More Reasons to Love New York One of the things I enjoy about craft beer writing is traveling around in search of a new experience. Sometimes I’m able to travel far, and other times I don’t have to leave Onondaga County. However, there’s the whole rest of the state, which has some fantastic breweries sure to guarantee a great experience worth the trip. If that’s not possible, the next best thing is to attend a beer fest where you can meet the brewers, owners and other representatives. It’s not always easy to meet them at the same time in the same place! Luckily for us, the New York State Brewers Association is holding their annual Brewers Fest on November 19 at the Landmark Theater.

To learn more, I recently talked with Paul Leone, Executive Director of the New York State Brewers Association to find out what it’s all about and what makes it so special.

Paul, what exactly is the NYSBA? The New York State Brewers Association is the brewing industry trade association whose sole mission is to protect, educate, and promote the brewing industry in New York State.

How and when did it begin?

We were founded in 2003 after a very small group of NYS brewers got into a heated argument about market share. It was then that they decided that

they had bigger fights to fight rather than fighting with each other, and the NYSBA was born. Interesting side note, the very first New York State Brewers Association was actually founded in 1888 in New York City, and died out around prohibition.

What’s your role?

I am the Executive Director of the NYSBA. My role is to run the day-today operation of the association, and I report to nine regional Board of Directors, who are all brewers and brewery owners. I am the only full time

What do you want New Yorkers to know about the NYSBA? If New Yorkers like craft beer, job growth, solid businesses in their communities, and tourism dollars flowing into their towns, then they should know more. As the state’s trade association for craft beer, it’s our job to ensure the laws of the state continue to encourage steady and responsible growth throughout the state.

The craft beer industry in NYS is a $4 billion per year economic engine and growing.

What accomplishments has the NYSBA had?

When we were founded in 2003, the main focus was to change outdated laws in the alcohol industry in a way that would encourage growth. The

We are one of the most craft beer friendly states in the country, and the NYSBA is largely responsible for making that happen.

Tell me more about the event on November 19th. What sets this beer fest apart from others in the area?

Our New York Craft Brewers Festival in Syracuse is unique on several levels. First and foremost, it’s a showcase of all NYS breweries. Secondly, the brewers, owners or direct brewery reps pour the beer, never volunteers.

That’s a big one. Early on we used to have bands at our festivals, but as it turned out, that was our number one complaint because people wanted to talk with the brewers and learn about the beer, and the loud music got in the way of that. When you go, you’ll hear people talking as much as sampling, which makes it a great night for everyone.

How many years has this event been going on?

We are in our fourth year in Syracuse and plan to stay here for the foreseeable future.

What can festival goers expect?

For this event, we chose the Landmark Theatre, which as an amazing space to say the least. We take over both floors and the stage, with over 50 NYS breweries pouring. We’ve also added a local food element where local restaurants and food vendors offer samples of their food at no extra charge, so this event is special to the Syracuse area, and now sells out ever year. VIP admission is limited to 300 tickets and VIP ticket holders will get early access and VIP beer specially elected by the brewers; this sells out quickly every year and never disappoints.

What do you like most about it?

I really love the list of breweries that attend. Every year we’ve managed to pull in breweries from every region of the state, which makes it even more

For over 25 years Ron Spencer has been a mainstay of the CNY blues scene. He has lent his fiery blend of blues, and roots-based guitar playing to some of the area’s premier bands including Grammy nominated Joe Whiting, The Kingsnakes’ Pete McMahon, Tom Townsley and blues diva, Kim Lembo. In 1996 Ron brought his four piece combo to national attention with their CD, Ron Spencer & The Nite Crew, Burnin’ Desire. In May of ‘98 Blues Revue declared them “the best-unsigned act” He has shared the stage with dozens of national recording acts such as Rod Piazza, Charlie Musslewhite, Johnny Copeland, Kenny Neal, Son Seals and Little Charlie & The Nitecats. He has been invited on stage to engage in head to head guitar duels with such heavyweights as Duke Robillard, Anson Funderburgh, Bob Margolin and Rick Holmstrom. The Accountant As the years go on, and maybe this is just a matter of perception, but it seems that a large portion of major cinematic releases are effects-laden adventures, comedies, or family films.

