Here’s how to ride free, and recycle in Missoula

rom recycling to taking the bus or biking, sustainability is a way of life in Missoula, but getting started can be a daunting task.

So here’s a primer on how to save the planet (and get around town without a car).

For new students, campus is the starting place to find food, recreation, new friends and even recycling.

The University of Montana has recycling bins scattered across campus, mostly near residence halls and outside the University Center. The university recycles white and pastel colored paper, magazines, newspaper, plastic bottles, and aluminum and tin cans, according to the UM recycling guide, available on their website.

Cardboard can be recycled in large bins behind Knowles and Craig Halls and the library, or it can be broken down and left between bins at any recycling location. Plastic bottles must have lids removed and can only be #1 (PETE) or uncolored #2 (HDPE).

A Republic Services recycling center is located at 3207 W. Broadway, near North Reserve Street, for

students who live off campus, or in case of any extra recycling needs.

Recycling glass can be tough in Missoula, but there are options for the devoted recycler. Glass can be recycled at the Target store on North Reserve, in bins located near the store entrance.

Recyclers are asked to turn in clean bottles with no lids, corks or other material, to prevent contamination.

Bayern Brewery runs an ecoleague program that allows residents to return standard brown bottles in a Bayern ecopack box for a refund. Bottles with embossing or screw tops are not accepted. Bayern offers 5 cents for each bottle returned to the brewery, according to its website, and exchanges the ecopack, which can be returned at any time for a full refund.

ransportation in Missoula can be a breeze, even without a car. The city and university both offer options for free and cheap transportation, including buses, bicycle rentals and trails to help travel from one place to another.

All buses in Missoula are free to ride, anytime, anywhere, although none run on Sunday.

2015-16 Bear Necessities UDASH, which is owned and run by the Associated Students of the University of Montana, runs five colorcoordinated lines to student housing, off-campus parking lots, downtown and several other destinations, according to ASUM Transportation’s website.

All UDASH buses stop on campus and at several places along their routes, making them useful for students living near a line.

Bus tracking is available by visiting the UDASH website or at bus stops by texting stop-specific codes to learn what buses are coming in the next few minutes. The Gold Line runs downtown at night and on the weekends, but like all UDASH buses, it only runs during school, not on breaks or days off.

The university also offers students several bike rental options, ranging from free, single-speed UBikes, which are available to rent for up to two days at the front desk of Mansfield Library, to semester-long rentals from the Office of Transportation.

The ASUM Office of Transportation’s semester rental prices range from $40 to $60, depending on the model. All bikes come with lights, lock, helmet and maintenance during the rental. Bicycles can be reserved online or in the ASUM offices in the University Center.

The city of Missoula runs the Mountain Line bus

3 system, which covers 14 routes crisscrossing the city, from the airport to the mall and into the South Hills.

All buses have bike racks on the front and many lines offer 15-minute BOLT! service. Mountain Line offers bus tracking through an app, available on iPhone and Android.

Cyclists can make use of Mountain Line’s bike repair stations, which include a bike stand with tools attached, an air compressor and a vending machine with spare parts and healthy snacks. Bike stations are on campus (behind the Liberal Arts building), as well as at Lewis and Clark Villages, Southgate Mall, Missoula Public Library and the downtown Mountain Line transfer center.

issoula’s riverfront trail system can be useful for getting around town without dealing with traffic.

Running along both sides of the Clark Fork River, the trails run from campus to downtown Missoula and the south side hooks up with the Milwaukee Trail, which runs all the way to Reserve Street.

There are two pedestrian bridges near campus, the Van Buren Street Bridge and the Madison Street footbridge, which connect with the riverfront trails.

Unique Missoula

History, Culture, Downtown, Parks, Trails

I

n 1860, C.P. Higgins and Francis Worden built a trading post they called Hell Gate along the Mullan Road west of present-day Missoula, taking advantage of an almost empty stretch of the welltraveled route.

The post was successful and Higgins and Worden expanded a few years later, building a flour and sawmill next to the Clark Fork River in what is now downtown Missoula.

Thus began the city of Missoula 150 years ago, said Nicole Brown, the curator of collections for the Historic Museum at Fort Missoula.

“Missoula’s pretty much been a business town since its inception,” Brown said. Higgins and Worden led the town, with sharp minds for industry critically shaping Missoula’s history.

Downtown is the best example of this history, Brown said. Higgins and Worden were able to bring in big businesses to a small area, making Missoula a

hub for the entire state. It remains Montana’s secondlargest city, behind only Billings.

Businesses like the Missoula Mercantile helped Missoula grow, along with the jobs the mills provided.

Brown said this growth made further expansion possible.

“Though downtown was really the center, neighborhoods spiraled out around [it],” Brown said. “People were able to be prosperous away from downtown.”

Fort Missoula was built on the outskirts of town in 1877, after townspeople requested protection from potential Indian conflicts, according to Fort Missoula’s website. The fort brought many contracts and jobs for local residents, and was the starting point for the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps in 1888.

