WELCOME

My architectural ambition stems from observing the indiscriminate development of Chinese cities around me, and my academic interest stems from my personality and educational background.I cannot stand the urban development policies that involve wholesale demolition and reconstruction, so I have been paying attention to the field of sustainable architecture, including the topics of material reuse and prefabricated construction, and established the Industrial Construction Association. I am obsessed with exploring the narrative of architecture, so in my undergraduate studies and research, I constantly questioned what activities, emotions, and atmospheres spaces should evoke, and ultimately created my own methodology for narrative design.

This portfolio describes the design projects that have had a profound impact on me - from the initial stages of design thinking to the initial formation of design methodology, and then to a new understanding of architecture after completing an internship, I would like to reiterate that I constantly question what architecture can be.

Arrangement, Reutilization, Activation Renovation project in Xi'an, China Student: Junyu Fan Tutor: Jianghai Hu In the first semester of 2023, the experimental building adjacent to the main building of the Department of Architecture of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology was demolished. When asked how the materials were used, the contractor's answer was "bury them." So they keep teaching us the theory of how to design sustainable buildings, but in practice they keep creating waste materials?

This project will explore how to intervene in the existing architectural education system and use reclaimed materials to renovate existing architecture department buildings. At the same time, the idea of reuse ​​ and recycling of C&D waste will be put into practice to positively affect students and local Community.

This project was an initiation of personal design thinking and a reflection on the architectural education based on task books at that time. The project focused on studying the causes behind architecture, i.e., design is not only about creating spaces, but also about organizing a system that operates in the site.

Materials Cycle System: Activating the Operation Strategy of the Site Re-entering Communities Material rough machining

Material Salvage The once beautiful courtyard was dilapidated, materials were piled haphazardly, and a pungent smell filled the air. This concept map attempts to explore the process of reuse in the wild and the gradual restoration of order from ruins.

A material reusing and recycling network will be jointly established and operated by schools, students, and communities, and it is hoped that on this basis, will explore how to interact with the surrounding communities, which is accustomed to working behind closed doors.

Revive the life from the ruins The original south courtyard will be transformed into a reclamation yard for storing reclaimed materials and furniture.the original workshop will be reactived to process reclaimed materials and furniture. In order to share more material reuse and recycling aspects with the public based on the experience, the original unused seminar room will be transformed into a materials library. At the same time, in order to strengthen the interaction between the community and the School of Architecture, the school will periodically launch lectures and materials committee cycles on how to reuse materials and furniture in the lecture room. The exhibition hall, a space that is only used at the end of each semester, will provide students and the community with a donation, sales and display space for reclaimed materials and furniture.

Reactiving Demolition Ruins The Result of Reorganizing the Community Fragments

The ruined space was reactived, reclaimed materials and furniture were reused and recycled, fragments of the entire community were reorganized in the courtyard, and things that were once considered "garbage" were reassembled in an orderly manner. The original ruins were reused as a material experiment and display space. At the same time, reclaimed materials were used to install a new facade system for the original building to try to alleviate the problems of insufficient indoor insulation and space.

Vibrancy of Space

The salvaged materials and furniture will be stored in the temporary storage area first, waiting for staff to take them to the outdoor courtyard or workshop for cleaning and repair of the materials. The processed materials and furniture will be placed in the warehouse, waiting to be reused . The building facade on the north side will be composed of scaffolding and recycled materials, while the original building facade system will be re-insulated.

The original building plays the role of processing reclaimed materials, so we reused the original workshop and opened up a connection with the classroom space above. Conveyor belts that facilitate the transportation of materials can bring about every space in the building, making the building as dynamic as a machine.

The project is located at Lake Resia, in the valley of Curon Venosta in South Tyrol, bordering Switzerland and Austria. Its magnificent and tranquil natural environment is fascinating.

However, this seemingly beautiful and tranquil scenery hides an invisible tragedy, an infinite tragedy brewed by people's endless greed and desire. This is a fascist aggression against races under hatred; this is an arrogant transgression that ignores theocracy; this is a barbaric and brutal blasphemy that ignores the laws of nature.

In my opinion, desire is like alchol, which can make people happy, but also make people crazy and ignorant. In this project, a whiskey distillery is built on the shore of Lake Resia, and tourists are expected to taste fine wine and participate in the process of brewing under the magnificent and tranquil scenery of Lake Resia, so that they can understand the invisible sad history of South Tyrol hidden in the depths of history and promote positive communication between people of different races and beliefs to avoid the recurrence of similar incidents.