This certainly rings true when it comes to the summer season. Shortly thereafter, we see the content shift more towards heavy-hitting dramas that are making a play to take home some of the hardware that will doled out during award season. For these reasons, it seems as if it has become increasingly rare for the suspense/thriller genre to find its place. This category of film has been shifting much more towards the horror and supernatural realm in the last decade, with straight-laced pulse-pounders virtually falling off of

For these reasons, Ben Affleck’s latest venture, THE ACCOUNTANT, was a welcome divergence from the atypical Hollywood production. After the disappointment of BATMAN V SUPERMAN, Affleck gives a phenomenal performance as introvert Christian Wolff. A brilliant mathematician who is afflicted with a form of high-functioning autism, he is a solitary soul who finds comfort in puzzles and equations. the most complex and intricate problems imaginable, he makes a living fixing the books for a number of nefarious clients. To shield himself from law enforcement agencies, he also prepares taxes for a small agency within a small strip mall.

Wolff is enlisted to take a look at the accounting records for Living Robotics.

The company, run by Lamar Black (John Lithgow), is one of the most influential scientific entities in the country, providing prosthetics and other aid to those in need. Due to the complexities of their multi-faceted finances, when an inconsistency is found by accountant Dana Cummings (Anna Kendrick) the company enlists Wolff to get to the bottom of the discrepancies. Over the course of an evening, he discovers that one of the employees has been skimming money for years. What he doesn’t realize is that by solving the mystery, he has put his life and Dana’s at risk. When it becomes apparent that someone wants both of them dead, he abandons his life of no-strings-attached solitude in order to keep her alive.

Despite his outward appearance, Wolff harbors a dangerous secret. Though he makes his living using mathematics, he is also a highly-trained and ruthless killing machine. Growing up, his father didn’t believe in traditional forms of treatments when it came to his autism. Instead, he taught the boy and his brother to fight, and to channel his disability in a variety of different ways. This allowed Wolff to evolve into an efficient, calculated, and cold-blooded dude.

While he is constantly careful and does not stay in the same place for long, his actions have garnered the attention of the director of financial crimes in the Treasury Department, Ray King (JK Simmons). King, who is on the cusp of retirement, assigns analyst Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) with the daunting task of tracking down the elusive accountant.

The first half of THE ACCOUNTANT is pretty fantastic. The plot is intriguing and multi-layered, and is highlighted by Affleck’s spectacular turn. His character is complex and mysterious, and he effectively exudes an air of mystery and danger. Wolff is socially awkward and his penchant for savagery definitely exposes some flaws, yet he is inherently likable. He is a man of few words, his bursts of violence are sudden and scarily precise, and his true motivations remain puzzling and secretive. There are brief moments of humor in THE ACCOUNTANT, which are neither exploitive nor misguided. Whether it is an inappropriately timed and timid waive, or small snippet of dialogue, these moments effectively break the tension without slowing down the story. Another welcome surprise was the relationship that develops between Wolff and Dana. It didn’t follow the typical on-screen formula that usually unfolds in movies such as these, even when I was certain that this is where their union was heading.

The final act of the film is where things begin to falter. As the multitude of story THE ACCOUNTANT lines reach their inevitable conclusion, RATED: R things get convoluted. comes a maturity and mutual respect for each other that translates well on stage. The audience can sense our enjoyment and that in turn gives them permission to have fun. We never take them for granted and are thankful for each and every person that has chosen to spend their evening with us. We take pride in our arrangements of cover songs, but we’re especially proud of the great response that we get from our original material.

CS: You must have some pretty good stories by now.

RS: I’ve been very fortunate to have played with such great musicians over the years, many of them local. Backing CNY’s cream of the crop frontmen, Joe Whiting, Isreal Hagan, Dugan Henhawk and Jimmy Cavallo.

I’ve had the best seat in the house! Playing festivals over in England with Jimmy, the two CDs I did with him, two SAMMYS and winning Blues Revue Magazines’ ‘Sponsor the Bands Contest’ with fellow winner, Joe Bonamassa, certainly rank right up there! Years ago we played a Friday night festival warm up show. Studebaker John, one of the acts for the next day’s lineup, sat in with us while we were playing one of his own songs —from our set list— very bizarre!

CS: Ready? … Set? … Go! … Top three blues legend’s in your opinion.

Top three blues players, today. Who’s carrying the torch of tradition and/or pushing the boundaries of the blues form itself?

