Director’s Report

by Stephen Myer
It was a busy 4th Quarter of 2021 for Herefords in Saskatchewan. Lots of great Hereford stories were made! Kudos to everyone who held events, came out to buy or spectate, volunteered their time and generally helped make it a great one. The fall sale run was a great success and fall shows were just plain fun to be back to. Our first Saskatchewan Fall MOE show was in Lloydminster. This year’s Horned and Polled entries showed together for the first time. It was great to be back at Agribition this year! There is never enough time to do the things or talk to all the people a person would like to, and that was punctuated by last year’s absence. The Hereford Breed had a strong showing in number of cattle and quality throughout the show and sale events. Congratulations to all the show winners this fall. Thank you to everyone who bought tickets on the 2021 Red Coat Heifer Lotto and to Mission
Ridge for donating the heifer calf. The Sask Hereford Association looks forward to holding the Red Coat Bull Jackpot Show next year at Agribition. This show will be somewhat of a return to the roots of the Red Coat with increased prize money, people’s choice and panel judging, and multiple chances to win a new herdsire and numerous donated sale/business credits. Stay tuned for details! A new Saskatchewan Breeder Directory was compiled, produced, and mailed out just prior to Agribition. Be sure to check it out and maybe find some new friends. Any of you that haven’t received a copy contact a board member to get one. Best of luck to everyone with winter feeding, bull sales, and calving. We can all hope mother nature provides us with the needed weather! Stephen Myer

CANADIAN WESTERN AGRIBITION HALL OF FAME
The purpose of the Canadian Western Agribition Hall of Fame is to recognize deserving individuals or groups for their contribution to the success of Canadian Western Agibition. During the fortieth show celebrations one of the highlights was the unveiling of the Canadian Western Agribition Hall of Fame. The first inductees were the group of five men who signed the original documents for the organization. Barry Andrew, Ken Halvorson, Gordon Hollinger, Bill Small and Chris Sutter were recognized as a group. There are less than two dozen inductees in this elite Hall of Fame. In 2021 at the fiftieth Anniversary celebrations, Ted and Mina Serhienko Saskatoon, Saskatchewan along with Doug Sauter, Yukon, Oklahoma, were inducted into the Canadian Western Agribition Hall of Fame. It was only fitting at the kickoff opening of the fiftieth anniversary that the Sutter Family burned the brand. Congratulations Ted, Mina, Doug and the Sutter family.

Chris and Tina Lees’ story: how their battle with cancer brought the cattle community together and raised over $72 000 this year for charity
I
f you look up “devoted” in the dictionary, you may see a picture of Chris and Tina Lees beside the definition. The Lees are a cattle ranching couple from Arcola, SK and the friends they’ve made over decades in the ranching community supported them both on the farm and as they experienced cancer together. On November 1st, 2019, Tina was diagnosed with breast cancer, and had a mastectomy and reconstruction surgery two months later. “I got a free tummy tuck and it only cost me one [breast]”, Tina says jokingly, “You’ve got to look at it upbeat, right?” “I find you got to talk about it. Information is knowledge. There’s no point in pretending it’s not happening. If a complete stranger wants to ask how I got through this and that, I’ll tell them.” While Tina was recovering from her surgery and healing from her treatments, tragedy struck again. Chris was diagnosed with cancer. First prostate, then colorectal. Chris had chemotherapy treatments and radiation therapy followed by surgery in October of 2020. Chris was home healing from surgery, preparing for his next round of chemotherapy, when Tina found something in her underarm – cancer in her lymph

nodes. By December 2020 both Tina and Chris were receiving chemotherapy treatments at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre. “We couldn’t go to Mexico cause of COVID,” Tina says, “so… let’s go to Chemo together!” Chris was coming into Regina from Arcola for treatments twice a week, and Tina once a week. Every Wednesday they’d come in together, so it was dubbed “Date Wednesday”. “They even wanted us to sit together at the cancer clinic! And I was like ‘No, its two hours to get here and two more hours to drive home with him. No, put him around the corner.’ Tina teased, “I got peace and quiet that way.” Tina loves to joke, but she and Chris are there for each other no matter what. That’s part of the ranching culture – you look out for one another. Being cattle ranchers, there’s always work to be done and animals that rely on them. “We got through it. We got through calving and the winter. We got through it with the help of family and friends.” Chris, whose father was a founder of the Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) in 1971, has followed in his father’s footsteps. 50 years later, Chris carries on his legacy in his role as the President of the CWA.

