ANTONIAZZI

Hej!

I am an ambitious Architecture and Engineering student with German and Finnish roots, studying at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The unique programme combines technical approaches with aesthetics and design in a creative and reflective way so I was able to increase my genuine interest in fine arts and strengthen my konwledge in engineering sciences. During my first three years of studies, I gained significant skills and experiences that I now want to put further into practice during an internship in architecture.

With a family background in both architecture and engineering I realized that combining the two worlds is my goal for the future: I want to contribute to tackling urgent problems like global warming, social injustice and struggling democracies by building sustainable both socially and environmentally while designing beautiful, material efficient structures. To me, a deepened interplay of architecture and engineering can be a first step towards a better world.

SAUNA WALK Space & Man, fall 2018

The Sauna Walk Space & Man, fall 2019 The first design task at Chalmers was a sauna on a peninsula at Delsjön in Gotheburg. The facilities should be publicly bookable for smaller groups up to six persons. Changing rooms, showers and toilets were part of the requirment.

The sauna design was very simple as the focus was on the walk trough the forest and connection to nature. As I am a very passionate sauna enthusiast myself, I tried to impliment the beauty of nature that I value most in a good sauna bath. The model shows how the black sauna blends into the pine forest.

During summer break the following year, I build a similar sauna in real life at our family’s summer cottage in southern Finland. Akin to the university project it is located in the forest with a view over the stunning Turku archipelago. A wooden staircase leads from the sauna directly to a jetty.

BATH AT TORSLANDAKRYSSET Building & Structure, fall 2019

Bath at Torslandakrysset Building & Structure, fall 2019 The course Building & Structure was an introduction to fromfinding for larger structures such as a roof for a bath with two swimming pools. The task included a more complex floor plan of a multi purpose bath and the intresting challenge of calculating and designing a wooden structure for indoor swimming pools. As the site is located near Gothenburgs first airport in an industrial area a lot of the buildings surrounding it are shaped in a rahter rough style.

13

The first hand approach to this project was to find a volume that fits the two swimming pools that were required and at the same time blends in in the industrial environmet.

In the two story bath the swimming pools are located on the second floor. A shed roof made out of truss beams supports the roof and spans over the two pools. Wires take care of the horizontal forces the enormous roof places on the walls.

A detailed rendering of the façade shows how the welled sheet material meets the roof. The detail of the roof-wall connection shows the insulation as well as how the beams are included in the structure. Part of the submission was also a calculation of a beam. The interior beams that support the second floor are 450 by 190 millimeters.

LILLHAGSPARKEN Building & Climate, spring 2020

Lillhagsparken Building & Climate, spring 2020 The townhouse project at Lillhagsparken was an introduction to residential architecture. In a plot of land outside the city of Gothenburg, three different sizes of townhouses were to be planned. Due to the Covid-restrictions, the group project had to be done online so that each of the three group members focused on one house size, my part was in planning the 80 square meter town house.

Building volumes on site model

Alternative site layout

The course began with lectures around residential architecture, sketching and essay writing. The first thing we did as a group was to build a simple site model to find the perfect position for the building volumes adjusted to the unregular site. A moodboard created to sketch common ideas in the group was with us during the whole process. In the end, the concept came down to four key points we implemented in our design which are:

Moodboard made in the beginning

Brightness, Equality, Nature and Flexibility.

community yard

green space

dynamic placement

sun exposure

A distinct conceptual diagram of the thought process shows how we set up the site to make the community area as vital and versatile as possible. The key concepts we defined in the beginning are distingushable in every individual house as well as in the whole community..

The smallest of the townhouses is only 80 squaremeters and has a double height room going from the entrance all the way through the building to create a feeling of a bigger space inside the living room and to give room for the staircase. For energy saving and to illuminate the interior, the roofs are following the hill like stairs while facing south as seen on the previos page. B-B

Part of the project was to write an energy consumption report which showed that the townhouses would class as low-energy-buildings. A construction detail from bottom to top was also required. The smaller diagrams below illustrate how natural light fills the small townhouse and how sightlines cut trough the building. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT VERSION

MAJNABBE Town & Country Planning, fall 2020

Majnabbe Town & Country Planning, fall 2020 For over 70 years the small harbour of Majnabbe near the city center is the port to Germany for tourists and commercial transport. As the city grows, the terminal is moved and a new residential and office district are set to take its place.

27

To get an idea of urban planning, I did a lot of research which came down to these four key points I developed the new area of Majnabbe around. The social and environmental aspects of city planning in particual were very important for my proposal as the program was not very specific about detailed drawings.

a city that encourages its inhabitants and visitors to have a healthy lifestyle

As my student apartment is very close to the site (even visible on this map) and I used to live in Kiel, the city to which the ferry is nowadays going from Majnabbe, I had a lot of personal relation to the site. The coast line that leads from the city center to the Älvborgbridge is today interrupted by the harbour. As I love to take long walks or run in this area, I decided to stretch the coastline along Majnabbe to make it accessible for everyone. Much green space is included in the area and a generous bicycle lane makes the trip to the city center easier.

Two handdrawn perspectives give an impression of how the life in new Majabbe is going to look like. A healthy and socially sustainable environment for both residents and visitors is the goal of the measures taken in the design process. The long tradition of the harbour will not be forgotten as the view of the beautiful Gothenburg river opens up between the buildings and along the docks.

OTHER PROJECTS

Other Projects In other courses I learned a lot of software including Adobe Photoshop and Indesign, Grasshopper as Plug-in to Rhino, AutoCAD and Revit. But even some carpentry was part of the education such as a bridge construction challenge and workshop experience for wood modeling, lasercutting and 3D-printing.

33

Chalmers Structual Design Challenge Chalmers Structual Desgin Challenge is a competition held annually where groups of students build bridges with only two supports over a 13 meter wide pool on Chalmers Campus. My groups proposal was a DaVinci bridge that unfortuatly broke before the finals due to material deficiency.

Digital Tools The gridshell was programmed in the Rhino Plug-In Grasshopper. The pavillion borrows its form from nature as it is shaped like an egg and has therefore optimized stability from all horizontal angels.

Essays I started to enjoy writing essays as part of many architecture courses. This one is a critical analysis of 19th century London and the Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace still is one of the most famous buildings of the British Empire even though there were already signs of its decline while it was built. My critical analysis focused on the great inequality of the 19th century London where even children worked for minimum wages on the site and workers revolted due to bad working conditions - some even died. At the same time Crystal Palace was a huge factor for financial success that ultimatly benefited even the people in the slums in central London. As the essay was part of the course Architecture and History of Technology, a structual analysis of the magnificent building is also part of it. The steal- and glass colossus was built using completly new techniques of mass producing parts and assembling them on site which allowed the unconventional architect, Joseph Paxton, to move the building to Sydenham Hill after the world exhibiton, for which it was originally build for, ended.
