It was a business plan made of necessity. Shortly after Mike Munton returned to Warner, Alta., after earning his animal science degree from Oklahoma State University in the U.S., the uproar over “mad cow disease” forced the Benchmark Angus Ranch to let markets dictate their management.
Yes, it was 2003, when Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) was discovered and beef cattle markets dropped like a stone, staying in the ruts to create long-term challenges. Like most cow-calf producers they sell bulls to, the Muntons sold some cattle at auction from among those that didn’t make the cut for breeding. An all-time low bid of 47 cents per pound on fat cattle in those days forced the family to adopt new ways of thinking that could build a future.
“We had to figure out some way to add value,” Munton says. It suddenly became very clear that consumers had the power to dictate price, which had little potential to rise unless something changed. They turned their attention to raising animals that would gain consumer confidence and appreciation. It was a necessity that yielded longevity. Today, they work to make management dictate their own markets, Munton says, and it’s profitable as an enterprise within their 500-cow registered Angus herd on the 10,000-acre ranch. Those cows have much in common with commercial herds, the 1,345-lb. cows weaning 645-lb. calves. “If the genetics are right, you can see up to $100 premium per head just by having a premium carcass,” he says, “so there is real value there as far as putting dollars in a guy’s pockets.” As they began to sell beef directly to restaurants and retailers, the Muntons formed a closer understanding of exactly what it was beef eaters wanted, and have been building a model to perfect ranch production to meet those demands ever since. The purebred Angus rancher works with his father, Doug Munton, building a new era to the quality-minded dynasty that their family laid the foundation for in Vulcan, Alta., 84 years ago.

They started feeding those culls as commercial cattle when markets where at the bottom of the BSE bin, finishing them for custom purchase and meeting consumer needs from there. “It became about just controlling every aspect of it, and we are able to do that,” Munton says. “We birth them, grow them, feed them, kill them, cut them, everything. Conception to consumption.”
AAA for sure. That is something that we want to do 100 percent of the time.” A keen focus on genetic progress allows them to predict what the ultrasound tests will confirm. The ultrasound data also feeds back into expected progeny difference (EPD) data they use to guide selection. “We are strong believers in the EPDs,” Munton says. “I think the best thing about EPDs is that it takes out the variable of each environment on each ranch.” He compares it to crop selection: “If you do research and find that this canola is going to yield better, then you’d be foolish not to use it.” Taking it back to cattle and EPDs, he says, “The commercial guy can see, if one bull is a +.40 marbling and another is a +.10, the +.40 is better. If the bulls are the same otherwise and you like them equally, that is an obvious and simple choice.”
Fortunately, it wasn’t all new to them. The ranchers began ultrasound scanning cattle to gauge ribeye size a decade before BSE hit. “Results dictate what our cow herd is going to produce,” Munton says. That goes for bulls and heifers, each tested as yearlings for ribeye size, marbling score and backfat. “If we have a female that is really great ribeye, good marbling, low backfat, that is a keeper heifer for sure.” Their ideal fat steer registers a 13-inch ribeye. A bull should be larger at that age, he says, and 16 to 17 inches will push the envelope on lean meat yield. But that shouldn’t come at the expense of marbling. The right genetic balance provides the perfect combination of less waste fat and more taste fat. On a 13-inch ribeye, they shoot for at least 4 percent marbling on the ultrasound. “Anything above 4 percent marbling is an AAA grade. Anything with a 7.5 is Prime,” he says. “We want to hit

you are going to get a discount if they are over fat,” he says. “That discount is huge, so we want to optimize marbling, ribeye and minimize external fat.” Other feeders take notice of cattle that consistently earn more premiums than discounts, too. That’s good news for Benchmark customers who want to partner with custom finishers selling on the grid.