RS: T- Bone Walker, B.B. King, Albert King were innovators that represent the basis for most styles of blues and rock & roll. As for contemporary guitarists I would say Jr. Watson for his originality and unpredictability, Duke Robillard for his command of so many styles and Ronnie Earl for shear soulfulness. Gone too soon were Sean Costello and Nick Curran, both who were both torch bearers and genre jumpers. Thankfully, with artists like Gary Clark Jr. tapping into to a new younger audience, the future of the blues seems to be in good hands.

CS: What’s in your music near-future?

RS: We’re signed to a national blues artist agency in Florida that has

To Take or Not To Take Today I take on aspirin. Why not? I have already talked about the overuse of statin drugs, the crazy dietary recommendations including salt restriction, the beneficial role of fat in your diet, and supplements so why not take on aspirin. Seems like everyone in America is taking an aspirin or knows someone taking aspirin. It’s almost expected on people’s records that if they are adults you just mark multivitamin and aspirin as presupposed medicines. I think most doctors just assume adults are taking a multivitamin and an aspirin … on general principle. But what’s the science behind it? I was going to write that there is no evidence that aspirin is beneficial for most people. That would be wrong. There is evidence that aspirin is beneficial … but there is also evidence that most people don’t need it and actual can be hardened by it. You shouldn’t just drink the aspirin-aide … you should decide for yourself and should base it on the evidence.

If you ask your doctor if you should take an aspirin he or she will probably say … ”sure why not?” This is the conventional wisdom. The current

in people between 50 and 60! There are bleeding risks associated with aspirin. I am not worried about the increased risk of GI bleeding with the drug … I figure that is offset by the possible benefit of decreasing colon cancer. The bleeding risk I worry about is in the brain. If you take aspirin and have a fall with head injury aspirin can increase the amount of bleeding around the brain. If you have a bleeding type of stroke, which thankfully accounts for only a small percentage of strokes, having been on aspirin increases the bleeding in the stroke area. This is not good. I can transfuse blood but I can’t transfuse brain. At least not yet.

OK so this is just one panel … what do the other experts say … surely the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association weigh in on the use of aspirin.

In the September 2015 edition of the American College of Cardiology commenting on the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association joint statement which state that “low-dose aspirin (75-162 mg/d) is reasonable for those at 10-year CVD risk of at least 10% without increased risk of bleeding (ACC/AHA Class IIa, LOE B, ADA LOE C) and in those with diabetes at intermediate risk defined as 5-10% 10-year CVD risk (ACC/AHA Class IIb, LOE C, ADA LOE Expert Opinion).”

A careful reading of the above will show that only in the sub population of people that have a 10 year risk of heart event of 10% does aspirin show any proven benefit. Translation = most people don’t need aspirin! Even the American Heart Association website specifically states “You should not start aspirin therapy on your own.” How often have you and your doctor calculated your particular 10 year heart and stroke risk score? After all, heart disease is the number one killer of adults in America … isn’t it worth 5 minutes of your time and your doctors time to calculate your risk or at least have a conversation about your risk factors? The calculators are available on the web and if you have access to your labs you can do your own calculation. These calculators have their detractors but they at least set the stage for the important conversation about your heart health and therefore your overall health. Don’t be a passive observer of your health care experience … bring questions … expect at least conversation and education if not definitive answers about your health. Your doctor can only guide you … only you can improve your health and that’s a great thing. You don’t need a good insurance company. Its nice to have but it doesn’t ensure your health. You don’t need a gym membership. Its nice to have but it doesnt mean you can’t take care of your exercise business anywhere. You are the one who has to put down the cigarette and say “I’m done.” You are the one that has to look at your dinner plate and say “My new lifestyle starts today.” Does that empower you or scare you.

Just because its up to you doesnt mean that you cant get help in lots of different ways to improve your health. Build your team. Work your team. Hopefully your medical provider is part of that team.

Islam is the state religion of Saudi Arabia and its law requires that all citizens be Muslims. The government does not legally protect the freedom of religion. Any overseas national attempting to acquire Saudi nationality must convert to Islam.

