Prof. univ. dr. Sabin Adrian Luca Director General al Muzeului Naţional Brukenthal
PrefaCe I Like the world around us, contemporary art is a scene which generates provocation by the diversity of its manifestations and by the fact that it cannot be easily defined with the help of a list of visual characteristics, artistic topics or cultural concerns. And still, if we were looking for a framework approach, we could say that contemporary art is the product of our recent past with its social, political and technological implications. Given its special mission, the museum isn’t just the keeper of the past’s patrimony, but also the custodian of the future’s patrimony, the dynamics of which starts with exhibitions of contemporary art and ends with collections, compiled through donations and acquisitions. Since 2014, the Museum of contemporary Art of the National Brukenthal Museum has illustrated this process via its ”Visitable Repository“, which exhibits the works of numerous artists from the last decades. Most of these bear witness to the exhibitions of these contemporary artists in the halls of our institution. in recent years, the National Brukenthal Museum has been reserving a special place on its cultural agenda for events dedicated to artists from the Romanian diaspora and their return home. We celebrate each such reunion; they offer an opportunity for elevated, emotional artistic manifestations. We are equally happy to welcome Michael Lassel’s exhibition in this special year dedicated to celebrating 200 years since the opening of the Brukenthal Museum to the public. The opening of Michael Lassel’s exhibition in the Brukenthal Palace offers the visiting public the experience of continuity. His contemporary paintings rediscover the complex creations which we find in the art of the past centuries in the European Art Gallery of the Museum, under the aspect of technical approach, of decorative virtues and of meanings in the composition.
PrefaCe II in the 1750s, the enlightened baron Samuel von Brukenthal (17211803), representative of the Saxon Nation university and civil servant of the Transylvanian chancellery at the Vienna court of Maria Theresia (1717-1780), began to assemble collections of a European status beyond the areas of arts and books. in the years 1778-1788, as governor of Transylvania (1774-1788), he built himself a palace in Sibiu (Hermannstadt/Nagyszeben), both as a magnificent residence and as a suitable place for the safekeeping of these collections. True to his motto, ”Fidem genusque servabo“ (i will serve my faith and my people), the childless Brukenthal left the collections to the high-school of Sibiu. in 1817, they were opened to the public, making the Brukenthal Museum the oldest in southeast Europe. There was no doubt that the Brukenthal Museum should display on its 200th anniversary the work of a Transylvanian Saxon artist, especially because the opening of the exhibition takes place within the framework of the 27th Saxons meeting. And it is no accident that the choice fell on Michael Lassel. clearly, his works fit seamlessly into the ambiance of the Brukenthal Palace, this most important baroque building in Transylvania. They build a bridge to the time 200 years ago not only with their extremely careful pedantic painting technique. They also echo baroque erudition, as well as the ebullient baroque lust for life accompanied by the knowledge of the transience of all things alive and material. Nevertheless, they are art works of the present, illustrating the development in art over these 200 years, confronting us with the rifts in this development and making us aware of the crossroads at which art stands today. Michael Lassel made his decision in this respect against digital and for analogue, for artistic representation which can be perceived with all senses. And not least for analogy, whereby we are aware that irrespective of how pronounced the common characteristics of the world and its realistic, idealistic or surrealistic representation by Michael Lassel might be, there are pronounced differences, specifically a substratum which to some extent undermines and questions the common features, to the degree to which it deceives our senses. Hans-Werner Schuster, cultural Secretary of the Association of Transylvanian Saxons in Germany

Jahrhundert an.
Was das Gegebene total verneint.

(A firului textil?

