2021 Early Fall issue

In This

12 There is one thing that gets my blood pressure up quick these days and that is when the “tree huggers” start blaming cows for climate change! The whole “climate change” thing gets me too; climate has been changing since the dawn of time but that is another rant for another day! All my life we have known that the burning of fossil fuels; oil, gas, and coal has been a major polluter and cause of greenhouse gases. We know that modern industrialization is responsible for 80% of the earth’s greenhouse gases but now suddenly people with a platform in the media or social media have decided to blame most of our pollution problems on cows. When in all reality cattle produce 2% of the total greenhouse gas produced in North America. Transportation is responsible for 28.5%, electricity production is responsible for 28.4%, industry contributes 21.6%, commercial is 6.4% residential is 5.1% and agricultural crops 4.7%. These same people who blame cows for pollution say that cows are eating up food supplies that could be eaten by humans. In fact, two-thirds of all agricultural land in the world is classified as “marginal” and is not suited for crop production. This means two-thirds of all agricultural land in the world would be wasted if not for animal production. Take this one step further and you will also recognize that forage on these marginal lands captures carbon, which cows consume and only contribute a percentage of that back into

the atmosphere. There has been past research showing that before civilization the land was covered with Buffalo and wild game and that they produced nearly as much methane gas as the modern-day cow herd does, 80% as much. So how is it that cows are suddenly the cause of all our problems? Again, these people up on their high horses, are telling us to eat more plants and less meat… 50% of all fertilizer used in the world is in the form of manure… resulting from animal production. Basically 100% of all fertilizer used in the production of organic foods, which seems to be all the buzz… is manure. The rest of the fertilizer used is manufactured with huge energy consumption. 90% of what a beef cow eats is not fit for humans to consume and it comes from land not fit to produce human edible foods. Plus, cows consume all the bi-products from processing plant-based foods for humans. If it were not for cows, we would have an even bigger methane gas problem in the world from all these bi-products rotting in landfills. Food waste and rotting foods are already a problem in our landfills, one-third of all food produced in the world is wasted, (40% in the USA) of this 82% of all food wasted is non-animal: fruits, vegetables, and grain products. This is a staggering number on its own but then factor in all the energy and resources it took to produce and process that food and you have identified a much bigger problem than cow burps!

Friends in Cold Places

Shorty wasn’t big on anything social. He preferred to spend as much time as possible in the company of his dog and more recently with his wife. Outside of that he had a few acquaintances, most of whom lived close by, but his list of friends was awfully short.

Shorty had friends as a kid in school, but after he walked out of school for the last time, he hadn’t seen one of them That was a fact of life, Shorty figured, things change as we get older, people come, and people go. Then there was Jeff. Shorty had met Jeff during his 4-H time. Jeff was a quasi-country kid, he lived on a small “farm” near the coast. His parents were well off and Jeff, his older brother and younger sister were in the 4-H as well. They competed as best they could against Shorty and the ranch kids in his club. Shorty couldn’t tell you when or how he met Jeff, but before he knew it, they were friends. As they grew into adults, they kept in touch, not often but always kept in touch. Jeff was on Shorty’s mind this afternoon. He had called Shorty last week to see what was happening and after a long conversation, decided to make the trip up to have a visit. Shorty warned him that he was busy with fall round up, Jeff said he would love to help.

Shorty had made it home with a few dozen strays and was stripping the saddle from the day’s mount when Jeff arrived. They hadn’t seen each other in a while, Jeff was going a little grey around the edges. “Hey Shorty! How the hell are you?” “Jeffie! It is about time you got here...just in time to watch me quit.” “Well, I am here to help you work now. What nag do I get?” Jeff shifted his attention to the horses just outside the barn. “You sure you want to ride Jeff? It is going to be a long day and it is supposed to be chilly tomorrow.” “No problem Shorty! If an old fart like you can do it, a young stud like me is good to go.” Shorty grinned at his friend, who was exactly one year and four days younger than Shorty. “I hope you brought all your warm ski clothes there stud. You office types aren’t known for toughness, especially you wimps from the coast.” “I have brand new ski clothes Shorty. I am good to go. You done here? I am hungry.” The next morning Jeff and Shorty walked their horses out of the barn and into the darkness. Jeff looked like the Michelin man, a ski toque, heavy down filled jacket, ski gloves, ski pants and snowmobile boots. Shorty had a ball cap, an oilskin

Western Agribition. We must realize that the board of directors for Agribition are a group of volunteers who have had to make tough decisions on our behalf, but few thank them for their efforts, but rather carp about decisions. In that last week of November, we must all come together whether you are a participant or a visiting spectator. Those who chose to boycott this great event will only affect their own program and breeding programs. We must remember that whatever rules are given to Agribition by the province or city will be the ones we have to abide by to keep In this weird year of weather and circumstance, the show going. We are just weeks away from another general election full of promises from the parties attempting to get elected. Their promises are repetitive from all sides and nowhere in the party platforms is there a mention of agriculture or the lumber industry. It is bad enough to call this election while the Province of British Columbia burns and the prairies experience a record hot and arid growing season, but again, it seems that politicians find getting elected and receiving a pension is more important than food and shelter for the nation.

