In This

12 An old timer once told me, “Never say whoa when you’re in a hole, because your efforts will affect you and those around you.” We, in agriculture, are essential to the people of the world. I do not want to take away the accolades and thanks to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers in these times, but food is essential for healing. Throughout this turmoil our company has run full bore; from empty sale barn auctions during the spring season to summer pastures, getting ready for an exciting fall season. Our purpose has not changed… we need to feed the people! During my summer tours, I have seen fabulous crops and an abundance of forage, which will surely reduce input costs in the cow herd. An impending bumper crop will ease feed grain prices, although some Alberta areas have been pummeled with rain and hail. Lush pastures should put an extra measure of pounds at weaning which should add an extra premium into your Levi’s … providing you are using quality sires.

Yes, consumers are learning the values of beef for both nutritional and taste qualities.

72

With the closure and now partial closure of restaurants, one would surmise that we have a glut of product, but there is no indication of that in the marketplace, which tells me that cow herd inventories are low. This scenario is not of one that happens over night as it takes years for inventories to grow. Thus, opportunities become readily available for those who choose to “Never say whoa.”

Although this editorial is designed for our commercial sector, I must touch on the purebred component of the industry. In less than five months, purebred producers will be having bull sales. Shorty had learned very early in his life that he could learn more listening than he could talking. He had been introduced to a lot of characters through his father’s stories and one of them was Frank.

Frank was by his own definition, a cattle buyer. He was in fact, a wheeler dealer that would buy, sell and trade nearly anything if he thought there was a buck to be made. Shorty had met him in person several times over the years and found that Frank was like mouse turds... he was everywhere. So, Shorty was hardly surprised to see Frank’s old pick up on the side of a seldom travelled back road. The truck was one of a kind. Nearly every body part was a different colour and several of those body parts were damaged. The box of the truck was enclosed by plywood racks on all four sides and on this day covered with a blue plastic tarp.

Frank was standing at the rear driver’s side staring at the approaching truck. Frank was older by then; Shorty wasn’t sure how old but figured he had to be in his seventies. He was always disheveled looking, on this day he was not only sloppy but appeared to be sweating profusely. As Shorty slowed and Frank was able to identify Shorty as the driver, Frank’s demeanor changed. “Shorty! Am I glad to see you. Have you got a jack in that rig? I gotta flat tire and my jack is under my load of barley.” Shorty had climbed out of his truck and walked to the rear of Frank’s truck. The rear passenger tire was flat.

“I just picked up a load of barley at Keith Jamison’s place. I must have picked up a nail from that old granary around the corner.” “Well Frank, I don’t trust these jack-alls, we can try it. If it doesn’t work, we can run up to Jamison’s and get a proper jack from him.” Frank stopped and turned to Shorty. He stared intently into Shorty’s eyes, like Shorty was a kid that wasn’t listening. “Shorty... you don’t understand. I just PICKED UP this barley at Jamison’s.” Frank nodded slowly at Shorty as if Shorty should read between the lines. “Oh, gotcha Frank.” The two men worked quickly to change the tire. Frank placed the flat tire in the cab on the passenger seat, while Shorty secured the lug nuts and set the truck down. “Thanks Shorty... really appreciate the help!” The old truck roared to life and Frank was off in a cloud of dust, the speed of which would make a race car pit crew proud. Shorty continued on his way. He knew from experience that Frank treated people as they treated him, he just wondered what Jamison had ever done to Frank. It was nearly a year since the flat tire incident. Shorty was rolling into the stock yards in the early evening with a load of cull cows. There, beside the loading chute was Frank’s truck. Shorty wheeled into position and unloaded the cows into an alley. Frank was standing to one side, watching the cows walk by.