Those are the plants that churned out the 17 million pounds of Canadian-grown beef that met CAB specifications in 2012. But 37 million pounds of CAB product were sold within Canadian borders that year, creating opportunities for cattlemen to keep working on the home-grown percentage. In fiscal 2013, each number moved up by 3 million pounds (22 million produced, a 26% increase). As 2014 takes shape, CAB marketers see 9% growth for Canada, and the potential for considerably more than half of that supply to come from Canadian herds.
“I think that is why we are seeing more awareness of the carcass traits, because that is becoming part of the reflection,” he says. “The guys that buy calves put them on feed and then on the grid, then they are able to get premiums, so they come back next year and say, ‘Hey we want your calves because we know what they did, and we can realize more value when we go to sell those cattle on the grid as opposed to just selling everything live on the hoof.” As for that decision in 2003, born of necessity? But in saying that, we are just going to keep going until we have everything absolutely maximized, and that is a lifetime.”

Press Release Canadian Angus Youth Come Home as Champions October 18, 2013: for immediate release
CALGARY, AB — The Canadian Angus Association on behalf of the Canadian Angus Foundation is thrilled to announce the Canadian Angus youth chosen last spring to compete in the Youth Programme at the 2013 PGG Wrightson World Angus Forum have been awarded champion and reserve champion world titles! Canada sponsored three teams of four individuals (totaling 12) to compete at the prestigious inaugural event in New Zealand. The Canucks with team members Jared Hunter, Didsbury, Alberta (captain); Patrick Holland, Montague, Prince Edward Island; Melissa McRae, Brandon, Manitoba; and Michael Hargrave, Maxwell, Ontario, brought home the world champion title along with $10,000 NZ prize money!

“I am so honored to have been selected to represent Canada on this prestigious trip and winning it is truly unbelievable!” said Melissa McRae, winning team member. “I want to thank all the sponsors, organizers and volunteers for making this my best trip ever! Also to congratulate all the other competitors for welcoming us Canadians and for all for their hard work!” The reserve champion world title was also awarded to a Canadian team, Team BsquarED, consisting of captain Erika Easton, Wawota, Saskatchewan; Ty Dietrich, Forestburg, Alberta; Kaitlynn Bolduc, Stavely, Alberta; and Matthew Bates, Cameron, Ontario. Bates was also announced the high individual for the entire contest, scoring highest in the most challenges as an individual. Matt Bates explained to his peers after his win, “Named world champion today at the 2013 World Angus Forum Youth Programme in Auckland, New Zealand… Cloud nine doesn’t begin to describe it.” The third team of outstanding youth representing Canada was The Eh Team and included Sean Enright, Renfrew, Ontario, as captain; Stacey Domolewski, Taber, Alberta; Chad Lorenz, Markerville, Alberta; and Breanna Anderson, Swan River, Manitoba. The Eh Team brought home honours for champion Team Presentation. Team members traveled to Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand, on October 9 for a five section contest including general knowledge, Reserve World Champion Team - Team BsquarED parading (presentation, showmanship and sportsmanship with an Angus animal), stock judging, animal preparation (clip an animal for show) and agri-sports (hands-on team challenge involving day-to-day tasks). Team members also had the chance to visit Angus studs in the area and participate in an adrenaline tour with the 10 other teams from across the world. New Zealand included a 150-year celebration of Angus in their country and featured a first-class celebration. Today’s Angus Advantage 34
Canadian team members would like to provide a special thank you to Atahua, Turiroa and Kakahu studs for providing heifers for use during the competition. “I wish all of our [CAA] members could have been here [at the World Angus Forum] to experience this,” said Canadian Angus Association CEO Rob Smith. “Our 12 youth had pride and gratitude for representing us so well this past week. Countless individuals have told me how impressed they were by our capable, friendly, polite Canadian youth ambassadors. We have so very much to be thankful for as our nation celebrated Thanksgiving last week, including a future that includes 12 outstanding young leaders and Angus breeders!” Initially, the Canadian Angus Foundation had committed to sending up to eight individuals for two Canadian teams to the competition. After reviewing applications, the additional four youth were made possible by an additional contribution from the CAA Board of Directors to financially support this program to include funding for three teams of four. “Thanks to donors and supporters of the Canadian Angus Foundation’s Building the Legacy Sale along with the Canadian Angus Association and Canadian Angus Foundation Board of Directors,” said Smith. “Without