Developing a high-quality breeding establishment of Angus and Simmental seedstock with little fanfare and plenty of experience

JP CATTLE CO. THRIVING THROUGH DIVERSITY

The sleepy village of McAuley, Manitoba is situated east of the Manitoba/Saskatchewan border just about fifteen minutes from Moosomin, Saskatchewan, and thirty minutes from Virden, Manitoba in the rural municipality of Ellice- Archie. This beautiful area is where the Qu’Appelle and Assiniboine rivers meet and is steeped in history. It was an essential stopping and distribution point in the opening of the western frontier.

along the Fort Ellice Mountain Trail running twice a week, Tuesday, and Friday, returning the next day. The early settlers would gather at George McAuley’s for any word from the folks back home or discuss local gossip… the Facebook of that era.

In 1962 and having no background in agriculture, James and Evelyn Lowes started their farming careers by renting three quarters of farmland and pasture. By 1972, they saw fit to purchase the property and Fort Ellice was a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post it remains the home farm to this day. Raising pigs, and operated from 1794 to 1892. It was a major milking cows, and shipping cream was the norm in stopping point on the “Carlton Trail’’ which ran from those early years, but eventually, they quit raising the Red River Colony to Fort Edmonton. (The section hogs and started their dairy business, shipping milk leading from Upper Fort Gary was commonly known to the Rossburn plant. Brothers Barry and Glen as the Fort Ellice Trail). The fort acted as a staging continued to work on the farm after finishing high point for the Northwest Mounted Police who had school and in 1991 the Lowes family incorporated been sent west to establish law and order in the future the farm under the banner Ja-Lyn Farms. (Ja for provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The fort was James and Lyn for Evelyn). named after Edward Ellice, a British merchant, and an investor in the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1980 brother Dale and his wife Bonnie came home to join the operation. That year they constructed a Around 1880 Scottish and French-influenced pioneers new dairy barn and expanded the milking herd. (Dale came north and settled in the area, stopping at Fort was a very accomplished baseball catcher with a .319 Ellice for their goods and supplies. Travel was by batting average over 17 years. full-time members of the Lowes family. Barry and Glenn, Barry’s son, Justin; Glenn’s daughter, Brooke Canart; Glenn’s son, Stacy, and the brother’s wives, Brenda and Shelley, also help when their work and business schedules allow. Shelley is a school teacher, now retired and Brenda is a Senior Sales Director and an independent consultant for Sunset Gourmet Foods. Even though each member has a favorite task or interest, the teamwork at Ja-Lyn makes this family farm highly productive and successful. In 2013, the opportunity to purchase Sunrise Simmentals came up, a purebred herd owned by Evan and Linda Cuss, Spy Hill, Saskatchewan. Barry went to one of their business partners, Eric and Melissa Pateman, to see if they were interested in a new venture and as a result, the partnership of JP Cattle was formed. Today the Patemans jointly own over 200 registered Simmentals with the Lowes family, 250 commercial mother cows of their own, a grain farm of nearly 9000 acres, and a Pioneer Seed business. Teamed together they have been able to source and afford some of the most elite genetics available in North America. In 2017, the diversification continued when they purchased the mature Angus cowherd from Brent and Dale Stewart, Stewart Cattle Company, Russell, Manitoba. The Ja-Lyn commercial program has always been Angus-based so this was just another way to increase quality and efficiency in the program. Since they were already selling and producing Simmental bulls, the decision to add purebred Angus was a given. Barry will tell you, “Angus and Simmental complement each other very well!” The Lowes brothers have experienced all sectors of the livestock industry, dairy, feedlot, commercial cows so they have a good idea of what works well in the seedstock industry. “We can safely say we don’t get caught up in the fads of the day but stick to the meat and potatoes of the business…

shipping liner loads of fat cattle sure helps you keep on the straight and narrow. We are not afraid to step out and purchase the best genetics available, be it a bull, a semen package, or a donor quality female to improve our cow herd and produce high-quality bulls and females for our customer base. We will also take the absolute best of our two breeds and mate them to produce top quality percentage cattle, which our customer seems to want more and more.” The program was designed to produce bulls for their commercial sector which requires the use of thirty to forty bulls. Since Ja-Lyn sells bred heifers each fall, they also require bulls for cleanup as the heifers are A.I. bred to easy calving sires and to cover the replacements withheld. Barry and Brooke are responsible for most of the artificial inseminating, Stacy also does some cows when required. Now that the purebred sector is in high gear things have changed. Calving has moved to January so that the bulls are mature enough for early spring breeding and more attention is paid to the top prospects. Livestock shows offer a bit more interest… no