This project embodies the methodology of spatial narrative that I learned during my undergraduate studies - a process of exploring the visible and invisible elements of a site using a variety of media (hand-drawn sketches, collages, models, etc.) and translating them into architectural elements, then integrating them into an architectural system to produce a unique space that is rooted in the site.

Re-evaluating Exploring the Intangle elements

The background traces back to the cession of South Tyrol as territory to Italy. In 1919, following the signing of the Treaty of Saint-Germain, South Tyrol was ceded to Italy. A significant influx of Italians settled in the region, rendering the coexistence of German and Italian cultures increasingly precarious. The fascist regime endeavored to impose Italian culture upon this area.

Subsequently, in a bid to establish a reservoir, the Italian fascists resolved in 1939 to elevate the water level of Lake Resia from 5 meters to an astonishing 22 meters. Prior to this elevation, they merely erected a sign in a language incomprehensible to the villagers residing in those villages destined for submersion—an act that underscored either their ignorance or their blatant disregard for ensuring that the local German-speaking populace understood their intentions. Although World War II brought an end to this horrific plan, it was resurrected by local authorities and the "Montecatini" consortium in 1947, ultimately leading to complete inundation of the region and displacing 150 families.

As depicted by conceptual models, disaster enveloped the site like layers upon layers on water's surface; only St. Catherine’s Church stood resolutely amidst these tribulations—a steadfast pillar reaching toward heaven.

"Multifaceted Persecution"

PLAN 1:500 In the process of brewing whiskey, one undergoes a purification and blessing before the sacred vessel. Thus, wine emerges as a divine gift—a sanctified artifact designed to dispel hatred. At the same time, within this ritualistic framework, individuals are afforded the opportunity to acknowledge the historical essence of their surroundings and reinterpret the landscape anew.

This project will primarily encompass three distinct spaces: the Malting Space, the Fermentation Space, and the Distillation Space.The Malting Space crystallizes into a realm of reminiscence, articulating the tension between divinity and desire; while the Fermentation Space serves as a metaphor for absolution from sin and gestation towards a new era. The Distillation Space symbolizes an emotional catharsis that simultaneously dismantles past traumas, culminating in redemption from tragedy.

Just as the activation of sugars in barley precedes the art of brewing, space serves as a clandestine guide to experiential realms. In malting space,the apparatus employed for this activation emerges from the earth like a hybrid between a trumpet and a church spire, seemingly narrating the buried sorrows of a bygone town. Saint Catherine beckons individuals to glimpse into the secrets concealed beneath the surface.people to explore the secrets hidden underground.

The process of fermentation unfolds like a sacred mass, where barley transforms into the primordial essence of brewing along this sacrificial journey, symbolizing the ritual of rebirth within the venue. We witness beams of hope cascading through the rose window, emblematic of the divine gaze, as suffering dissolves away. Gradually, spires that signify celestial blessings rise from the water's surface, heralding a new dawn.

The process of distillation embodies the ascension of raw liquor from a tranquil liquid state to an exuberant gaseous form—an eruption of invisible anguish, suffering, and all grievances against injustice that have long been concealed in the annals of history. Under the influence of intense heat, the accumulated sorrows of the past find their moment for rebirth.

Scenes of oppression The Malting Room of Suppression and Escape As the initial stage of the brewing process, the malting space plays a crucial role in guiding and laying the groundwork for subsequent activities. The desires constrained by humanitarian considerations serve as the central theme of this environment. The narratives surrounding the past and present of this space are intricately woven into the landscape formed by both its physical setting and brewing apparatus.

"The Opponent" draws a ship laden with barley to the port, evoking the historical greed of bureaucratic regimes in their appropriation of natural resources. Within this space, the barley transfer apparatus operates incessantly under surveillance; only through escape can one find liberation from its grasp.

The tyranny arrogantly enforces inhumane orders, leaving the populace helplessly fleeing from this place. The stark contrast between the array of escaping canned devices and the towering presence of "The Opponent" is evident.

In the conceptual model, the designer employs gears as a metaphor for the relentless operation within the barley processing space, reflecting on the inhumane persecution endured by villagers in times past. The progressively layered spatial relationships guide movement underground— much like St. Catherine's guidance. Thus begins this narrative.

