Stephen Phillips is a Pop/Funk artist from Syracuse, New York with a sound like no other Stephen first showcased his original sound in 2018 with his debut five song EP, VACATE. Created almost entirely in his friends basement studio. This EP featured pop-centric vocals and hooks while capturing his soulfulness. In 2019, Stephen released two standalone singles, “Go Bye Bye!” and “The Letter”, before releasing his six song pop/funk album BIG EYES & ROSY CHEEKS. “This project was a game changer for me,” Stephen says. “It takes my style in a new direction. It’s really a perfect hybrid of a lot of different influences of mine.” With sounds ranging from acoustic campfire-y music to upbeat, dance tunes chock full of 80’s synths, slap bass lines and rich vintage vocals, Stephen continues to push his own bounds of creativity, writing music that is meant to inspire others and create a unique experience for everyone who tunes in to listen.

I would categorize my music under the genre of “Pop-Funk”. However there’s definitely influences from Gospel, some R&B, I even have some folk influence in a few songs. I try to have variety in everything that I write.

Chuck Schiele: If I could shake hands with you, I would. Until then, my benevolent greetings are extended to your general direction.... Stephen Phillips: Nice to meet you, too, Chuck. Thanks for reaching out. CS: How did you get into music in the first place? SP: How I got started in music is a big question to unpack for me. Music was something that I latched onto early on in childhood. Having a mother who played piano and who was a singer at our church meant I was always around it, always listening to my mom rehearse in our living room, always being a spectator to the live worship music at our church week in and week out. My parents tell me that when I was six months old they noticed I would do this thing with my hands that concerned them mainly because it was similar to something my sister did as a baby that wound up being a sign of her lifelong disability. My mom finally figured out that I would only do it whenever music was on. She noticed that I was keeping tempo. So from a super young age music has been a part of me. Throughout my life I’ve had different phases of things I wanted to do—stuff like comedy, magic, even boxing at one point. I started writing songs in sixth grade, normally for girls that I had crushes on. And I got heavily involved in playing on worship team at my church which is something that’s still huge in my life, today. What ultimately led me to want to pursue music full time was deciding to front a Pop-Funk band in high school. We played this big music festival at a Lafayette High School back in 2017 where we played for close to 300 high school students as well as families and faculty members. And when I hopped off the stage, I knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. From that point on I started getting really serious about writing and getting my solo career off the ground. CS: Characterize your music. SP: I would categorize my music under the genre of “Pop-Funk”. However there’s definitely influences from Gospel, some R&B, I even have some folk influence in a few songs. I try to have variety in everything that I write. CS: What and who inspires you? SP: What inspires me, truthfully, is thinking about my future. CS: Wow. I don’t really know you, yet. But, this answer tells me you’re a good artist. I

“Pursue music with everyting you got and don’t look back” figured you’d say, “Bruno Mars,” or something. Great answer. SP: Well, one of my biggest dreams in life to have a family of my own and I think the best way that I can honor my future family is to make sure that I can one day provide for them while doing what I love. And in the same breath I want to inspire my future kids to wholeheartedly pursue what they love too. As to the question of who inspires me, there are a bunch. I get inspiration from people like Ryan Tedder of One Republic, Charlie Puth, Jacob Collier, Bruno Mars... CS: Hahaha.... SP: ...DNCE, and many others. However: aside from celebrities, God inspires me,

Friends inspire me. The list could go on infinitely. CS: Nice. You just released a single. Please tell us the backstory. SP: I originally was writing that song as a (for lack of a better word) typical feel-good song. “Somethin’ bout the way that you feel making me believe love is real” were the first lyrics I wrote. But throughout the writing process, the inspiration for the song naturally shifted and I wound up writing about a time in my relationship where the future of the relationship was in question—where the

CS: Sounds like a song of personal strength and hope. Best wishes for success with it. Please share with us some of the highlights in your music career. SP: I’ll go with a Top 5 answer for this one, not in order. Selling out Redhouse Arts Center for my “Big Eyes & Rosy Cheeks” album release party, winning two SAMMY awards, being played on 95X Locals Only Spotlight, playing Funk n’ Waffles back in January to a crowd of over a hundred people, and playing Al’s Wine and Whiskey Lounge. There are so many more but I would say that those are my top highlights so far. CS: What do you have to say about Central New York music and its music community? SP: CNY music is definitely a pretty tight knit community. I remember starting out at open mic nights, being nervous that my music wouldn’t be noticed or even accepted. But then I met all of these amazing people from God knows how many vastly different walks of life that have done nothing but wholeheartedly support me since day one. I can say honestly I wouldn’t be anywhere close to where I am today without the community that is the CNY music scene.

CS: What’s your best advice for people choosing the life-in-music path? SP: Pursue it with everything you got and don’t look back. Stop having a “I’ll do that at some point” mindset and get into a “I’m doing this” mindset. Procrastination can be your biggest enemy,. And it can be caused by not feeling like your getting anywhere fast enough—by people telling you should “go get a real job” or “go to college.” Or even by being fearful that it won’t work out, or by not believing you’re good enough. But, here is what’s true for me and I believe this is true for several: I will be so much more content in life if I give it 100% and it doesn’t work out, rather then if I gave up before I even started and never tried at all. CS: Amen. What are you future plans from here? SP: Right now my team and I are working on producing several singles that will translate into a full length album in 2021 if all goes to plan. I plan to stick around Syracuse for a couple more years and then try and make the move down south where I can make some bigger connections and take my music to new heights and get closer to my end goal which is simply to do this full time. CS: How can we stay in touch with Stephen Phillips and his music endeavors? SP: Follow me on social media! You can follow me on Instagram @stephenphillipsmusic, you can also find me on Facebook and/or Youtube by searching “Stephen Phillips Music”. You can also check out my website “songsbytstephenphillips.com”. I’m always posting about new music, content and upcoming shows! CS: Well, Stephen, I always say that music has been one of my favorite ways to make friends. It’s been good meeting and chatting. I hope you stay well and that I see you out there, soon. SP: Thank you, Chuck. It’s been good talking with you, too. See you out there. -Chuck Schiele 858 663 9612 “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” ~Albert Einstein

