The Kingsnakes Slither Back Into the Limelight A Candid Chat with Pete McMahon I first became aware of the Kingsnakes during the year I lived in Fresno, California. A friend of mine was selling all her vinyl, and being the audiophile that I am, I bought all of it. I took it home to see what I got. There were all kinds of goodies in this collection. Famous classics, some duplicates, stuff I had heard of but hadn’t really sunk my teeth into yet, some junk, and some obscure gems. Flipping through records is great fun. I love looking at album covers and turning them over to check out the credits - a pastime/addiction I developed in the heyday of my adolescence. In flipping through I found a record by the Kingsnakes. I had never heard of them, and so, I put it on and discovered a terrific blues band. Discovering new music is equally fun to playing familiar favorites, to me. When I moved back to this area 5 years ago, I heard and still hear their name continued on pg 6

The Kingsnakes continued from pg 5 pop-up, frequently, way more than I did on the west coast, in the chit-chat of Syracuse music. I’d think to myself, ‘yeah, I remember hearing about them on the west coast.’ Then one day, ‘Ahhhhh...’I figured it out. These boys were from here, and ‘ohhhhhh...’I was the last to know. And then with great irony, since I write this article for the last couple of years, their manager contacted me about covering them in Table Hopping. Funny how the world of serendipity works. Pretty soon I find myself chatting on the phone with none other than Pete McMahon (vocals and harmonicas) about their days with (oh my) John Lee Hooker and other heavy cats; and also about how they’re ‘puttin’ the band back together’ for some upcoming shows, including December 27th at the Palace Theater. Pete McMahon strikes me as a gracious gentleman, seasoned with the kind of gratitude from their years of being on the road, unpretentious... not at all patronizing (like the wannabe stars do all too often), no entitlements. He’s just a cool dude that is grateful that he got to do his craft, with purity... following and trusting the path presented to him by ding so. CS: Hi Pete. How are you, doing? PM: Hi Chuck. wow, thanks for doing this, man. We really appreciate you writing about us. CS: Its my pleasure. It must be very exciting for you guys going at it again. Tell the new kids the nutshell version of your group; and who’s in it. PM: Well, I play harmonica and sing. Louis Miceli is on drums and vocals. Mark Tiffault plays drums.