rocedures to newborn calves have undergone several changes over the last few years. There are more changes coming I am sure in the not too distant future. These will all help the survivability of the calf. Preventing or significantly reducing neonatal diseases not only decreases mortality but the overall production in the herd improves. This article may give you further ideas on what your calves need or don’t need on entry into the world. They are easy to handle at this young an age and because of their size dosage is very much reduced when it comes to things like antibiotics or painkillers. When pairing up or moving the newborn and its mother this is commonly a great opportunity to get management procedures done. For most operations that involves calves newborn to three days of age. From times past the RFID tag and a dangle tag are given. Some reference can be given to the cow’s number on the calf’s tag to facilitate pairing up. Others tag the calf with the same number as the cow and give them their unique number when they enter the herd. Vitamin AD & Se Vit E are still given as injectables to many calves but with advancements there are oral products out there that contain those vitamins minerals and other things that helps a calves survivability and growth. feed quality and with drought conditions in many parts of the country that could change regionally. The retained placenta incidence is often a good telltale sign of nutrition status. If regular born single calves you are still having retained placentas get the nutrition checked. The more needles we give the more pain we also create and getting intramuscular shots into the thin muscle bellies of the calf does create trauma. Some selenium products are indicated subcutaneous however so seek them out. Intranasal vaccines have more taken the place of parenteral vaccines in very young calves. They are easy to give the calves painless and promote local protection in the airways against respiratory pathogens. Especially if you get cases of pneumonia in your new calves in the first few months vaccines at a very young age may eliminate some of these cases. For many producers pneumonia has become their major cause of death or poor doers in the herd. There is “Once PMH IN” for the main bacterial cause of pneumonia and “Inforce” for the main viral causes of pneumonia. Now there is a new product out this year called Nasalgen 3 PMH which is essentially the previous two products combined. Giving the calf protection for both the viral and bacterial pathogens. Some producers give at birth others up to a few weeks of age. Talk to your herd veterinarian if you have respiratory issues and want to ramp up your vaccination program. Fewer sick calves

There is a ton of optimism in our agricultural sector as we move forward into 2022. Although the start of the new year has brought badly needed snow fall throughout the western prairies along with freezing rain and high wind chill values, we have already had more snowfall this winter than we have seen in several years. This bodes well for all grasslands and dugouts… any type of moisture is good moisture. Wind chill is a common factor we deal with, and it sure eliminates any conferences or meetings by climatologists and environmentalists in Saskatoon in January. We can be thankful that Canadian bred Angus have a great under coat of hair and that their owners are a rare breed.

commodity charts, a “bull flag” is developing for the markets to rise sharply. The cattle market has strengthened significantly over levels seen in the fall of 2021… with the forecast for next fall strong… maybe as strong as we have ever seen. Experts predict that the calf crop born in 2022 will be the smallest in North America in several decades. It will take a long time to rebuild the depleted cow herd, and some feel the cattle market will take until 2025 before inventories replenish enough to level off markets.

Optimistic… in the beef cattle industry, we can be extremely optimistic of where we are and where we are going. When you look at the weekly and monthly

contributors to this issue are breed leaders dedicated to improving your bottom line. Don’t hesitate to give them a call to discuss their bull offering for the spring.

Bring on the Angus cow… “Queen of the Pasture.” We all know the dominance and maternal strength of these breeding females, whether it be fertility, milk, udder type, Our governments and experts continue to fuel the soundness, rustling or mother ability… others cannot press with scare tactics. The pandemics of the past two compete…often copied but never duplicated. As bull years have painted the headlines with doom and gloom sale season is upon us, it is time to update your herd and now are hinting of food shortages. Right and Wrongs Shorty had learned very early in his life that he could learn more listening than he could talking. “I got a jack-all I think Frank. We can give it a try. What the hell are you doing out here?”