SCOOB When analyzing pop culture longevity, it’s pretty tough to argue with the enduring staying power of Scooby-Doo. The personable pooch and his meddling companions first graced the small screen in 1969, and have entertaining generations ever since. From spin-offs, to direct-to-homevideo releases, to live action adaptations, the family friendly juggernaut has shown no sign of slowing for the past 50 years. The latest materialization comes in the form of SCOOB, an animated adventure that was supposed to open in OPEN 6 DAYS A WEEK ≈ MONDAY-SATURDAY theaters in May and was meant to launch a new Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe. Though it didn’t get the theatrical run that was originally intended, it has become an instant smash on video-ondemand platforms, where it has remained at the top of the charts since its release on May 15. The animation may be a bit flashier, the Westvale references might be a tad Since 1948 more timely (Simon Cowell is an actual character) and the soundtrack (Outkast! 2pac ft. Dr Dre!) may be a Lobster Tails, Fresh Scallops, Fried Shrimp, Cocktail bit more hip, but beyond Shrimp, Fried Smelt, Fried Calamari, King Crab Legs, Snow that, the simplistic formula Crab Clusters, Fried or Fresh Fish that has worked for the Thanks to Everyone who Voted Us past five decades trudges 2019 BEST PLACE FOR A FISH FRY! on. The ship of Shaggy and Scoob’s hero, the Blue Falcon (Mark Wahlberg) physics to chase one another through a series of doorways. Unlike most reboots, SCOOB give us an origin story in just about 10 minutes. After a brief introduction that shows of how lovable loaf Shaggy first met his beloved canine pal, we are then shown how the duo crossed paths with Fred, Velma, and Daphne and accidentally solved their first case. This is followed by a frame-by-frame recreation of the famous “Scooby-Doo, Where are You!” theme song, and then we get into the present story. When the snarky Simon Cowell meets with the crew to give an assessment on their current standing in the grand scheme of marketability, he proclaims that Shaggy (Will Forte) and Scooby (Frank Welker) bring absolutely nothing to the table. Scooby, at the very least, is like a mascot, and all Shaggy does is eat an absurd amount of food. Feeling dejected, the duo heads to a local bowling alley. While there, the pins come alive and a cavalcade of shape-shifting shenanigans ensues. The Mystery team looking for Shaggy and Scoob

SCOOB continued from pg 6 favorite crime fighter The Blue Falcon (Mark Wahlberg) and his trusty sidekick Dynomutt (Ken Jeong.) Believe it or not, there is actually a lot more of the plot to explain, but in the end, it doesn’t really matter, does it? The story within SCOOB was never going to be the make-or-break factor. The bottom line is, the gang starts searching for Scooby and Shaggy, and eventually, everyone finds themselves battling Dick Dastardly (Jason Isaacs) who is attempting to unlock a gate to the Underworld so he can recover his missing best pal. For those who aren’t sure who that is, I’ll leave it to you to figure it out, but I’ll let you know that it just so happens to be another Hanna-Barbera icon. Convoluted plotlines aside, SCOOB is plenty of fun. The cast list is rife with talent. Along with Forte, Wahlberg, and Isaacs, Zac Efron, Gina Rodriguez, Amanda Seyfried, and plenty more join in on the fun, providing clout without becoming distracting. While it may not deliver the same type of grand family entertainment as ONWARD or THE WILOUGHBYS, it is a nostalgia-based distraction that will engage youngsters, and provide their parents a chuckle or two. The SCOOBY-DOO franchise has always been gleefully self-aware, and that is certainly the case with this film. From a hilarious line addressing Shaggy’s use of the word “like,” to the plethora of Hanna-Barbera Easter eggs found throughout, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and never pretends to be anything that it’s not. I can imagine some parents getting upset over a couple of the jokes, and some of the sequences might be frightening for very young children, but hey, hasn’t that always been the forte of Scooby-Doo? Nightmare-inducing imagery with a logical explanation has worked for the last 50 years, so there’s no real reason to stop now. SCOOB- C+ (Available through multiple video-on-demand platforms.)

Munjed’s continued from pg 9 experience, Munjed’s has the perfect plate and the perfect atmosphere to meet your needs. At Munjed’s they have miraculously have managed to create an atmosphere where you could bring a date, a girl’s night out, or even a family dinner to introducing little ones to international cuisine. This atmosphere seems to have been cultivated by their trademark of “good food, good people, always.” Kyle and I went to Munjed’s on one of those “it’s wayyy too hot to cook” nights to grab some takeout. We started our meal with an appetizer platter that included Feta Cheese and Olives, Babaganouj, Tzatziki, Falafel, and pita. The babaganouj (Puree of charbroiled eggplant, tahini, lemon and garlic) was creamy and smoky and fantastic (especially topped with the feta and olives) and the falafel (mildly spiced, fried chickpea patties served with tahini sauce) was crunchy and perfectly fried (not at all greasy) and absolute perfection when dipped in the Tzatziki (yogurt, cucumber and garlic dip). For our dinner Kyle had the Munjed’s Combo- A bed of hommus (puree of chickpeas, tahini, lemon, and garlic) topped with sirloin chawirma alongside falafel patties, grapeleaves,

Greek salad

fresh tabouli salad (mixture of parsley, bulgur wheat, tomato, scallions, mint, olive oil and lemon) and grilled chunks of shish kabobs. This combo was truly a little bit of everything Munjed’s had to offer as far as Middle Eastern cuisine is concerned; they also offer a variation made with chicken, the Majida’s Chicken Combo. Everything was cooked and spiced to perfection and Kyle cleaned the plate, literally, with the pita bread! I decided on the Greek Fest Combo, a selection of the best of Munjed’s Greek cuisine including a wedge of spanakopita (Filo pastry dough, filled with spinach, feta cheese, and baked until golden brown, served with tzatziki sauce), slices of savory gyro meat (lean blend of lamb and beef carved off the rotisserie), served with Greek salad and tzatziki sauce. Every bite was absolutely superb. We couldn’t pass it up so we split a slice of Baklava Cheesecake, vanilla based cheesecake topped with walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon that is then it is drizzled with a sugar and rosewater syrup and a classic Baklava, with Filo layered with walnuts and drizzled with a sugar and rose water syrup. Both were phenomenal and worth the trip on their own. Munjed’s is the perfect spot for any occasion. They also offer off site catering and on site banquets! Be sure to check out their party room for you next event once everything is back to “normal”. They have plenty of room for your special occasion and they are the perfect, unique venue for your upcoming event, shower, birthday party, retirement party, rehearsal dinner, or any event! Top 10 NBA Players of All-Time. As of this writing, we have been in quarantine for around eight weeks without sports. So we watch The Last Dance, watch old games (not me), read articles and books and…..make lists! ESPN recently came out with their top NBA players of all-time and of course it created controversy, which is what lists are intended to do (Russell Westbrook at 42 would be my bone to pick, as he should be way lower). Well, I haven’t done a lot of basketball historical stuff at the pro level, so I am doing a Top 10 NBA All-Time player list here. The list is based on criteria that includes the quality of the overall player, overall success like winning titles, because that is hugely important in basketball where one player can make such a difference, and overall impact on the game. No era-based stuff here. When you get to these short lists of the elite players, they all could play in any era. Enjoy. Rant. Agree. Disagree. Hit me on Twitter @MikeLSports with anything. You know I will respond.