How did you get started in music? PM: I grew up hearing all kinds of music in my house. I eventually gravitated to Blues through my older brothers records and 8-tracks! When I would hear the Golf Club harmonica, my ear would perk up for some reason. I started playing harmonica at age 11. CS: You Kingsnakes have quite a history. Tell us a bit about it. The Kingsnakes continued from pg 6 definition. PM: The Kingsnakes were very influenced by Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and of course John Lee Hooker. That’s where The Kingsnakes name came from, John’s song ‘Crawlin Kingsnake.’ We were into everybody though, especially The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Johnny Winter, John Hammond, Duke Robillard and on and on. We eventually got to be Voted Best of CNY 10 Years In a Row! friends with a lot of our musical idols. CS: The blessing of the ‘out-there-on-the-road’ touring experience for sure. How do things look here at home in the CNY music scene, to you? PM: I’m not as familiar as I used to be on the scene. There are some heavy musicians in this town, of all styles of music is as good as any in the world. I used to travel all over, and I would hear great musicians. But I would think, ‘man, we’ve got cats in Syracuse that could hang with ANY of them.’ CS: Please share a highlight from your music days. a LOT! CS: Yeah? PM: We used to play this one gig in Jacksonville Beach, Pier 7 I think. We would play a four night stretch, Thursday through Sunday. On the Sunday evening gig we would do one set, and then it was an open jam using our equipment. Leon Wilkeson, the bass player for Lynyrd Skynyrd, had been there the night before and had some very kind words for us. The sun was just going down before the jam started, and all of a sudden all these Southern Rock musicians started coming through the door... long leather jackets, hats and long hair. These were THE players in Southern Rock... guys from 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, etc. They walked up onstage and kind of tried to edge us out of the way to get to our amps and drums, cranking everything up to 11! PM: We were very inspired by our musical heroes, we would try to take some ideas and put it in our own words you might say. As Terry Mulhauser says, ‘The amateur borrows, and the professional STEALS. CS: Mozart was the first to say that, I believe. I agree. What do you think of today’s music? Who’s doing it right? PM: The guy from Ireland, Hozier. I heard him sing a Skip James song solo, I was impressed. It’s nice to see someone in the popular scene who has ROOTS, there’s a lot to be said for that. Jaco Pastorius is having a cool renaissance even though he passed on a long time ago. The bass player from Metallica made a movie about him that’s opening at the Palace Theater November 27th Jaco was a genius. CS: Hmm.... (take a moment to write down the 27th...) Jaco... the mentor of so many bass players today. Speaking of mentoring, got advice to the aspiring new musicians out there? PM: Turn back while you still can!!! Only kidding. CS: (Laughs out loud.) PM: Practice as much as you can. I used to bury myself in my parent’s basement when I was a kid trying to learn how to play like Paul Butterfield and Little Walter Jacobs, I’m still trying! We were very hungry, and in no particular hurry, so we also ordered fried calamari. The calamari was lightly battered and fried to a perfect crisp. The thought of a third term for this Mayor has the informed seeking ways to let others know what an injustice this would be: The Mayor needed the approval of a majority on a 5 person committee and this would be binding and final. She appointed a new Commissioner of Aviation and put her on the committee along with two other appointees whose careers rested on her whim. A vote for “right” was career ending. Why does such a committee exist when the conclusion is 100% foregone? So with a record of excellence and the massive support described herein for our company, this committee sent those in the enclosed photo on a plight into economic ruin, and due to the age of one Corporate Gifts·Holiday Specials and the handicaps of the other this ruin is permanent. Till death. Ruined. Both played by the rules and were Fruit Bouquets·Chocolate Truffles decimated. How in the name of everything holy is that not corruption? How is it American? Our company was never met to be a Political Plum. We had nothing to do with City government. Four years ago I was sitting in my office at the airport. Finally, I was ok. My family was ok. My Son Billy was ok. I had made it. I had come to an agreement with my employer at Century Transportation and in the next contract my future would be secure. In the next five years I would make enough to finally secure a future for my son Billy. Billy was a breach birth. Stretched and deprived of oxygen. He wears his braces as a badge of honor. He loves them and shows them off to his friends. He knows his Dad was a Green Beret and had his braces designed with the American Flag. Getting to this point in my life did not come easy for me. My Mom and Dad had become severe alcoholics before I was 10. My self-esteem was shot. I knew better but the accumulation of experiences had taken