A Madrassa is an Islamic religious school. Calling it a school is beyond me when the ultimate teaching since the 1980s has been death to all that to do not believe in Sharia. (They interpret Sharia literally.) Neuroscience suggests that very early on, we store experiential information in images and feelings. When we learn language, we are then able to name our experiences and communicate our thoughts to ourselves and others. Conflicting information creates cognitive dissonance. When communication of new ideas sets people at odds with others, many people go along to get along. During this election season, I’ve seen many people seeking rationally to discuss issues, shouted down. Unfortunately, peacemakers often shut each other down to pacify the unreasonable folks. This is likely why our founders sought to protect national stability from the crowds through a bicameral House of Representatives.

Now here is some personal stuff that I hope won’t make anybody angry.

In the telephone game of my history, I am sometimes confused by other peoples’ perceptions of me. I’ve recently discovered that my physical brain is missing some natural bridges and pathways I needed to effectively process my own experience and map my way from back there to here. I have often laughed at hearing that I needed my head examined. This Thanksgiving, I’ll be grateful for a telephone conversation years ago during which my father, now deceased, insisted I get to the ER to be looked at because despite my thinking I was OK, I was not OK. I had been waiting for a doctor to call me back about a “ding to the head” that knocked me unconscious the day before. My father said he’d drive me to the ER himself I didn’t make a more immediate plan. I complied.

I did what the doctors told me. Slowly, over time, disconnected memories entered my consciousness in flashes and floods. One day I said to myself, I’ve got the MRI of my brain; let’s have a look see! I looked. I saw.

Pop-psyche and spiritual books have ceded space on my coffee table to information about coping with brain injury symptoms. Nature and nurture work together. We can’t learn from our past experiences if we aren’t aware of them.

I worry about those bodies, minds and spirits damaged by herd behavior triggered by bullying talk. I worry about our soldiers. I worry about people trapped in proverbial Plato’s caves. There are reasons behind tyrants burning books.

Bad history isn’t something we should be doomed to repeat.

Knowledge is power. Think, then breathe.

“Google it” used to be a punch-line. As if a Google search was a reliable source of information. “I found it on the Intertubes, it must be true!” That line was considered a joke. Now, sadly, it’s taken seriously.

In this sorry election cycle, as I watch inflamed Internet Warriors hurling insults and “proof” at one another, I can only feel sad, and not a little frightened, that this Guttenberg of the digital age has proven to be so dangerous to our collective brain.

Reading books used to be my favorite pass time. Now I find that I spend more time —as do most of us— on the Internet.

But there are two major reasons why this “gift of fire,” The Internet, could prove deadly to your mind: - first, a thing called “Confirmation Bias,” - second, the sources themselves Let’s take confirmation bias first. This is simply the human tendency to look for information that “confirms” what we already believe. These days, this kind of highly skewed data is readily available on the Internet. The first thing I do when checking any nugget of information is try to learn where it came from. If the source is “OccupyDemocrat,” or “BearingArms,” I can be fairly sure the source will have an agenda, and I need to take what I learn with some salt.

This simply means that I hunt for as much information as I can find, try to locate original data (though as we all know, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics), and then interpolate what is probably “true.” Or at least, reasonable to assume. Once upon a time, there was journalism, and there was “yellow journalism,” or salacious and gossipy information from “a source close to the story.” Now most of it is the latter, and even institutions of erstwhile merit —like the New York Times— have been found wanting.

Then, there are the sources themselves. We’ve already dealt with the fact that most Internet publications have a bias or agenda —one of them, of course, is to get “clicks.” Hence, the “clickbait” titles on sidebar articles: “He Thought He Knew His Wife - Til He Saw This One Thing!”

But more to the point, even when an article is a genuine piece of journalism: it’s too easy. It takes a lot of work and time to write a book, particularly a scholarly one. Kim’s Cicero Family Diner Kim’s Cicero Diner is an old-fashioned family diner. It’s like stepping into the set of the “Happy Days” TV show. It’s checkerboard floor is accented with nostalgic posters and prints of an era gone by. Who remembers vinyl records (?)—for the younger people who may never have experienced the blissful background scratch in the music, you can see some 33s and 45s hanging from the ceiling!

Twelve years ago, Kim Rizzo bought the diner and her husband Gary helped her pull it up from a bankrupted state. Now it’s a refreshing change for those missing a home cooked meal. Gary was laid off after 28 years as a welder for the Carrier Corporation. He was also a professional photographer on the side, but with both he and Kim losing their jobs, they had to make a quick decision.

Kim decided to buy the failing entity and convert it into a welcoming gathering place with great food. Now how do I know the food is good?

