Welcome to the Triple A Angus Bull Sale on March 31, at Johnstone Auction Market, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

2018 celebrates the twenty-first anniversary of this sire source of black and red Angus. All the bulls are at Hagerty Livestock located 6.5 miles north of the Trans-Canada highway on Kalium Road near Belle Plaine. Feel free to stop by anytime for a preview.

Ultrasound Carcass Data:

The importance of carcass trait information will be increased as value based marketing and quality assurance programs become more recognized and commonplace in the beef industry. Cattle should be scanned as close as possible in age at which their progeny will likely go to slaughter. A range from 12 months to 14 months is probably optimal. Ultra Sound Measurements in a Breed Program: As with all genetic traits, ultrasound measurements should only be compared among animals of similar age and similar management. Only then is it of any measured value to use the ultrasound measurement for selection.

Back Fat

Fat measurement is important for several reasons. First fat depth influences lean meat yields; fat bulls have less lean meat in the carcass.

Secondly fat measurements give indications of a bull’s fleshing ability. Extremes in either too lean or too fat a bull are undesirable.

Moderation is key.

IMF/Marbling

This may be the most important attribute to be measured with ultrasound. This trait can convert into as much as $80 difference in a carcass from a AA to AAA grade. The values are numerical and indicate the estimate of carcass marbling if the animal was slaughtered immediately following the evaluation. The scale is as follows:

Bulls will register at least a full degree less marbling and 30% less back fat thickness than steers of the same age and feeding history. The marbling estimates are best utilized by grouping the bulls into high, medium and low marbling groups rather than to compare individuals that differ by only a few tenths of a score.

Ribeye Area Adjusted to 100 lbs Body Weight (REA in/100 lbs)

The largest ribeye area may belong to the largest bull therefore adjusting the REA to 100 pounds body weight helps determine which bulls are more muscular and which bulls are simply heavier.

Lean Meat Yield (LMY%)

This is the percentage of lean meat in a carcass. Yield grade is an economically important factor in marketing carcasses. With a high genetic potential, this trait can be an important objective in a breeding program.

Lots 4-6 These are the first bull calves for sale sired by J.D. He has an outstanding pedigree, great EPDs and was the 2015 Agribition Reserve Intermediate Bull Calf Champion. He is sired by the $400,000 bull International. His dam Werner Black Angel 1299 is owned by Bohrson and Rust, she is one of the breeds most complete donor females in the Angus industry. When we purchased J.D. from Jackson Cattle Company he was the first bull to sell from this pairing.

J.D.’s first calves were just what we were looking for. His second set of calves continue to exhibit the same tremendous length of body, depth, easy fleshing, moderate birth weight with an easy going disposition. J.D. is siring calves that will get the job done.

Here is a bull who has as neat of pedigree as you can make. This is the only chance to get progeny of 528 as she unexpectedly passed after Styl’n was born. She was the Grand Champion Heifer at the 2016 Regina Spring Steer and Heifer Show. She was going to be the cow that Kodie was going to base his whole herd around. Styl’n’s sire sired the $127,000 Silveiras Saras Dream 6521 who goes back to the famous Sandy cow family. Styl’n is extremely deep bodied and is extremely sound to the ground. He is nice fronted and will produce top notch replacements that everyone strives for. 528 was a terrific mother and had a tremendous udder.

This Motive son is super stout made and is high performing. His dam is a nicely made Jock daughter with a perfect udder. Motive needs no introduction to the industry as he is still leading the registrations in Canada.

Prestine is a ¾ brother to lot 9 and is very similar in type. He will also make for sleep easy nights as he had only a 73 lb. birth weight. His dam sold this past fall to Anderson Cattle in Swan River and they were very satisfied with their purchase. She had another strong bull calf this year. He will work well in any herd whether it is purebred or commercial.

This bull does not disappoint us as he has performed very well on test. There are not very many Pure Products around anymore so he has a bit of a different twist on paper. His Jock dam produced this bull that is as deep and soggy has any bull in our offering. Pure Product has produced numerous high sellers over the years because his progeny are meant to fit the bill and produce cattle that will perform in any setting, and we feel Prestigious will be no exception.

This was our first calf crop sired by GQ and we love them! He really works in our program.

Whether it’s a heifer or a bull calf they are appealing in the pasture and or show ring. GQ Trendy is super deep bodied and has a long spine while not sacrificing any muscle shape. He has a great look about him. His mother who is off Ransom has an ideal udder like any of our other Ransom daughters. She is super deep bodied and held her condition extremely well for Trendy being her first calf.

Bank Note took the world by storm this past year and 7044E is an example of the reason why. He combines the natural look to produce eye appealing cattle and muscle to pack on the pounds of the steer calves so he is the best of both worlds. His mama Ruby, is a no miss cow that stamps our calves each year and are always at the top of the pen. A few years ago at Showdown and at Agribition Junior Supreme she produced the Reserve Champion Bred Heifer in bred and owned. This Banknote son is super sweet made up through the front end while carrying all the natural muscling while still being super sound.

When we were looking for a new bull a few years ago the South Dakota progeny intrigued us. We purchased this bull’s sire from Mohnen Angus. Black Gold is the youngest bull in our offering but he definitely hasn’t disappointed us as he carries a good weight per day of age as well as good conformation. His dam 373A is becoming one of our top cows as she produces top calves each year.