Within this space dedicated to wheat harvesting, objects function like relentless mechanical gears, symbolizing the dystopian apparatus that stood defiantly during Mussolini’s era, coldly gazing upon what is regarded as sacred—the tower at the heart of the lake.

Like a proud standing army, the sprinkling device watches over the progress of the wheat. Its sharp tip points towards the lake's central tower the core symbol of people's hope. This posture metaphorically represents past wars.

The Way of Redemption The Fermenting Space for Purification and Nurturing

As the lake water surges in, the Purification Corridor evokes imagery of the submerged village from the past. However, under the blessing of the tower at the heart of the lake, this flowing water transforms into an element of baptism that is incorporated into a ritual. This marks the prologue to a process where symbolic devices begin to ferment their tasks.

As a process in brewing that transforms barley into wort, fermentation represents a period of nurturing potential. The steps involved in the conversion of barley to wort reflect not only the physical transformation but also the psychological journey of individuals, marked by oppression and culminating in spiritual cohesion. The qualities of resistance and yearning for freedom serve as the driving forces behind barley's metamorphosis.

、Traversing through the Purification Corridor, barley—displaced due to persecution—undergoes a cleansing process in preparation for rebirth. The "pupa" serves as their vessel for gestation. Amidst an atmosphere charged with tension from vigilant adversaries, a quiet transformation occurs within these pupae as barley mash transitions into liquor.

This conversion from barley to alcohol symbolizes a journey from superficiality to essence and represents humanity's yearning for freedom.

During this material transformation, bubbles agitate within. This gradual emergence signifies the birth of new ideologies and illustrates how brewing alcohol embodies humanity's unwavering resistance against oppressive destinies.

The Corridor of Purification is responsible for the cleaning and mash extraction processes prior to fermentation.

The barley in the tank escapes from the constraints of the germination space, preparing for the ritual of rebirth— fermentation—through a purification path blessed by daylight.

The fermentation apparatus hangs silently against the concrete wall, reminiscent of a cocoon in its tranquil stillness. Within the viscous slurry, yeast intertwines with syrup, symbolizing the nascent hope that is nurtured in this very sanctuary.

The Pinnacle of Rebirth The Distillation Space of Ascension and Witnessing This space represents the climax of the entire venue, where energy erupts. Through high-temperature distillation of the original mash, steam from the newly created spirit surges forth from the central tower. At the culmination of this surge, the alcohol vapor returns to the barrel aging apparatus, completing its final resting phase. This process serves as a witness to history and is always prepared to share its essence with future generations.

The entire brewing process serves as a ritual of remembrance for the past and a contemplation of future possibilities. It involves an impassioned denunciation of the transgressions committed by bureaucrats, coupled with a calm reflection on the hopes that lie ahead.

At the center of this space stands a distillation tower, symbolizing ascension. Here, all suffering and feelings of remorse erupt, transcending into realization and ultimately achieving redemption.

The surrounding barrel aging apparatus acts as witnesses to this transformation, collectively mourning the tragic history associated with this site alongside the spirits contained within.

In this place, past contradictions and negative emotions dissipate through the act of distillation; what remains is only the fragrant whiskey. These witnesses will endure in perpetuity, preserving human emotions while allowing the whiskey to continue conveying both the tragedy and forgiveness inherent to this location.

The Tower of Ascension, as an embodiment of the free spirit, integrates the distillation process with a spirit of resistance against injustice, culminating in a towering structure that reaches towards the heavens. Individuals exuberantly express their fervent emotions through the eruption of steam.

The barrel aging apparatus elegantly encircles the distillation tower, standing as a silent witness to the myriad emotions that permeate this space— both preserving the essence of the mash and enriching it with depth, while simultaneously chronicling history for future reminiscence.

Ocean Salvager Tanka Community Centre in Hainan, China Designer: Junyu Fan Under the pressure of policy changes, the fishing communities of the Gulf have been compelled to abandon their traditional lives aboard fishing boats. Once-thriving ports have now transformed into graveyards for vessels. In response to challenges such as marine pollution and urban migration, this artisan collective aims to reshape the coastal landscape by integrating industrial waste materials into the original structures of buildings.

This project seeks to narrate a story through architectural design: it combines new glued laminated timber structures with materials from old boats, symbolizing the boat-dwelling community's nostalgia for their past and acceptance of their future. Additionally, this initiative is rooted in traditional ancestral temple architecture, attempting to connect traditional totems with contemporary building phenomena, thereby fostering a deeper emotional resonance with the architecture itself.