doubt, selecting a bull that went on to be Agribition Champion and a finalist in the Supreme would get anyone stirred. Embryo transplant has become more extensive at JP, the large commercial cow herd assists in this program and the results are more evident each year. With a spring bull sale and a female event in the fall, they decided to build a new sale facility just north of McAuley in 2018. It has also been a great help for several breeders in marketing their product during the pandemic. With little fanfare and plenty of experience, JP and the Lowes family have developed a high-quality breeding establishment of Angus and Simmental seedstock. Much can be learned from this family… leadership in their community and a goal to produce quality in numbers. Their diversified family farm should be a model for all to follow.

Old Times Shorty eased the truck and stock trailer up the last hill before he reached the barn. It was a nice Sunday afternoon and Shorty was alone on the ranch. His wife had gone to visit her sister for the weekend and the boss was away looking after other business and other then some stray cattle this morning, Shorty was good. As he rounded the last corner, Shorty glanced towards the barn. He was a little surprised to see a vehicle nosed into the north end of the barn. The vehicle at the barn wasn’t all that unusual, there always seemed to be some tourist stopping to look at the horses, but this one was parked like the driver had been there before. As Shorty pulled his rig to the shoulder of the road opposite the barn he noticed two things…. the vehicle, a light-coloured Ford, had out of province plates and there was a man standing behind it looking wistfully at Shorty’s spare horses. Shorty got out of the truck and nodded to the man. He was an older guy with grey hair and a grey moustache, dressed in blue jeans, a golf shirt and running shoes. “How are ya?” “Good,” Shorty replied. The man turned back to watch the horses as they welcomed back the horse in Shorty’s trailer. Shorty walked to the rear of the stock trailer, opened the big door and deftly caught his horse as it stepped out. Shorty’s dog leaped out of the trailer walked across the road and pee’d on the stranger’s truck. “Am I in the way?” “Nope you’re good.” Shorty walked into the barn with the horse in tow and the stranger turned and followed. Shorty stopped in the south end of the barn, tied the horse to a ring hanging on the wall and started to remove the saddle. The stranger was standing

near the tack rooms looking around. “Which door?” asked the man. “Huh?” The question threw Shorty off. “Which door do you need opened?” The man nodded towards the three doors that housed the ranch tack. “Oh... the middle one.” The stranger opened the door and looked inside. His eyes went immediately to some initials carved into the wooden wall. Shorty had always wondered about those initials and this guy may know something. He swung the saddle onto the rack, tossed the blankets over the saddle and turned back to the stranger. “They call me Shorty.” The man reached out and shook Shorty’s outstretched hand. “Dave….my name is Dave. You own this place?” “Oh God no!” Shorty laughed, “I’m just a worker bee. You seem pretty familiar with this place….” Dave smiled, nodded at the saddle tack room, and said “the bottom initials are mine, the ones with ’73 beside it. The others were there when I started, but they belonged to the guy that owned the place and his family. I think 1968 is the year the barn was built, at least the timing was about right.” Shorty had released his horse into the corral that contained his mates. “Always wondered about that. How long were you here?” “Which time?” grinned Dave. “I was back and forth a couple of times, probably spent six or seven years here in total.” By now the men were walking towards the front of the barn. “Hey Shorty…do want a drink? I got a cooler in the truck, no beer, but I got some water and a few pops.”

Today’s Angus Advantag e   44

TAA_EF_insides21.indd 44

2021-09-20 2:01:37 PM

“Sure, I got some time. Why are you here?” “Well… this place means a lot to me.” Dave tossed Shorty a Coke. “That okay?” “Sure is. Why is this place so special to you?” Dave opened his water and leaned against the barn. “Well …it is a long story. My Dad worked here when he was a kid, in fact he met my Mom while he was here, and they lived right over there after they married.” Dave nodded towards the remains of an old stone foundation across the road from the barn. “I lived here for a while as a baby as well, but I came back as a teenager and worked here as the cowboy. I lived with the owner and his family the first time I was here, that was really good for me as a young kid.” Dave paused for a second, like he was trying to shake some memories out of his head. “I lived up there in the big house on the bank the second time I was here, come to think of it, I met my wife here as well.” “Really? I live in that same house on the bank. How did you meet your wife up here, did she work here or something? “Nope, she was visiting some friends that needed a place to stay while their house was being built, so they ended up with me. That house is awful big when you are alone.” Shorty grinned. “Tell me about it, me and the wife live there now, by ourselves. It is huge!” Shorty was getting interested in this dude now, there were so many things he always wondered about on this ranch. “How many cows did you run back then?” “Quite a few…. we had about 600 commercial cows and a couple hundred purebreds… Herefords.” “Did you guys run back into the meadows?” As he asked that, it occurred to Shorty that Dave might not even know what he was talking about. Dave turned his head towards the west and the snowcovered peak that was visible beyond the tree covered hills surrounding the ranch. He didn’t have to say a thing. “I got a question that is driving me crazy” Shorty began. “Was there a travel trailer out there in the middle of nowhere?” Shorty glanced over at Dave. He was still looking at the mountain. “You mean the one in the meadow by the creek?” “Yah!” Shorty replied.

