THE REAL

WORLD OUR COMMERCIAL MARKET PLACE BY CHRIS POLEY

And we thought last year was good! What a fantastic time to be in the beef business. In my travels lately, I have heard some incredible stories that really highlight just how strong this market has become. One of our longtime commercial bull buyers told me he sold his calves the other day for October delivery at virtually the same weight as last year—but the bid was just over $1.00 per pound higher. That kind of jump is hard to wrap your head around. I’ve also heard multiple reports of big, mature bulls bringing over $8,000, while cull cows are commonly selling on either side of $4,500. Those are numbers that would have seemed impossible not that long ago. Some of the best news, however, isn’t coming from the auction market—it’s coming from the pasture. For the first time in six years, at the end of July there wasn’t a single region in Western Canada classified as being in drought. Everywhere I’ve been, there’s green grass, and lots of it. After several difficult years, it’s refreshing to drive across the countryside and see cattle grazing abundant pastures. As positive as that is, it also sends a message to order buyers and feedlots.

Instead, there’s growing concern that a much larger run of calves could hit the market in November once the weather turns. If that happens, it could put significant pressure on prices—not because demand isn’t there, but because the transportation system simply won’t be able to move cattle quickly enough. At today’s values, nobody wants stale, stressed calves standing around waiting for trucks. If you have the flexibility, my advice is simple: try to avoid marketing your calves during the November rush. Sell a little earlier or, if it works for your operation, hold off until after the peak. I don’t believe there’s a bad time to be selling cattle in this market, but there may be opportunities to capture even more value by avoiding what could become a logistical bottleneck. No matter when you sell, these are exciting times. The cattle business has weathered some incredibly challenging years to get here, and producers have earned every bit of this opportunity through resilience, perseverance, and good management. Capture everything you can. You’ve worked incredibly hard, and you deserve it.

In a recent conversation with a large cattle feeder, he shared that because pasture conditions are so good across Western Canada, they’re anticipating fewer calves moving early this fall. Normally, as grass runs short in drier areas, calves begin coming to town. This year, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

MARKET UPDATE The fed cattle trade continued lower last week in what can be aptly described as a precipitous decline in a matter of just four weeks. Average fed steer values have slipped $28.55/cwt. since the week ending June 26th, an 11% price decrease. The combined effects of fund liquidation in CME Live Cattle contracts and softer cutout values have not been kind to spot cash cattle values. These factors, plus especially high heat indexes across cattle feeding regions have made feedlot managers more willing sellers. Harvest volumes have not changed appreciably in the past few weeks, although last week’s total was up 3,000 head from the prior week’s total. While packer cash margins are showing improvement, they’re a long way from encouraging upticks in production volume.

By Paul Dykstra

We often describe July as the month of "burgers and hot dogs" as we consider families embarking on summer vacations and consumers generally turning toward lighter summer fare. Yet wholesale spot market ground beef prices have fallen between 17% and 40% in three of the past five years during the month of July. In the past month, 81% lean ground beef wholesale values have dropped 21% after reaching a high for the year of $4.22/lb. in late June (Expana). Buying should pick up for grinds as the "back to school" and Labor Day seasonal uptick gets underway in August. Choice carcass values dipped 2% below a year ago in July. This is after averaging a 14% premium to 2025 in the first half of the year. This generates some concern in the industry about waning beef demand. Yet the momentum of increasing beef prices in the past five years has created a short term upward trajectory that, when realistically analysed, is unsustainable. In fact, many might agree that current retail beef prices are challenging for a large portion of the consumer base. The demand that beef has enjoyed is a focal point of mainstream U.S. consumption. It’s a historic development, considering the tightest cattle supplies in 75 years have inflated wholesale cutout values.

Carcass weights in the latest report show steers 5 lb. heavier to average 968 lb. The seasonal charts suggest that the turnaround, now two weeks dated, may have marked the summer low. Arguing against this, however, is the weather factor that had brutally high heat indexes leaving the heaviest feedlot cattle likely losing weight during the ensuing two weeks yet to be officially reported by USDA. Carcass cutout values were moderately softer in last week’s reports with further July pressure coming from buyers taking a hand-to-mouth approach for their short-term spot market needs. Price weakness is noted especially across the short loin, strip loin and sirloin cuts while chuck and round items held their price positions a bit more firmly.