a toll and I had to find a way into normalcy. I had to fix my self-esteem. I joined the Army at 17. In the Army I set my sites on the Green Berets. I knew I could do things. I knew that if I achieved this that respect from others would restore what childhood failed to provide. I was 17. First Step: I went Airborne. of us kids explored a long abandoned building. We got caught. It took over a year to for the Clearance to come through and by then I was due to come back to the states. Three weeks after my return to Smoke Bomb Hill at the JFK Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, (Home of the Green Berets) the 3000 men I served with went to Viet Nam. Danny Schenck was my Best friend and he would write. Our buddy Mike Thompson, the CO’s driver hit a land mine and was blown to pieces. Mike Minahane, he assumed my job, was shot in the leg. The 173d Airborne Brigade fought more than any outfit since the Revolutionary War. I quickly learned that the Special Forces were always at war somewhere. The 5th Special Forces Group had been in Viet Nam since July of 1961. Back at Fort Bragg I found that a non-combatant was the exception. I was one. I either drank or trained with these guys nearly every day. Tears fell in a few solemn moments as they described Viet Nam. These were tears of some awesome men. I volunteered for Viet Nam from the Special Forces requesting that I be extended only long enough to finish my tour. They wanted me to re-enlist. I would not reenlist. I figured I would sign the papers, the war would end and I would be stuck again for years. So I did my time and got out. The war did not end. Most of SubS, SandwicheS, my boys were fighting. Derry had the Cavatelli with Broccoli & Mushrooms which was fresh broccoli florets sautéed with sliced mushrooms in extra virgin olive oil, finished with fresh garlic, white wine and Romano cheese. Derry also decided to add shrimp to the dish and she said that although the dish would have been delicious without it, the shrimp made it truly spectacular! Both of our entrees were cooked to perfection and the portions were gigantic. One of the best parts of ordering an entrée from Avicolli’s is that if you like leftovers you will know what you are having for lunch the following day! A Book For Christmas When I was a child, I had some greataunts, whom I don’t recall ever meeting, but they had a lovely tradition: they gave us children books for Christmas. It was always something unusual - a book I’d never heard of, unlike, say, my beloved Nancy Drew series, or even The Black Stallion books. No, these were tales of children who lived on a remote Scottish island with puffins for pets, or a collection of poems with illustrations so beautiful I’d pore over them for hours, tracing ever line, and imagining myself in the painting. There was nothing quite like opening Aunts Paula and Hannah’s gift each year, and eventually, as Christmas dinner was cooking, settling down in the sleepy silence between gift opening and dinner to read. Back to The Rabbit’s Umbrella - the book centers on a big, wonderful dog named Lump. He’s brought home as a pet by Mr. Montague for his son, Peter. Mrs. Montague, a social climbing lady who lunches, expects a dainty little poodle, similar to those of her friends, who delicately receive bits of cucumber sandwich from the hands of their mistresses at tea parties. Instead, Mr. Montague falls in love with a big, lumbering, lump of a something-dog - and Peter names him Lump. Meanwhile, in a haunted house on the other side of town - just a soon-to-be-decommissioned streetcar ride away, live three burglars: Pease, Punch, and Mr. Bouncely. These three unlikely criminals rob houses, but never make much of a go at it as Punch is fond of whipping up a meal out of whatever he finds in the refrigerators of the unsuspecting householders. Usually, the owners will awaken - or return home - to find the remnants of some elegant meal in the kitchen, and little if anything taken. All the elements for a great tale are in place: boy, dog, save-the-streetcar, and three bumbling burglars. It’s a chapter-book, as one young reader I am very fond of likes to call them. That means that while a young reader of a certain age can read by him or herself, it’s the kind of book that mom and/or dad will also enjoy reading with children one delightful chapter per evening. Will Mrs. Montague let Peter keep Lump? Will the streetcar be abandoned in the name of progress? Will the burglars invade the Montague home? And most of all, will

These find the object stories are so full of detailed pictures a child - and a parent - can get lost for an hour on a single two page spread: scenes of perhaps a simpler time, but with happy, friendly, fun and filled frames of pigs and hippos and trucks and farmers and towns and railroads - it’s designed for mom and dad to ask the little one,”Can you find the tractor?” Perhaps there is a common thread in that both writers haled from a simpler time themselves, though both saw action in WWII. Scarry’s (an Irish name properly pronounced Scar-ee, but typically pronounced “Scary” by Americans) most famous series of books was about Busytown. Scarry’s characters were almost always anthropomorphic animals. But for a certain type of child, it is the detailed accuracy of how things work that will provide endless examination and enjoyment. One little boy I know was quite fastidious in his critique of things that work - and if the drawing would not work as promised, he wasn’t

reluctant to say so. But Scarry’s illustrations never disappointed. His trucks and trains and tractors and gadgets would actually deliver - to this little fellow’s delight. For an older reader - why not go ahead and get a collected works of Dickens, or even Sherlock Holmes? It’s a sad thing that, with so much to take up our time, we miss out on the drawn-out, detailed immersion of Charles Dickens and Conan Doyle. It was from reading writers like these that I learned to let the “movie” of the book play in my mind. To this day, when I revisit Bleak House or The Speckled Band, I still see the same rooms, the same characters, and hear the same voices. Because in the days that these books were written, imagination of necessity filled the role that television, film, and even illustration now occupy, the reader’s own vision of events became the story. I can still see the lights across the moors; the busy streets of London; the shabby Victorian rooms of Holmes or the Cratchits- the same way that I saw them the first time I read The Hound of the Baskervilles, or A Christmas Story. So go ahead - start a Christmas gift tradition, for your own or someone else’s kids. Or for anyone you want to delight. Find a book that will be a surprise.