Business of Interest by NANCY ROBERTS

Phoenix Sports Restaurant Thinking over how to best express the essence of the Phoenix Sports Restaurant, I realized it was this: in this challenging time, especially for restaurants, owner Mike Lattimore not only took the time to chat with me (while preparing meals for take-out and delivery), and paused for a moment during our conversation to take a call. It was a customer with an order. In a very friendly, unflustered, professional, and personable way, he took the order, offered a selection of sides, gave the customer a time for pick-up, and returned to our chat. When you consider the sheer number of offerings on the restaurant’s extensive and extremely tempting menu, and that he is chief cook and delivery person during this period, I knew in a moment I was talking to a pro - and one truly devoted to his business. The restaurant business requires special care and handling during the best of times it’s a constant juggling of skills, from the obvious like having a concept and a great menu and a fun and pleasing atmosphere, to the less visible, like ordering the food, hiring and training staff, even seeing to it that codes are met and menus are up-to-date. While restaurants and bars in New York State are limited in service during this flu season, they are by no means closed. Lattimore, while missing his regular operation, told me, “I try to look at a time like this as an opportunity to re-invent yourself, even if it’s only temporary. We’ve kept every item on our menu - and it’s a big menu - but tried to make the most of our take-out and delivery business working with a skeleton crew.” He also

Open for takeout and delivery! acknowledges that the temporary restrictions mean looking for additional ways to do business. “We offer meals delivered to 3rd shift workers, for example. We’ll deliver to them so it’s hot and fresh, even if that means 2 a.m. Right now we’re delivering to all of Schroeppel, a portion of Clay, also the BaldwinsvilleLysander area, or even further if people call ahead and we can plan on it.” Lattimore has been in the restaurant business most of his career, owning the Phoenix Sports Restaurant for the last ten years. During “normal” times, the restaurant is a casual, comfortable spot where customers can go for lunch or dinner, and expect a range of food choices from salads to steaks, fried fish to prime rib, even unusual selections like frog’s legs, liver and onions, Spanish rice and Goulash - their favorite drinks, OTB, 150 TV screens with sports of all kinds, and friendly service. “All of my staff are trained to remember our customers,” Lattimore tells me. “If they have a favorite beer, we’ll have it ready. They’re important to us, and we want them to know it.” While major event dates - like the Kentucky Derby, a big day for the restaurant - are changed or in flux right now, the location is typically known for catering

Phoenix Sports Restaurant continued from pg 13 and parties, and has a steady stream of celebrations and events. It’s similarly famous for a range of “all you can eat” options, including such popular choices as steak, spaghetti and meatballs, wings, and the restaurant’s famous frog’s legs. In fact, whatever you’re in the mood for, chances are the Phoenix will have it. And the portions are generous. “A single serving will give most people dinner and often lunch the next day,” Lattimore says. Discussing the frog’s legs, Lattimore stressed the importance of area restaurants looking out for one another in this difficult time. “I got a call from another restaurant

We were happy to share. We know it’s going to take some time to get back to our regular routine of business, but in the meantime, we want to make sure our customers are taken care of, enjoy their meals, and stay in the habit of patronizing local restaurants.” He goes on to add that while things make be different for the time being, the “buy local, shop local” emphasis, and the fact that people can’t go out to socialize as easily right now, has actually resulted in new customers finding local restaurants and becoming fans. “I get my own meals a couple times a week from other area restaurants. After cooking and delivering from early morning on, it’s nice to order something someone else has prepared, too, and it’s a way of supporting other restaurants in the area,” Lattimore tells me.

Little neck clams, shrimp, scallops, haddock and more! Besides abiding by all the necessary precautions, in an abundance of consideration for customers, each morning Lattimore posts the day’s special offerings on Facebook, posts other area restaurant links to his page, and does not take online ordering. That last is really a concern Lattimore feels for his customers. “I know it’s a busy time, and we’re operating on pick-up and delivery, and as I said, with a small crew. I don’t want people to wait longer than they’d like for their meal. The computer understands how long it takes to prepare a burger and fries, but not how long the wait might be if it’s an unusually busy day. By talking directly to the customer, I can give them an accurate time.” “I want our customers to know that we’re here for them now, and when all this settles down. We’re really grateful that they’ve been there for us, and we’ll do everything we can to give them the best food and service we can.”

change. It’s easier to keep doing what we’ve always done. We need to find a simple way to break the endless by D. Johnston cycle of correcting one swing flaw, only to have it supplanted by another. The ultimate goal is to unlock your true potential that lies beyond conscious thought. Have you ever hit a perfect shot? Can you recall what you were thinking? The chances are, that you managed to forget swing mechanics for one and a half Are you familiar with the expression that “golf is ninety percent mental?” Assuming the seconds and just hit the damn ball! Here are three steps for helping you conquer the insidious habit of reinforcing swing expression is true, then why does traditional golf instruction focus exclusively on swing flaws. mechanics?

Golf

Limitless Golf:

The Power of Beliefs

Despite quantum advances in equipment technology and millions of YouTube videos on proper technique, the “average” golfer struggles to break ninety. This trend hasn’t changed appreciably in the past forty years. One possible explanation is the (unconscious) belief that focusing on mistakes will eventually lead to permanent improvement. In actual practice, this method simply reinforces the belief that a student isn’t good enough to move beyond a certain level. It’s a vicious circle. For the majority of once-a-week golfers, the tendency to focus on mistakes is automatic. Dr. Karl Morris, Europe’s Leading Mind Coach, uses the analogy of a highway. The more often you travel a particular route, the easier it becomes to select it automatically. It becomes a habit. This applies to our mental roadmap as well. Our nervous system has two basic functions; to reduce conscious thought and avoid

Step One: Awareness

This is critical. You must become aware of the automatic tendency to figure out the flaws in technique. Assuming you have solid fundamentals, your ability to quickly “forget” a poor shot is the first key to improvement.

Step Two: Interrupt The Pattern

Develop a method of quickly interrupting the pattern of recalling mistakes. Obviously, this is easier said than done. The key is to find something simple that doesn’t require conscious thought. One method is to move your body in a unique way.

Step Three: Lock-In Your Best Shots

Whenever you hit a good shot, do something to reinforce the feeling. You could twirl the club or hold your finish position. Do you recall the famous Tiger fist pump? The idea is to lock the feeling into your nervous system so you can recall it quickly in the future.

Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN

America A Forlorn Democracy There are certain rules that humanity must follow for justice to be. In the United States Congress and Supreme Court, the most vital truth of them all has been absent and may well, when all is said and done, be the root cause of the end of civil society. In the midst of the finest words ever penned, “The Constitution of the United States of America” the absence of adhering guidance allowed chaos to rein. Donald Trump has brought this glaring truth to the surface: “All the Evil in Mankind needs to be the monster that it is, to be told that it can.” “Democracy: A Government by the people. Rule of the majority. A government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.” This is tough talk regarding our Country. It hurts to write it. But we have let the power of Patriotism keep us in the dark long enough. America has failed as a Free and Democratic Land: Voting is the heartbeat of a Democracy. Before we discuss the extremely disturbing state of our Electoral system let me give you an example: You can liken our Voting System to a horse race with rules designed to appease you

and still allow for every form of crookedness and deceit. Say the horses are lined up, all ready to go, waiting for the gun. Now let’s review the many months preceding the race. (These things happen, even in the Triple Crown). Behind the scenes: A few of the owners met in advance and agreed upon who they thought should win. A few others schemed on their own. A few owners secretly utilized anabolic steroids and other drugs to make their horse run faster. One made a deal to lose and gave his horse too much water, another used a laxative. Another agreed to a slow start all but insuring a loss. Often trainers and owners misused medications or presented a fast horse as slow to discourage betting as they bet big when odds rose. Others gave money to competing jockeys and promises of great futures and reward if a particular horse won. Everyone on the inside knows but no one talks about it. The public is duped. Now the question is: Are you comfortable with the fairness of the outcome? Certainly not as you can clearly see it was fixed. Tragically this kind of horse racing in America is fairer than our Electoral system. Our Democracy is corrupt throughout. Simply riddled with distortion, bribery, lies and cheating. Did you ever wonder why so many inadequate politicians are around for decades? They call it the advantage of incumbency. That is all part of the con. Process is designed for this to happen. In America most elections that are won have the same effect as a coup d’etat due to electoral fraud, both legal and illegal. Gerrymandering is perhaps the most glaringly disgusting legal process in our system. This is where parties design maps within areas that contain their own voters. The goal of Gerrymandering is so the rich can decide which Republicans and which Democrats become and remain our leaders circumventing Electoral integrity. How damn blatantly corrupt can you get. This alone removes democracy and it is only the beginning. Thanks to a political and biased Supreme Court we have campaign finance law that allows Jeff Bezos of Amazon, the richest man on earth or the Coke Brothers of FOX news fame, among the richest in the world, to funnel millions at a time for candidates that support their individual thinking. The absurdity of the partisan Supreme Court, ruling that Corporations are People is beyond any measure of justice and defies their purpose for existence. Apart from extreme wealth, every other American has lost the power of their influence. The effect of a twenty-dollar donor and a million-dollar donor for influence is beyond extreme. They are eons beyond comparable consideration. Not to mention the million-dollar donor gets to decide on law. Campaign finance law alone is

so insidious it removes legitimacy from democracy. It is the root cause sublimating the Constitution and has removed the pursuit of equality and greatness from mankind. It is the essence of the purest form of bribery designed for the few at the expense of 320 million Americans. Politicians literally kowtow to and reward wealthy donors and allow them to dictate their own regulation and law that favor them. (Volumes of law is written by the donor/corporation and passed unread for money.) Just with Gerrymandering and Campaign Finance you can easily see we are not even close to a legitimate democracy. We are an Oligarchy (Governed by the rich). We are third world corrupt with Gerrymandering, bribery and election fraud and manipulation forced upon us against our will. Much of our Government is autocracy (Mitch McConnell) with a veneer of useless false integrity, the U.S. Senate. We have no efficiencies to protect ourselves from foreign interference. Not even when an incumbent President solicits and accepts foreign election assistance. And what I have explained is just part of our corrupt system. In recent years hacking, presenting lies and distortion have entered the high-tech scene and have a very alterable effect on Electoral outcomes. American (against ourselves), Russian and Chinese hackers are the most successful but others are everywhere. Hacking is copiously prevalent. Foreign influence likely swayed the last Presidential election rendering every vote moot. Voting machines are easy to hack and are hacked (just research a little, the stories are legion). Voting machines are not regulated. Your local technician can fix the vote and many do. Trump won Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pa by a combined number of 77,744 votes. Fixing one precinct in each state would easily provide this small win. And most likely did. The private companies that run our elections are above the law, (regulation serves more as permission for corruption than guidance) in a way that hides fraud and they are not required to divulge “Secrets”. The CEO of Diebold, (one of the largest voting machine manufacturers) while dining with Bush II in Crawford Tx, promised him Ohio (a swing state) which he needed to win. He won Ohio by a small margin. For starters google “Hacking Democracy”. Examples are endless. Because fraud is pervasive and shocking and our system is a lie. Another blatant crooked endeavor that is common is voting locations. Often the number of locations and actual location are designed to prevent voting. This, within gerrymandered districts lays absurdity upon absurdity. For example, in poor areas with poor transportation the distance needed to prevent participation is determined and voting locations are placed beyond this point. Also, fewer locations are used to cause waits of many hours which discourages participation. Voter ID laws are designed to discourage participation and some states where it is required the process is designed to make it very difficult to acquire. The threat of incarceration keeps many away from the polls. Even parking ticket threats.

any lie, blatant or otherwise, that supports the Republican Party. Others largely support the Democratic party and also gravely lack integrity. Sacrificing right for ratings or agenda is a constant for all of them. You are not a priority. They design your vote with omission of truth, propaganda, distortion and personal view. Long before Trump, who is an abomination, the media and our electoral system were an abomination. These are some common ways our system is twisted: Electorate manipulation, manipulation of demography, disenfranchisement, intimidation (showing up armed or excessive police presence etc. etc.) legal threats, violence or the threat of violence, all kind of attacks on polling places, coercion, bribery and vote buying to name a few. Everything you read throughout this article is applied rendering the United States of America, once the great hope for mankind, a disgraceful sham. The good have given the evil of mankind free reign and he has accepted. Voting in its entirety has fraudulent outcome as with all the corruption that is in place it can be no other way. What you have is the rich and powerful in a corrupt contest to sway your vote. Either way, you wind up with their candidate that will be complicit and perpetuate all that is wrong. I weep for every young solider, and I hear the last scream as they died for greatness. We have let greatness slip through our fingers and the replacement will be increased violence, disruption and hell. We are living the first chapter of consequence. Our Founders knew that it is values, not policies or economies, but values that allow all other good to flow. They gave us a chance.