The fort was decommissioned in 1947 and now houses the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula, as well as a military museum and the offices of various state and federal agencies.

owntown is still a central part of the city, Brown said, which reflects the original industry-minded founding of Missoula. “I think you can still feel that today,” she said.

Full of restaurants, bars, clubs and art galleries, downtown Missoula thrives, even when there’s a foot of snow on the ground.

The Oxford Saloon was started in 1883 and has been open 24/7 for so many years that there are supposedly no longer any keys to the doors.

Worden’s Market, Missoula’s first grocery store, specializes in a diverse wine, beer and food selection, as well as a full-service deli.

Today, Missoula spirals far from downtown, reaching the South Hills and into the Rattlesnake Valley. Hundreds of acres of city parks and many trails keep recreationists comfortable in the city limits.

The locally famous “M” trail on Mount Sentinel starts on the University of Montana campus and winds its way up to the concrete emblem, put in place in 1968, though a letter first appeared on the mountainside in 1908.

issoula is also home to the Boone and Crockett Club’s national headquarters, located in the Old Milwaukee train depot near the Higgins Avenue Bridge.

The club, founded in 1887 by future president Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist George Bird Grinnell, created the first big-game scoring and recordkeeping, and is devoted to the practice of ethical, sustainable hunting, according to the club’s website.

The headquarters, occupied by the club in 1993, displays a few current and former world-record bears, sheep, deer and even a yak.

For camping and larger spaces to play, the Lolo National Forest adjoins Missoula in three different places: Pattee Canyon, Blue Mountain and the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area, giving outdoorsy types access to miles of trails for day hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding.

Located just 15 miles north of Missoula, the Flathead Reservation extends over 1.2 million acres.

The reservation covers about half of Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the West, and features Salish language translations on road signs and markers.

The lake itself is only about an hour from Missoula, making for a reasonable day trip or weekend camping.

Missoula Live Music Scene

Sunbaked streets to bar basements: Catch a live show in Missoula

S

ummer in Missoula is full of opportunities to get outside, get together with friends and experience live music.

Even though the season is winding down, there are still a few warm weeks left and plenty of festivals and concerts in the Missoula area to keep anyone satisfied.

Whether it’s a concert this fall or a festival next summer, here’s where to find hot live music in Missoula.

Missoula’s tenth River City Roots Fest takes place on August 28-29 in Caras Park and on Main Street and features two days of music, food, activities and family fun.

The event is scheduled the weekend of the first Griz football game and the start of school, so visitors and new students alike can experience Missoula, Linda McCarthy, executive director of the Missoula Downtown Association, said.

The festival is a great way for parents of new students to familiarize themselves with the town their kids will live in for the next few years.

“We want University of Montana students to know their community and downtown is the place to get to know your community,” McCarthy said.

The emphasis on art and music is what sets Missoula apart from other towns in Montana, McCarthy said. The festival enhances that by having an open, friendly atmosphere, without gates or admission fees.

8 2015-16 Bear Necessities “There’s no one checking your purse to see if you’re carrying something you shouldn’t be carrying,” McCarthy said.

Out to Lunch and Downtown Tonight take over downtown Missoula every summer for weekly concerts with food and beer vendors.

Out to Lunch takes place every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. until August 26. Downtown Tonight follows on Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. until September 10, according to the Missoula Downtown Association website.

Every year, Big Sky Brewing Co. opens its grounds for a summer concert series, drawing huge crowds for the Decemberists, Barenaked Ladies, Modest Mouse, Gregg Allman and many more. This year’s series ends on September 9, with Primus’ Willy Wonka-themed tour, Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble.

ear-round venues include the Adams Center and Dennison Theatre on the UM campus, the Wilma Theatre, the Top Hat, Zootown Arts Community Center and Stage 112, though most bars in town offer live music, making it easy to find a show almost every night of the year, especially for those 18 and older.

This year, the Adams Center, the largest indoor concert space in Missoula, welcomes indie-rock group Death Cab for Cutie, Christian-rockers the Newsboys and Five Finger Death Punch with Papa Roach, and many others. Tickets are available online, at umt.edu/ griztix, or at the Adams Center box office.

One of the most famous buildings in Missoula, The Wilma Theatre, is currently closed for renovations after it came under new ownership last spring, but plans to open strong on October 5, with a show from Southern psych-rock group My Morning Jacket, which is sold out.

Plans for the remodeled theater include movable seating, a reconfigured lobby and a new sound system.

Located in Missoula’s Elks Lodge, Stage 112 has two different venues to welcome acts Tuesday through Saturday every week, since they added the Real Lounge downstairs about a year ago to their existing room.

This fall, Stage 112 has booked Canadian indierockers Of Montreal and comedian Todd Barry, known for his work on Louie and Flight of the Conchords, as well as a long career as a stand-up.

The Zootown Arts Community Center, or ZACC, offers only all-ages shows in its basement venue, as an alternative to age-restricted bar shows.

“We’re trying to concentrate on serving a broader audience,” Kia Liszak, executive director of ZACC said.