Creed Triumphant! When it comes to the cinematic world, there are bound to be plenty of surprises each and every year. These unexpected delights can come in the form of performances or the film’s themselves, and oftentimes, it is a combination of the two. 2015 was no exception, and when all is said and done, CREED may end up as the most baffling of all. When Sylvester Stallone stepped into the ring for one last battle in 2006’s ROCKY BALBOA, it appeared to be an adequate swan song for one of the medium’s most endearing heroes. The film showed shades of greatness, and despite his advancing age, Stallone made his character an endearing underdog once again. At the time, there was every reason to believe that BALBOA would serve as the final chapter of the beloved series. As it turned out, Rocky wasn’t done. Well, not exactly. In the spectacular CREED, Stallone steps away from the main stage, and allows the incredible Michael B.

Jordan to have the spotlight shine upon him as the main event. When audiences are first introduced to protagonist Adonis Johnson, he is a young child living in a detention center where he is constantly getting into fights. His life turns around when he receives a visit from a woman named Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad) who claims to have been the wife of his father. She invites the troubled youth to come and live with her, and educates him on his previously unknown lineage. Adonis discovers that his father had died before he was born, and that the man was, in fact, Apollo Creed. Flash forward fifteen years, and Adonis (Jordan) is stepping into a boxing ring in Mexico. He dominates his opponent in a matter of seconds, and twelve hours later, is back at his desk job in California. Despite receiving a promotion at his financial firm, he decides to quit. He believes that he is destined for boxing greatness, and wants to dedicate his life to fulfilling this dream. His adoptive mother is saddened and disappointed by this revelation, and voices her disapproval about his decisions. Adonis (now going by the name Donny) moves to Philadelphia, where he hopes to train with his father’s greatest adversary, Rocky Balboa (Stallone). The former champion is reluctant to get involved at first, as he has finally left the boxing world behind. Due to Donny’s determination and tenacity, however, Balboa gradually warms himself to the idea of standing in the budding fighter’s corner. Much like the original ROCKY, CREED is a film that is

There are plenty of the parallels between CREED and ROCKY, yet director Ryan Cooglar (who was also at the helm of FRUITVALE STATION) finds a way to make the story seem fresh, and new. Donny’s evolution from back room brawler to legitimate contender (ultimately he is granted the opportunity to fight the undefeated champion) is a tale that we have seen countless times before, Sylvester Stalone and Michael B. Winter is almost here. If you’re anxiously anticipating cold dark days, nasty bugs, dry skin and a few extra holiday pounds, join the crowd! This is the time of year that we’re coughing excessively, sneezing uncontrollably, blowing our noses until were left looking like Rudolph, and trying desperately to get rid of that constant tickle in the back of our throats. Throat lozenges, hot soup, humidifiers and Kleenex boxes seem to be a permanent staple on our weekly grocery list! Before you pull the covers up over your head and stay in bed until spring, I’m here to tell you that it is possible to enjoy this time of year while staying healthy and fit! Here are a few ways to get through the season without saying Bah Humbug: Embrace the Season It may be dark and gloomy outside, but your outlook doesn’t have to be. It’s important to keep your mood up because it can help you avoid everything from getting sick, gaining a few extra pounds and feeling like you’re dragging through the day.

Change Your Toothbrush Yes, I know this is supposed to be an exercise and fitness article, but this is a tip that can’t go unmentioned! Keep Your Faucet Running It’s no surprise that we don’t want a cold glass of water when it’s freezing outside. Unfortunately, this can increase our risk of dehydration and make us more vulnerable to getting sick. Water helps the body carry vital nutrients to cells and helps get rid of toxins. So whether you are thirsty or not, make sure you keep drinking! Increase Your Fiber A 2010 study at the University of Illinois found that the fiber in foods like oats, apples, and nuts helps reduce inflammation and strengthens the immune system by increasing anti-inflammatory proteins. Add just a little more fiber to your daily diet. Chill Out Stress can cause our immune system to become less efficient at fighting off nasty bugs. We are also much more likely to soothe our troubled minds with “Ben & Jerry” therapy. Reduce stress by heading to the movies, reading a book, building a snowman, having a snowball fight, or taking a Yoga class.

