Junior Angus Stockman of the Year Nominations due April 15 The Junior Angus Stockman of the Year award recognizes outstanding young cattlemen who are constantly growing their capacity by actively working with their Angus cattle, promoting their operation and cattle to the public, growing their knowledge of nutrition, genetics and breeding, and producing/selling quality Angus cattle. Five finalists will be selected from the nominations and will each receive $250. The winner will receive a $5,000 bursary to be used for genetics, cattle supplies/equipment, and/or training, along with travel assistance to attend Showdown.

Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Nominations due April 15 The Outstanding Young Angus Breeder award was developed to recognize an Angus breeder between the ages of 22 and 30 who has demonstrated a desire to stay involved in the Angus business based on their involvement within the breed up to this point in his/her career. The winner will receive $5,000.

Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Applications due April 30 The Junior Ambassador acts as a role model for youth and represents members of the Canadian Angus Association. It is an opportunity to network with leaders in the agriculture industry and learn from them. Five finalists are selected from the applications and they each receive a $1,000 scholarship and a finalist buckle as well as assistance to attend Convention where they will compete for the Ambassador title. Ambassadors have the opportunity to attend at least one international event and various major agricultural events in Canada.

GOAL Travel Bursaries | Deadline: January 1 Bursaries of up to $750 will be awarded to 12 deserving CJA members from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help offset travel and registration costs for attending the GOAL Conference.

U.S. Exchange Program | Deadline: May 10 Canadian Junior Angus members have the opportunity to attend the Junior Red Angus Round-Up and the National Junior Angus LEAD Conference each summer, and in return members of the JRA and NJAA attend Showdown or GOAL. Showdown Travel & Trucking Bursaries Deadline: May 25 & June 1 Bursaries of up to $750 will be awarded to six deserving CJA members from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help offset travel costs for attending Showdown. Trucking assistance is also available for those who travel over 1,000 km one way.

Connecting Food and Farm Bursary The Connecting Food and Farm Travel Bursary was developed to encourage urban or non-livestock youth to attend one of our events with a current member to learn about the industry. Examples of events may include but are not limited to GOAL Conference, the Canadian Angus National Convention or livestock shows.

Self-Directed National or International Travel Bursaries The Self-Directed National or International Travel Bursaries were developed to assist young Angus breeders with financial travel assistance for conferences or events related to the beef cattle industry. For members aged 18–30.

After a record setting 2023 in every commercial sale barn in the nation, the question arises… what’s next?

Over the past half decade or so, The Real World has reported the contraction of the North American beef cow herd. Another three and a half percent decline in cow herd numbers and this contraction will continue.

Drought and its consequences, lagging feed supplies, increases of heifers on feed or slaughter all point to even higher prices for 2024. Feedlots will have to pay more for their stockers as kill numbers will put pressure on the processing sector. There are even signs of global shortage. This cow/calf contraction is at a 60-year low and has not bottomed out, we can look forward to strong prices for the next 5 to 7 years.

Yes, we will go higher!

For the next three months, your mailbox will be stuffed full of sale catalogues, and we will experience another spring bull season. For the cow/calf producer, it is one of the most important times of the year in decision making as the herd bulls selected represent half of the calf crop in over a year or so. This fall we witnessed a high-priced demand for heavier stockers to shorten their stay in the feedlot.

In the next half decade or more, to rebuild our contracted cow herd, Angus will play a dominant roll in the bull market. The most popular females in the beef industry are Angus or Angus cross. The Angus and Angus influenced females are known as the queens of the pasture for their superior mothering,

hardiness, udder quality and fertility. The maternal side of Angus genetics will be highly sought after to rebuild the North American cow herd. The other trait that will be high on the priority list in the next few years will be calving ease. Angus bulls are the #1 choice when it comes to breeding heifers and you can’t expand a cow herd without retaining heifers.

Your replacement pasture represents the future of your herd. Selection of your heifer bulls must combine phenotype as they must have a degree of eye appeal, an acceptable true and accurate birth weight and quality expected progeny differences (EPD). Selection of the right Angus bulls will give you calving ease and adequate growth combined with high maternal that will allow you to retain even more replacements out of your first calf heifers.

So, what about performance? In the huge Angus gene pool, there are many, many bulls that will give you multiple choices combining a high degree performance sire with calving ease and the daughters will be stronger producing females that will add calving ease into the cow herd.

Verified Angus The Canadian Angus Association launched the Verified Angus program at the first annual Verified Angus Barbecue Competition in August 2023 in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Angus Tour.

Verified Angus provides third-party verification for cattle that are a minimum of 50 percent Angus genetics, providing access to genetics-based branded Angus beef programs and marketing opportunities for Canadian Angus genetics. Verified Angus is an extension of the Canadian Angus tag program and aims to provide verification of Angus genetics regardless of the RFID tag used.

The Canadian Angus Association developed the Verified Angus program because we believe that ranchers deserve recognition for

the cattle they raise and the beef product they produce, and we know that cattle buyers and Canadian Angus beef consumers want to know what they are buying.