This project was conducted after the undergraduate internship, which emphasizes the idea of using materials and technology as a medium to achieve narrative. The architecture is imagined as a delicate device assembled by components that metaphorically represent the story.

For Future Growth The towering structure that reaches into the sky will be reconstructed from the remnants of the living spaces of the Dan people. This project aims to visualize history and serves as an object that grows alongside memory. The process of collecting materials from boats is not merely a means of recycling; it also acts as a burial for history, leaving imprints of each household's past within the tower, thereby ensuring their memories are preserved here.

Consequently, this project begins as a temple for reminiscing about the past—a museum dedicated to storing memories— repositioning and sanctifying what has been abandoned.

The elevated form mimics the ancestral hall once present in the village, with its design considering the base as a space for salvaging boat wrecks.

At the same time, we recognize that alleviating people's pain should not encompass all architectural intentions.

As this tower grows in commemoration, it must also adapt to meet the varying needs of different periods experienced by the Dan people. It will provide them with gathering spaces, areas for storing fish and food supplies, and places where children can play and frolic.

The Collection of Memories After the violent implementation of policies, the fishing boats that have been home to the Dan people for generations have transformed into mere debris adrift at sea, haunting like specters.

In order to clear the remnants from the ocean and alleviate the shadows in the hearts of the Dan people, towering structures have been erected. The materials salvaged from these abandoned vessels will be repurposed as part of construction projects.

The tower stands tall along the coastline, resembling a lighthouse in its quest to seek out those "souls yet to return home." As a sentinel, it symbolizes a once-safe harbor.

The remains of ships will be salvaged from the space beneath the tower and redistributed through a conveyance system to supply materials necessary for both the façade and structural components of the building. Utilizing glued laminated timber as its skeletal framework, nutrients are reorganized upon it.

Among these elements, the most striking feature is the roof constructed from recycled ship keels. It resembles a skeletal structure that envelops the entire space; this area, now designated for drying fish catches, serves as an echo of past maritime living environments.

Equipment for Vessels

The massive X-shaped structure provides stability within this space. The elevated volume allows for flexible use of the lower area, which is allocated for community activities where residents can gather to discuss matters, share drinks, and find brief solace; this space also functions as preparation for a new port while awaiting the end of fishing bans. In contrast to the spiritual spaces above used for rituals at the tower's summit, this base serves material needs specific to local fishing communities—a refuge that accommodates p e o p l e w h i l e p re p a r i n g f o r f u t u re endeavors.

The public space for community activities The fishing boats were forgotten and the villages were relocated. The mandatory policy made the Tanka people breathless.

So a gentle family lobby was recreated at the bottom of the tower. With the recycled fishing village keels as the ceiling, the space recreated the atmosphere of life at sea at that time. When the fishing season comes again, the space is open to the public as a port for selling fish.

The space on the rooftop, designed to provide spiritual solace for the Dan people, differs from the tower's base that serves daily life.With sea burials prohibited and ancestral halls relocated, the Dan community requires a place to process their memories of the past. In this high tower, seawater is stored within walls constructed as water-retaining trombe walls, serving as a medium for dialogue between the Dan people and their ancestors. This architectural feature not only achieves thermal comfort indoors but also creates light and shadow reminiscent of undulating seawater, drawing the thoughts of the Dan people back to scenes of ancestral rituals conducted by the seaside.

Reused keel sections from boats are deconstructed to support the flooring of this ritual space. This structure metaphorically functions like a bridge, facilitating communication between reality and spirituality.

Temple for Communicating with Ancestors The Daan ethnic group has traditionally practiced sea burials to bid farewell to their loved ones, believing that the ocean serves as a medium for communication with their ancestors. In contemporary times, in an effort to recreate the rituals of the past, a water-filled Trambo wall envelops the temple, casting shadows and reflections reminiscent of the sea. At this moment, members of the Daan community establish a connection with their ancestors within the temple.

The Watchmen Giving People a Pure Land

Preparing for the Future A totem, a museum, a temple, a residential space, a bridge between the past and the future - a place that commemorates the past and discusses the future. The multiple identities of the tower stem from people's diverse needs and are a rebellion against the government's rigid policies.

