You Ought To Know... the Hereford breed in Canada is entering a “New Era.” If the September run of sales in Eastern Canada is any indication of what lies ahead, the “Red & White” breed is entering into a bull market. Large attendance, some new faces and an abundance of enthusiasm made the cumulative total of three sales average over $5300.00. Although the current year heifer calves are seemly the most popular, the strength was most visual in the bull calves, where the bull market has been sluggish in a good year. Our neighbors to the south are recording record breaking sales as big new players are embarking in Herefords, even though they are very successful in their other chosen breed(s). They are looking at Herefords as the next “hot” breed of the future ... quite ironic, since this breed was one of the first to land on the North American continent. The “New Era” brings a new, young, General Manager knowledgeable of the changing world where genomics will become a necessity for advancement. With this change comes the hope for a better direction of unity, as one breed, rather than what has been in the past … based on the shape of a head. Since the discovery of BSE a decade ago, all purebred breeds lost membership and the Hereford breed was not immune. Therefore, in this new era, fewer breeders must be prepared to pay more for the services and technology required, for the breed to move forward. Although the youth of the breed appear to sustain membership, a movement to attract new adult breeders must hit the boardroom agenda. Western Canada has experienced one of the rarest years in history. It seemed that from the winter season, we went directly into summer … as there were still snow drifts in wooded areas in May. Grain farmers, who stewed and sweated over getting their crops planted early enough to escape frost, were rewarded with ideal growing conditions, both in temperature and rainfall. The bumper crop in Western Canada is for real ... as stated by an old-timer, “Son, you will never see this again.” With a record setting abundance of feed grain, record setting stocker prices, the impending threat of North American restocking, the demand for breeding females will be at a premium and most importantly, for many years to come. This bodes well for the Hereford breed as it moves into the new era. For those who read the line above, concerning the strength of the bull calf market at the Ontario sales, do not put away your knife ... as a matter of fact sharpen it. The results of spring bull sales demonstrated the simple economics of telling us there are fewer cows in the country. The high grain prices over the last few years have helped many mixed farming operation make decisions about production and the aging factor of the farming community did not help. No doubt, the top end of the bull pen commanded more money than in years past, but there was plenty of pressure on the low middle to bottom end as well. Feeder and stocker prices are high and climbing; therefore a ring or knife will clean up your bull pen and have someone other than you feeding them. It will give you an instant return, a yardage and maintenance benefit and most importantly, offer you the luxury of not selling a common bull to your good customers. Just because they are light weight, does not make them heifer bulls!

I Just Thought You Ought To Know.

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.

Is Foot Measurement an Acceptable Method for Weighing Calves? Purebred cattle breeders know that calf birth weights should be recorded within 24 hours of birth. The CalfscaleTM developed and patented in 1987 by Marshall Ruble, Beef Teaching Station Manager for Iowa State University represents a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to determine a calf’s weight. By measuring the circumference of the calf’s front foot at the coronary band (hoof-hair junction) it is possible to determine body weight based on a strong correlation between the hoof size of the calf and its weight. The tape is doublesided, one side for heifers, the other for bulls. Place it around the coronary band of a forelimb so that you are reading the appropriate side and pull it snug; an arrow points to the hoof circumference in centimetres and the corresponding weight in pounds. The tape can be easily folded and held in a pocket eliminating the need to transport scales to the pasture or paddock, or tote calves to the scale. Because it is made of vinyl, the tape is durable and washable which is especially good for those who forget to empty pockets on wash day. Weigh scales are not without fault. Aside from being more expensive than the tape, spring scales are prone to rust or spring tension may vary over time. Electronic load cell-type, hydraulic and traditional balance beam scales all can become inaccurate. To maintain accuracy all scales should be checked periodically within weight ranges typically used. Calf birth weight can vary too – What if the calf is wet? What if it urinates? What about if it nurses? What about fluid loss simply from breathing? I have always assumed that natural fluid losses are probably compensated for when the calf nurses. In preparation for this article, I contacted the Canadian Angus Association, Canadian Hereford Association and the Canadian Limousin Associations to ask what their preferred method of determining calf birth is. All recommended the use of a weigh scale. With a hunch that the heavier the calf the bigger the feet, the hoof circumference – body weight determination system was developed by first recording the hoof circumference and corresponding body weight of a group of calves as a single point on a graph. It was realized that not only were the hoof sizes for calves of given weight similar, but the relationship was also linear - heavier calves had bigger feet. Therefore, it was now possible to determine the approximate weight of a newborn calf by measuring its hoof. Like birth weights, weaning weight and yearling weights, hoof circumference and birth weight are positively correlated. The coefficient of correlation in this case, however, was very high at 0.84. A perfect relationship would have a coefficient of correlation of 1.0 which might occur if the weights of calves were recorded using two different weigh scales. Unfortunately, I was unable to determine the breed of cattle or the number of measurements that comprised the dataset used to develop the CalfscaleTM, but I am now aware that there is a tape available for dairy calves and one specifically for beef calves. But is the CalfscaleTM okay to use instead of a scale? Last winter two of my colleagues, Drs. Joe Stookey and John Campbell, and I posed this same question. First we conducted a literature search to see if any other scientists had compared foot measurement