The venue, which is currently open during renovations, holds shows throughout the year, and this fall monthly shows sponsored by the college radio station KBGA and Missoula Community Radio will begin, Liszak said.

Open mic nights are a bar and college town staple, a chance to get up in front of friends and peers to impress them with your soulful, artistic side and strumming skills.

Plenty of chances to get onstage exist in Missoula and most open mic nights are only 18-plus.

On campus, the University of Montana holds an open mic every month in the University Center Atrium.

For those looking to laugh, the Union Club hosts a comedy open mic night the first Thursday of every month.

T

he Blackstone Launchpad was created to help University of Montana students pursue entrepreneurship opportunities, in other words, to help them grow ideas into workable businesses.

The Launchpad provides students, alumni and staff with the resources to pursue entrepreneurship as a viable path.

Experts at the Launchpad can help would-be entrepreneurs grow ideas of any size, whether they came up with a concept an hour ago or have thought about it for years, by providing consultation and bringing in outside resources like legal, marketing, insurance and sales specialists.

Advocating a lean startup philosophy, the Launchpad focuses on identifying the problem being solved by an idea, what pains and gains are around that problem and what will be gained from creating a business from an idea.

One successful business that once sat on the Launchpad is The Dram Shop, a growler fill station and tap room located in downtown Missoula.

The Launchpad was able to help the Dram Shop with financial needs and provide introductions to banks, according to UM Launchpad manager Jennifer Stephens.

The University of Montana’s Launchpad has been open for 18 months and has already had 400 students register with over 200 business ventures.

The UM Launchpad is one of two Blackstone organizations in the state, with the other being on the Montana State University campus. There are Launchpads in 15 campuses across six states.

The Launchpad is funded by the Blackstone charitable foundation which means that there are no fees associated with seeking help for a startup business.

“Working with Blackstone is not any kind of a contract for people to give up part of their business,” Stephens said.

The Launchpad currently has four part-time student employees, two full-time employees and are looking to hire another full-time person for marketing.

“I think we will definitely see an uptick in registration when we hire a marketing person,” Stephens said.

ooking for a quick and easy bite?

Missoula is full of cheap eats geared toward broke college students or those on the go.

The downtown area features a handful of burrito and taco spots, including El Diablo at Beckwith and Higgins Avenue, Taco Sano at Fourth and Higgins and Taco Del Sol at Higgins and Pine.

All three offer the classic quick-eat burritos and tacos, with Taco Sano boasting massive quesadillas and Taco Del Sol serving a selection of adult beverages.

For those looking for something a little more exotic, Five on Black features Brazilian rice dishes that are cheap, fast and guaranteed to fill even the biggest eater. Be sure to grab an extra cheese bread.

Another unique Missoula eatery is The Empanada Joint on Main and Higgins.

The Empanada Joint mixes local ingredients with traditional Argentinean cooking to produce empanadas your taste buds and wallet will both love.

11 Bridge Pizza is a Missoula classic offering new varieties of pizza daily, as well as salads, soups, pasta and burritos. Make sure to hit them at happy hour between 3 and 5, when you can get a free half pint of local beer with the purchase of a slice of pizza or a full pint with the purchase of two slices.

For those looking to spend a bit more time enjoying their meal, the Top Hat offers classic lunch and dinner fare like burgers, salads and tacos, as well as less traditional dishes like green curry mussels, Asian ribs, and chicken and waffles.

The Top Hat can be found on Front Street and serves food from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

If you don’t mind shelling out a few more dollars for a meal, Sa-Wa-Dee offers a variety of curries, soups, and rice and noodle dishes from Thailand.

It is located at 221 W. Broadway and is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5-9 p.m. for dinner.

Ciao Mambo, on the corner of Higgins and Fourth, serves some of the best Italian food in Missoula in large portions.

It offers dishes such as Antipasti Freddi, “a combination of provolone, fresh reggiano, prosciutto di parma, sopressata salami, olives, peppers, herbs and oil;” Bocconcini Fritti, “fried fresh mozzarella balls with spicy marinara;” and Volare All’ Gorgonzola, “spicy chicken wings served with a gorgonzola dill dipping sauce.”

Craft Lecture: Tom Bissell

Szybist most recently wrote “Incarnadine,” winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Poetry. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center and the Witter Bynner Foundation in conjunction with the Library of Congress. Her first book “Granted” was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and winner of the GLCA New Writers Award. She lives in Portland, Oregon where she teaches at Lewis & Clark College. National Tour: “First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare”

All day, May 9-31, Montana Museum of Art & Culture. The First Folio is the first complete collected edition of William Shakespeare’s plays, published in 1623 seven years after his death. Compiled by two of Shakespeare’s fellow actors, it preserves 36 of Shakespeare’s plays.

Without it, we would not have 18 of those plays, including “Macbeth,” “Julius Caesar,” “Twelfth Night,” “The Tempest” and “Antony and Cleopatra.” The MMAC will be the only location in Montana to display the folio during its tour around the country.