“That’s part of the ranching culture – you look out for one another.”
He and Tina decided that the 2021 CWA Hereford Sale would be a great place to share their story and to give back to organizations that have been there for them and their community; the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan and STARS Air Ambulance. The ranching community and the friends they’ve made through CWA over the past decades answered the call. The Hereford Sale charity auction raised more than $70,000 to help two charities that hold special meaning to the Lees! Funds raised will be shared between the Cancer Foundation in support of the Allan Blair Cancer Centre and STARS so they can continue to help transport people in need of urgent medical care. Living rurally, Chris and Tina understand the importance of having access to this transportation; and after spending many hours at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre, they know the value of the care they received. Thank you, Chris and Tina, for sharing your story and making a positive difference in our province, and to everyone who showed their support by making a donation!
C
From Tina and Chris
hris and I wish to thank each and everyone of you who so generously gave to our donation heifer cause. When we made the decision to offer a heifer at CWA we thought anything at all will be what we hope for with really no expectations. Never did we imagine it would be such a success. With over $72,000 raised, those dollars are appreciated and needed for the charities we chose. The Cancer Foundation of Sask is the sole income earner for the provinces two cancer facilities. And our donation is already ear marked for a new treatment technique at the Allan Blair in the Pasqua Hospital. An area we became very familiar with.
STARS is presented with donation cheque:
The patients that circulate through this facility on a daily basis, 365 days a year, is truly staggering. It humbles you and makes you acutely aware of the professionalism of the people that help us through this cancer journey. The Stars organization is on a perpetual search for donors and sponsors. The dollars needed to keep those big red birds operating is immense. But where would our rural areas be without them. We all know someone who has needed the vital service they provide. These helicopters are a work of art when viewed up close. The amount of life saving equipment on board is eye opening. As is the daily and constant care and cleaning of supplies and the machine itself. If you ever have the chance to tour the Stars facility don’t miss it. Truly overwhelming. Chris and I are not finished with our cancer journey yet. Realistically, I’m not sure one ever is. But — we have been upbeat and positive and will continue with that outlook. Once again — To EVERYONE that had a hand in the success we had that Thursday night during Canadian Western Agribition’s 50th celebrations —

Bull Delivery Shorty wasn’t usually involved in delivering bulls after the sale, but Harry said this guy really needed the bull and it was a ten or twelve hour round trip, so it landed on Shorty. Shorty had called the customer’s home earlier and received detailed, albeit convoluted directions to the ranch. “Jesus Billy, this sounds like you are in the middle of nowhere!” Billy laughed. “Shorty, is it?” “Yeah” “Well Shorty, when you get to the middle of nowhere, keep going to the edge of nowhere and turn left. If you get goin’ you can be here by lunch.” “Yes sir! I am on my way.” That was four hours ago, and Shorty was in the middle of nowhere. He picked up the directions once more and checked his list. He had to find an ESSO gas station on the right and turn left. Ok... Shorty now that done and all he had to do was follow the road and stay to the left. The
pavement ended and the road turned to gravel, then got narrower, then to dirt and finally to one lane and dirt. Shorty really hoped he was on the right track; he was over an hour back to the pavement and there was no place to turn around even if he had to go back. Shorty drove around a sharp bend in the road and there it was, a hayfield, a yard and buildings. He smiled to himself and rattled into the yard. There in front of the shop was an older man that was as big around as he was tall, and he was a tall guy. The old fellow gave Shorty a wave and approached his visitor’s truck. “You Shorty?” The old man extended a hand the size of a baseball glove. “Yes sir.” Shorty shook the man’s hand. “I ain’t no sir Shorty, call me Billy.” “I will Billy. Nice place you got here... just a little out of the way.” “Yeah we don’t get many Jehovah Witness out here Shorty. You hungry?” “I could sure enough eat, Billy. Do you want to