“Evenin’ Shorty.” 72 2022-02-01 4:21:28 PM

“Hi Frank, how are things?” “Pretty good.” Frank was watching the cows walk down the alley and into a pen. “Are those cows pregnant Shorty?” “Nope. They are all empty Frank.” “Hmm. Too bad.” Frank turned and left the yards heading for his truck. Shorty handed his paperwork to the yard man. “I got one more load Fred, but it’ll be a couple hours before I get back.” The yard man turned towards the cows that Shorty had just dropped off. “I ain’t gonna be here, just stick ‘em in with the rest of yours. They are in A 14, put the paperwork in the can.” “You bet Fred. I’ll see you in the morning.” Shorty walked to his trailer, closed the door, and started towards the truck. There, standing by the driver’s door stood Frank. “Hey Shorty, you know how to preg check right?” “Yeah?” Shorty was standing next to Frank now. “Why?” Frank was staring into the stock yards. “There are a lot of cull cows in the yards for the sale tomorrow, I bet some of them are pregnant. You got one more load, right?”

preg checked them and the pregnant ones had the bottom of their switch squared off with a quick snip of Frank’s scissors. The empty cows went unmarked. The next day Frank sat in at the sale and bought a bunch of cull cows with neatly coiffed tails for cull cow prices. A couple months later Frank waved Shorty down while Shorty and his wife were grocery shopping. “Got time for a coffee, Shorty?” “Sure Frank. Cathy doesn’t need my help.” The two men went to a nearby café and shared some small talk and a coffee. When the time came, Frank opened his wallet. Shorty had never seen so much cash stuffed into a leather wallet. Frank peeled off five one hundred bills onto the table and shoved them towards Shorty. “What that for Frank? We didn’t spend that much in here! Besides I thought you were buying.” “I am buying Shorty. I did okay on those cows we checked last fall, you earned this.” Frank had gotten up from the table and was walking away. Shorty scooped up the cash and followed the old man outside. “Frank I can’t take this; I didn’t do nothin.’”

“So, you’ll be back here about 10? What if you and me did a little preg checking on a couple pens?”

Frank stopped and turned to Shorty. “Shorty, I don’t like owing anybody anything and I don’t much like people that owe me. So, let’s just remain friends.” Frank was grinning a mostly toothless grin and he extended his hand towards Shorty.

Shorty knew that question was more of suggestion. He also knew that Frank already knew the answer.

“Thanks Frank. You didn’t have to...” Shorty shook his hand.

“If you bring the sleeves and are here at 10 with everything ready to go Frank...and I am only doing a couple of pens.”

Frank grinned and turned towards his truck. Shorty watched him shuffle to the truck, get in and drive away. He couldn’t help but wonder what the hell Keith Jamison had done to Frank, but he was glad to be on the right side of the ledger.

“Yeah.”

Shorty arrived back at the yards about 9:45 that night. Frank’s truck was parked at the loading chute, he was standing at the gate to A 14 and there were cows in the chute.

Shorty smiled to himself... like Frank ever had a ledger!

Frank ran a few dozen cows through the chute, Shorty Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.” Today’s Angus Advantag e

Canadian Angus Tags

The Tag with Benefits Angus-branded programs across Canada need and want to verify that what they are selling as Angus is indeed Angus. One way to prove that is by procuring cattle that are tagged Canadian Angus.

Tagging your animals with Canadian Angus tags has its benefits: •

Sell direct or through one of the 169 Canadian Angus Feeder Sales across Canada.

•

Canadian Angus tags visually and electronically identify Angus and Angus cross cattle. It’s our guarantee that the animal bearing the tag has a minimum of 50% Angus genetics.

•

CCIA compliant indicator—no other RFID indicator is required for national identification.

•

There are a number of branded beef programs in Canada that are unable to find enough verified Angus cattle to satisfy their program demands. The only way to verify? With our Canadian Angus tag!

•

Many Angus branded programs require Angus verification for qualification into their programs. Maximize your marketing opportunities by using Canadian Angus tags.