The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

The Plague by Albert Camus Do you react to coincidence, serendipity, an alignment of the stars? I’m half kidding, but the half serious part came across a photo of Albert Camus, a French Algerian writer, philosopher and journalist who lived from 1911-1960, won a Nobel Prize, and embraced the philosophy of “absurdism.” I kept looking at his photo and wondering why he looked so familiar when it dawned on me there was a strong likeness to Elon Musk, engineer, industrialist, and creator of PayPal and the Tesla electric car - among many other things. Aside from the similarity of looks, the two men share a quirky outlook, a unique personality, and a difficult-todescribe genius. In high school, one of my teachers (I’m tempted to call them “Professors” a la Hogwarts, since they were far

more than run-of-the-mill teachers) introduced us to Camus via “The Myth of Sisyphus,” as a way of discussing the philosophy of absurdism. Another had us read, in French, “The Plague,” (La Peste). It so happens that “Albert Camus The Plague” is trending third on Google search just now, in honor of Covid-19, no doubt. “The Plague” was a book Camus was no doubt born to write, or better put, his life drove him to write. Born in French Algeria, his father died in WWI, so the young Camus never really knew him. Though his marked talents for both his studies and football marked him as outstanding, he contracted tuberculosis in secondary school - a Sisyphus diagnosis that would follow him throughout his life. Camus was in many ways a contradiction: an anarchist who enthusiastically embraced the teamwork on the football field - in fact celebrated it - a revolutionary who was also a moralist (and a serial cheater in his relationships), a pacifist who tried multiple times to join the Army during WWII. Though he’s widely known as an absurdist, he’s also classified as an existentialist, a label he vehemently rejected. “The Plague” is the story, told by an unknown narrator, of a plague (which turns out to be the bubonic plague) which sweeps through the Algerian town of Oran. The several main characters are all male, and all seem to be a slice of the personality of Camus himself, as they confront the plague, fear, political/civic behavior, and death, from their varying points of view and capacities as doctor, wanderer, failed writer, priest, and others. People who have sought out the book no doubt to compare it to our own experiences as we deal with the life-altering effects of a pandemic won’t come away satisfied. As an absurdist, Camus finds life and its vicissitudes pointless - other than simply, like Sisyphus, rolling your particular rock endlessly up a hill: it’s your job. Another popular philosopher of modern times, Jordan Peterson, has famously suggested we “pick up the largest burden you can carry and walk forward.” He doesn’t explain where you’ll get, or even imply that there is some end-game to the march “forward.” Simply that our job is to walk forward, roll the rock up, deal with illness and death which are life, which are the Plague. The book follows the movement of the plague as it first appears, grows in strength against people’s best efforts to contain it, as the city is forcibly isolated and people begin to rebel and attempt to sneak - or fight their way - out, and finally as it ebbs and ends, leaving people damaged, ennobled, rejoicing or despairing, having been transformed or entrenched as a result of their experience. Throughout the book, Camus’ own struggles with what he believes about the nature and purpose of life are played out in his various characters’ reactions to their plight, and it will no doubt give those who choose to read it plenty to consider as they contrast our own less lethal but certainly transformative experience.

Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

Ask About the Basics Hopefully, things will be approaching some semblance of normalcy soon. Many of you have skipped doctors visits of all sorts or tried the telemedicine visit. Oh , don’t go feeling sorry for us healthcare professionals. I’m not writing this column to drum up business. As long as you insist on eating at McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King etc., etc., etc., healthcare is never going to be wanting for business. As long as you continue to follow the current published dietary guidelines I will be busy for the foreseeable future. So will all the surgeons and other doctors. So when you do, in fact, go back and have an in-person visit let me walk you through what you should really be focused on. Of course you should talk about your overall health and that has to involve some conversation about your national status. You can look at this in three broad categories of intake ; proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Protein is very easy to measure; both total protein and albumin in a simple and inexpensive blood test . But to measure the individual amino acids is much more expensive and complex so it’s the cheapest component to test for but it’s almost always normal so unless it’s out of range it doesn’t tell you much. Moving now to measuring how you’re doing in terms of your carbohydrate intake is the test for insulin and sugar. A simple mathematical calculation provides your level of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance equals metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome equals increased risk of heart attack, cancer, stroke, early death, obesity, dementia, arthritis etc. Have I left anyone out? By measuring your insulin resistance you will get a sense of how your body is handling sugar / carbohydrates. This blood sample needs to be drawn while fasting. But it can be done over and over again to assess your response to changes in your diet. This gives you yet another independent, reliable, and validated tool to tell us, like, Hemoglobin A1c etc of how you are doing in your management of sugar. The insulin level is going to be abnormal long before the hemoglobin A1c and continued on pg 20

Stay Safe and Healthy from our family at Ask About the Basics continued from pg 19 blood sugar tests are abnormal. Your doctor or healthcare provider hasn’t ordered it because they have focused on the sugar but your sugars will be in a normal range for years while your insulin is elevated. It’s not an expensive test. It’s very, very simple to interpret ….the lower the number the better. Finally it comes to measuring the fats in your diet and your fat management. It’s easy for your doctor to measure your cholesterol and of course the minute they do they focus on the number and if the number is over 200 you’re on a statin. Unfortunately, the cholesterol hypothesis has been demonstrated to be false. The article referenced below is just one of many …. an up-to-date review of 19 different studies which, when examined, showed an inverse relationship between your bad cholesterol (the LDL) and all-cause mortality meaning the higher your bad cholesterol the longer you lived. It’s painful for me as a 30-year healthcare provider to have to admit that what I’ve been promoting for years is just, in fact ,not true. So when I order your cholesterol panel I’m not concerned at all about your cholesterol unless it’s too low but I am worried about your triglyceride to HDL relationship because this, I think, really reflects your metabolic state. The higher the triglyceride to HDL ratio the worst your metabolic state. You are probably not focusing on this when you review your labs with your provider. This concept is really not new and it is part of the very definition for metabolic syndrome. Here’s the link to the article regarding the relationship between LDL cholesterol and mortality. https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/6/6/e010401 But wait, there’s more to explore in the world of fats and your diet. You must work with your doctor to measure your omega-6 and Omega-3 ratio. The omega-6 is the anti-inflammatory essential fatty acid and the omega-6 is the inflammatory essential fatty acid. Examples of the major Omega-3s include EPA and DHA. These are found in fish oil, fish etc, Examples of the Omega-6 fatty acid would be arachidonic acid which along with cholesterol EPA and DHA makeup vital fats for your brain. It’s important though that they’re balanced and for most of us we are way out of balance due of course to the diet. The optimum Omega 6 and 3 ratio is 1:1 but most people have a 5 : 1 or 10 : 1 ratio which means that every cell in their body is affected by this distortion. This ratio is easy to measure and is actionable. Cut down the corn oil, the canola oil, the vegetable oils and cut down the fried foods. That will lower your omega-6 as you raise omega-3s by either having more fish, nuts etc. in your diet or by supplementing and, of course, I recommend cod liver oil just like Grandma used to do. So now I’ve given you the information and the rationale to go to your doctors and have a proactive visit about what’s really important; these basic elemental markers of your nutritional status. If you’re not measuring your insulin resistance and you’re not measuring the Omega 6:3 ratio and you’re not measuring the triglyceride HDL ratio you’re flying in the dark with your health. Better fasten your seatbelt. Better yet... fast! Luckily, all of those measures are completely controlled by you and your diet. These are simple inexpensive tests you can have repeated over time to measure your success in other than just the inches on your waist. These tests are reliable , usually covered by insurance , and give you a way to keep yourself honest. Now go get what you need! Until next month, get well and stay well. JT BARRY MD