Cayuga Lake Wine Trail Welcomes
New Owners to Six Mile Creek Since 1983, when wineries along the shores of Cayuga Lake joined forces to establish the nation’s first wine trail, the organization has experienced many changes. Changes range from grapes grown and marketing strategies used to management and ownerships. After many years of single-family ownership, some of the Cayuga Lake wineries are experiencing a transition in possession, either by sale or by inheritance. Very recently, husband and wife team, Mark and Amy Renodin purchased Six Mile Creek Vineyard in Ithaca, NY. While studying at Jefferson Community College in Watertown, NY, Mark began working in food service as a bartender and a waiter until he graduated with degrees in Culinary Arts and Hotel Restaurant Management. Afterwards, Mark managed the kitchen at Pine Tree Inn in Brantingham until transitioning to the assistant manager of a fine dining restaurant called Memories in Lowville, NY. Just three years later, he became restaurant manager. Eight years in, he switched career paths entirely and took a job with the US Postal service. Amy has spent her career climbing the managerial ladder at various major retailer centers, spending the last ten years as the General Manager at a Wal-Mart. After working her way up through the ranks, and at times running multiple retail locations

Throughout the years, Mark and Amy had taken biannual trips to the Finger Lakes. During their visits, they fell in love with the atmosphere of New York’s wine region and began dreaming of having a winery to call their own. After some soul searching, they decided to pursue their dream. Mark took a non-paying position at Tug Hill Vineyards to learn the art of wine making and vineyard management. In the meantime, they discovered that long-time owners, Roger and Nancy Battistella were looking to retire and had listed Six Mile Creek Vineyard for sale. Mark was a quick study at Tug Hill and after just eighteen months, the Renodins were preparing for the purchase of their own winery. Since opening on July 30th, their main focus has been continued on pg 43