World tHeatre of Ideas an attemPt about tHe PaInter mICHael lassel frank remmert
”You have nature in front of you and you have to interpret and celebrate it by elevating it. You have to identify with the topic to the extent that you reach a saturation. Therefore i exploit all the faculties i have towards the topic so as to bring it to me, into my world.“ (Michael Lassel, 2016) Michael Lassel is certainly one of the most important contemporary painters. We may regard him – born in 1948 as a Transylvanian Saxon in Romania – as an outstanding heir and custodian of European painting traditions. His work is shown in museums and valued by collectors all over the world. Lassel has been following unerringly his genius for a long time in the face of the opposition of an often uncomprehending art criticism which labels him an outsider. But we – the admirers of his unique work – have only lately become used to seeing the German from Romania as a mediator who cancels out the dividing line between past and present. kitted out with all the characteristics of a robust artistic nature, Lassel has been struggling for decades in his canon of work towards the one true form. Thanks to his draughtsmanship schooled in the old Masters, plus his penetrating analysis and his christian belief, he has created an œuvre which raises the claim to sharpen our awareness of origins and of history.
at tHe InterfaCe of IdealIsm, realIsm, surrealIsm Stylistically, Lassel’s work belongs to ”trompe-l’œil“ painting, a variant of realism born during the Renaissance. The aim of the painting of ”the deception of the eye“ is perfect illusion, a depiction of reality perceived as deceptively true. it is achieved by means
such as central perspective and painted (illusory) architecture, which turns the hierarchically staggered space of the painting into a stage. Such artistic tricks have been used by the masters of illusion like Jacques Poirier, Henry cadiou and Michael Lassel in the 20th and 21st centuries. it’s not enough to allocate Lassel’s art and what it expresses to ”trompe-l’œil“ painting in order to understand it. His painting is preceded by thought. under these conditions, his spiritual tradition reaches back far further, in fact to the origins of Western thinking in Greek antiquity. Even Lassel’s roots anticipate this double ancestry. A passionate European, Lassel is undoubtedly in the tradition of the antique Latin spirit, given his Roman origins, mixed with German heritage. Born in Logig (Ludwigsdorf) in Mureş county, he comes from a part of Romania which was annexed as the province of Dacia to the Roman Empire after being conquered by Emperor Trajan (106 AD). The Greco-Latin heritage rooted in Lassel’s origins leaves deep traces in his work. it actually creates the tension between modern intellectuality and antique idealism, expressed so manifestly in his paintings. The art historian René Huyghe describes the essence of classical-idealistic art as follows: ”Greek art never knew about the separation of physical likeness from the ’likeness resulting from the idea of beauty‘, which can only be divined by the spirit.“ (”The Answer of the Pictures“, 1955) Harmonisation of a reality perceived as unfathomable through the spirit: this ideal was first set out by the philosopher Plato in antiquity and many artists have followed suit to this very day. in his attempt to accentuate plasticity more than the pictorial, with the clear lines of his compositions, the symmetries and the balanced proportions, Lassel stands in this idealistic tradition. Among the favoured requisites of his paintings are antique statues, while titles for his paintings such as ”Pantheon“ and ”Aedicula“ prove his bias for antiquity. But the painter by no means just follows classical-idealising art. Like the authors Jean Anouilh and Jean Giraudoux in their plays set in antiquity, Lassel alienates the spiritual feeling and gives it an ironic-playful expression. on a par, and next to it, stands the second great tradition: the realism of the Dutch painters, especially of the 17th century. The richness of today’s trompe-l’œil painting is inconceivable without the brilliant still lifes of a Pieter claesz or Willem kalf. Their glamorous realistic presentation method has been seldom achieved again even by the best painters. Lassel’s penchant for Rubens is well known. He calls him reverentially ”the god of painting“. He is linked to the Flemish painter not so much by his leonine grasp of his theme but rather by an inner stance: a pure spirit full of vigour, and a contemplative disposition. The combination of these two makes the lyrical-dramatic enchantment of the world possi-
