ranfurly Simmental Herd The Ranfurly Simmental Herd was established in 1971 from the humble beginnings of a grading up programme. This was abandoned in 1978 when six females were purchased from leading pedigree herds as the lucrative export market ceased. We have put a lot of emphasis on strong cow families, coupled with the use of wellproven AI sires. With these goals in mind we have enjoyed travelling to sales, dispersals and shows all over Ireland, the British Isles, and not forgetting World Congress trips to Canada, Czech Republic, Australia and New Zealand; with many trips to Germany. Over the years we have bought into several top cow families and evaluated them under our own conditions. After implementing a strict culling policy the current herd comprises of seven cow families – six of which are featured in the catalogue for this sale. The most successful of these cow families being the Weikel family, which was founded with the purchase of South Park King Kong Weikel 2nd at Perth in 2003. She has been both a tremendous breeding cow and embryo donor. To date, ten of her sons and one daughter have been sold to gross over £56,000. In addition to South Park King Kong Weikel 2nd, there are four of her daughters all breeding well within the herd. One daughter and four granddaughters are offered for sale. South Park King Kong Weikel 2nd has a great show record, and her progeny have secured a tremendous number of breed and interbreed accolades in the showring in recent years. The most noted being Ranfurly Weikel 3rd – winner of 10 successive breed championships. The herd has grown to over capacity, hence the decision to host this production sale in conjunction with the Ballinlare Farm Herd. Our offering comes from the heifer portion of the herd, and includes all of our 2010/11 born heifers deemed suitable for breeding, with the exception of one, Ranfurly Humdinger Weikel, which was Julie and Alan’s wedding present. Ballinlare Farm Herd The 60-cow Ballinlare Farm Simmental Herd was founded in 1984 with the purchase of a cow from the Acton Herd. Since then the herd has steadily expanded, with purchases from leading herds throughout Ireland and the UK, including Hillcrest, Kilbride Farm, Woodhall, Raceview and Milton. The herd purchased its first stock bull, Camus Brandy, at Perth in 1992 for 6,800gns. He is ranked as one of the most famous Simmental bulls of all-time, with semen sales exceeding 100,000 doses. Camus Brandy had a tremendous impact on the Ballinlare Farm Herd, and on numerous herds throughout the UK and Ireland, with sons selling to a top of 12,000gns, realised by Dovefields Gallant – supreme Perth champion in 1997; and Ballinlare Farm Rival which sold at Perth in 2005 for 10,000gns to the Woodhall and Innerwick herds. Influential sires used within the herd include Hillcrest Champion, Hillcrest Butcher, Camus Brandy, Raceview King, Raceview Valintino Miracle S, Innerwick Krackerjack and Milnafua Jordan. Innerwick Krackerjack was the sire of the 8,500gns Ballinlare Farm Spartacus – junior and reserve supreme Perth champion in October 2006 and Ballinlare Farm Nightrider which sold to the Corskie herd for 7,500gns. The most recent stock bull to join the herd, Auchorachan Wizard, was junior and supreme overall Perth champion in February 2010, and purchased for 20,000gns. He is in the breed’s top 5% for calving ease (+5.9), and is the sire and service sire of many of the lots featured in this catalogue. One of our most noted cows is the home-bred Ballinlare Farm Moneypenny – winner of three successive breed championships at Balmoral Show, 2004, 2005 and 2006; and reserve interbreed champion at Balmoral in 2004. Her Auchorachan Wizard daughter sells (lot 38). UNderSTANdING THe BreedPLAN PerForMANCe reCordING INForMATIoN IN THIS CATALoGUe Only British Simmental GROUP BREEDPLAN EBVs or INTERIM EBVs with Accuracy (Acc) can be validly compared between herds. eSTIMATed BreedING VALUeS (eBVS) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait. ACCUrACY An accuracy value is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or it's relatives. Accuracy below 75% should be considered low. CALVING eASe Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving. DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. DTRS: Daughterâ€™s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving. BIrTH ANd FerTILITY GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth. BwT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers. SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny. GrowTH MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughterâ€™s milking ability as it affects the 200day weight of their calves. 200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight. 600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age. MwT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Smaller, or more moderate EBVs are generally more favourable. CArCASe CwT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in carcase weight at a standard age of 650 days. eMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals. rIB: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity. rBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size. Terminal Index The BSCS Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Simmental bulls over large framed, mixed breed cows to breed steers and heifers to turn off at 16 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 630 kg live weight (335 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase. Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 16 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females. If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher calving ease direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index. Self replacing Index The BSCS Self Replacing index is aimed at a Simmental herd selecting replacement females from within the herd while breeding steers and excess heifers to turn off at 16

months of age. There is emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while also looking to finish steers for slaughter at around 680 kg live weight (350 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase. This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Simmental sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour. Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter. British Simmental Cattle Society Index Values The British Simmental Cattle Society have updated the values used to calculate the Terminal and Self Replacing Index values to reflect the recent upturn in finished cattle prices, the value of cull cows and general values of livestock. Breed average values are now +57(+20) for Terminal index and +58(+24) for the Self Replacing index however the ranking of animals within the breed or movement in ranking is minimal. REGULATIONS FOR AND CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. All animals entered must be put up for auction, and sold in the order in which they appear in the Catalogue. Animals to be catalogued in order of age, the oldest animals to be placed first. Animals not presented in the sale ring in Catalogue order will not be admitted to the sale ring until the end of the section of the sale for which they are entered. 2. The pedigree, history and description of each animal shall be guaranteed and warranted to be correct in all particulars by the person whose name appears as Vendor, but every animal shall be sold subject to faults. No liability whatever is undertaken by the Auctioneers for the statements appearing in the Catalogue. The Vendors who supply such statements are alone responsible for any error or mis-statement. 3. Vendors must provide competent persons to take charge of their stock up till the close of the sale, whether sold or unsold. 4. The animals will be sold in guineas. Commission of five pence for each guinea will be charged on all sales, either public or private. 5. Should any animal pass out to the sale ring unsold and subsequently sold privately the Purchaser shall pay the commission on such private sales. 6. Animals will be offered subject to a reserve price. 7. No money shall be paid to the Vendor of any lot sold, unless the lot be cleared by Purchaser, and the Auctioneers will not be answerable for any deficiency that may arise on the re-sale of any unclaimed property, but will give the Vendor all reasonable assistance to have the contract enforced. 8. The Purchasers to give in their names and addresses in writing and pay the full purchase money for each lot at the fall of the hammer (if required), in default of which the lot, or lots, so purchased may be put up again immediately and re-sold. 9.