In addition to label and attribute verification, producers enrolled in the Verified Angus Program will have access to the new AngusCONNECT marketplace. Verified Angus cattle can be listed for sale and marketed through this platform. AngusCONNECT helps take the guesswork out of cattle buying and supports buying with confidence.

Through our new marketing platform, buyers will be connected to the sellers they want, and sellers will be connected to the buyers they need. Commercial producers who invest in registered Angus genetics can use AngusCONNECT to market their feeder calves and replacement females for sale.

Verified Angus requirements for producers who raise Angus and Angusinfluence cattle: • Purchase Canadian Angus RFID tags through the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) for automatic enrollment OR submit the Verified Angus Program enrollment form available on the CAA website.

• Animals must have a minimum of 50 percent Angus genetics; thus at least one of the parents must be registered in the CAA herdbook.

• Registered animals must be transferred to your ownership for verification. Calves’ genetics will be verified through the registered sire or dam used.

• Additional verification recognition is available for Best Management Practices including vaccination protocol.

Worksheets to Improve your Efficiency Your Canadian Angus Association team have made changes to help members who use Excel spreadsheets to record calving, breeding, and performance information submit their information more easily. As long as you use the CAA Excel spreadsheet template, you can submit calf records and application for registration, weaning weights, yearling traits, mature cow traits, and female exposure and disposal information in spreadsheet format.

The Excel spreadsheet templates can be found on the Canadian Angus Association website under Forms and Worksheets. They can also be requested by emailing us at registry@cdnangus.ca.

Calf records and application for registration information, performance trait information, and breeding information submitted using Excel spreadsheets will only be accepted

Herd Inventory Application for Registration

The registration spreadsheet template has specific columns for all the calf information required including dam identification, sire identification, and calf information. The template also allows members to record cow teat score and udder score, request parentage verification or an Angus GS test for the calf, and record an RFID tag and Allflex TSU number for the calf.

Weaning Weights

Weaning weights must be measured using a scale and recorded in pounds. The acceptable age range for weaning weights is 120–280 days, and it is recommended that members weigh their calves when the majority of calves are as close to 205 days as possible. Calves that were managed in the same way and given the same opportunity to develop weaning weight should be placed into the same management group. The weaning weight spreadsheet template makes it easy to record and submit weaning weights. Calves can be identified using the CAA registration number or tattoo. If weaning weights are submitted using calf tattoo information, then the complete tattoo, in the correct format, must be provided.

Mature Cow Traits

Mature cow traits include mature cow weight, height, body condition score, docility, foot angle score and claw set score. Mature cow traits should all be measured on the same date, and within +/- 45 days of weighing calves.

Female Exposure and Disposal

An Excel spreadsheet template is also available for the submission of Female Exposure and Disposal data. Please be sure to provide the full cow tattoo or registration number. Detailed instructions are available on the spreadsheet template.

Yearling Traits

Yearling traits include yearling weight, scrotal circumference, hip height, foot angle score, claw set score, and yearling docility. The acceptable age range for yearling traits is 320–440 days of age.

Animals should be weighed when most of the group is as close to 365 days of age as possible. All traits should be measured on the same date. Calves that were managed in the same manner and had the same opportunity to develop yearling weight should be placed in the same management group. Yearling trait information can be submitted using the Yearling Trait spreadsheet template.

SCROTAL MEASUREMENTS AND OTHER SEMEN TESTING TIPS

Semen testing of the yearling bulls is just around the corner and herd sires comes later. When purchasing a bull or selling purebred bulls always make sure a semen evaluation accompanies him. Producers should always ask for a semen evaluation.

Look at it thoroughly and make sure the pass box is ticked off. Then look for the specifics and the scrotal size if within normal parameters and is what you want.

Back in 2013 - already ten years ago - the scrotal circumference minimums for age were changed just slightly - some not at all. The minimums are there for a very good reason, as almost every time if you semen test a bull even one cm below the minimum, he likely would not pass based on semen quality.

All purebred producers should have a scrotal tape and use it at culling or selection time on the young bulls. It gets you familiar with how to use it. I highly recommend the “reliabull” scrotal tape which has been the main one used in Canada because of the spring mechanism that keeps everybody consistent. Consistency between producers and veterinarians is what we all strive for. If done right, there never should be more than a one cm discrepancy, in my opinion. That is whether producer or veterinarian is doing it. You are then not surprised if one is a little short on scrotal size when your herd veterinarian semen tests them because you have also measured them. Producers and veterinarians can overall be very consistent this way. Measuring the widest part of the scrotum and pulling compressing scrotal skin till you see the red part of the plunger - this means stop and read it right then.