unload the bull first?” Billy walked to the stock trailer and peered in. “Nah he’ll be okay for a bit; he’s layin’ there chewin’ his cud. Come on in.” Shorty followed Billy into the house and met Billy’s wife. She was considerably younger than Billy and a way smaller. She was also a damn fine cook and Shorty figured that fact may have contributed to Billy’s ample girth. Billy and his wife seemed to enjoy the visitor to their ranch as much as Shorty enjoyed his lunch. “Well Shorty, let’s drop the newcomer in the corral and then I want to show you my heifers. You got time to have a look?” “You bet Billy.” “Good! Mama can I borrow your truck? I don’t think ol’ Rusty will start.” Billy’s wife nodded her head, Shorty thanked her for lunch and the two men left the house. They unloaded the bull and Billy lead Shorty past an old Ford half ton, that he guessed was Rusty, to a double garage. Billy opened the overhead door and there inside was a shiny new Chevy three quarter ton. “I just picked this up the other day.” Billy was looking over the truck at Shorty. “I bought it for my child bride so she could take the son to hockey this winter. Doing that ain’t as easy as it is in some places, and she needs a good vehicle to get around.” “It is a nice truck!” Shorty climbed in and watched while Billy fiddled with the driver’s seat so that he could fit behind the wheel. Once Billy was comfortable, he backed the truck out and the two men headed through the yard and onto the road leading to the pasture.
“They sure make these things fancy, huh Shorty?” Billy didn’t wait for an answer. “The salesman said this truck will do everything for you but wipe your nose. I believe him now, I wished I had paid more attention to him, but it is the wife’s truck.” Billy slowed the truck as they approached a gate. “I got it.” Shorty got out and opened the gate so Billy could drive through. He closed the gate and as he walked up on the passenger side, Billy was studying the dashboard of the truck. “Now what the hell is this for?” Billy stabbed a button with a huge index finger. Suddenly the driver’s seat began to move forward and up and didn’t stop until Billy was wedged firmly into the steering wheel. Billy’s eyes were scanning the dash for the button to correct the situation, but his considerable girth had blocked his line of sight to pretty much everything in front of him. Shorty realized that he had to go around and manually return the driver’s seat to the position it had just left and so he jumped out of the truck and headed for the driver’s side. Billy, in the meantime was rather uncomfortable and was frantically searching for any button to remedy his situation. He could see only one button, a blue button on the underside of the rear-view mirror, so in desperation, he pushed that one. “Good afternoon Mr. Bailey. Can I help you?” Billy was suddenly still. Beads of sweat started to form on his brow, and he was rolling his eyes upward. “Oh Lord...Is that you? If so, I am sorry for missing church so damn often, I mean so darn often. I am sorry for voting against women priests, I swear I didn’t know you were a woman.”

“Mr. Bailey, I am not God I am Amber from On Star. Can I help you?”
at Shorty, who had returned to the passenger seat.
“Amber from where? Where are you and how do you know my name?”
“Okay. You have yourself a good day. Oh, and Mr. Bailey?”
By now Shorty had the driver’s door open and was moving Billy away from the steering wheel. “On Star. I am Amber from On Star. I am in Atlanta and I am here to help. Now what is the problem and how can I help?”
“Yes Amber.” “You really should be going to church and there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a few women priests. Have a nice day.” The truck was silent. Billy got out of the cab and motioned to Shorty to do the same. He walked away from the truck and when Shorty joined him, he stopped.
“Well Amber, I was stuck but Shorty got me free.” “Do you need a tow truck Mr. Bailey?” “No. The truck wasn’t stuck, I was stuck in the truck, but it is all good now.” “Are you sure Mr. Bailey?” “Yes I am. How are you talking to me? We have no cell coverage out here. If you are in Atlanta, you have no idea where I am.” “We have GPS in all our vehicles, and we can tell where you are within twenty feet at any time, with or without cell phone coverage. Are you sure you are okay?” Billy was visibly perplexed. He was looking around the truck to see if he was missing something but could find nothing. “I am okay, thank you Miss.” Billy looked over
“You think she can still hear us?” Billy whispered. “Naw. I think they only listen when you call them. Just to be careful though I wouldn’t be tellin’ no secrets in that truck Billy. You never know.” “Dammit Shorty that freaks me out. I will tell you what, the Missus can have that truck... and if her and I go anywhere together it will be in Rusty.” The two men got back into the truck and continued their cattle tour… in silence. Shorty couldn’t help but wonder what Amber from On Star had told her co-workers. After all, she had been mistaken for God.
Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