your donation, dedication, leadership and vision, these young folks would not have had this opportunity to bring home the world at the inaugural WAF Youth Programme as the top two champion teams on the globe as well as the top individual.” The Canadian Angus Foundation functions to preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research, and historical preservation. They all have to go through the feedlot phase, so that’s when we started working more closely with that segment.” AMG joins scores of CAB feeding partners in the U.S., and group members see the new relationship as an opportunity to improve carcass quality at the feedlot and producer level. This fall they took another step forward and became the first Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand Feeding Partner in Canada. “We want to be able to make those links with the ranchers, the producers,” Kasko said. “I think being the first one gives us that advantage to make some stronger connections. We have a lot to offer as feedlots to those producers.” Collectively, the group manages 11 feed yards with a one-time capacity of more than 110,000 head. Their new partnership with CAB will help them to better work with producers to deliver premiums and translate the value of carcass data.
AMG members hope to improve efficiency on the individual lots by gaining insight on when cattle should be marketed. As is the nature of the supply chain, success depends on the cooperation of multiple links. “It’s a three-way partnership between the feeder, the cow-calf producer and CAB as a marketing organization,” said Mitschke. CAB’s relationship with retail and restaurant licensees across Canada can help feedlots and groups like AMG gain a better understanding of consumer wants and needs, Kasko said. “We’re all family operations and we all live on the feedlots we run,” Stronks said. “It shows you how committed we are to what we do and how we do things. We live and breathe this every day.” That’s a connection that resonates with consumers who buy the CAB brand, whether at retail or off the menu, Corah said. Very rarely does a week go by that I am not asked about the reasons to advertise or the differences between various types of online marketing. While there are any number of answers to the question, depending on the individual, these are some of the reasons that apply to everyone.
REASONS TO Advertise Reach new customers The purebred market and the livestock industry is always changing. New operations begin as old operations disperse. Peoples’ income changes, which means changes in lifestyles and buying habits. The bull buyer who would not consider your bull a few years ago may be a prime customer now. Advertise continuously People don’t have loyalty to a program or the attention span they once did. You must advertise to keep pace with your competition because there is always a competitor that is willing to advertise to get former customers to return and to seek new ones. Remain top of mind until they make a decision Many people postpone making buying decisions. Some buyers will go from sale to sale comparing prices, quality and service. Your name must be fresh in their minds when they pull the trigger. Your competition is advertising There are only so many consumers in the market who are ready to buy at any one time. You need to advertise to keep regular customers, and to counterbalance the advertising of your competition. You must advertise to keep your share of customers, or you will lose them to more aggressive advertisers. Generate traffic to your door and your program Traffic to your program is the first step toward sale increases and expanding your customer base. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make a sale. Increase sales Advertising works! Look at the breed leaders (maybe you’re one of them). Those that succeed are usually strong and steady advertisers. Look around, and you will see that the most aggressive and consistent advertisers in the industry are the most successful. There is always business to generate As long as you’re in business, you have new customers to reach. Advertising not only generates customers now... but in the future as well.

REASONS TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA It’s an additional program showcase Experts say that a potential customer has to see or hear of your business at least three times, preferably in three different places, before they will shop. That may mean meeting you at a show, sale event or in a magazine ad. Social media may be that additional avenue to enhance visibility and brand recognition. You can post up-to-the-minute news In this fast-paced world, you can post your latest information and updates on Twitter and Facebook. Enhance your customer relations You’ll build trust and loyalty by communicating with your customers via social media with others that use social media. It’s free... almost Setting up an initial social presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and many other sites is free of charge, although maintaining and creating content does require your time.