Waco There have been numerous explorations of what unfolded at the Mount Carmel Compound in Waco, Texas in 1993, though the truth of what truly transpired will likely never be known. In January of 2018, the rebranded Spike TV, now known as The Paramount Network, began airing the limited series WACO, which stood as its first major release. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Julia Garner, Andrea Riseborough, Paul Sparks, John Leguizamo, Melissa Benoist and many others, it was a dramatic interpretation of the cataclysmic events, as pieced together from the memoirs of one of the survivors, and the FBI negotiator who attempted to bring the standoff to a peaceful conclusion. In a compound with no running water, David Koresh and his congregation live their lives as a communal unit. Koresh, who is the sole authority figure, preaches to his followers for hours at a time, and the Branch Davidians take solace and joy in the fact that they have found a true messiah. Though his methods may be unconventional (physicality between men and women is prohibited, with the exception of David who can marry teenagers and impregnate anyone he sees fit) his passion and reverence for the Lord inspires all who choose to stay. When the ATF gets wind that there is a stockpile of weapons at Mount Carmel, they spring into action. After the disastrous events at Ruby Ridge, where FBI Mitch Decker’s (Whigham) actions may have resulted in the death of an innocent civilian, negotiator Gary Noesner (Shannon) still feels bitter and outraged about how events unfolded. Searching for a way to improve their public image, the government descends upon Waco to confiscate the amassed cache of weapons. Almost immediately, the situation spirals out of control, with both agents and Davidians firing upon one another. Several Federal agents and multiple Branch Davidians are killed, and the FBI are called in. Noesner and Decker are both dispatched to the scene, and a standoff that would end in unspeakable horror is set into motion. At this point, we have all seen the shocking footage of what transpired in Waco. From the initial firefight to the deadly assault on the compound, the images are stamped into the psyche of everyone who watched them unfold on live television. What WACO does, perhaps even more so than any of the documentaries I have seen on the subject, is humanize Koresh. Kitsch, who is best known for his roles as Tim Riggins in NBC’s FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and for a number of action flicks that followed (BATTLESHIP, SAVAGES, JOHN CARTER) gives the performance of his career as the controversial Koresh. Soft spoken yet completely set in his ways, he projects an essence of power and command with all of his actions. Determined and righteous, he has a vague appreciation for those around him, but also has a singleminded drive that causes him to bypass the considerations of others, despite his constant missives on the importance of community. As the situation within the compound deteriorated, the power to end the whole thing always rested solely with him. Whether it was a divine prophecy, fear of imprisonment, or a massive ego trip that made him Taylor Kitsch as David Koresh as he stay will never be known. In Kitsch’s preaches to his Branch Davidians

hands, this question becomes a tad more muddied than it may have been before, but at no point does Koresh emerge as a wholly sympathetic character. WACO does a phenomenal job of introducing the audience to the principal players, and then building the tension dramatically throughout its six episode run. It was an interesting change of pace to see Shannon in the role of the calm, collected, and reasonable protagonist, particularly given his savage turns in BOARDWALK EMPIRE, BUG, and THE SHAPE OF WATER. As his foil, fellow BOARDWALK EMPIRE castmate Whigham is excellent as well, embodying the frustrations of the entire FBI as the standoff dragged on for days and weeks. Much like Kitsch did with Koresh, the cast that comprises the population of Branch Davidians (particularly Garner, Riseborough, and Benoist) allows us to see the inhabitants as people, and not mere statistics. WACO is a made-for-TV interpretation of how the shocking events unfolded, and obviously, creative liberties were evoked. The one issue I had with the series, is that it never really conveyed, other than a focus on his magnetic personality, what drove the Davidians to give themselves so fully to Koresh. There are brief glimpses of the rambling sermons given by the enigmatic leader, but it’s difficult to grasp what it was about the ideology that made them so certain that he was a messiah. The psychology of what happened is an essential part of the story, and that was lacking for the most part. Despite this criticism, WACO emerges as an enthralling viewing experience that culminates in a devastating finale that is just as shocking today as it was in 1993. The coronavirus-related stimulus legislation signed into law by President Trump on March 27, 2020 offers small businesses SBA-backed loans to pay for basic expenses. The owners won’t have to repay portions spent on paying employees, a mortgage, rent or utilities. The banks lending the money will be reimbursed for those portions by the Treasury Department, which is receiving $377 billion to fund the program. “I am very concerned about the economic impact of COVID-19 and I am still stunned by the magnitude this pandemic has had on our country, our community, and our club,” says Callahan. Until then, be thankful for your health, and stay active,” says Callahan. I have been a personal trainer for over eighteen years and I absolutely love what I do. Brew Time by KRISTIN MERRITT

Summer Brews After a normal CNY winter and what has seemed to be the longest, coldest, most terrible spring on record, it appears we are now diving right into summer, head-first. You certainly won’t find any complaining here and with restrictions beginning to be eased and lifted, sunnier days are definitely ahead! There are several traditional “summer” beers to put you in that sweet summertime mode. Summer brews tend to be on the lighter side. Shandys, Lagers, Sours, and crisp IPAs are all brews that should be on your weekend grocery lists and in your coolers all summer long. A traditional Shandy is a light beer mixed with citrus beverage, like lemonade. It may sound a little odd, but certainly don’t knock it until you try it, especially when the temperatures soar. Shandy’s are extremely refreshing and light. Leinenkugel Brewing Company’s Summer Shandy (4.2% ABV) from Chippewa Falls, WI is one of the most popular Shandy brews out on the mass market, and for good reason. It’s easy to come by in your local grocery or gas station and with their wheat beer mixed with lemonade, it makes for an easy drinking hammock beer. It’s best to drink a Shandy fresh and cold; you won’t want to let it sit in your fridge for weeks or months on end. Runner-up: Schöfferhofer Grapefruit (2.5% ABV), from Frankfurt, Germany – this is a Hefeweizen beer mixed with grapefruit juice. It’s very juicy and somewhat on the sweeter side. This is also a brew that is widely distributed and you can find this at your local Wegmans. Lagers are brews that are made using bottomfermented yeast and created under low temperatures, usually in the low 40s. The resulting brew is light and crisp. When most of us think about lagers we think about American lagers such as Budweiser, Coors, Miller and PBR, therefore making lagers one of the most underappreciated types of beer when we base them solely off of the aforementioned beers. My recommendations for Lagers come from Rare Form Brewing Company based in Troy, NY. Two of theirs come to mind that will please everyone from the PBR drinker to the more selective craft beer connoisseur. Freshy Hoppy Lager (5.5% ABV), is a lovely little brew, lightly hopped with slight citrusy notes. The second is Confetti (5.4% ABV), a Mexican-style lager brewed with New York corn and Zeus hops making this a very crisp and clean lager that you can still add a lime to. If you can’t make the drive out to the capital-region, you also have the opportunity to order from Rare Form online and have their beer shipped to you via UPS. Lagers are light and refreshing, which make them a welcome beer to have on hand in the summer and generally tend to be crowd pleasers. Sour beers are brewed to be generally acidic and therefore tart on the palate. Traditional sours include Gose, Lambic, and Flanders red ale. Many