“

As more and more global markets demand the Angus brand, sourcing cattle to meet our brand specs becomes of increasing importance and value. The assurance that the CAA tag provides knowing purchased cattle will qualify for our Angus brands takes the guesswork out of the equation and adds value into the cattle we acquire. Nicolas Ednie Bouvry Exports Canada

“

“

By being part of the CAA tag program and working with the CAA, Authentic Angus was able to be the first Canadian beef brand in Europe to feature the Rancher Endorsed logo. Using the logo and having the backing of the CAA has given us additional credibility in the market and allowed us to simplify the process for making our Angus beef label claim. David Saretsky Authentic Angus

Ordering your Canadian Angus RFID indicators has never been so easy:

“

Please order directly from CCIA online at www.canadaid.ca or call 1-877-909-2333 CCIA carries both the Datamars brand Temple Tag ComfortEar Canadian Angus RFID indicator as well as the Allflex brand Canadian Angus RFID indicator.

Canadian Angus tagged animals are in high demand by Canadian Angus beef programs. Order your Canadian Angus management tags directly through the Canadian Angus Association. Order online www.cdnangus.ca/adding-value/ordering-caa-management-tags or call 1-888-571-3580.

BMO Farm Family of 2021! The Mcrae family of Mar Mac Farms! Mar Mac Farms was established in 1956 by Blair’s parents, Allan and Marg McRae. The McRae family has been farming in the south Brandon district since 1885. Brett and Melissa are the 5th generation on the McRae farm. Lois’s family ( the Gordon’s from Souris) were also very involved in Agriculture. Brett and Melissa are the 5th generation of longtime registered cattle producers in the Shorthorn, Angus, Hereford, and Simmental breeds. The Gordon family have exhibited steers, bulls, and junior heifers at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair since 1946.

Type of Farming Operation:

Mar Mac Farms is a diverse farming operation, producing numerous crops, along with 200 purebred Red and Black Angus and Simmental cattle.

Family Participation:

Mar Mac Farms is operated by Blair, Lois, Brett and Chantel, and Melissa McRae, just south of Brandon, Manitoba.

Land Stewardship:

In their livestock enterprise, the McRaes believe in preventative health measures for herd health and practice rotational grazing to extend summer grazing and to conserve moisture. They stay on top of current health protocols and are the first purebred breeders in Manitoba certified to have an Express Verified Bull Sale in 2021. As Verified Beef Plus members and Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef members, they are working to produce a top-quality beef product for consumers. Brett and Chantel use regenerative farm principles in their grain operation, keeping a living root for as long as possible, and poly cropping.

Simmental Association. Blair has served on the Roseland South Brandon Community Board. Lois was a founding member and treasurer of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. She was a director for the Manitoba Angus Association for 12 years, nominated to serve as President in 2004 and 2005. Lois represented Manitoba for six years on the board of directors of the Canadian Angus Association. She has been Manitoba Angus Association Newsletter co-editor since 2007 and has volunteered her time to serve on the Roseland South Brandon.

Community Club:

Brett has served on the Manitoba and Canadian Junior Angus Association as National Director and president of the Manitoba Junior Association. He served as the second president of the Canadian Young Cattleman’s Council for 2017 and 2018. He represented CYCC in joint policy committee meetings with the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association held in Ottawa. Currently, Brett enjoys speaking at events like the Western Canadian Soil Health and Grazing Convention in Edmonton in 2019. He has been a director of the Roseland South Brandon Community Club. Melissa served as secretary of the Manitoba Young Canadian Simmental Association and held many offices during her term as a board member of the Manitoba Junior Angus Association. She is currently President of the Manitoba Simmental Association and Secretary for the Roseland South Brandon Community Club. The whole family has been involved in 4-H, and Blair and Lois initiated Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup.

