FOREWORD

The Helen family would like to welcome everyone to the 4th Annual Kilgarriffe Sale, selling 30 freshly calved heifers, 25 heifer calves, and 6 stock bulls. The aim in Kilgarriffe has been to breed trouble free cows with functional conformation and dairy strength without compromising on production. By sourcing and developing cow families that meet this brief over the years, we are confident that all the animals in the sale will make solid foundations on which to build great cow families for their new owners.

Lot 55 Kilgarriffe Pietje 130, selling in aid of West Cork Rapid Response and Palliative Care Services, is from a potential 9th generation VG or EX member of the Pietje family. The Pietje’s are known for their strength, functional type, and consistent production. Pietje 130’s grand dam sold for €4,650 in the Kilgarriffe Sale 2022. Her dam, Kilgarriffe Pietje 101 sired by Koepon Raptor, also sells as LOT 13. The calf is sired by HW Bossink Diego, a bull from the exceptional Dutch Miranda family. Diego’s extended pedigree is Aikman x Talentino EX91 x Incas EX92 x Stadel EX91 x Tulip VG87 x Bram EX90. Not only exhibiting functional type and balance, the Miranda family can also produce high component milk. Five generations of this family have produced over 5% fat and 3.9% protein! Two of these cows also produced over 100 tonnes of milk.

Lot 7, Kilgarriffe Batenburg Daisey is from the Daisey family which originated in the Devon based Thuburough herd of William Ley. This heifer promises to bring exceptional production to her new home. Her dam, Lavaman Daisey VG86, is averaging 10401KG at 4.14%BF and 3.61%PR in her 5th lactation. Batenburg Daisy is sired by Batenburg Michael, a bull that has sired some of the highest producers in the herd currently, including Pietje 18 VG87 (averaging 12,743 @3.97%BF and 3.39%PR in 4 lactations) and Rainbow 16 EX90 (averaging 11,163kg @ 4.32%BF and 3.48%PR in 5 lactations).

From the Hiwatha family, LOT 15 Kilgarriffe Hiwatha 31 GP83, is sired by Lambda, from a Carlino dam who produced 3.64%PR in her first lactation. Her grand dam, Hiwatha 10, had yields to 3.79%PR. The Hiwatha family is an exceptionally deep pedigreed family, that traces back to Golden Oaks Mark Prudence EX95-USA.

LOT 26 Kilgarriffe Buttercup 45 GP84 has the makings of an excellent foundation cow for someone looking to establish a new cow family. From an EX90 Headliner x EX 90 Goldsun x VG87 Oman, this heifer traces her lineage to Nowerland Tradition Buttercup EX92, who was one of the national leaders for production in the USA in the 1980s.

In the calves, Kilgarriffe Ebony 95, LOT 50, is from a high protein branch of the Ebony family. Sired by Conway, she comes from 4 generations of cows who have all produced over 3.6% protein. Lot 49, Kilgarriffe Vera 33, from the Clonswords Vera family, promises to be a sweet calf, sired by Applicable. She is from a potential 4th generation straight EX Highlite dam. She’s not afraid to milk; on target to produce 10,972kg at 3.96%BF and 3.37%PR 805KG MS in her second lactation.

AUCTIONEERS CONDITIONS OF SALE

The bidding is to be regulated by the Auctioneers, in terms of “Euro” bids plus 5% fees (exclusive of VAT) charged to the buyers. The auctioneers will regulate bidding as they see fit, with no bid less than 5 Euro between 100 and 200 Euro; therefore not less than 10 Euro.

The highest bidder for any lot shall be the buyer and the contract shall be concluded on the fall of the hammer. If any dispute should arise, the lot in dispute to be put up again and resold, or the Auctioneers may determine the dispute at their discretion and their decision shall be final.

The Auctioneers reserve the right to refuse the bid of any person without being called upon to give a reason for such action. The purchaser to give his name and dwelling place and pay for all lots at the close of the sale. No lot or lots shall be removed from the premises until paid for, and a pass-out slip is obtained from the Auctioneers clerk, but each and every lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer be considered as delivered and be and remain in every respect at the absolute risk and expense of the respective purchaser or purchasers thereof and shall be removed from the sale at the purchaser’s expense.

Title (i.e. ownership) to any animal or animals knocked down or sold to any person or persons shall not pass to that person or persons until payment of the entire price bid by that person or persons shall have be discharged in full to Michael Taaffe trading as “Taaffe Auctions”, Milltown, Termonfeckin, Co. Louth. Tendering of a cheque which is not subsequently honoured or not paid for any reason shall not be deemed to constitute payment.

All loading shall be the duty and responsibility of the purchaser.

All statements in the catalogue or any made by the Auctioneers at the time of sale, also the identification of the animals, are the entire responsibility of the vendors. The Auctioneers take no personal responsibility for the correctness of such statements or identities.

The Auctioneers act as agents for the vendors and any action taken by a purchaser must be against the vendor and not against the Auctioneers, and “vice, versa.”

Neither the vendors, nor the Auctioneers will be responsible for any accident through fire or any other cause whatsoever, nor for any damage done to, during or after the sale.

If any of these conditions are unfulfilled, the vendors or the Auctioneers shall have power to re-sell the lots, retaining any surplus and charging any deficiency and expense to the defaulter.
