald in concert. They are highly in-demand pianists,” he says.

Art House Theater Day

he Roxy Theater will join cinemas nationwide this month to celebrate the cultural and community growth that art house movie theaters provide.

Art House Theater Day, conceived by the Art House Convergence, an international consortium of community-based, mission-driven movie theaters, will take place nationwide on Saturday, Sept. 24. The day is designed to celebrate the legacy of independent theaters as advocates for cinematic art and as nurturing environments for adventurous audiences, independent productions, and the incredible diversity of original filmmaking. Every participating theater’s celebration will be a unique reflection of the community the theater represents.

“Art House Theater Day is a chance to show film-lovers that their local theaters are part of a larger cultural movement,” event co-founder Gabriel Chicoine said. “These cinemas are not passive, insular venues — they are passion-driven institutions that collaborate with distributors, filmmakers, and each other to deepen film appreciation and to increase the diversity and artistic integrity of what you see on the big screen.”

Many of today’s most successful filmmakers and actors got their start in independent and art house films. Directors such as Kathryn Bigelow, Wes Anderson, Spike Lee and Paul Thomas Anderson saw their first films debut on indie screens and innumerable stars including Tilda Swinton, Tom Hardy and Jennifer Lawrence established themselves in art houses before attaining superstardom.

Much like Record Store Day and Comic Book Day offer special day-of wares for purchase, Art House Theater Day offers special screenings for patrons. The inaugural

event at The Roxy will showcase a 2K restoration of Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” and a 4K restoration of Don Coscarelli’s “Phantasm: Remastered.”

Gilliam himself supervised the restoration of Time Bandits, a gloriously imaginative fantasy about a young boy whose bedroom is invaded by a band of time-traveling thieves. The 1981 film stars John Cleese as Robin Hood, Ian Holm as Napoleon Bonaparte and Sean Connery as Agamemnon. Gilliam calls Time Bandits the first entry in his “Trilogy of Imagination,” three films about the “craziness of our awkwardly ordered society and the desire to escape it through whatever means possible.”

For Coscarelli, screening “Phantasm” during the celebrations feels appropriate.

“When I made “Phantasm” three decades ago, the term ‘indie’ didn’t have the same positive connotations that it does today,” the director told Entertainment Weekly. “But that’s what “Phantasm” was. And in the decades since, the art house movement has cultivated an appreciation for independent films that break molds and push boundaries.

That’s why it doesn’t surprise me that in 2016, art houses have embraced “Phantasm” and are giving it new life on Art House Theater Day. It’s really a dream come true to see it playing in so many exceptional theaters on the big screen, the way I originally intended.”

Recent elections in Cormorant, Minnesota, resulted in an overwhelming win for Duke, a 9-year-old Great Pyrenees, as mayor of the small town. “Everybody voted for Duke, except for one vote for his girlfriend, Lassie,” said David Rick, Duke’s Owner. The canine candidate initially won by write-in vote three years ago and repeated his victory in this year’s round of voting. (WDAY)

The widow of Hunter S. Thompson, Anita Thompson, recently made amends to a fellow literary family by returning a pair of elk antlers that H. S. Thompson had stolen from Ernest Hemingway in 1964. The manly décor was taken from Hemingway’s home in Ketchum, Idaho, when Thompson visited the location for a story about the former writer’s legacy. As Thompson left the empty home, he snagged the antlers as a memento.

Intending to return them via road trip, the journey was never realized, and postponed

by Thompson’s suicide in 2005, until Anita’s recent determination to make things right.

Seven pit bull dogs and their guardian were left injured after an attack by an aggressive cat in Victoria, Canada. According to the woman walking the dogs, the cat sprung from nearby bushes and launched into full-on attack mode without provocation.