Awards and Highlights:

In 2020, Mar Mac Farms was awarded the Simmental A.O. Henuset Award for their volunteer Community Involvement: Blair was a founding member of the Young Canadian and promotion work with the Simmental breed in Manitoba. In 2018, Mar Mac Farms was selected Simmental Association. He served as a director the Canadian Red Promotion Society Breeders of of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba and on the Year. In 2007, Mar Mac Farms was the Manitoba the fundraising committee for the Canada Room Expansion at the Keystone Centre. Invitation for Male Fertility Project

Dear Canadian Angus Member, Your Association is pleased to partner with the American Angus Association and Kansas State University on a project to study male fertility. We know that fertility is the primary factor impacting operation profitability and sustainability. Bulls contribute to overall reproductive success (and profitability) of an operation to a large degree and a substantial opportunity exists to improve male fertility. A large amount of beef bull fertility data already exists in the beef industry. The objective of this project is to study this information to better understand the genetics of male fertility. We are inviting members to submit their semen test information for use in this project. We have a spreadsheet that can be completed by you or your vet. Please include complete group information for all bulls tested (those who passed and those who did not). As with all research projects, producer information and animal identification will be masked. The research team, based at Kansas State University and the University of Wisconsin, includes both reproductive biologists and geneticists. This is a 5-year project, funded by the USDA aimed to study the genetics of male fertility. For more information or to submit your semen test data for use towards this project, please contact Canadian Angus Association Director of Science and Technology, Kajal Devani at kdevani@cdnangus.ca or at 403-537-5604.

Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name. Vaccines are a priceless tool for modern livestock production. They are as important to the economic viability of a cattle operation as pesticides are for crop production. Rabies, Blackleg, IBR (Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis), BVD (Bovine Viral Diarrhea), anthrax, bacterial and viral respiratory infections, and numerous other diseases are prevented or lessened in severity because of vaccines. Over the last couple of decades new vaccines have been developed for calf scours, mastitis, and foot rot prevention; however, no less revolutionary has been the improvements with each generation of product targeting the same ol’ cattle diseases that have been with us for decades. Disease causing infectious agents are usually a bacterium or a virus. Germ is a commonly used word for bacteria and viruses; especially ones that cause disease. Molds (fungi) are less commonly involved unless conditions are right to allow their numbers to flourish. Ringworm is a common skin condition in cattle and other livestock caused by select species of ringworm fungi. Parasites are also infectious, but most prefer to quietly steal to survive rather than to cause overt harm. A notable exception might be the coccidia parasite responsible for the bloody diarrhea associated with coccidiosis in cattle. Several types of very small organisms (aka. microorganisms, microbes), mostly bacteria, live within our bodies and are beneficial causing no harm whatsoever. Many of these bacteria assist with digestion, help produce essential nutrients and assist the immune system in the destruction of harmful organisms. The mix of organisms, called a microbiome, residing on our skin, in our noses, in our gut and virtually any where in our bodies is unique to that system and Today’s Angus Advantag e

to the individual. A microbiome is not static. Antibiotics, foods we eat, others we come in contact with, where we live, who are parents were and numerous other factors, many of which we are just now learning about, can all influence a microbiome. Newer technology, such as PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, have proven to be much more sensitive for identifying organisms in environments that were previously believed to be sterile. Older testing methods relied on culture, which essentially meant that these organisms had to grow in a petri dish under the right conditions, or at the very least had to be detectable by testing methods that required the organism to remain intact. When an infectious agent enters a body, it will move to its preferred site where it will reproduce; provided it has entered through the right system. For example, the gut, respiratory system, or blood. Respiratory pathogens that don’t get inhaled may simply desiccate or dry out on the skin surface. An important concept for understanding disease treatment and prevention is recognizing the difference between viruses and bacteria. Both are tiny, yet viruses are smaller than even the smallest bacterium, only visible with highly specialized microscopes. Bacteria are living, singlecelled creatures with an outer protective cell wall and an inner lining protecting the cell’s organ structure. Bacteria can produce their own food and can thrive in a wide variety of environments. Bacteria tend to be opportunistic, feeding on biological debris that is present often from physical damage (cuts, wounds) or damage caused by viruses. Viruses consist of just a thin protein coat covering a small amount of RNA or DNA that represents the genetic code necessary for creating future generations.