Home for the Holidays Around the holidays, the holidays extending roughly from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, we often hear, “Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men.” Let us reorganize. Good will precedes peace. Before we direct it toward others, we must feel good will toward ourselves. It is not easy. Often, we learn early to ignore our own feelings and perceptions to fit in at school and not make waves. People from different cultures are wired differently. On the day ISIS/Daesh terrorists attacked Paris, I had planned to attend a lecture at May Memorial Unitarian Church about secularism in the ISIS’s press release claiming responsibility for public sphere. (I won’t go on and on about right/left brain function here, but in a nutshell, the left-brain tends to control the right side of the body, facial recognition, speech, and memory formation. The left brain contains more neurons so left brain damage is likely to lead to more persistent problems such as depression and poor memory than is right brain damage. The right brain is the more abstract globally thinking hemisphere. Brain plasticity allows different parts of the brain to compensate for damaged and/or missing parts. Not all modern neuroscience publications agree on how our mind- body connections function as they do. Early physicians such as Hippocrates and Galen wrote of the effects of head trauma on behavior yet for millennia, people persisted in trying to knock sense into each other’s crania. Extremists in Pakistan destroy Buddhist statuary and shoot Muslim girls on their way to school. All of these attacks are target enlightenment. Medieval thinking cannot address modern challenges. Whenever one’s first impulse is to demolish someone else, that is medieval thinking. Medieval thinking killed a young man at the Word of Life Christian Church in New Hartford New York. Medieval thinking builds walls and often behind those walls, ideologues violate personal boundaries to control minds and create angry followers who lash out not at those who control them but at some “other” over there, or over here. I am generally a peace person and sometimes people devoted to peace on earth are prone to stuffing feelings, swallowing words and encouraging fellow travelers to do the same. All I Want for Christmas is a Gadget I know, I know... everyone has a list of recommended tech gifts for that techie person on their gift list for the holidays. Instead of specific recommendations, I’m going to instead list the technological gadgets that, should a loved one not have them - you find a way to get them geared up! Now, granted, everyone has different skill sets when it comes to gadgetry, and while I hate to admit this, it seems to be at least in some ways related to, ahem, age. Children “get” pinching, swiping, and tapping. They do. I have no idea, but clearly, HCI (Human Computer Interface) people understand something elemental about the way we interact with devices that respond to touch, typing, and voice commands. So do children. Adults who have grown up with dials (phone, television, radio) and even push buttons, are less likely to Intuit the Interface. Still, with a little patience and practice, even the oldest of us can become adept enough to enjoy the digital age. First and foremost, of course, is a smart phone. This is not, Uncle Joe, the same thing as a “cell phone.” A cell phone will make and receive calls, and will also typically create and receive texts. Believe it or not, there are still some dinosaur cell phones around that do just that and not much more. Smart phones, on the other hand, operate on the same general principle (except when near a WiFi connection), but do OH so much more. Essentially, they are little computers with a significantly more limited storage, but a significantly wider range than a desktop or laptop. They can be used for the obvious phone calling and texting, but can store data, take photos, play games, and do about a thousand different things depending on the app (application) you have added for your convenience or pleasure. The form factor (the fact that they are small in both screen and keyboard) limits their usefulness as a fully functional computer, but that’s really about it. The big advantage they have, of course, is that they are connected via cell to not only your cell phone functionality, but also to your data plan - so they can send and receive data. That means you can take a photo and text it to someone, or upload it to Facebook; you can search the web; you can send and receive emails and perform a number of other functions that in the “olden” days (I am not sure how many years constitutes “olden” any more, but I’m guessing it’s less than 10) only a proper computer could do. (Expect to pay: depends on the plan you sign up for, but about $200-300 is not unusual.) A tablet device, like a Kindle or iPad. Why? Because they are so useful and entertaining! For the most part, they will not replicate the value of a laptop or desktop computer, largely, again, because of the limitations of the input (the keypad). Still, I have both written and edited using a tablet version of Office, and certainly you can use these devices for emailing, web searching, and even photos (though they are a bit awkward for that purpose, and here the phone has the advantage). It is possible to get a keyboard for these devices, and a kind of docking station that makes them more useful for general purpose computing. And I prefer to not use my tablet on my data plan - so unless I’m in a WiFi enabled area, I can only use it locally (thus, no Internet). But for reading books (you can carry literally dozens with you in a small device), games, music, listening to books, watching a downloaded movie - even if you’re not online you can still enjoy all these features. Most of these devices will also connect to the Internet via your phone-as-hotspot, so if you’re desperate for both the size of the tablet and the data-plan of the phone - you’re all set. A nonWiFi enabled device is usually less expensive, as well. (Again, depending on what features and how much memory, your price will vary - but a decent Kindle can be had, without WiFi, for relatively little.) A Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, Smart TV or similar. With these devices, you can ac-