Herefords Today  21

at birth with conventional scales – we found one scientific study from Mississippi where four different methods for determining calf birth weight were compared on 587 calves of various beef breeds. Birth weights were recorded using a visual estimate; CalfscaleTM; a hanging spring scale and a small electronic digital scale. Birth weights collected using the spring scale and digital scale were the most accurate. Visual estimate and CalfscaleTM tended to underestimate high birth weights and the CalfscaleTM tended to overestimate low birth weights. We thought it would be fun to compare the CalfscaleTM with conventional weigh scales in our own area to see if our results were similar to others. Our dataset included 190 beef calves in three herds – my own Red Angus herd, our University of Saskatchewan Goodale Farm commercial Hereford herd and Joe’s Speckle Park herd. Three new CalfscaleTM tapes were purchased and each herd utilized a different type of weigh scale. The scales varied from a digital livestock scale using load cell technology, to a spring scale with an easy-to-see digital readout, to a high quality bathroom scale placed on a level surface. In all 3 herds, the scales recorded heavier average calf weights than the tape. Overall, when the data were combined the average calf weight was a statistically significant 4.3 lbs. heavier using the scale verses the tape (94 lbs. vs. 89.7 lbs.). Interestingly, our coefficient of correlation was identical to Marshall Ruble’s at 0.84; however, we also noticed that as calf weight increased so did the difference between each of the measuring systems. In other words, the CalfscaleTM tended to underestimate high birth weights. The same finding reported in the Mississippi study. So what can we can we conclude? The CalfscaleTM is indeed a simple and inexpensive way to determine the approximate weight of a calf and for commercial herds interested in recording birth weights or for determining birth to weaning gains it is a great tool. Personally, I found it tiresome throwing and sitting on calves verses walking them into a scale; but others might not mind. For purebred breeders submitting calf birth weight data to breed associations I believe we need to be as accurate as possible. Honest data submission for national cattle evaluations makes EPDs more reliable. The CalfscaleTM is arguably more objective than a best guess, but investing in a scale is better. Furthermore, the reality of purebred bull sales is that potential buyers are more likely to study actual birth weights rather than EPDs. A high birth weight can often greatly affect the price or salability of an individual animal. In the words of Anne Burgess, General Manager of the Canadian Limousin Association; there exists the 100-pound mental block – in many cases a bull with a birth weight over 100 lbs. will not sell. The reality is that there are many great calves with birth weights in the 90’s and many more over 100, just look at our 94 lb. average. Let’s be honest - lying about calf weights will always occur, but if you are serious about improving cattle performance through your breeding program then the recording accurate data is a must. Invest in a scale and share your records and knowledge with commercial producers. a Parish JA et al. Evaluation of four different methods of calf birth weight data collection. CANADIAN HEREFORD ASSOCIATION (CHA) HIRES A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Canadian Hereford Association is pleased to announce the hiring of Stephen Scott as the new Executive Director/General Manager. Stephen was raised on a traditional dairy, beef, cash crop farm in Southwestern Ontario. He received a B.Sc. in Animal Biology and a M.Sc. in Dairy Health Management, both from the University of Guelph. His experience gained from working for Alta Genetics, where he assisted in the design and implementation of a new genomically enhanced young sire test program for Canada will be a great asset for the CHA. For the last few years he has been the Market Analyst for the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA), where he provided insight into global meat trade. While there, he also led projects on Canadian consumer meat preferences, the benefits of traceability, assessing regulatory burden and sustainability of the Canadian beef industry. As Executive Director of Canadian Hereford Association, he is excited to have the opportunity to support an industry that is undergoing the transformation to the genomic era–a tool that will prove invaluable to the future of the beef industry. He is looking forward to be back working with grass roots producers. Stephen will officially commence employment with the CHA December 1, 2013.

Very rarely does a week go by that I am not asked about the reasons to advertise or the differences between various types of online marketing. While there are any number of answers to the question, depending on the individual, these are some of the reasons that apply to everyone.