In the past, the tower stood on the coast where abandoned ships were piled up, serving as a cleaner of the sea. Countless boat components carrying memories were collected in the empty cavities and surfaces of the tower, and the old boat keels symbolizing past lives were solemnly stored, hinting at the old boat planks of the Dao family being like memorials hanging on the tower. People mourned the past and paid tribute to their sorrows in the tower.

Today, the tower stands on the former dock, serving as a guardian of the fishing village. As its task of collecting shipwreck debris comes to an end, the structure has become a totem of history, and the coast has become a pristine area. The traditional practice of sea burial, which was abandoned due to the ban on sea burial, can be revived in the tower, and the gathering spaces and shrine spaces that once disappeared have been restored in the tower.

From then on, the tower will become a symbol of perseverance in people's hearts, a witness to their escape from suffering, preservation of tradition, and embrace of a new life. The suspended tower can meet the needs of different functional spaces within the building, in response to the challenges of sustainable architecture in the future.

In summary, the growth of the tower responds to the changes of the site. The nostalgia for the past and the aspirations for the future of the Dong people have resulted in a monument that is entirely their own, and each component of the tower contains historical and hopeful connotations.

In response to a friend's invitation, we co-founded the Industrial Construction Association, an organization aimed at guiding students in utilizing prefabrication theories and structural methods for innovative construction.

Through my involvement in the association—inviting prominent figures for lectures, organizing knowledge competitions for members and peers, and facilitating site visits to factories—I not only enhanced my leadership skills but also improved my communication, coordination abilities, and sense of responsibility. Additionally, I had the opportunity to connect with several pioneering scholars. Ultimately, these collective efforts culminated in our participation in the National Competition on Industrialized Intelligent Construction, where we were awarded first prize.

My Work I assisted in the master planning of a residential project, specifically demonstrating to the client how to optimally plan the area for construction that aligns with the characteristics of the site. The entire process involved brainstorming sessions that culminated in 16 proposals; under the guidance of the chief designer, we made selections and determined a clear direction; ultimately establishing a definitive plan. While assisting in design, I also participated in drafting various stages of the overall layout and its final renderings.

Challenges Encountered Among the 16 planning proposals presented to meet client needs, making selections proved particularly challenging. We evaluated options from perspectives such as urban image, residential quality, living views, and ample sunlight exposure through windows. However, technical considerations often could not serve as core criteria for evaluation. In such instances, the chief designer typically reverted to initial concepts for decision-making. During this period, I learned about designers' pursuit of possibilities and their judgment regarding balancing advantages across different dimensions. Most importantly, I recognized the significance of maintaining an original design intent—this passion frequently resonates with both our team and clients alike.

I participated in the facade design of a standard factory building and assisted in researching Chinese design standards to provide a basis for the design. I referenced several regulations, such as the "Energy Efficiency Design Standard for Public Buildings" (GB 50189-2015).

In real projects, there is a strict requirement to align designs with Chinese design standards and specifications. As an intern, I spent considerable time studying architectural codes; what once seemed like free-form construction now necessitated substantial references and case studies during its advancement. This experience deepened my understanding of the importance placed on regulations within the field.

I assisted in the drafting of the overall layout and floor construction drawings for a restaurant within an industrial park.

The primary focus of my work was to facilitate the synchronized advancement of architectural design alongside its supporting systems, such as the integration between architectural design and electrical and plumbing system designs.

Each progression or modification in architectural design necessitates corresponding actions from related disciplines; thus, it is crucial for designers to maintain effective oversight across various departments. Throughout my internship, I increasingly recognized the significance of coordination and organizational skills in this context.

My Work

One particularly interesting experience was applying my knowledge from the School Industrial Construction Association to connect with window manufacturers. We communicated the project's design requirements and data with the prefabricated factory, aiming to design window components using as few modular units and existing templates as possible. Then, I completed the technical drawing of the building facade.

It is difficult to complete the design of window and door components for a real project using a single modular system, so it is necessary to base the component design on the existing templates of the factory. After the design institute made the request, we communicated with several factories to understand the material or process advantages of different factories.

When designing nodes and components, we usually communicate with the prefabricated factory we often work with to improve their basic cases and create unique details specific to the project. Therefore, every design and drawing of a node is the result of considering various factors such as project requirements (such as scale, climate, materials, aesthetics), building codes, mechanical calculations, and manufacturing conditions of the prefabricated factory.

Based on the industrial construction society on campus, combined with the internship and work experience of this year, I have accumulated experience in node design while understanding the responsibility of architectural design.