REASONS YOU MUST HAVE A WEBSITE Credibility To any business, especially the cattle business, trust and credibility is key. Yes, it’s easy to create a Facebook Page for your ranch, but this low barrier to entry means that many scammers can also add fake business pages. A website is a step further in credibility. It involves purchasing a domain name and putting thought into content that accurately describes your business. This added depth can’t be matched with any social media presence. Social media is all about the moment Where social media is all about what is happening this second, a website lets you display the information you want, in a format that is always accessible. One only has to try to find something from a few weeks ago in their news feed to realize that social media is about what’s happening that moment. Control The best analogy I have heard is the difference between renting and owning your own home. When you own a house, it’s easy to make improvements, changes or fixes. On the other hand, if you are renting, it is either difficult or prohibited. The same principle applies to the web. When you have a presence on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn, you are essentially “renting” space from them, and they have all the control. A website allows you to be in total control of your programs image. Having a Hub Think of your marketing like an old wagon wheel. Your strategy should have several spokes that connect back to one center hub. A website is the hub of your marketing. It serves as the one place to which you send new customers for information. Using only social media removes the hub, and the wheel crumbles. Communication Communication is at the heart of social media. The problem is, how you communicate is dictated by the social website you are using. A website allows visitors to choose how they want to communicate, whether it’s via email, Facebook, Twitter or old fashioned telephone. Social media are there to make money for their share holders not you The ads you see, the extra links to click, the innocent time wasters are there to market their message and their advertisers message, so they can make money. The Final Word...
Ownership has its privileges ... an advertising slogan used by a financial institution which can now be referred to by every Angus breeder in our nation. Congratulations breeders, for being a part of “Angus Central” officially opening December 11th. This valued asset fortifies that fact of being the largest and most progressive beef breed in Canada. No doubt, the transition of offices will add a bit of turmoil; therefore breeders must be patient, but not use the move as an excuse for tardy paperwork. As the technological facet of breeding cattle becomes a higher priority each year, breeders must be prudent in reporting accurate performance information for the data base. Whether you like it or not, Bob, EPD’s are here to stay and will play a monumental part in the breeding and selection of purebred seed stock. Now genomics are providing us Genomically Enhanced EPD’s which will provide a higher degree of accuracies for young animals and animals with limited performance data. For those who do not understand genomics, ask, read and learn, to preserve and enhance your marketing and market share in the future of your herd. Putting it in plain, “down on the farm” logic … the higher degree of accuracy on a good herd bull prospect, the higher the price in the marketplace. Feedlots and packers are now using, studying and compiling these genomic traits into their systems to get a higher degree of return. It is time to pull out your knife ... as a matter of fact, sharpen it. The result of spring bull sales demonstrated the simple economics, that there are fewer cows in the country. The high grain prices over the last few years helped many mixed farming operation make decisions about production and the aging factor of the farming community did not help. No doubt, the top end of the bull pen commanded more money than in years past, but there was plenty of pressure on the low middle to bottom end as well. Feeder and stocker prices are high and climbing; therefore a ring or knife will clean up your bull pen and have someone other than you feeding them. It will give you an instant return, a yardage and maintenance benefit and most importantly, offer you the luxury of not selling a common bull to your good customers. Just because they are light weight, does not make them heifer bulls! In your busy fall season, prior to the next six months of white, you must schedule some time to go to calf sales.... your customer’s calf sales. With the glut of grain, feeder and stocker prices inching higher weekly, there will be many happy smiles, even grins. Now is the time to call your bull buyers, see when they sell their calves and make an effort to worry about their breeding programs, especially if they are using your bulls. Granted you cannot see them all sell, but visibility at special calf sales is foremost. Phone calls to customers in times of good calf markets are feel good situations for the breeder and the cow/calf producer. Since the worst marketer is a purebred breeder, it would be timely for you to get out of your comfort zone and make a few calls, which will prove rewarding, no matter if the Riders are playing or not!