To multiply, viruses must attach themselves to living cells taking advantage of their host’s infrastructure. Most viruses are very specific about the types of cells they prefer. For example, blood cells, cells lining the gut, or specific cells within the respiratory tract. Because they can’t reproduce on their own viruses must reprogram the cells they attach to to allow themselves to replicate. Unlike bacteria, viruses invariably behave like pirates exploiting their host cells until the cell dies or bursts. Some viruses may even turn normal cells into cancerous cells. Antibiotics target bacteria, not viruses. Antibiotics have been used to fight disease even when it is known that the cause is a virus with the belief that the antibiotics would help fight a secondary, opportunist bacterial infection, thereby lessening the severity of the disease or even saving the life of the patient. Such use of antibiotics is discouraged in most situations as it contributes to antimicrobial resistance and the development of so-called super bugs. Drugs designed to specifically target viruses seem logical but there are very few antiviral drugs available. Generally, antiviral drugs have a very limited spectrum of use. Our best defense against viruses is prevention of infection and one of our best preventative tools is vaccination.

T-lymphocytes attack infected cells in the body; however, they are capable of much more targeted attacks then macrophages. T-Lymphocytes may also produce a subclass of themselves called “memory T-cells” which will remain in the body for a period of time ready to defend against that same invader should reinfection occur. T-cells play the predominant role in what is called cell-mediated immunity. B-lymphocytes produce antibodies, also called immunoglubulins, which are large Y-shaped proteins designed to recognize specific antigens (recognizable groups of protein) on the invaders, bind to these antigens, and then interact with other components of the immune system to destroy the invader. Like T-cells, a portion of B-cells will become “memory B-cells” surviving in the body ready to make fresh antibody when the time comes. We all recognize the importance of colostrum to calves, and it is the ready-made antibodies present in colostrum that are absorbed by the calf to help it fight all sorts of infections until it is capable of making its own antibodies. All vaccines are made from taking a piece of the bacteria or virus and modifying it so it will stimulate the production of memory T- and B-lymphocytes that carry forward the ability to fight the invader in the future. Different types of vaccines work in different ways. The diversity of bacteria and viruses dictates that one type of vaccine or vaccine technology is often effective for only select group of organisms. Following vaccination it usually takes a few weeks for the body to produce enough memory cells to offer protection in case infection occurs. Fever and mild sickness are normal – it means the immune system is responding to the vaccine. In most cases, second (booster) vaccinations are required to confer an effective level of immunity with boosters required thereafter at regular intervals. Vaccine manufacturers study the response to vaccines to determine when and for how long an adequate level of protection is sustained. Historically, levels of circulating antibody were measured. Another method involves studying actual disease challenge scenarios. Scientists have recognized that antibody levels may not tell the whole story and a great deal of energy is now being focused on the role of memory cells.

When viruses invade and start to multiply this is called an infection. Left unchecked the virus will proliferate, and symptoms of illness will appear. The earliest symptoms such as fever, headache, tiredness etc. are a direct result of the body’s defense mechanism, the immune system, kicking into action. Fever is not just a sign - a higher body temperature may limit the reproductive capabilities of the invader. The body’s immune system is very complicated and consists of a few modes of defense. The first line is relatively nonspecific; designed to attack anything foreign. Blood consists of oxygen-carrying red blood cells and white blood cells, also called immune cells. There are different types of white cells all designed to fight infection in different ways. Many types of bacterial infection are associated with pus production. The most predominant white blood cell found in pus are neutrophils which can migrate from the blood vessels to site the site of infection where they surround and kill the invaders. Other, larger cells called macrophages swallow up viruses and Immunology is a very prolific field of scientific broken-down cells leaving behind recognizable parts study that has made some significant gains over the last of the invaders called antigens. B- and T- lymphocytes few decades. Many of us owe our lives and livelihoods are another closely related class of white blood cells. to the breakthroughs that have been made. Today’s Angus Advantag e