different strains of yeast can be used and even “wild ales” or “wild sours” are produced using Foeders, which are giant open vats, and collect different strains of wild yeast and bacteria present in the air and the beer is fermented that way. Many sours are light, tart, and can have various fruit flavors in addition. They are notably carbonated and dry and are generally pretty refreshing. Sours are personally a favorite of mine and it’s hard for me to only recommend one or two. A local recent favorite is Syracuse’s own Willow Rock Brewing Company’s Godcilla: Curuba and Soursop (3.9% ABV). This sour is indeed fruited – with soursop being a prickly green fruit with flavors reminiscent of pineapple or strawberry and curuba being a variety of passionfruit – but is not overpowering. It is dry,

I was very happy to have found this and hope that this one will continue to be on their menu straight through the summer. Runner-up: ANYTHING by K2 Brothers Brewing out of Rochester, NY – recent favorites have been Soursop/Pineapple/Pink Guava Sour, Strawberry Starburst Gose (Yes! They actually used Starburst candies to make this!), Rasberry Lemonade Sour, Strawberry/Gooseberry/Pink Guava Sour, & a Black and Blue Sour. Currently, they do not ship, but the brewery is open for pickup and Branching Out Bottle IPAs – or India Pale Ales – are many and can almost be overwhelming with so many to choose from these days, but certainly a crisp, hoppy IPA can be a phenomenal addition to a warm summer’s day. There are also many varieties to choose from – New England IPAs, West Coast IPAs, Double IPAs, Triple IPAs, Session IPAs, etc. While the most prestigious of these are hard to get your paws on, there are several great IPAs that you can find almost anywhere beer is sold. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company (Chico, CA) has their traditional Pale Ale that is great and is usually a staple for me, especially when I’m in a hole-in-

the-wall bar, but they also have a “summer” IPA called Hazy Little Thing (6.7%), which is a New England Style IPA, made with Citra, Magnum, Simcoe, Comet, Mosaic, and El Dorado hops, giving it a citrusy, fresh, and definitely crushable summertime IPA to add to your list. I even found it to have some slight apricot notes. My second choice and a definite staple, even year-round, is Flower Power (7.2% ABV). This has a large body, with a noted pineapple and grapefruit finish. The brew is hopped and dry-hopped five different times throughout the brewing and fermentation process with Simcoe, Centennial, Cascade & Ahtanum hops and then dry-hopped with Chinook, Simcoe, and Amarillo. She’s a great one and super easy to find! Pool, beach, barbeque, boating, camping, hammock, porch, patio, golfing or sitting around a campfire – whatever your favorite summer pastime is, enjoy it that much more with one of these summertime brews in-hand. My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

My Pandemic Musings I was enjoying my first helping of Dosa Grill’s lunch buffet when the manager approached our booth to tell my friend and me that there would be no more buffet for a while because Governor Cuomo had ordered restaurant dining rooms to shut down as of 8 PM that day. After I paid my check on that March 16, I walked away overly optimistic that dining rooms would reopen quickly despite the restaurant manager’s suggestion that it might be a while. As of late May, we New Yorkers are still living with limits in response to a highly infectious virus that was here before we knew it. Of course, there are epidemiologists who suggest that someone should have seen this coming; that the 2017 gutting of the NSA pandemic response team was like taking the batteries out of a smoke detector and hoping the detector still works. So now what? Because I’ve experienced severe physical trauma, I read a lot about stress related physiology. We hold our breaths during stress. Deep breathing reduces stress and we’re more likely to feel extra stress around other stressed out people. I’ve found that some face masks impair deep breathing. I choose to wear a neckerchief/face covering in case I can’t stay away from people outdoors and a blue paper face mask when shopping. I am

not ready to seek out designer fashion masks. I don’t want certain COVID19 avoidance measures to morph into normalcy. During the H1N1 epidemic, epidemiologists suggest we stop shaking hands. Ok. Maintaining safe personal space might solve a lot of our problems. I’ve heard that everything happens for a reason. While we always have reason to investigate our own personal health choices, most of us want to believe what we have come to believe. Most of us come to believe what we believe by accessing information that reinforces our beliefs. When I last checked, the FOX News website reports the total COVID infections by state. Fact: New York State is and may continue to be number 1 in total infections on any list continued on pg 30

“social distancing” properly in public. Some of us forget that as Sars-Cov- 2 spreads itself around, we are all potential victims, “victims” being the operative term. While we can’t see Sars-Cov-2, we can see (and judge) each other. Seasonal allergies cause sneezing. Was the person whose mask covers only her nose find herself struggling to breathe? We need friendly and safe physical activity more during times of stress. Is the aerobic benefit of a brisk morning walk diminished when one is breathing through a couple layers of cotton or paper? I’ve tried to assess my blood oxygen levels using an oximeter I ordered through a vendor on Amazon.com. My new oximeter provided one reading. I returned it and have not yet received my refund, and I can’t follow up by phone because Amazon is protecting its credit card call center workers by not staffing the call center. I realize the sunk cost of the oximeter is miniscule in the big picture. Still, I would rather have spent the $43.95 plus return postage for a nice meal at a local restaurant. I’ve lived with a brain injury that caused many problems that physical therapy could have abated. Instead, I tried to sit at desks sometimes struggling to quietly concentrate on my work. My NY PAUSE related staying home has triggered old feelings of powerlessness, helplessness, sadness, and anger. I pay attention to my thoughts when I feel such feelings. Deep breathing can change one’s thinking. Breathing is power over one’s personal space. Wishing things were different is no defense against what is. Distraction, anxiety, and hypervigilance are symptoms of PTSD. This pandemic is trauma and traumatic stress has already created tense vigilante like interpersonal conflict in stores, outside statehouses and in physically safe but emotionally dangerous settings such as social media. And, this is happening as the weather heats up during a highly partisan election year. I’m not a health professional. I am a person who has been and still is recovering from early physical trauma that resulted in ongoing stress and trauma. Learning about how the body, brain, and mind function as one has helped me make better choices. Knowledge is power. Breath is life.