ble. Lassel’s inner view turns the material world around him into a state of the highest spiritual excitement and on its opposite side into a state of meditative silence. often, his sense of reality focusing on the genuine exceeds itself to the extent that – as with Rubens – it goes hand in hand with caricature and exaggeration: ”Trompe-l’œil painting has captured me like one of the most beautiful things in this world. But to create a great variety based on this style is extremely difficult. This kind of painting has a narrow line and its own laws. in order to draw up the material to ’hyper‘ draw it up, you must exaggerate the analysis of the objects, like a cartoonist. You must stress everything far more, for instance the characteristics of a face.“ (M. Lassel, 2016) Lassel further enhances the depiction until realism becomes what he regards as the extreme venture. But he is a christian, so this venture does not mean the abstraction of the world. He is looking for something more substantial, for something that will absorb his antique heritage and his humanity. ”Modern painting for me is always negative: the given, the natural, is not good enough, so one tries to bring in something new. Which totally denies the given. Because i am a believer, i say that what we have in front of us and what i paint is more complicated than what i had already worked out during my studies. And as long as i admire man, i respect what man is. i succeed in this only through trompe-l’œil painting and not through the painting i practised earlier, the abstract one.” (M. Lassel, 2016) Before his emigration to Germany from Bucharest in 1986, Lassel had committed himself to abstract art. ideologically, he was thus on top of his time. But the way of acquirement did not suit his character and soon it lead to a break with this young art form. Getting acquainted with the work of Jacques Poirier (1935-2002) in Paris proved decisive. Lassel immediately recognised in him the innovator of the trompe-l’œil painting of the 20th century. Abstract art proved to be a false path, an attempt to strengthen the ubiquitous nihilism in culture and society in perpetuity. His only answer could be to restore the dignity of man devalued by arbitrariness and to study the dark sides of his soul, the sides which allow evil. This leads to the third line of tradition: the above-mentioned ”hyper-realism“ – which Lassel aims at as a consequence of his artistic work – cannot consist of even more realism, of unadorned naturalism, but only of a French type surrealism. it corresponds to Lassel’s need for Roman spirit more than any other modern style. French surrealists revolutionised art at the beginning of the 20th century by turning their backs on the representation of the outside world. After the triumphal march of realistic painting, they conquered a new terra incognita. Like Sigmund Freud in psychoanalysis, artists like Breton, Dalí and Max Ernst embarked on the
24
discovery of the hidden layers of the psyche: ”Following the doctrines of psychoanalysis … they declared the significance of the unconscious, of the hallucinatory, of the dream and the intoxication, claiming they were as real as the experience of conscious life.“ (karl Ruhrberg: ”20th century Art“) We always have to start from these three lines of tradition in Lassel’s work. We detect them even in pictures which seem to show nothing else but a pile of objects from a flea-market. By elevating them onto a new level, where the rational doesn’t play a big role, he puts them into an unusual relationship to each other. The result is a world enchanted. However, all these artfully depicted scenes exist nowhere else but in our subconscious. They are a dream stage become visible, where the fog of the unconscious spreads ever new veils and things aren’t themselves any more but mean something else. Thanks to Lassel’s genius, a magic transformation takes place.
PaInter of PoWer There is more to it underneath, though. it doesn’t immediately catch the eye, it appears only as an allusion. Many of his paintings refer to old Europe, the history of which ended in 1918 and the First World War. This epochal turning point is unequivocally imprinted in his work. it marks not only the end of a political power system, but also the beginning of an efficient technical feasibility, its perverse nadirs being the holocaust and the atomic bomb. This fatal development continues. The globe is being exploited more brutally than ever with the help of technology. Lassel takes another road: away from technology towards humanity. He celebrates the objects of everyday life: they were made by man in order to survive in a menacing world. He celebrates the being of things, their aura. This is challenged again and again by man’s aspiration to power and by all-consuming time. How else should we interpret the objects in the paintings, the pieces of armour, the weapons, the palaces, the statues, the inscriptions, the crowns? They are witnesses to a power that had become history but which had dominated the psyche of Western man for 2000 years. This was transcended only with the revolution of 1918/1919. Lassel has a tangible penchant for the past; he is no painter of escapism. His ethos prevents him from sending out superficial ”messages“. His imagination takes other ways in order to create meaning. Each object in the picture can be loaded with meaning to the extent that it becomes a symbol – without therefore possessing an exclusive claim. There are other symbols, with a maybe
totally different meaning. Thus the artist circumvents any clear commitment – and moral doctrines along the lines of: ”i am showing you the dangers of the communist regime as it used to be in Romania.“ or ”i warn you of Prussian militarism, which can only lead to war!“ The fact that Lassel was occasionally banned during the ceauşescu years, and the spiked and cuirassier helmets in his paintings would certainly allow for these interpretations. But his political interest is existential even without such superimposed morality: ”if i couldn’t paint i would talk politics with words!“ (M. Lassel, 2016) We can recognise here a serious attitude which grapples with the (present and past) contradictions of society.