cess Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, or any other streaming service - and watch shows at your convenience. No, it’s not identical to cable TV, DVR, or On Demand. The delivery date won’t be the same - but for many, if you can stand to wait a few months, you can get the same content without necessarily subscribing to cable or premium channels. Each has slightly different features and benefits, so you’d need to review them to choose which would best serve the person on your gift list. (Chromecast devices are under $50, not including required WiFi access.) A portable DVD player or kid’s Kindle (or similar). Taking a trip. Tired mom or dad. Busy with a project. Enough said. TERMINATOR GENISYS When Arnold Schwarzenegger
stepped away from public office in 2011 and made his return to the silver screen a short time later, it seemed inevitable that the action star would once again step into his role as the Terminator. There were some questions surrounding this resurrection, however, due in large part to the fact that the series had already been given the reboot treatment with the 2009 film, TERMINATOR SALVATION. Despite the success of the Christian Bale, Sam Worthington-led endeavor, Paramount gambled on the belief that people still wanted to see Arnold TERMINATOR GENISYS- D grab a shotgun and proclaim, “I’ll be back.” And, sure enough, this summer, another chapter of the TERMINATOR saga was released. TERMINATOR: GENISYS was easily one of the biggest disappoints of the summer. The time-travelling action-extravaganza was as lifeless and uninspired as blockbusters get. While mechanical hands and chrome-plated heads were ground breaking and awe inspiring in the early 90’s, in today’s modern moviemaking world, they fail to illicit any sense of wonderment. Combine this with the by-thenumbers action sequences and recycled plot-devices, and you have a full-fledged flop on your hands. After the evil Skynet snuffs out the majority of the human population and enslaves those who survived the catastrophic onslaught of violence, it is apparent that the artificial intelligence beings mean to take over the entire planet. There are, however, pockets of people who were able to somehow navigate their way through this world of ruin, and remain free from the suffocating grasp of the machines. This rebellion is led by John Carter (Jason Clarke) who stands at humanity’s last chance of salvation. TERMINATOR fans know this character well, as he has stood as the central figure of importance in each chapter of the franchise. The film begins with a quick introduction to the annihilation of our planet, including the obligatory destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge. Through a voiceover, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) explains how he was saved as a child by John, and that the two of them became family. Reese knew that the fate of our species rested on the shoulders of his savior, and that the time had come to carry out a full-fledged attack. The duo, along with hundreds of others, attack the Skynet facility. While they are successful in destroying the program, they were not able to do so before a failsafe was put into motion. They quickly realize that a Terminator has been sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) in order to squash the revolution before its hero could even be born. As a result, Kyle is sent back in time to stop this from happening. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb to say that this plot is probably going to sound pretty familiar. It, in essence, has been at the heart of the entire series up until this point. This time around, when Reese arrives in 1984, he discovers that Sarah is already up to speed with what is going on, and she is even travelling with a T-800 machine that she has lovingly named “Pops.” This particular T-800, of course, is Arnold. This incarnation is a cute and cuddly version of the monster that
appeared in James Cameron’s initial film, and has effectively lost all of the menace and fear he evoked the first time around. His one-liners and quips are there, but his intimidating savagery is not. I realize that it may seem absurd to blast a film for being unoriginal when it stands as the fourth installment of a continuing saga, but there at least needs to be an attempt to do something new. This simply doesn’t happen. Aside from desecrating a character that has been the tent-pole of the entire franchise (and I’m not referring to the T-800), there are action sequences that have been done better by other productions, and a plot that feels like a convoluted attempt to garner a few more sequels and paychecks. Despite the film’s success overseas, its lackluster performance at the domestic box-office may be the ultimate thing that destroys this faltering franchise.
VACATION
Considering the continuing infatuation that Hollywood has with reboots and sequels, it came as no surprise when the announcement that another VACATION movies was slated to be released in the summer of 2015. Instead of the Griswold’s hitting the road and heading out to a new, albeit disastrous locale, they were going back to the place where it all began; Wallyworld. And, instead of the intrepid Clark (Chevy Chase) at the helm of the inevitably zany vacay, this time, it was Rusty (Ed Helms) who stood as the bumbling patriarch of his clan. It should have served as a troubling sign that from the very beginning, that of all the places in the world for the family to take VACATION- D+ a vacation, they were going to the same place that kicked everything off in 1983. This, more than any other device in recent memory, was proof that there wasn’t going to be a whole lot of ingenuity this time around. I did like the fact that Helms stood as the lead in the film, and I thought that, at the very least, he would provide a number of laughs even if the screenplay were to be less than spectacular. Given the unabashed hilarity he delivered as Andy Bernard in the THE OFFICE, combined with his understated turn in JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME, there was every reason to believe that he would find a way to successfully execute the daunting task of stepping out from behind Chase’s considerable shadow. There is no denying that there are some laugh-out-loud moments in VACATION, and these are mostly thanks to Helms delivery on subpar material. It is out of sheer will and determination that these fleeting moments struck gold, because everything in between is pretty painful to bear. Along for the ride to Wallyworld is Rusty’s wife, Debbie (Christina Applegate) and their two sons, James (Skyler Gisondo) and Kevin (Steele Stebbins). Their rental car is a gas-guzzling death trap, Debbie wants nothing to do with Wallyworld, and Kevin is constantly assaulting James (physically, verbally, and mentally). They make stops along the way at Debbie’s old sorority, then to a backwoods pond for private swim, and even end up visiting grandma (Beverly D’Angelo) and grandpa (Chase) Griswold. These detours, obviously, were easy ways to throw in scenes that revolved around beer chugging, vomiting, and raw sewage. The gags were spectacularly unfunny and desperate, and served as a perfect encapsulation of the movie as a whole. Lazy, telegraphic moments that were neither entertaining, nor humorous. By the time the family arrives at Clark and Ellen’s home, viewers may arrive at the understandable conclusion that nostalgia alone would make the scene serve as the stand-out of the production. Instead, it is surprisingly awkward. While proving that the film could have somehow been even worse if Chase had been given more screen time, it forces the viewer to hope, wish, and pray that Uncle Eddie would come bursting into the room at any second. Sad spoiler alert: He doesn’t. While I certainly didn’t have any lofty expectations for VACATION, I never thought it would be as bad as this. This was a chance to re-establish the franchise for today’s modern audiences, but instead, leaves the viewer wishing that had picked up the original classic instead.