“Nope,” dead panned Dave. He turned back toward Shorty and grinned. “Actually, we put it there.” Shorty had always wanted to know how the trailer had gotten there. There wasn’t a road within ten miles, even now, and yet there it was, painted green, set up like it was in a campground in town. There was a small log barn, along with the remnants of a holding pen that was pretty much gone now. He looked at Dave and asked the burning question. “We flew it there with a Chopper. The Chopper dropped the tools we needed to set it all up and build the barn and corral. It took us a couple of weeks to get it all done and then we had to hike all the crap out of there on foot. We went out to the Fish River Main, we had a pick up parked out there in the bush.” Dave’s voice trailed off as though it had just happened last week. “I spent a lot of time in that place, I really loved that location. I imagine it has changed a lot now.” “Not that much. There is still a trail out to the main road, but doesn’t really end at the trailer, it kind of swings past the meadow without getting that close.” “That was my idea.” Dave looked at the young man. “I thought that if we directed people past the meadow toward the back side of Sheep past the meadow toward the back side of Sheep Ridge, we would stand a chance of keeping the trailer from getting wrecked. It must have worked, that trailer has been there since the late 70’s.” Both men went silent, Shorty mulled over what he had just learned, the old man deep in thought with his memories. “Thanks!” “Ya…no problem.” Dave extended his hand. “Time to go.” Shorty shook the old man’s hand. “It has been great to meet you, Dave.” “Yes, me too.” Dave climbed into the driver’s side of the Ford, backed out on the road and headed the vehicle towards town. As he drove away, he glanced at the young man in the rear-view mirror as he and his dog crossed the road. “Lucky bastard” he mumbled to himself. Shorty stood for a second and watched the old man start down the road. He called to his dog and started across the road towards the truck and trailer. As he approached the truck he glanced once more at the old man’s truck. “Lucky bastard” he mumbled.

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in aulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.” Today’s Angus Advantage  45

Identifying cattle with the CAA Green Tag provides the verification that they will meet a growing number of Angus programs that we acquire cattle for. The value of knowing these cattle will meet these programs needs adds value to how aggressive we will bid to acquire these calves. Holmes Livestock, Cattle Buyer As more and more global markets demand the Angus brand, sourcing cattle to meet our brand specs becomes increasing important and valuable. The assurance that the CAA Green Tag provides knowing purchased cattle will qualify for our Angus brands takes the guesswork out of the equation and adds value into the cattle we acquire. Nicolas Ednie Bouvry Exports Canada Backed by an unwavering commitment to sustainable beef production, JBS Canada is honoured to be a premier beef supplier in partnership with the Canadian Angus Association to provide consumers around the world with high quality, 100% Canadian, single-sourced Angus beef. It all begins with hardworking ranchers and farm families dedicated to raising their animals with utmost care and attention to every detail. We thank you for being a part of the Canadian Black Diamond Angus story, its heritage and tradition. Welcome to the family. David Colwell, President JBS Canada Est. 38, Brooks, Alberta With the Angus breed known for their strong marbling, genetics are the driver for quality meat. More customer programs look for the Angus callout and want to be associated with the breed as part of their offerings. The green tag program takes the guesswork and emotion out of the equation. It’s a guarantee you are getting the quality and assurances that are tied directly to an Angus program. A great selling tool that provides the confidence in what your end user values. Michael Gravelle Sr. Sales Director, Artisan Farms By having our partner Authentic Angus being part of the CAA’s Green Tag program and by having the backing of the Canadian Angus Association, we have been able to ensure that we meet the strict protocols for Angus label claims in Europe. Premium beef programs need premium standards, and the CAA helps us raise our standards against our international competitors. Andrea Pavesi Bervini Primo SRL, Reggio Emilia, Italy By being part of the CAA green tag program and working with the CAA, Authentic Angus was able o be the first Canadian beef brand in Europe to feature the Rancher Endorsed logo. Using the logo and having the backing of the CAA has given us additional credibility in the market and allowed us to simplify the process for making our Angus beef label claim.