Your bulls can be measured at a younger age than a year, but keep in mind your cut off for scrotal size will be a lot lower. I have seen an adjusted amount of .04 cm day as an average predicted growth rate so just over 1 cm a month. You are trying to eliminate the real small ones and you may find badly misshapen or not fully descended testicles - these are obvious culls as well. If measuring say 10-month-old Simmental bulls, I may use a minimum of 33 (yearling minimum) -2 = 31 cm as say a minimum. They are then removed early at a younger age before effort has been put into promoting, picturing, clipping, videoing, etc. Then even the castration will be easier on them and less risky. Go by the beef code and use the appropriate pain killers. You don’t have your veterinarian trying to semen test an inferior bull. This is why as veterinarians the initial pass rate on yearling bulls will be considerably higher of course on the pre-selected candidates.

You want to semen test only bull calves older than a year of age and preferably the closer to fifteen months the better, because under a year, they are just not ready. If in an early sale I would measure and palpate their reproductive organs but would say ‘too young to test and refer until a later date’. It is phenomenal to me how quick breeders have increased scrotal size by selection. Scrotal size is moderately heritable so that has been accomplished generally in short order. I have always said

on mature bulls anything above 39 cm is just bragging rights. In studies they have found bigger bulls do not on average produce any more semen. My other worry if we breed big testicled genetics to big testicles genetics, they can get too big. Bigger is not always better in the testicle world. Other veterinarians will vouch for me when we see yearlings being an abnormal amount above breed average - it may be cause for concern. The semen test will be the final reckoning but I have definitely seen abnormally big-testicled bulls fail.

I have heard in many breeds say the testicles are not big but they are longer. There is differences in shape between bulls but the scrotal circumference is easy to do, reliable, and puts everyone on the same page. Again, if looking at U.S. bulls or selling into that market remember the U.S. veterinarians just pull the tape snug and so their scrotal circumferences are going to be inflated 2 cm to Canadian readings.

Semen testing on the yearling bulls; besides semen quality and scrotal size, we are looking for other oddball things such as warts, frenulum’s, hair rings, cuts, preputial infections and seminal vesiculitis being the main ones. Fortunately, if found, many of these things can be corrected right at the time of the semen test. If you happen to see a yearling bull with a big wart on his penis, have that attended to ahead of time. The semen test will then be the recheck, as all the conditions mentioned above will almost always be rechecked by the veterinarian to make sure healing has fully occurred and no other issues have developed.

If you can’t get semen on an apparently normal bull using a bigger probe with more contact, the veterinarian can tip the probe or get a weighed probe. Massaging is the other thing that may be tried depending on how the bull is responding. We want to give every opportunity to collect good quality semen if it is there to evaluate. In extreme cases I have had a refractory bull to the ejaculator breed a cull cow and pull the semen and vaginal mucus out and evaluate that way. In this case you can even watch his ability to breed at the same time. As breeders, it is always best to ask purchasers to try and watch at least one mating to make sure young bulls have the desire and physical ability to breed. This is what we can’t check, and sometimes they need more time and patience, and other times they never do and need to be culled.

Building the Legacy has become the Canadian Angus Foundation’s main fundraiser focus and is a main source for generating resources to further our mission. Please join us.

The Canadian Angus Foundation was incorporated in 1993 and is the charitable arm of the Canadian Angus Association.

The vision of Building the Legacy is to allow the Foundation to build monetary resources. The Foundation uses its funds to provide opportunities for our youth, young breeders and membership to grow in the areas of leadership, marketing, networking, animal husbandry, genetic improvement and to learn about developing tools to enhance Angus production. The vision also includes the importance of preserving Angus history. By fostering these areas we can ensure our Angus history is not lost and will keep Angus as the breed of choice for the commercial beef sector and end users for years to come.

Five finalists will be selected from the nominations and will each receive $250. Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Nominations due April 15 The Outstanding Young Angus Breeder award was developed to recognize an Angus breeder between the ages of 22 and 30 who has demonstrated a desire to stay involved in the Angus business based on their involvement within the breed up to this point in his/her career. Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Applications due April 30 The Junior Ambassador acts as a role model for youth and represents members of the Canadian Angus Association. It is an opportunity to network with leaders in the agriculture industry and learn from them. Five finalists are selected from the applications and they each receive a $1,000 scholarship and a finalist buckle as well as assistance to attend Convention where they will compete for the Ambassador title. Ambassadors have the opportunity to attend at least one international event and various major agricultural events in Canada.

Connecting Food and Farm Bursary The Connecting Food and Farm Travel Bursary was developed to encourage urban or non-livestock youth to attend one of our events with a current member to learn about the industry. Over the last 150 years, the popularity of Angus cattle has grown, making over 70% of America’s cowherd influenced by Angus genetics. Influential sires have made their mark and during the 2023 American Angus Association® Awards Dinner and Reception on November 5 in Orlando, Florida, the Association recognized the sire registering the most progeny.

Deer Valley Growth Fund owned by Deer Valley Farm, Fayetteville, Tenn., sired 5,006 calves registered into the Angus herd book, the most in fiscal year 2023.

Jonathan Perry, general manager of Deer Valley Farm, was honored to accept the award. “We have loved seeing the success Angus breeders have had with Growth Fund.”