They say the only constiant is change. We know in the cattle business if we stop improving and accept the status quo we will get behind. I have decided to put together a bunch of ideas of changes that are now happening in the cattle industry. As I travel across the country and meet with producer groups and veterinarians many different production tips come to mind. Hopefully some may be applicable to your operation and help you improve the performance and efficiencies of your farming or ranching operation. Have discussions with your veterinarian, nutritionist or fellow cattle producer on whether these points may be applicable to your operation. Many of these things are being implemented by the Simmental breeders and their commercial bull customers but this is always good to review. Vaccinology is making great strides with new intranasal technologies and broader vaccines to cover more diseases in one shot. There are newer intranasal cannulas and even guns now on the market that are easy to use and really get a good application of the vaccine well up into the nostril. Before calving is an ideal time to review if new products are to be added. Remember vaccines help prevent diseases and that is far better than treating and we can hopefully cut down our antibiotic usage at the same time. We don’t want to pass off BVD persistently infected calves to the feeding sector so there is heavy reliance on the cow calf sector to wean pre-vaccinated calves. Even vaccines for footrot and pinkeye are becoming more

commonplace especially on your herd bulls. Clostridial disease is always present but remember specific diseases such as tetanus or redwater only come in certain clostridial vaccines. We see more and more cases of clostridial disease out there in spite of there being very good vaccines available that are inexpensive. Work with your veterinarian to make sure timing is right on the vaccines and handle and administer them properly. Every time you process the thought should enter your mind what vaccines do I need and is there anything new that will give my cattle more comprehensive coverage and hopefully less clinical disease. Don’t forget of a vaccine program for your herd bulls. Whether a purebred breeder or commercial operation it is really easy to neglect doing the bulls. Are cattle travelling too or coming from geographic areas where specific diseases are more prevalent. These are very important facts to know. Pain control or NSAIDs are often mentioned in the beef and dairy codes of practice for painful procedures such as castration or dehorning. Really in veterinary medicine most times we work on sick cattle and they have a fever or perform surgery one of the NSAIds may be indicated. Your veterinarian now has a wide range of these NSAIds to choose from. They even come in convenient methods of application such as orally or pour on as well as the traditional inject able ones. Some have very short slaughter withdrawals others are longer. They make the cattle keep their appetites

Today’s Angus Advantag e

106 2022-02-01 4:22:31 PM

recover quicker so in addition to being the right thing they are economically very justified in my opinion. Antibiotic usage has come down even if it simply just reduces treatment length. They are all prescription drugs but your veterinarian should be up to date on which ones to use in which situations for you. The greatest observation I have had is how quick recovery from caesarian sections; claw amputations, castrations etc are when NSAIDs are used. The public is also talking about painkillers from an animal welfare perspective so it simply is becoming the absolute right thing to do in most circumstances. With parasite control monitoring of herds with fecals for internal parasites has become commonplace and many strategies including strategic deworming at pasture is keeping producers and their veterinarians cognizant of different ways to deworm knowing that a certain level of parasites reduces production and leads to greater health problems especially n calves and yearlings. More products are available for lice and fly control and some even have some mosquito control, which additionally helps production on grass. The critical thing is timing of application and switching products if resistance by the horn flies starts to become a problem. A brand new product has come out which is for lice only but also essentially kills the eggs so no need to retreat. It may be an alternative for the ivermectin products in the fall. It does not do worms so a worm product may need to be done in conjunction. If fecal parasites are low there is no need for a dewormer. The results of the tests will tell you. Keep in mind to do the same thing for fly control monitor for levels of flies before you start treatment. When purchasing your breeding bulls (whether purebred or commercial