Last year our show bull Power Up made a lot of friends in the barn as he has a perfect foot & leg under him. We are proud to say his feet have NEVER been trimmed! Many people said he was one of the soundest bulls in the barn. 7013E takes after his sire and exhibits many of the same traits as he does. This dark cherry red bull is super smooth and deep made and will be easy to find in the pen. Calving ease with a punch. Anderson Cattle Co and Triple H used him on heifers and have not had to assist them. We have used him on cows. A few years ago Shane Michelson called us up saying he found a bull that we needed to own.

From Spring Creek we purchased Detour and when we got him home he was impressive.

His calves are super big boned with a good foot underneath of them just like their sire. His calves come out small and grow like crazy from there. Bypass is a very high-performing bull that is very good in terms of being super deep made while still having a nice smooth shoulder for sleep easy nights. We bought his dam from Kuntz Farms in their reduction sale and her calves have been great each year.

We’ve had great calving success using Fortitude genetics on our heifers and second calvers.

This guy should follow in those same footsteps. His dam is a maternal sister to our senior herd sire “Big Split.”

Lot 64 -72 This group of bulls are all sired by our senior herd sire Willowview Big Split 19A. He is the “complete package” kind of bull that you wish would never grow old.

The dams range from first calvers to seasoned dependable cows. They have all done a fantastic job in raising these guys. Lot 65, 67, 70 and 71 came in to Hagerty’s weighing between 750-800 lbs. Lot 64 ,66, 68 and 69 were between 806-840 lbs. Lot 72 came in at 928 lbs. They did not receive any creep feed, just mom. This groups 365 average daily gain ranged from 3.09-4.64. Lot 69 and 71 topped that chart.

A big fella right from birth that has never quit growing. Our first round of Renown calves and not quite what we were expecting. Calved easy and has grown out to be the heaviest Angus bull we have ever produced with an actual Sept. 9 weaning weight of 1045 lbs! He has continued to do well on test and is very well put together for a larger frame bull. If I were to pick one of our own bulls to use on our own heifers, this would be the one. A slam dunk calving ease bull that will still deliver some nice performance on first calf heifers. A great set of EPD’s with matching calving ease genetics on both the top and bottom side of his pedigree. We are into our second set of Mohnen Impressive calves and intend on using him again this year. This bull is bred for the heifer field.

KG Solution has been our AI bull two years in row now on first calf heifers and we’ve liked the calves so much we have actually used him on some cows now as well. Great calving ease and tremendous performance which is a hard combination to find. This fellow will be moderate framed and will work well on heifers or cows. Not sure where all the birth weight came from on this one but another Solution son out of a heavy milking Double Vision cow who will probably end up in a cow program but will be a calving ease dream. Most of our females have at least two generations of maternal and calving ease AI genetics in their pedigrees and we often sell 90 lb. plus birth weight bulls into heifer breeding programs as buyers know our program. A bit more performance and frame size here as well which will make him work on cows or heifers.

We were one of the first breeders to use Fortitude and picked him as an outcross calving ease sire from Genex. Our first set of bulls were very popular at the 2016 AAA sale with a high seller going to Doug Mackie in Chaplin and two others to Ken Harle and Reese Klindt. Those three bulls averaged just over $10,000 for us and we have subsequently continued to use him every year and he has been a very steady performer. This one is out of a very small framed cow who just gave us a nice 60 lb. Solution heifer calf the other night and will be one of those cows who weans a calf almost as big as herself every year. Another calving ease dream and one we would highly recommend for a heifer breeding program.

Another throwback on birth weight given the calving ease pedigree he has but it is what it is.

A few years ago we had chosen Mohnen Long Distance for our heifer breeding program and were delighted with his performance. With Connealy Thunder and Rainmaker on the bottom side, this fellow’s dam is bred to death for maternal traits and calving ease. A nice moderate framed bull who should be easy fleshing and will have lots of longevity. Will work on heifers but probably better suited to the cow field.

An in dam purchase from Midnight Fire, this fellow has been a herd favorite since he was born. We did not use Final Answer as heavily as some breeders did in the earlier years but wish we had. The dam is a nice moderate framed cow with strong Belvin pedigree which the Friesen’s have used heavily in their program. Freightliner was a cow maker and this fellow is mated to another well known maternal line from ABS – HA Image Maker. The first son out of our Wilbar Foundation 771C herdsire that we have brought to the AAA sale. A younger bull out of a smaller framed Bismarck cow which will work very well on heifers.

He will stay very moderate framed and should work as a heifer bull for several seasons.

The Foundation genetics also offer some very strong feet and leg structure plus some nice performance which reflect in his EPD’s. The Bismarck dam is an ET daughter out of one of Megan’s favorite cows and has a beautiful udder, lots of depth of rib and lots of hair. Another heifer bull prospect here.

Certificate of Registration...

Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Angus Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.

Each animal becomes the purchaser’s risk immediately after the animal is sold. All animals in this sale will be sold under the terms and guarantees set forth by the Canadian Angus Association with regard to health, freedom from defects and from both reproductive and specific genetic unsoundness.