Shifting July Markets The July beef market has undergone a seasonal downtrend characteristic of historical performance for the month. Conclusion of the Independence Day holiday normally brings about a marked decline in middle meat demand as summer temperatures elevate. Consequently, total carcass values become pressured as the highest valued cuts give ground to lower prices under this seasonal pressure. The 0×1 strip loin is the cut most impacted by this seasonality as it tends to not only undergo a July dip, but typically continues to complete a nearly 30% price downturn from late June through mid-October.

The concerning fact that the industry continues to face is that, despite a massive downturn in fed cattle prices in the past few weeks, packers remain unprofitable. Between Hedger’s Edge and Sterling Marketing’s "Profit Tracker", packer margins are estimated recently between $120 and $200 per head in the red. The only plausible way to get the packing sector to a break even is to further align their input costs (cattle) with revenue (beef and offal). It’s certainly possible that cutout values make another run toward $400/cwt. this year. It seems more likely that the second half of the year could hold cutout values closer to those of a year ago, rather than the 14% increase recorded in the first six months. That would not be altogether bad for consumer demand, but still leaves a lot to discover relative to the fed cattle price piece of the packer’s equation.

Canadian Angus Hall of Fame Inductee Don Mackenzie In 1971, his bull Red Stormalong 3A became the Grand Champion at the Calgary Bull Show, setting a 71-year record by selling for $7,200. The accolades continued for decades with landmark sires and females, including Red Mac Leader 41R, which set a national record in 1983 by selling for $21,250 for half interest at just five and a half months old.

CAA Past President Don Mackenzie was inducted into the Canadian Angus Hall of Fame at the Canadian Angus National Convention in Kamloops, BC on June 26, 2026. Don Mackenzie’s pioneering work transformed the Canadian beef sector and established Red Angus cattle as a cornerstone of the nation’s livestock industry. In September 1962, Don and his brother Rod Jr. traveled to Wyoming and brought home the foundation animals that became the first Registered Red Angus herd in Canada. Recognizing the breed’s immense potential, Don played a vital role in convincing the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Association to open its herd book to include Red Hided cattle in the fall of 1968. He then took to the road to champion the breed, including traveling by railcar to exhibit cattle at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto and competing in the inaugural 1971 Agribition in Regina.

Don’s global impact was recognized internationally when the Mackenzie family became the first nonfounding members to receive the Pioneer Breeder Award from the Red Angus Association of America in 1979, followed by being named one of the fifty most influential breeders at the association’s 50th anniversary in 2004, where they were the sole Canadian honorees. Beyond individual show ring triumphs, Don focused on building lasting institutions for fellow producers. He was a founding member of the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society and helped organize the initial Red Roundup event in 1972. His promotion of the breed was always a family affair, as he fostered a passion for cattle in his daughters through regular participation in junior heifer shows and a 55-year history of uninterrupted Bull Sales. Having achieved a 50-year membership milestone with the Canadian Angus Association in 2017, Don’s enduring legacy is found in the next generation of leadership and the lifelong friendships developed across the global agricultural community.

The Canadian Angus community extends sincere Don served two terms on the Canadian Angus thanks to Don Mackenzie for his remarkable Association board of directors, serving as President dedication and impact on the breed. for the 2003/2004 term, and later leading the Canadian Beef Breeds Council as President in 2007/2008. Mackenzie’s lifelong commitment to breed improvement earned him widespread recognition and historic success in the sale ring. Todays Angus Advantag e

Canadian Angus Hall of Fame Inductee Frank Strimbold and the Cross Country Sale, as well as participating in BC sales held in Chilliwack, Armstrong, Williams Lake, and Vanderhoof. He sold bulls throughout British Columbia and Alberta, including regular sales in Vanderhoof, Kamloops, and Williams Lake. In later years, he was proud to be part of the Northern Alliance Sale alongside his daughters and close friends Jim and Shirley Moon and Kim Beaudette. Frank Strimbold was inducted into the Canadian Angus Hall of Fame at the Canadian Angus National Convention in Kamloops, BC on June 26, 2026 where his children Monica, Lia, Tanya and Tony accepted the award on his behalf. Frank and Dianne Strimbold established Poplar Meadows Angus in 1965, beginning what would become a lifelong commitment to the Angus breed. In the early years, they faced challenges, often receiving discounted prices for their black calves, but remained steadfast in their belief in the superiority of Angus cattle. Determined to improve their herd, Frank carefully searched for a bull with a 365-day weight of over 1,000 pounds, eventually acquiring one from Camilla Stock Farms. Frank went on to dedicate more than 50 years to the cattle industry. He was actively involved with the BC Angus Association, serving as a director for 20 years, including time as chair, and representing British Columbia at the national level from 2006 to 2012. He travelled extensively across Canada attending Canadian Angus Association annual general meetings, always taking the opportunity to connect with fellow breeders and stay engaged with the industry. Frank was also instrumental in supporting and mentoring many new Angus breeders across British Columbia, generously sharing his knowledge and experience with operations such as Marberly Angus and Schochaneetqua Angus, as well as individuals including Mike Monkman, Judy and Gary Meerdink, Bev O’Brien, Sandy and Harry Anaka, and Lance and Shirley Hamblin. Frank actively marketed his cattle through a number of respected venues, consigning to the Torro Negro Sale