The Value Of A Herd Health Program
Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.
Often the most significant changes that occur during the span of one’s career in an industry often go largely unnoticed. It is as if we forget what it used to be like, or we simply accept the new normal as the way it has always been. The number of beef cow-calf herds, both commercial and purebred, that can boast that they have a herd health program has been steadily increasing. Because of this, many disease outbreaks that used to be common seem like they are rarely heard of compared to forty and fifty years ago. Still, not all herds have a program leaving us all at risk of purchasing a problem, or particularly for seedstock producers, selling animals that will move into atrisk herds where your animals may not realize their full potential. A blog posted in March 2020 on the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) website entitled: The Cost Benefit of Using Vaccines in Beef Cattle reports on survey research which showed that in Western Canada 10 percent of producers do not vaccinate for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) both of which can result in respiratory disease and devastating losses due to abortion. Worse still is that BVDV may result in the birth of generally poor performing persistently BVDV-infected (PI) calves that continue to shed the virus within the herd. The proportion of beef producers with an appropriate vaccination program decreases in Eastern Canada with a third of Ontario Cattle Call 30
producers not vaccinating against BVDV and over one quarter of Atlantic Canadian producers not utilizing vaccines at all. Bovine respiratory disease which includes everything from coughing calves, to shipping fever, and pneumonia has been and still is the costliest disease affecting the cattle industry. If they survive, affected cattle are never quite right. Those that experience severe, longstanding illness are prone to other conditions affecting the rumen because of damage to the vagus nerve as it passes through the chest. The BCRC blog provides data from a study which showed that calves that experienced respiratory disease could weigh up to 36 pounds less than their healthy herd mates. Most of these losses will go unnoticed since only the poor performers are recognized while others appear normal or develop seemingly unrelated conditions later in life. For example, most poor doing calves that are mild to moderate, repeat bloaters likely had a bout of calfhood pneumonia. There is no way to cure those calves or to regain the performance lost due to respiratory disease. Prevention in the form of an effective vaccination program is the best way to go yet herd vaccination programs have tended to be undervalued in the cattle industry. Supported by difficulties in verifying that purchased calves have been properly vaccinated and an almost steady stream of evermore effective
antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory products the significance of major improvements in vaccines and vaccine strategies has largely been overshadowed. The BCRC has provided a useful tool designed to help producers calculate the financial premium that could be assigned to a vaccinated calf: CostBenefit of Feeding BRD (Bovine Respiratory Disease) Vaccinated Calves tool. Check it out! Assigning dollar values to the benefit of management inputs is significant for any industry. What is the difference between a herd health program and a vaccination program? Although, answers may vary, I will define a vaccination program as simply administering a standard set of vaccines to part, or all the herd at specific times. The vaccine program may provide suitable protection against major diseases, but the key is that the producer generally has limited communication with a veterinarian regarding what is best for the herd. For many, this may be all that they want; it works for them! A herd health program is developed in consultation with your veterinarian and includes more than just a vaccine program. A solid vaccination program will be the core of any beef herd health program, but a proper herd health program should never be a no questions asked, drug dispensing relationship with a vet. Although convenient pickup is handy, there should be communication with your veterinarian about what you should be vaccinating against, when you should be vaccinating, and which products/product combinations are best for your operation. Modified live vaccines, containing attenuated live virus are generally recommended over killed virus vaccines because of better, longer lasting immune protection. Often modified live vaccines can not be used in pregnant animals apart from a limited group of products that require initial vaccination to have occurred when the animal was not pregnant. Vaccine programs to prevent calf scours, foot rot,
clostridial diseases (e.g., blackleg), Leptospira infections, pinkeye, respiratory diseases in calves, and venereal disease are available. For most herds, vaccinating against every infectious agent possible will be overkill unless the bottom line is of little concern. Other components of herd health programs involve development of biosecurity plans for your herd, antiparasitic use, necropsies of deadstock, nutrition consultation, pregnancy checking, record keeping and assessment of herd performance. New products and services are being developed all the time. Because we operate in an industry with tight margins it is important to be able to realize a tangible return on investment. The most important component of an effective herd health program is good communication. You and your vet need to have regular, scheduled meetings to review the program. Once a year is likely suitable in most situations and is appropriate to maintaining a valid vet client patient relationship (VCPR). Specifically discuss disease risks, vaccines, goals, and cost to benefit. The names of products and protocols should be provided in writing. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are very useful even for owner/managers because we can all be forgetful. Many seedstock producers have sound herd health programs established and can play a role in promoting the benefits of these programs to others. The commercial cattle industry often views seedstock producers as industry leaders so it should not be surprising that one of the most common reasons a commercial buyer will give for purchasing at your sale is because of your reputation as a producer. If you have a herd health program be proud of it and describe it in your sale catalogue or at your sale. Don’t be afraid to ask your vet for input … they might even right up a camera-ready letter that can be included in your catalogue. Herd health programs bring tremendous value to operation and to your reputation.