Well, since I went in to interview Gary, who manages the daily functions of the restaurant, I decided to taste their culinary skills for myself. Since I have my own catering business and know homecooked food from prepared food, I put them to the test. I’m glad to report that they are everything they advertise!!! I had a delightful Belgium waffle with real maple syrup. It was light and delicious, as good as mine even though I hate to admit that! Cooked to perfection by Pat, their head cook, the waffle was just crispy enough to absorb the syrup, and light enough to satisfy my appetite without being over full. With Gary watching over the diner, Kim has taken a full-time positon with Mellon banking. As Gary put it, “She only comes in to get the money,” but he couldn’t say that with a straight face. “We’re very proud of what we’ve established here, and still have 90% of our original staff.” Now that’s an accomplishment because the restaurant industry is notorious for high turnover in staff. I think this is a testament about how welcoming and friendly the place truly is. While I sat This place is truly eclectic! Gary stated that they have great repeat business, and it’s no wonder why. The servers, Jeannette, Becky and April, are eager to give you the best eating experience possible. There’s also Tony who is Gary’s right hand man. When told how Gary referred to him, Tony simply replied, “You know it” with a pleasant smile. greeted by another smiling face – Doris! At 83, she’s still an active part of the restaurant; she rolls silverware, and is an overall asset to the business. The family like environment is rounded out by their manager, Troy.

However, Gary is very comfortable leaving any of his staff in charge if he has to step out – “They are all competent and I trust them. I know it will be business as usual and a lot of places can’t say that. I’m really proud of my staff, and I try to show that to them.”

There a lots of regulars there for breakfast, lunch or both to include Gary’s Mom and Dad – Sonny, Junie and friend, Phyllis. When I asked Gary what he likes best about this business, he replied, “It’s the people of course! You get to meet a lot of wonderful people and many are in the same business. One of my favorite couples are Stan and Kue, owners of Sweet Basil, which is where I go to eat and relax after we close.” I asked if that was a shameless plug for his friends, and he replied “Absolutely” without missing a heartbeat. “We all take care of each other in this business because it’s a tough business. There’s a lot more to it than people think.

I’m fortunate to have a great relationship with my staff and customers, but I also have a great relationship with m vendors.” Gary is very proud of the fact that they only use brand named items to ensure the consistency of the food.

This place is truly eclectic! From the cover of the menu sporting a Victorian lady in her finest hat, to the trophies in the front window. Those are Gary’s trap shooting trophies. He’s had a lot of success in this arena too – he was State Runner Up in 2012 and his average shooting score is 97-98.

He also holds the Perfect Squad score for 2012, and the 2016 High average score for the whole state. Gary is also Gander Mountain’s top shooter with an average of 98. “Is this what you plan to do in retirement,” I asked.

“Nope,” he said quickly, “I’m going back to my 1st passion – photography.”

Kim’s Cicero Family Diner has lots of regulars there for their delicious breakfasts, lunches or both.

Gary is an accomplished professional photographer and has done photo shoots for the Clintons and at the Congel resorts.

Gary plans to retire in about 4 years but has no plans to slow down. “I’ll visit my sons, one in Dallas and the other in San Diego. One thing is for sure, I won’t be sitting down!”

Your Fall Essentials

We’ve still got weeks of fall weather to enjoy before throwing on our parkas. There is still plenty of time to show off your style before I start bundling up.

Now that we’re past Halloween it feels like everyone has already jumped straight into the holiday season.

Ornaments and candy canes are in every store and pretty soon you’ll start hearing “Jingle Bells” on the radio. But hold up —it’s not winter yet. We’ve still got weeks of fall weather to enjoy before throwing on our parkas. Here are the pieces I can’t live without while I can still show off my style before I start bundling up.

Turtlenecks

I’m not ready for scarves yet, but I have short hair so my neck is always bare to the whipping wind. That’s where my trusty turtlenecks come in.

They keep me warm while still looking super cute and without covering up my outfit. Plus, I love how chic they look layered under jackets and vests.

Mid-Length Jackets

It’s chilly enough to need a jacket, but not cold enough to be all zipped up. I love a stylish coat that I can leave open that just adds another layer of trendiness to the rest of my outfit. My current favorite has leather panels on the arms and looks cute over any outfit I’m wearing.