How to Make Your Own Fire Pit Constructing a fire pit is thrilling and easy, you can really set one up in a twenty-four hour period or even less if you are already knowledgeable with the procedure. You can even make it look picturesque by employing some fire pit landscaping techniques during the process. Here is a step-by-step guide on constructing your very own fire pit. But first, here are the things you will need: - Sand - Pea gravel - Cinderblocks or bricks - Shovel - Pick axe - Tamper - Rake - Level Step 1: Choose your location. If you are setting up the fire pit in your backyard make sure that it’s at least 10ft away from any other part of the home; implying it is 10 feet

away from the garage, 10 feet away from the fence... you know what I mean. And watch out for overhanging branches that could catch fire. So it should be in a wide open place. Step 2: Dig a 12-inch deep circular hole in the dirt, generally 4 to 5 feet in diameter. How big the fire pit is depends on your preference but I do not imagine you’d wish to construct something larger than 5 feet. Tip: To make the hole a near perfect circle, drive a stick to the soil where you will construct the fire pit, tie a 2 1/2-foot string to the stick and circle around it marking the ground with spray paint or something that will tell you where to dig. Step 3: Fill the hole with 4 inches of Pea gravel, 4 inches of sand, and tamp the layers level using your tamper tool. The pea gravel behaves as drainage. Step 4: Lay in the first layer of bricks. The first layer should be level and even all the way thus you need the level to assist you with this. Step 5: Place the subsequent bricks and make sure to overlap the bricks on each layer. Place some gaps in between some of the rocks to allow oxygen into the fire pit. In general, 3 to 5 layers of bricks is ideal. Step 6: Wait until nighttime and fire it up. That’s how easy building a fire pit is, some people can even construct one in as little as 2 hours. And once again, if the fire pit is going to be a part of your home, you can deco-

Tales from the Vine

by JOHN HELMSBY by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON

Wall Mounted Wine Racks 5 Hot Tips to Avoid Common Mistakes When considering what wall mounted wine racks to buy, it helps to first think of why you want to store them. It sounds silly but there's a reason for this thought process. Aside from the obvious fact that you get a wine racks so you can store bottles of wine, there are other reasons to storing wine. Longevity is the main reason - that is, to place the wine at the correct angle so that it can remain 'sound' and is kept in an environment that is relatively constant in temperature. There is a degree of expertise necessary to storing wine but for most of us it's important to have a bottle of wine that we can open and share with friends and not witnessing your guests reel back at the taste of a tart vinegar. First up - why do we store wine horizontally. Simple really - it is important to keep the cork moist so that it does not get dry and shrivel to a point that it allows oxygen to enter the bottle. The moment your wine oxidizes is the moment you need to bring out the fries

and sprinkle expensive vinegar over them. That would be about the only usefulness of the wine after it gets oxidized. So, now that we have established why you need to store the wine horizontally, it's easy to understand why racks are designed the way they are. Next step is to consider some basic rules.

Mistakes With Wall Mounted Wine Racks

Mistake 1: Considering Aesthetics and not Practicality. When storing wine, the novice in us may immediately consider the area where those wall mounted wine racks will look good. It's perfectly natural to want to show off our wine collection and have the bonus of a great decor piece that looks just right in the living room. Usually living rooms are bright, sunny places with nice bay windows. Looks

Wall Mounted Wine Racks-5 Hot Tips to Avoid Common Mistakes continued from pg 33 fresh and pretty but is a disaster when it comes to storing wine. Artificial light and sunlight are both hazardous to wine storage. When light penetrates the bottle, the normally stable compounds and tannins that are essential to the taste, flavor, aroma and texture of a great wine are effected and a result your wine is either spoiled or degraded. Mistake 2: Storing Wine in a Room with no Humidity. The room in which you keep your wine should be somewhat cool and humid. Any dryness in the air can cause that important cork to bid farewell and oxygen to say hi. As previously explained, this is not a good idea. Mistake 3: Storing Wine in Space that is Too Warm Placing your storage in a living room or family room where you may be using heaters in the winter time. This is a big no-no and something that can quite easily be overlooked if you are planning to mount your wall mounted wine racks when it's a nice summer temperature outside and the air-con is keeping the house cool. Wine needs an environment that is ideally a steady 14 degrees Celsius or 58 degrees Fahrenheit. Mistake 4: Keeping Wine in Areas with Strong Odors Here's an easy mistake to make. Placing your wine rack in an area such as the kitchen if it is constantly permeated with strong smells of fried onions, garlic, vegetables or cheeses that may ferment nearby. These odors can pollute the wine through the cork. Mistake 5: Noise Yes, I know - it seems like wine is this delicate flower that needs optimum conditions. Well, it is true, that if you want your wine to age well then you need to take precautions to avoid any possible disturbance. Noise creates vibrations - vibrations do not allow the wine to settle as it should. So if you plan to put your wall mounted wine rack in a place like the laundry or garage - don't! When it comers to the garage, don't forget that this is a place that has gasoline and chemical odors which makes it unsuitable.

Where to Put The Wall Mounted Wine Racks Then? Step 1 Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat. Step 2 In a small bowl, combine the cheese, bacon, parsley, and 1/8 teaspoon black pepper. Step 3 Lay the chop flat on cutting board, and with a sharp knife held parallel to the board, cut a pocket into the pork, going all the way to the bone, but leaving the sides intact. Stuff cheese mixture into pocket, and close with a wooden toothpick. Brush meat with oil, and season with salt and more black pepper. Step 4 Lightly oil the grill grate. Grill over medium heat for 5 to 8 minutes on each side, or until pork is done. Careful not to overcook!

It may seem like all the mistakes listed rule out all your rooms in the house. Perhaps it's easier, now that you know what mistakes to avoid, to decide on which room can offer the best conditions for wine storage. Try and find a room that is Dark/shaded from direct sunlight Is cool - around 57 degrees Fahrenheit Is not too dry Is calm/quiet Now you know why professional wine cellars are dark, humid and quiet places generally underground. But here's the deal - if you enjoy wine on a regular basis then there is no reason why you cannot store the wine for short periods of time, knowing that you will be consuming it relatively soon.

The Compromise

It is generally the reds that you will be looking to store with great care and you just need to do your best to get as close as you can to the optimal conditions. Unless you have investment wines or are a complete wine guru, you need not fret too much as long as you try your best to observe the rules. You can of course, build a mini wine cellar out of a closet or be grandiose and construct a real wine cellar. Or you can opt for the wine cellar fridges available for storing your wine in the perfect way. Whites and Sparkling wine do not need to be stored like red wines - these are generally consumed soon after purchase and you can chill them before serving. Make sure you consider the obvious rule breakers and you'll do fine when hanging those wall mounted wine racks.
