I hope that this year has been a year of learning and growing for you all, and that you look back on the year at Tabor with fondness and feel that you have learnt much!

The season of Advent is always a good time to sit and reflect on what has gone on in our lives in the past year; some bad but I hope for you all, mostly good. For me reflecting on the birth of Christ is a time when I feel the closeness of God in my life.

The celebration on Christmas day with my Church family is a special celebration of thankfulness.

I hope that you are all able to join in with your Church or visit a place where you can participate in the joy of celebrating the birth of our Saviour!

Congratulations to those of you who have completed your studies this year. I look forward to celebrating this with you at the Graduation Ceremony next year. For those of you who are continuing with your studies next year please have a wonderful Christmas holiday; relax with friends and family and rejuvenate for another assault of those books in 2013!

May your Christmas be blessed and may you once again experience the wonder of the birth of Christ!

You Can Be An Angel of Hope This Christmas This year, Tabor Adelaide, have decided to support Anglicare’s Christmas Pantry. Anglicare SA is seeking to help families who are struggling this Christmas. Tabor would like to help Anglicare make the festive season a time of hope for all people in Adelaide, and to bring a brighter New Year to the unemployed, the homeless, the suffering and children in care.

The Tabor Adelaide Christmas tree was trimmed and decorated in anticipation for the charity drive and the response has been great!

Thank you to all those from the Tabor community who have donated so far. Your contributions, together can create a big impact.

There is still time to donate! Contributions can be made up until December the 14th and would be gratefully accepted. Why do we need to care for God’s Creation?

• We are faced with a crisis that is pressing, urgent, and that must be resolved in our generation ... Love for God, our neighbours and the wider creation, as well as our passion for justice, compel us to “urgent and prophetic ecological responsibility” (Cape Town Commitment 1.7.A).

Based on the above two convictions, we, at this Lausanne Consultation, therefore call the whole church, in dependence on the Holy Spirit, to respond radically and faithfully to care for God’s creation, demonstrating our belief and hope in the transforming power of Christ. We call on the Lausanne Movement, evangelical leaders, national evangelical organisations, and all local churches to respond urgently at the personal, community, national and international levels.

What do these women from Australia, Uganda, Peru, England, New Zealand, the USA, Singapore, Kenya, India, Trinidad and Tobago all have in common? They are all trying to work out what it means to care for God’s world in the very different contexts in which we live.

This group was a part of a gathering of theologians, church leaders, scientists and creation care practitioners, which included fifty-seven men and women from twenty–six countries from the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Latin America, Oceania, North America and Europe. We met under the auspices of the Lausanne Movement in collaboration with the World Evangelical Alliance. It was hosted by a country and region of outstanding natural beauty, where we enjoyed, celebrated and reflected on the wonder of God’s good creation.

Many Biblical passages, including reflections on Genesis 1-3, Psalm 8 and Romans 8, informed our prayers, discussions and deliberations on the themes of God’s World, God’s Word and God’s Work. Our consultation immediately followed Hurricane Sandy’s devastation of the Caribbean and coincided with that storm’s arrival in North America: the destruction and loss of life was a startling reminder as to the urgency, timeliness and importance of this Consultation.

The idea for our consultation was to develop a more deeply biblical understanding of creation care and point the way to how the Evangelical church around the world can pick up this mantle with the seriousness and urgency that is needed. This led us to two primary conclusions: • Creation care is indeed a “gospel issue within the Lordship of Christ”. Tabor Adelaide Student and Graduate Get Creative!

Tabor Adelaide Creative Writing students and graduates continue to achieve great things in the literary world and we think their achievements are worth celebrating!

Current Tabor Adelaide Creative Writing student, Sharon Kretschmer has had another children’s story accepted for publication by School Magazine. The story is called ‘Pinned wings’, and is the third story of Sharon’s which the School Magazine has published. The other two, previously published, were ‘Fishy’ and ‘Cereal Pest’. ‘Pinned Wings’ will appear in the March/April issue in 2013.

Tabor Adelaide MA graduand, Valerie Volk has also released a new verse novel called Even Grimmer Tales. It was launched recently

by Roger Goldsworthy and copies are now available in all good bookstores.

Tabor Student Called To Prison Chaplaincy There have been students from many different backgrounds and ministries at Tabor College but very few If any are or have been prison chaplains. Case de Bruyn who is currently Involved in the Master of Divinity studies, works at the high security Yatala Labour prison, Pre-release Centre. This ministry is multi-faith and comprises both employed and volunteer chaplains. He is employed part time with Baptist Care.

Yatala is the biggest prison in the State with roughly 500 men held within its walls. Approximately 50% of prisoners have not been sentenced as they are on remand waiting to be tried. So what do you say to a prisoner who will never be released? Or minister to the prisoner who is still on remand, has not been sentenced and has been in high security for the last 18 months?

Case answers the questions by quoting, Selwyn Hughes. “A Welsh author and Christian Minister once told the story that a person came to him and asked ‘Can you help me from this very dark place?’

After some thought Selwyn said, ‘I can’t help you get out of this darkness, but I can help get the darkness out of you!”

Prisons are dark places. Mental illness, abuse and dysfunction are all part of the scene, and sadly some prisoners have been incarcerated or institutionalized most of their lives. Families don’t visit and normal family function has never been experienced. Can you imagine being locked up 23 hours a day, not having walked through a garden or smelt flowers for many years? For some inmates this is a reality.

Case conducts church services approximately twice per month, and visits prisoners regularly. Case knows that Christ’s death on the cross is unconditional and that there are no shadows or corners in God’s grace. Christ’s work is perfect and this is the good news of the gospel that needs to be heard within prison walls.

Besides his studies and visiting and relating to prisoners, Case also works with churches to provide soft landings for prisoners upon release. Currently the number of people entering prisons is growing faster than the State’s population. This fact only fuels his calling to the church and prison chaplaincy further. He comments, ‘There is a calling to the church to go into the highways and byways to seek the lost, to attend to those suffering and to encourage justice.’

Art&Soul People’s Choice Award Tabor Adelaide MTC student, Hayley Kroschel has won the 2012 Art&Soul People’s Choice award for her painting, Intertwined with glory.

The second most popular artwork was a tie between Hayley’s Light and Dimity Daziel’s Lion. Three artworks tied for third place. These are: Karena Foster’s Poppies, Leanne Stahl’s Hope deferred and Hayley Kroschel’s What does it mean if he’s alive.

Some positive comments made about Intertwined with glory included: “... It invites me to imagine myself, intertwined with God’s glory – like being caught in a fiery tornado or radiant whirlpool...” “...I see reflected the dynamic, unpredictable movement of the spirit of God moving through us all...” “... It speaks to the heart...”

Hayley explains the inspiration behind her piece - There is power where two or three gather in the name of Jesus. When we worship together in spirit and in truth, coming before him in complete raw honesty, his presence will surely come and his fire fall from heaven. His fire spreads from one to another, and as we worship we open our hearts. As we open our hearts, we allow him to refine us like silver or precious metal in a crucible. His presence surrounds us as we experience him together. We create a bond of community with each other in this place and we are encouraged by what we see and how God moves. This is how he intended it to be, he longs to be present to his people, to inter-twine us with his glory.