Vests

Whenever an outfit is looking a little plain or unoriginal, I love to throw a vest over it. I usually go for something that comes down to my knees to either add a bit of color or some new details to my look. Lately I’ve been rocking an army green vest with big cargo pockets and a more tailored burgundy vest that’s a great alternative to a blazer.

Tights, vests, turtlenecks, mid-rise jackets are great pieces for the fall.

They can look good with with any outfit!

Tights

I know, it’s an obvious one but I am a total dress and skirt kind of girl so I love to throw some tights on to keep my legs warm. For nights out I might choose something sheer but for days at the office, opaque black is the way too go. It feels like I’m wearing leggings but I look like I put some real effort into my ensemble.

Penny Loafers

I used to wear penny loafers with my high school uniform and after that I swore I’d never buy another pair.

To me they were dorky, but now I’m totally into them. They’re like an elevated version of a ballet flat because they have more structure. I love to pair them with jeans and a sweater or a cute skirt and blouse for work.

Fall is officially here, and for most of us, that means shorter days, longer nights, and declining temperatures. It’s become an unspoken rule that come Daylight Savings Time, when we get ready to set our clocks back an hour, we simultaneously kiss our social lives goodbye, and instead opt for weekends filled with movies, takeout and wine.

It’s no secret that the colder weather that fall brings changes us. It changes the way we think, the way we behave and the way we move! We can’t stop hitting the snooze button, we seriously contemplate quitting our jobs and we find ourselves succumbing to a life of Ramen Noodles and Judge Judy. Getting out of bed and dressed becomes something we dread and physical activity turns into two words we hate. Even if exercise were something we liked, sticking to an exercise regimen would certainly be a lot easier if we craved protein bars, salads and coconut water instead of Mac N Cheese.

As the days get shorter, we see less and less sunlight. This is especially true when we find ourselves getting out of bed before the sun rises (to get the kids ready for school) and leaving work long after it has set. Our main source of vitamin D is sunlight, and when we don’t get sunlight we miss out. Vitamin D is important for serotonin production, and serotonin

is important for many functions including our sleep-wake cycles. It’s no coincidence that we experience “daytime drowsiness” when the temperature starts to drop. A lack of sunlight also affects serotonin levels which can lead to feelings of depression, fatigue and an increase in our cravings for carbohydrates.

If your job has you cooped up indoors all day make it a point to get out in the sun for a few minutes on a break. If breaking free isn’t possible, try to work near a window. In one study, office workers who sat near windows received higher white light exposure and slept better than those who did not.

Enough of the small talk! Let’s delve into the science behind all of this shall we?

A Lack of Sunlight Can Make You Sad

Our bodies have summertime and wintertime clocks that are determined by our exposure to the sunlight. A lack of sunlight can cause Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a mood disorder that usually affects people from October through April when daylight becomes scarcer. When exposed to less sunlight, your body produces more melatonin, the hormone which makes you feel sleepy. And just as your body begins craving a place to lie down and take a mid-day nap, your brain begins producing lower levels of serotonin —the neurotransmitter that affects mood, appetite, sleep and sexual desire. Simply put, Seasonal Affective Disorder can be a real problem.

Cold Temperatures Can Lead To Physical Lethargy

Cold temperatures reduce sensory feedback, dexterity, muscle strength, blood flow and balance, which can impact your performance of complex physical tasks. I think we’ve all experienced that initial morning chill that leaves us feeling paralyzed with no desire to get out of bed!

Kyle had a cup of the New England clam chowder and it was a rich and creamy treat after a cool day! For entrées Kyle had the Scallops O’Grady, with chopped bacon, scallions, tomatoes and sea scallops sautéed in a light butter lemon-garlic white wine sauce over a bed of linguine. I don’t know how this will translate to writing but this dish tasted like a deconstructed BLT, in an amazing new way. Every single bite was bursting with flavor, it was just so, so, so good. For my entrée I ordered the Caramelized Sea Scallops prepared in a ginger lime sauce with fresh spinach and tomato, served over linguine. This dish was a special but it was so popular that they just had to add it to the menu. It was an unexpected take on scallops with a sweet and tangy taste that was a refreshing change from the usual! I have to say that my other favorite is Black & Blue Shrimp and Scallops, sautéed shrimp and sea scallops Caramelized Sea Scallops prepared in a ginger lime sauce with fresh spinach and tomato, served in a Cajun Alfredo sauce with crumbly bleu cheese over linguine (Left). Scallops O’Grady, with chopped bacon, scallions, tomatoes and sea scallops served over fettuccine and although I didn’t have it sautéed in a light butter lemon-garlic white wine sauce over a bed of linguine (Right). this time I couldn’t leave this dish out of the article! Growing up as a child of the 80’s, there were a few movies that influenced and shaped my eternal love of film. There was DARYL (good luck finding that one!), Disney’s ROBIN HOOD, and then there was the grand-daddy of them all, GHOSTBUSTERS. My unwavering love for the supernatural comedy has never ceased, and chance are, if you walked into a video store that I worked in between 1998-2004, you saw me reciting every line of dialogue along with the movie on the screen.