For many years, Frank consigned bulls to the governmentrun Tranquille Bull Test Station and participated in the ROP program. He strongly believed in using bulls with high gain ability and low maintenance, always striving to produce cattle that were both efficient and practical for commercial producers. Known for being ahead of his time, Frank placed strong emphasis on progressive genetic selection. He was especially pleased to reach an agreement with Lloyd Pickard to obtain Canadian Colossal semen, further advancing his breeding program. Frank and Dianne also enjoyed travelling together, including trips to Europe where they visited cattle herds and continued learning about the breed on an international level. Frank judged several shows throughout British Columbia and took great pride in evaluating cattle and supporting fellow breeders. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in 4-H, taking great pride in their involvement and accomplishments. In the Angus world, perhaps his greatest accomplishment was his family. His daughters, Tanya Belsham, who continues under the Poplar Meadows Angus prefix, and Lia Long of Blast Angus, carry on his passion and dedication to the breed. That legacy is now extending to the next generations, as his grandchildren and great-granddaughters begin building their own Angus herds. Frank passed away in March 2015, and Dianne in April 2022. Together, they built not only a respected Angus operation, but a lasting legacy of dedication, community, and family that continues to this day. The Canadian Angus community thanks Frank Strimbold for his significant contribution to the Angus breed.

Long-term Recognition Award Presented to Lia Long-Strimbold at Convention Her journey has taken her from studying Animal Health Technology at Fairview College, to working with registered Hereford cattle, serving as a Range Assistant, and building a successful 25-year career in real estate. Yet throughout every chapter of her life, Angus cattle remained at the heart of who she is. Together with her husband, Brent, she established BLAST Angus, building a respected operation while raising twins, Shea and Tori, and continuing the proud traditions of the cattle industry. Their herd has produced quality cattle sold through bull sales across the province and, more recently, directly off the farm. Outside of the cattle, when Brent is not farming he can be found with their equipment at their gravel pit.

We have the privilege of recognizing a remarkable woman whose life has been deeply rooted in the Angus breed and in the ranching traditions of British Columbia. Raised on the family farm at Poplar Meadows Angus in Topley, she is part of a ranching legacy that stretches back to the late 1800s, when her great-grandparents first homesteaded in the Bulkley Valley. In fact, the same summer range her cattle graze today is the very land her ancestors used generations ago. From an early age, she developed a love for cattle, working alongside her father, Frank Strimbold, showing Angus cattle at local fairs, participating in 4-H, and attending junior Angus events. She purchased her first registered heifer from her parents in 1976, and soon after added Woodmont Madame 2J, a cow that helped shape the direction of her herd. Through a family trade involving the renowned Camilla Chance 37T, she selected a heifer that would establish one of her most treasured cow families; Poplar Meadows Mayflower 2K, the foundation of the Mayflower line that continues in her herd today, including the remarkable 18-year-old Blast Miss Mayflower 20U.

Just as importantly, she has dedicated herself to giving back. She has served as a 4-H leader, been a director of her local Cattlemen’s Association since its inception and has found some of her greatest joy in mentoring young people and providing cattle to 4-H members. Today, she is helping inspire a fourth generation, sharing her love of cattle with her granddaughter Addie and continuing the family tradition of stewardship and mentorship. She credits her father for instilling in her the importance of sound, structurally correct cattle and remains grateful for the knowledge and support of her sister, Tanya, throughout her journey. Even after 50 years in the Angus business, she continues to embrace new technologies, including genomic testing, always striving to improve the breed and the profitability of the industry she loves. Congratulations to a dedicated cattlewoman, mentor, community leader, and lifelong ambassador for the Angus breed as we celebrate her 50 years of membership in the Canadian Angus Association Lia Strimbold-Long

Vet’s Advice

COMMON CALVING MALPRESENTATIONS AND SOLUTIONS

Calving season is upon us and I know calving issues have been greatly reduced over the years. Birthweights and calving ease are things we can mostly control. The things we can’t control are malpresentations, which need to be recognized first and sorted out. I know this will be a review for most of you but reviewing things is never a bad thing. There are some cows that can deliver a calf with a foot back but these are very rare indeed so most have to be helped. One still needs to have sharp observation skills knowing when a cow is not acting right or has been straining for an hour with no progress one should examine her. Then there are the instances where one recognizes only one foot is protruding out the birth canal or when only the head is presented. These are obvious signs the cow is in trouble and the quicker we can intervene the better.

