Disagreement over recruiting practices helped create what is now known as the Southwest Casey Stengel League. Back in those daj'll ( 1969), the sendpro te&n5 in the Pacii'ic Northwest operated under the American Amateur Baseball Congress, Stan Musial Division, That year dis agreement arose over recruiting boundriee between the Northwest and Southlfest divi.e ione of the Stan Musial League, It was final Jy resolved in 1970 by splitting the league into two separate ent ities, thus establishing the Soutbweet League and its counterpart the Western Inter national league. For the Iirst two years the SWL continued to operate under the AABC ae a Stan Musial League with the Burien studa capturing the crown in 1970 and Puyallup Heidel berg and Bre1111rton 1 e Outside Inn tying for the title in 1971, The Outside Inn won the league's poet-season playoff-otherwise known as the AABC Pacific Regional Tournament--and traveled to Battle Creek, Mich., for the nationals where they were owsted in two straight contests. The 1972 season saw Billings Electric of Tacoma capture the league title. However, :In the AABC Pacific Regional Tournament, the Kitsap Outsiders (Formerly the Outside 1M of Bremerton) emerged victorious end went to Battle Creek for the second straight tiJDe. For Fisher, named the Most Valuable Playt,r of the Tournament, alld subsequently the state Is top amateur player, it was a disappointment.

"Bob" Fiaher

The tireless Outsider had completed an amazing week of pitching during which he worked JS Ira.mes, winning three games and losing one. His tournament i'eat, which probably will be remelll bered for some time to come, was even more amazing when you consider the difficulties Fisher had that weekend. For one thing, Fisher thought the Outsiders·second tournament game start.,.rl a.n hour later than it did. He was scheduled to pitch Saturday's contest against Centralia, in the loser's bracket and his arrval at the park coincided with the start of the game. 11 I got there just as it started," Fi6her explained, "and then I realized I left shoes home. So I had to borrow a pair from Paul Ketvirtis, which were one size to big. 11

By Terry Mosher Sun Sports Writer The ·only mistake Bob "Catfish" Fisher made in last year's State Casey Stengel Tournament was that he took lwnself out of the title game. "We were ahead by two runs (J-1), so l took myself out so as to not tire my self out," Fisher explained. "Ii' we would had won that game against the Burien Adairs I was going to pitch the next one.11 That reasoning was sound. By now most observers who saw the Kitsap Outsider pitch during the four-team state affair in Centralia's Fort Borst Park, would have believed Fisher could do anything, short of walking on water. Fisher achieved immortality, of sorts, by winning two tournament games that day, throwing l8 innings in les11 than 24 hours. The .former University of Puget Sound. flinger never got the chance to pitch another inning, however because Cary Thomsen of the Adairs made his team the state champion, 5-4, with a solo home ?'W1 off Jim Spencer in the 10th inning ot the Title contest. (NarE: Cary Thomsen is now with the Kitsap Outsiders)

1 grabbed his shoes and with no warmup at all, I just ran O!!t on the f"ield and started the game'! he said. Oversized shoes and all, Fisher went on to blank Centrali.a., 1-0, scattering eight hits. Discarding Ketvirtis' shoes in favor of his white hush puppies, Fisher came back in 5-l/J inning relief role less than an hour later to notch his second victory that day, 6-5, over St John's of the Bi-State League. "Ketvirtis was in pitching be fore I went in and I didn't want to change shoes right there, so I said the heck with it; the hush puppies were confortable," remem bers Fisher. Fittingly, Fisher knocked in the winning run against St. John's, a single down t.he le.ft-field line in the 11th frame. As Fisher cros sed first base, the St. John's first baseman said, "I think I'll get same of those shoes for my self." 11That I a the last hit I have gotten too..• ! haven't gotten one hit this year," fisher related. BI-STATE IEAGUE: •.........•...... .. Dozens of towns have fielded teams in leagues playing under such names as Blue Mountain, Okan.ogen Valley, Columbia Basin and Yakima Valley. The sole survivor on the senior amateur level - is the BI-State League. The BSL 1 s la.at major revieion cama in 1971 vhen the BI--5tate and Yakima Valley league amalgamated. Last eeaeon the league affiliated with CSABA and eant Saint John, its champion, to the CSAB.A at.ate tournament in Centralia. Bi-Stats vaa adopted ae the league name about eight yea.re ago vhan L&Grand11, Ore. joined. Revival of leB8'-le plJly had begun in the early 19508 after an interruption caused by World War II, Godfrey Smith ie one. of the nmnee long aaeociated vith baseball in Southeastern Waahington, He was the driving force behind the Richl.a.nd Herchante an:! served as league president for many years - until he retired tram rai.lroad1ng and baseball 1.ast year. Joe Hedges, Richland Manager, presides over the BSL. Charlie AJmaDzl\, Pasco is vice president and Denny Grant, Siµinyaide, eecretary-treasurer. LaOrande, Walla Walla, Richland and Sunnyside, all earned championehip honors be fore Saint John earned another championship last year. Managed and eponaored by Bob Jones, the Spekane-area team made a good impre11eion and a solid contribution to the 1973 state tournament, liter winning its opener 2-1 from. the Kitsap Outsiders, Saint John pushed Adair's (the eventual champion) to a bottom-of-the- ninth h011111r by Ken Wll,ite (returning this year ae the Cheney Studs catcher) before losing an 8-5 decision and then dropped an 11-inning thriller 6-5 to the Outsiders. Four Saint John pers made the tournament all-atar team. Sound entries from the llSL - where a 40 game league schedule of Satl.lJ'da3 and Sunday doubleheaders seems to work the best - can be expected every year •••••••• , • Ellensburg, managed by Jim Tinnell, and Richland, with Hedges at the bellll should be n.o exce nt .◄ on. , ,. .NOTE:,I The Dynasties picture on opposite page was rrinted prior to play-offs between Dynasties Restaurant of Tacoma and the Kelso Pavers of Kelso, which was won by the Pavers.