REASONS TO Advertise Reach new customers The purebred market and the livestock industry is always changing. New operations begin as old operations disperse. Peoples’ income changes, which means changes in lifestyles and buying habits. The bull buyer who would not consider your bull a few years ago may be a prime customer now. Advertise continuously People don’t have loyalty to a program or the attention span they once did. You must advertise to keep pace with your competition because there is always a competitor that is willing to advertise to get former customers to return and to seek new ones. Remain top of mind until they make a decision Many people postpone making buying decisions. Some buyers will go from sale to sale comparing prices, quality and service. Your name must be fresh in their minds when they pull the trigger. Your competition is advertising There are only so many consumers in the market who are ready to buy at any one time. You need to advertise to keep regular customers, and to counterbalance the advertising of your competition. You must advertise to keep your share of customers, or you will lose them to more aggressive advertisers. Generate traffic to your door and your program Traffic to your program is the first step toward sale increases and expanding your customer base. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make a sale. Increase sales Advertising works! Look at the breed leaders (maybe you’re one of them). Those that succeed are usually strong and steady advertisers. Look around and you will see that the most aggressive and consistent advertisers in the industry are the most successful. There is always business to generate As long as you’re in business, you have new customers to reach. Advertising not only generates customers now... but in the future as well.

REASONS TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA It’s an additional program showcase Experts say that a potential customer has to see or hear of your business at least three times, preferably in three different places, before they will shop. That may mean meeting you at a show, sale event or in a magazine ad. Social media may be that additional avenue to enhance visibility and brand recognition. You can post up-to-the-minute news In this fast-paced world, you can post your latest information and updates on Twitter and Facebook. Enhance your customer relations You’ll build trust and loyalty by communicating with your customers via social media with others that use social media. It’s free... almost Setting up an initial social presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and many other sites is free of charge, although maintaining and creating content does require your time.

REASONS YOU MUST HAVE A WEBSITE Credibility To any business, especially the cattle business, trust and credibility is key. Yes, it’s easy to create a Facebook Page for your ranch, but this low barrier to entry means that many scammers can also add fake business pages. A website is a step further in credibility. It involves purchasing a domain name and putting thought into content that accurately describes your business. This added depth can’t be matched with any social media presence. Social media is all about the moment Where social media is all about what is happening this second, a website lets you display the information you want, in a format that is always accessible. One only has to try to find something from a few weeks ago in their news feed to realize that social media is about what’s happening that moment. Control The best analogy I have heard is the difference between renting and owning your own home. When you own a house, it’s easy to make improvements, changes or fixes. On the other hand, if you are renting, it is either difficult or prohibited. The same principle applies to the web. When you have a presence on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn, you are essentially “renting” space from them, and they have all the control. A website allows you to be in total control of your programs image. Having a Hub Think of your marketing like an old wagon wheel. Your strategy should have several spokes that connect back to one center hub. A website is the hub of your marketing. It serves as the one place to which you send new customers for information. Using only social media removes the hub, and the wheel crumbles. Communication Communication is at the heart of social media. The problem is, how you communicate is dictated by the social website you are using. A website allows visitors to choose how they want to communicate, whether it’s via email, Facebook, Twitter or old fashioned telephone. Social media are there to make money for their share holders not you The ads you see, the extra links to click, the innocent time wasters are there to market their message and their advertisers message, so they can make money. A website is 100% you. Herefords Today  25

2013 Maritime Hereford Futurity In addition to the usual high quality Hereford show, which is an annual event at the Cumberland County Exhibition, a milestone was met this year.

The Maritime Hereford Futurity was held for the 25th year since it’s beginning in 1989. The show was watched by some of the founding organizers including Keith Blenkhorn and George D’Orsay. We were also pleased to have an old friend who hails from Pownal P.E.I., Mr. Don Smith. Don seldom misses this show and he won it more than a couple times in the early 1990’s. Our judge for this year’s show was Jeff Larkin. Jeff breeds Red Angus cattle and hails from Musquodobbit N.S. We were also pleased to have Mr. Marvin Peters, owner of MIP Show & Livestock Supply, present for his 17th year as the show’s major sponsor. Marvin presented the $300 first place award to OLTN 3W Fanny 5Z owned and exhibited by Victor, Nova Dawn and Wyatt Oulton from Windsor N.S. Second place honors went to Loon Point Zelda 1Z shown by Mid Way Farm, Andy Carter Liecester, N.S. A total of 11 yearling heifers were in the class. Other exhibitors participating were Allen’s Herefords, Leonard & Winston, Oxford; Top of the Hill Farm ,The Siddall family, Southampton,; Willow Pond Farm, Pat & Larry Ward, Musquodobbit; Nicole Matheson, Liecester; Allison and Nicole Booth, Jolicure, N.B; and Thunderbrook Farms, the Trueman family, Amherst. Over the past 25 years the award has gone to at least 12 different exhibitors entering over 235 Hereford Yearlings and have been viewed by 22 different judges. It is our hope that this tradition will go on another 25 years.