a GlanCe Into tHe Past WItHout IllusIons Let us look into the secret current of history which flows in the background of his paintings: ”Pantheon“ (2007): A tomb and memorial site – for a monarch, built out of the remains of our knowledge. The emperor placed so effectively in the limelight is charlemagne. The model is his famous equestrian statue in the Louvre, even if it is presented in an ironic breach as a jointed doll. This pantheon is dedicated to him and it is built only out of books. As though voracious time had left over from the tombs of the past nothing but words. And so it is: not only antique buildings turned to dust, but also states, laws, technologies, any manifestations of former power have survived at best as fragments and ruins! Whatever is left of former greatness has survived in books. They carry our knowledge and outlast the ages. our present rests on these foundations. Applied efficiently, and with their impressive material quality, books create plasticity in the painted space. ”i like to build with books; they have the shape of bricks, one can build with them an intellectual certainty, and for me this means culture“, explains Lassel. As if on a stage, the artist himself is part of the enactment. He watches sceptically in the crystal ball the decay of worlds happening on the outside. He will recreate it later, as a spiritual creation which reminds us of our origins. Didn’t they already call charlemagne in his lifetime the ”father of Europe“? He achieved significance by uniting the Frank Empire. Politicians like kohl and Mitterrand invoked him. Wouldn’t it be obvious to celebrate him as the pride of the Western world? Lassel’s critical eye, his scepticism, forbids this. He introduces as a counterpoint a third figure outside the actual sphere of power. At a due distance, the man we might well describe as a knight also claims a place in the hall of fame. He
25
bravely dedicated his life to the service of the carolingian ruler. Maybe he died during one of his campaigns of conquest. Looking at them like that – side by side – they seem united; one ”lord“ the other ”servant“. But neither can exist without the other; only their social rank separates them. They are connected by a slightly amused expression of their faces. This stops the emperor turning into a monster and returns to the fallen unknown soldier his humanity. Humour and irony are a rich creative source for Lassel. if we follow up the associations, we might even establish a similarity of the two to Don quixote and Sancho Panza … But this is a different topic! it would allow inferences about how Lassel sees the relationship between the individual and power. ”The cathedral ii“ (2008): the starting point is Regensburg cathedral. The famous building is decoded in its spiritual structure. Lassel’s combinatorial phantasy allows free association to flow. The power of the painting lies in the diversity of associations it sets free: apotheosis of the catholic church, apotheosis of architecture and painting, apotheosis of music? All this is possible and leads to the conclusion that the arts have cultic roots and became historical with and on behalf of the church. The Roman catholic church, an all-encompassing power, subjugated the arts. in the history of salvation their only function was to serve. Few artists managed to emancipate themselves from the church, and this only late, in the 18th and 19th centuries. At the end of this development stands the autonomous maker who feels himself to be the ruler of his own world. For the autonomous maker, God is no longer the ultimate good as he is for the believer. ”God is dead“, declared Nietzsche in the 19th century. Lassel, though, doesn’t wish to fully follow this fatal dictum. But the christ figure we would expect in this picture is missing. At most, the red with a violet hint, spread on wood, suggests the suffering of christ. Why on wood? Does it represent the cross, the symbol and deep mystery of christianity? At the front of the picture, red is already transformed into the purple of the cord. (A textile thread? The purple of the cardinals?) We can only speculate whether Lassel actually expresses thereby the reduction of christianity to its visible marks. one thing is sure: he creates the fame of the ”one church“ anew by referring to its cultural achievements over millennia. His cathedral is a shape from a dream, a lucid memorial to all the forces which contributed to this dream about the ”one church“. ”if architecture is frozen music“, as the German philosopher Schelling claims, this is triumphantly expressed in the picture where trumpets, shawms, oboes, horns and clarinets make up the imaginary architecture of the cathedral. concerning the organ manual, which evokes a modern synthesiser with its stops in signal colours, we have to be aware that Lassel plays with meanings like a conjurer who always reshuffles the cards. in harmony with
the deformed horn, these instruments no longer play sacred, festive music which would echo God’s glory. if anything, they sound a concert of dissonance to which contemporary listeners shut their ears long ago. This also belongs to the contemporary essence of the Roman catholic church which is being rocked by all kinds of crises of confidence. its 2,000 year-old cult is reflected only in its external splendour. The expected festive music does not happen. Still, don’t lose hope! This might be the joyous message. The foreground shows the long route travelled by the catholic church. The glass on the floor reflects the sky! A sky soaked in the blood of christ and of the saints. And if we follow the purple ribbon to its very end, we might recognise the healing power at its source. This blue dodecahedron pushed to the extreme side: may we catch sight here of the Holy Ghost? A delicate and profound symbol! And may we not detect in the light it emanates the divine spark in us all? it would be too good to be true! it would mean the task of every man is to renew his faith. Pomp is empty, with no power. But for the free spirit, for the artist, this means that from the power of faith comes forth creative phantasy, working on a new humanity in harmony with reason and beauty. Therein remains the image of man – elevated and noble!