Although the 1989 sequel couldn’t hold a candle to the original, it still had its fair share of laughs and thrills. In the decades that followed, there was always talk of the inevitable third installGHOSTBUSTERS: Cment. As the years ticked by, the cast grew older, and the allure of getting the Ghostbusters back together began to fade. In fact, in 2011, it was reported that Bill Murray sent Harold Ramis a copy of the GHOSTBUSTERS 3 script with a note that stated: “No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts.” Whether this was true or not, it was painfully apparent that the project was unlikely to get off the ground.

After the untimely passing of Ramis in 2014, it was obvious that the rest of the original cast would never reprise their roles again. This didn’t mean that the Ghostbusters legacy was done, however. In 2014, it was announced that Paul Feig (BRIDESMAIDS, THE HEAT, SPY) would be at the helm of a reboot to the continued on pg 36

Ghostbusters continued from pg 32 series, and that four women would be set to star in the leading roles.

With Feig’s impressive track record, and stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones ready to take on the ghosts, there was certainly high hopes and lofty expectations. Unfortunately, when the first trailer for the film was released, it infamously became the most disliked video in the history of YouTube. This, in itself, wasn’t enough to condemn the project. I, for one, hoped that they chose to leave out the majority of the funny moments so as to not have them spoiled when the movie was actually released.

At the box-office, GHOSTBUSTERS earned roughly $228 million worldwide, but this was still deemed a failure by most industry insiders. Due to a production budget of over $144 million, and a huge marketing budget, the target of $500 million was the number that Sony hoped to attain.

Financial failure aside, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which this iteration of the Ghostbusters will be back for another adventure. As much as I wanted to like it, and as badly as I wanted it to succeed, I was left wholly disappointed.

The plot borrows heavily from the original; from gags, to plotlines, to set pieces. Sure, it was great to see Slimer again (I mean, let’s be honest, who drank Ecto Cooler Hi-C for any reason OTHER than Slimer?) and seeing the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man strut down the streets of NYC was nostalgically blissful, but these brief moments of delight weren’t even as satisfying as I hoped they would be.

In this incarnation of GHOSTBUSTERS, Erin Gilbert (Wiig) is a professor at Columbia University. For years, she has attempted to disown the paranormal research she did with childhood chum Abby Yates (McCarthy). Erin goes to visit Abby at the technical college she works at and meets her quirky assistant, Jillian Holtzman (McKinnon). Erin intended to convince Abby to stop selling the book that they co-wrote together, but ends up reluctantly tagging along when Yates and Holtzman get a call to investigate a potential haunting at a museum.

There is much to be said for the charm and craftsmanship involved with many of the effects in the 1984 version. This same does not hold true for the polished, green-screen ghouls in 2016. Rather than looking more believable, they were, for the most part, computer-generated pieces of animation that didn’t exude the same sense of measurable creepiness that the originals did.

As I’ve discussed in my reviews for the past several years, we are in the era of reboots and sequels, and I can understand that. People love proven commodities, and when you can tap into a mindset of wistful nostalgia, it can be delightful for all involved. Take a look at 21 JUMP STREET, for example. There is no way that should have ever worked, and yet, it found a way to set itself apart from its predecessor, and stood on its own two feet. Unfortunately, in the case of GHOSTBUSTERS, the opposite occurred. DoS - SOS! Something’s wrong, and it isn’t just politics! In this case, it’s the Internet.

Massive DoS attacks have taken place in the last few days —so if your computer, more specifically your internet connection— has been acting oddly, or you haven’t been able to access certain sites or activities, it’s not you. It’s them.