breeders) carefully examine besides having a real good look at the bull all the information such as semen forms, EPDs and any genetic information. They are half the genetics in your herd and warrant special attention depending if you want bulls of calving ease performance or carcass characteristics. . Many purebred breeders now prevaccinate with even footrot and the health status and vaccination history is usually indicated in the catalogue. Color dominance with testing for things like homozygosis for color or the nondilutor gene to stay away from rat-tail calves are steps certain purebred producers take. This has all been done to help the purchaser and should lead to consistency in color at least if that is important in your herd. If don’t totally understand the color heritability have a good talk with the purebred breeder. We need as an industry to do more testing and get more information on the antibiotic sensitivity so we can all make more informed decisions on antibiotic usage. If for instance you have lost some calves to pneumonia talk to your herd veterinarian about doing both a culture when he/she does a postmortem plus a sensitivity so best to predict which antibiotic will work the best. This again will help monitor what resistant organisms are out there plus success at treatment will be optimized. Keep in mind virtually all antibiotics will need a vet script and involvement from your veterinarian going forward. Talking to fellow breeders, producers, herd veterinarian, nutritionists will keep you abreast of new things in the cattle industry that may or may not have a place on your farm. Hope fall allows for some extra feed we so desperately need. Next year hopefully will be better in the rainfall department.

rocedures to newborn calves have undergone several changes over the last few years. Plus it eliminates a couple needles. Most nutritionists would agree which may save you a couple procedures. Although depending on the year

feed quality and with drought conditions in many parts of the country that could change regionally. Fewer sick calves

and less antibiotics used could be the end result. We all know a sick calf earlier in life is much lighter at weaning time. Polled bulls have all but eliminated the use of paste at birth to dehorn but if done that can be a real stress on the young calves. Although necessary one must always be cognizant with all these procedures we do recognize how stressed it may make the calf. Some producers have even gone to NSAID’s (Non-Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs) when the amount of painful procedures such as paste dehorning, castration to commercial calves and even the ear tagging creates more pain then they feel is acceptable. Pain products are available for injection, given orally or the newest a pour on formulation so lots of choice out there Tagging in most peoples herds involves the two tags with the CCIA allowing age verification. Tag retention of the CCIA tags has gotten better. There is no better time then in the first couple days of life to tag the calves. There are good breakaway taggers now available so ears are not ripped when tagging. Place the tag between the ridges in the middle of the ear. Lots are now giving the tags in opposite ears so blood supply is not compromised. Some people still use navel preparations but the vast majority do not handle the navels. Practicing good hygiene in the calving area with good colostrum consumption goes a long ways to preventing navel infections. The exception is backwards calves or caesarian calves where the navels are broken off short. They may need treatment such as flushing and some antibiotics. A few producers that cycle calves through a warm barn are more prone to navel infections. Producers then use metaphylactic antibiotics at birth. In the problem herds this can cut down the infection rate. That will be a good time to discuss whether you need antibiotics, or can hygiene

be improved in the calving area. Calves may have been prescribed an oral treatment for coccidiosis or cryptosporidiosis. Again if your veterinarian recommends it and there has been a need it may be worthwhile. With young calves being subjected to many different procedures including ringing castration it pays to have a kit to organize everything to take with you. I have seen some that hang on the fence others that are tool kits. All keep you organized and procedures are not missed. Get into a routine. Remember to only rehydrate the amount of vaccine you will administer in the next hour. Have a close look at other things the calf may need attending to from contracted tendons to small hernias to frozen ears to navel issues. I see less and less ear muffs out there and with winter being milder mothering up happening in warmer barns and cattle being brought into shelters or creep areas we keep frostbite to a minimum. A little intervention early to calves may avert a major problem down the road. Above all else try to observe a calf sucking to make sure adequate colostrum is consumed. If in any doubt or with twins or calves born weak or to poor uddered cows give a good quality colostrum replacer like headstart so you can rest easy the calf has maximum colostral protection. Lots to consider but let’s everyone have a great 2022 calving season and get the newborns off to a good start. They deserve it. Don’t be afraid to talk to fellow producers and compare notes. Some I have even heard on commercial operations giving NSAIDs like oral meloxicam if obtrusive procedures such as needles dehorning or castration are done. Some purebred producers are even ringing bull calves with too high a birthweight, bad conformation etc. This saves castration and the dangers it creates at a much older age.