World tHeatre of Ideas This œuvre boldly built up over a lifetime, these paintings wrestled from invisibility with inordinate effort: a lifetime achievement which has mounted the olympus of trompe-l’œil painting and which heralds both metaphysical need and earthly happiness, this fiery unveiling of truth by an affectionate obsessive – what will this œuvre mean to us one day? Will it be recognised as high testimony to the creative spirit which contains the laws of seeing? of seeing objects made by man ”which ease his life and serve his continued existence“ – and not of seeing things which are not and which cannot be, because they refer to a subject who is tired of seeing, a producer of a digital world of pictures without essence and industrial mass products? in Lassel’s artistic vision, the glance of God the creator returns, but also the glance of the autonomous artist who hasn’t been fully abandoned by the belief in God. His œuvre is moving into the world of great art, as in the times which dealt more reverently with such creations than ours. Like the work of the old Masters, Lassel’s œuvre contains an intuition of something perfect which can never be perfect because it has something human added to it. Yet still he longs for the reflection of the heavenly, for the rapture of the soul with the cla-
26
rity of another order. or to say it again with the ancient Greeks: for the splendour of ideas in the sensual garb of his pictures. We have to start from these basic premises when we approach his best works. Historically speaking, he is also a painter of power, a creator of pictures which are reserved for an intellectual and economic elite. The current of history in the underground of his pictures contributes to their world-wide reception: ”Those with power have the knowledge and the explanations for my pictures. They can explain what they see. And this is why they buy a picture. And if a picture is very meaningful, they live better and they know it because they renew their knowledge daily in the face of the pictures!” (M. Lassel, 2016) How did he manage to create an œuvre of such intensity and range? Lassel’s achievement is to have compressed shapes into an ever growing complexity. Everyday objects, seen once, arranged and then newly created, reflect in his display the great ideas of humanity – a story about greatness and tragedy, of demise and resurrection (a permanent metamorphosis which sometimes makes his painting appear so similar). At the beginning stands the object made by human hands, pure, as on the first day. At the end stands knowledge, logos, efflux of divine being. is that maybe where the pyramid-composition in so many of his paintings comes from? We can recognise in the obvious ascent the pyramid of ordered things, the correlation to a cosmic hierarchy. The pyramid unites heaven and earth and brings man – still in his last earthly distance – closer to God. This means for the creator of such works that he will place the depicted objects as absolutes. in every object, seen with the passion of the artist, its spirit prevails! That they are absolute, is his secret. None of Lassel’s paintings depicts nature, there are no landscapes. Everything is a crystal reflection of a spiritual world. But the diversity of shapes in his pictures is similar to that of nature – rich and lavish. its outstanding characteristic is the complexity of form and content. objects are blossoming as on the tree of life, and this is how we might interpret the artist’s most heartfelt desire: We observe how they blossom and branch out in his œuvre into a chain of ever new transformations. Still, everything is an artistic game in these paintings, intelligent construction and – on the formal side – reduction to those elements which tell a story, the great saga of man and his suffering. Even uninvolved viewers cannot evade the pathos of ideas which happen to be theirs, too. With this in mind, we have to thank the artist Michael Lassel that he made the sacrifice and reconciled us with ourselves and our world, with a world which is disappearing fast and is driven out by virtual reality.
