Welcome to our production of The Essgee's Pirates of Penzance'!

We are thrilled to present this lively, fun-filled version of Gilbert and Sullivan's beloved comic operetta, brought to life with the energetic and modern twist of the Essgee production.

This journey would not have been possible without the incredible support of so many talented and dedicated individuals. These have been listed in this program and we thank them for all of their assistance, sweat and hard work. Specifically, I would like to extend my gratitude to our exceptional creative team. In every sense of the word, it is a TEAM - helping each other and stepping in when needed seamlessly. We are so very lucky to have talented leaders in this space. Thank you to Nerida Eckert for her brilliant musical direction, Shannon Tamblyn for her direction and creative vision, Jameille Eugarde for her stunning choreography, Anne Gralow for her musicianship providing us the music for us to sing and dance every day, Shideh Faramand for lending us her expertise in theatre, working with our students on their character development, Lily Foran for her experience in stage managing that makes the performance run smoothly and to Craig Brittan who has stepped in in so many areas – communicating with students and parents, setting the stage for us at each rehearsal, keeping us up to date and on track and doing anything asked of him. Your vision, passion, and tireless efforts have been the driving force behind this production .We thank Dianne Will who so ably looks after the Performing Arts staff and students and who jumps into playing whatever instrumental part we need at the time.

Simon Lees It is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to all of you for our school's production of Essgee's 'Pirates of Penzance'. This delightful and timeless musical promises to be an extraordinary experience, filled with humour, memorable music, and impressive performances.

This musical is particularly special to me, having spent much of my younger days playing in real pirate coves near Penzance in Cornwall. Penzance, or *Pen Sans* in Cornish, means "Holy Headland.”

Our students and staff have worked diligently to bring this production to life, and I am incredibly proud of their dedication and creativity. I would like to thank our Directorial Team of Trina Faint, Shannon Gralow and Shideh Faramand and Musical Director Nerida Eckert for their leadership of the Secondary Musical. The musical not only showcases their

talent but also exemplifies the spirit of teamwork and perseverance that our school values so highly.

I invite you to immerse yourself in the whimsical world of pirates, swashbuckling adventures, and clever wordplay. As we gather to enjoy this wonderful performance, let us celebrate the achievements of our students and staff and the vibrant culture of our school community.

Synopsis Our story begins as Frederic, a young man with an unswerving sense of duty, is about to reach his 21st birthday and conclude his long apprenticeship to the infamous Pirates of Penzance. His good-hearted but hard-of-hearing nursemaid Ruth reveals that she has made a most disastrous mistake. When Frederic was just a boy she misunderstood her employer’s directive and apprenticed him to a pirate instead of a pilot, as intended. Frederic tells the Pirate King (a dashing figure who never preys on orphans since he himself has had the misfortune to be one) that his freedom will be devoted to exterminating all pirates and that it would be better for the pirates to leave before midnight when his indentures are over. The pirates depart immediately and Frederic is left alone with Ruth, the only woman he has seen in years. Ruth pleads with Frederic to take her with him, but her case is lost when a bevy of very young, attractive women appear.

unpunished since her father, the guardian of all of these young ladies, holds the exalted rank of Major-General.

The Major-General is forced to pretend that he is also an orphan in order to win their sympathy. Although he fools the Pirate King, the Major-General cannot rest easy with his troubled conscience. Meanwhile, Frederic is launching an attack on the pirates with the cowardly assistance of the police. But Ruth and the Pirate King interrupt him with a most ingenious paradox - Frederic was born in leap year on the 29th of February and, in terms of actual birthdays, is only 5 instead of 21.

Frederic, slave of duty that he is, rejoins his former associates, and the police are left to attack the pirates on their own.

Frederic appeals to the girls to overlook his pirate apparel and his past profession, but no one will listen until the beauteous Mabel appears. Frederic and Mabel fall in love instantly. The pirates return and Mabel warns them that their actions will not go

Ruth then reveals that the pirates are actually ‘noblemen who have gone wrong’. Mabel and Frederic are happily united forever with the unqualified blessings of the Major-General.

The Pirates seize the Major-General and the police are quickly defeated. But the Sergeant of Police charges them to yield ‘in Queen Victoria’s name’ and the pirates cannot resist this overpowering appeal.