Six Mile Winery continued from pg 32 to get acquainted with the Six Mile Creek team, both retail and production, and to get a sense of what direction to take the business in. For now, they have been working together to assess the company’s needs and to formulate a plan for moving forward. Exercising her retail expertise, Amy has been tirelessly working to completely redecorate and re-merchandise the entire tasting room so as to take full advantage of their large retail space. One of their first initiatives is to expand the list of products offered. Winemaker Paul King, is working on producing Six Mile Creeks first sparkling wine, which should be ready for bottling early summer of 2016. Also, in order to accommodate an increase in output, they hope to expand their production space, with a direct focus on their distillation facility. Mark feels that the best opportunity for growth is within their distilled product line. They produce a full list of distilled products from grapes, or finished wine. Currently, since their production volume of distilled products is minimal, Six Mile Creek does not sell spirits through wholesale, only via the tasting room. Within the next year, the team would like to have increased production to the point of distribution. There are also plans to add Rum to their list of offerings. The production team has been experimenting with different yeast and molasses combinations and expects to run their first full batch within the next few weeks. After spending a few months in oak, the rum should be ready, along with the sparkling wine, by next summer. Six Mile Creek Vineyard is located on Slaterville Road (Route 79), just 3.5 miles from downtown Ithaca. On Thursday and Sunday nights from June through September, they host live music on their deck overlooking the vineyard sunset. The property is available for weddings and private events up to 60 inside and 200, outside. The winery overlooks a valley, a pond and rolling fields of vineyards, making it a wonderful setting for all types of functions. There are variations on this theme, of course, but Nest is one of the better known devices. This device allows you to, via your phone or internet connection, control various functions at your house. So, let’s say you want to turn the heat up because the temperature has dropped and you want it nice and warm when you get there. You can access your Nest controls and tell the thermostat what you’d like. It can sense all sorts of home conditions - is a door open? Check the connected cameras for security. Take a look at your home energy consumption. Maybe you have an elderly person in your family that needs a quick check from time to time? ($200+) So I guess that brings us around to the beginning. Holiday Sugar Cookies Ingredients:

COOKIES: 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 egg 1-1/2 teaspoons almond extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt FROSTING: 6 tablespoons butter, softened 3 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 to 4 tablespoons 2% milk Food coloring of your choice, optional Colored sugar, edible glitter, nonpareils or frosting of your choice, optional
2. Preheat oven to 375°. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with floured 2-1/2in. cookie cutters. Place on greased baking sheets. Bake 7-9 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
Directions: 1. In a large bowl, cream butter and confectioners’ sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and extracts. Combine flour and salt; add to creamed