A DoS is a “denial of service” attack. Such attacks have been used at various times, typically aimed at a particular organization or corporation.

Using bots and even coordinated efforts of many people and machines, a target service is flooded with demands for response to the extent that the targeted service or server can’t keep up with it and can eventually grind to a halt altogether.

Why would you do this? There are probably many specific reasons, but the two main categories: a specific attack on a target, and the more alarming one —which appears to be happening recently— a more generalized attempt to disrupt the Internet.

As reported in the NY Times: “Major websites were inaccessible to people across wide swaths of the United States on Friday after a company that manages crucial parts of the internet’s infrastructure said it was under attack.

“Users reported sporadic problems reaching several websites, including Twitter, Netflix, Spotify, Airbnb, Reddit, Etsy, SoundCloud and The New York Times.

“The company, Dyn, whose servers monitor and reroute internet traffic, said it began experiencing what security experts called a distributed denial-of-service attack just after 7 a.m. Reports that many sites were inaccessible started on the East Coast, but spread westward in three waves as the day wore on and into the evening.

“And in a troubling development, the attack appears to have relied on hundreds of thousands of internet-connected devices like cameras, baby monitors and home routers that have been infected —without their owners’ knowledge— with software that allows hackers to command them to flood a target with overwhelming traffic.

“A spokeswoman said the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security were looking into the incident and all potential causes, including criminal activity and a nation-state attack.”

Why does this matter, other than its annoyance factor?

While the specific sites that were difficult or impossible to reach weren’t, in this case, of life-threatening significance, there are a couple of things that signal potential danger: - first that the attacks appear to be, as reported in WIRED, in an interview with Dyn, a “’very sophisticated and complex attack.”’

- second, it appears that the attacks are on-going - third, while DoS attacks are nothing new, and companies like Dyn see them regularly, this event was big enough to involve many, many more targets and significantly more users - finally, a DoS attack of this magnitutde aimed at services like financial, government, healthcare, or other essential services could create real havoc in one or more sectors of our society.

What can you do? Really, nothing much other than follow the protocols stressed over and over when venturing into the cyber world: - use solid passwords and change them frequently - use good virus and malware software and keep it updated - watch for anything that appears suspicious on your computer - some security experts even recommend turning off your computer and unplugging it when you’re planning to be gone for any length of time.

Bacon-Wrapped Turkey Recipe by: somethingnewfordinner.com Ingredients:

TO WEAVE THE BACON JACKET

4 garlic cloves

Start by wrapping the drumsticks. Begin at the back to the drumstick and wind the bacon around trying to slightly overlap each piece until each drumstick is covered.

½ pound butter, room temperature 1 large handful mixed fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, parsley, sage) 1½ pound thick cut bacon, divided 3 carrots, peeled and cut into 3” pieces 3 leeks, cleaned and cut into 3” pieces 2 stalks celery, cut into 3” pieces 1 onion, quartered 2 apple, sliced peels on 1 14-pound turkey Kosher salt and pepper

Directions: FOR THE BACON BUTTER Place oven shelf in bottom of the oven. Heat oven to 450 degrees. Put the garlic cloves in a food processor and whirl to finely mince. Add herbs and briefly pulse to chop. Add butter and ½ pound of bacon and pulse to combine.

Place a horizontal strip of bacon across the breast just below the neck hole. Now place a vertical strip of bacon on the far right of the bird, going from the neck end towards the bottom of the bird.

Alternate weaving horizontal strips and vertical strips until the entire top of the turkey is covered in the jacket. Take care to slightly overlap each strip. Using some kitchen string, tie the legs of the bird together.

TO COOK THE TURKEY Place an oven rack in the bottom of the oven and remove all the top racks. Heat the oven to 450 degrees. Scatter the carrots, leeks, celery, onion and apples in the bottom of a roasting pan. Place a roasting rack on top of the vegetables and place the turkey on top of the rack.

Roast for 30 minutes at 450 degrees and then reduce heat to 375 degrees. Watch the bacon and as soon as it begins to darken cover with tin foil, usually in the first 30 minutes. Cook the turkey until its internal temperature reaches 160 degrees, about 15 minutes per pound or about 3½ hours total for a 14 pound bird.

When turkey reaches 155 to 160 degrees, remove from the oven and let rest for 30 minutes before serving.