By Roy Lewis, DVM

With a forward presentation there needs to be three things present. If two feet with the head just behind are not present one must go searching. These cases will require some work and manipulation inside the birth canal so use two obstetrical sleeves held up with elastics or held on with a calving suit. The choice is yours but the bottom-line is being able to clean up the cow appropriately and keep yourself, especially your arms, very clean. If doing this by yourself it is best to use a maternity pen and have the tail tied to one side. I like booster cable clamps which will give way if the cow goes down etc. To make it easier on yourself try and have the cow standing for all manipulations. When one is looking for a missing head or leg back take some time to explore and find out where the missing part is. If the head is back which side is it turned to or is it underneath. Which leg is back and how far back is it. I have

had, over the years, many farmers phone with what they thought was a backwards calf only to find the head was pushed so far around the calf appeared to be coming backwards. An easy way to determine back versus front legs is with front legs, the first two joints should bend the same way. Mistakes are made when a producer feels the elbow joint, which is the third joint on the front leg, and jumps to the conclusion that it is the hock on the back leg. This is a common mistake. Depending on what is protruding, to get room to lift up a retracted leg one must repel the other leg and head further back into the birth canal. This will take potentially lots of lube and you having to fight against the cow’s contractions. An epidural may help in some situations but most are done without. If you have caught the cow early it may be a matter of going in and pulling the retracted foot up. Make sure and cup around the hoof so as not to poke a hole in the cows uterus. Once you get all three things lined up then proceed on with the normal calving. Sometimes the head and one leg are both through the vulval lips. This means the missing leg is considerably repelled and if the calf is still alive the whole mass must be pushed into the vagina to get room. Severe ones may need a C-section if calf is still alive or a fetotomy by your veterinarian if the calf has died but the vast majority can be pushed in and turned into a normal delivery. Veterinarians now use 10 cc of ephinephrine given in the muscle to relax the uterus. You would have in your emergency kit for allergic reactions. Just like vertinarians find this relaxes the uterus so will you if you try it.

Todays Angus Advantag e

34

When the head is back one must again figure out which side it is deflected to and which direction it will be pulled around. The quicker it is found the easier this should be but one can use the legs as a handle to repel the calf in to open up the room in the uterus. Several techiques include cupping the hands under the head and swinging it around to grabbing the calf’s nostrils, to using a head snare. An extra long chain properly placed through the mouth and behind the ears will mimic a head snare. There are commercial head snares you can buy. All techniques will depend on the force necessary to get the head to pull around. Once corrected I always check to see if the calf is alive by putting my hand way inside its mouth and see if I get a bite or swallow gag reflex.

I am sure you realize malpresentations are increased with twins so always check for a second calf. Recognize your limits and if getting no significant progress after 20 minutes call for backup. This may be a more experienced person or your veterinarian whichever you feel is more appropriate. With every calving the goal is always to get a live calf but the other goal should also be to look after the cow. Be clean to avoid contamination and facilitate breeding for next year. Use appropriate painkillers where described by your veterinarian. Any cows assisted in any way unless it was very easy warrants NSAIDs as well as to the calf. Lets hope this calving season goes well but remember when malpresentations do happen, what you can do to help can make a real difference in the final outcome. Have the necessary supplies such as chains, handles, head snare, gloves, surgical soap and lubricant there if you need them and good luck. Keep yourself and the cow/heifer clean on the back as the other goal is rebreeding. Have a great 2026 calving season everyone.

Vet’s Advice

Calves which have died in utero, I find it is common for a limb to be down possibly from lack of rigidity. They need correcting to at least get the calf out so the cow may go on to be able to adopt a twin or orphan.

Ava Loveridge of Melville, SK was recognized with the Spirit of Youth Award for enthusiasm, leadership, participation and guidance of younger members. The highest-scoring juniors who competed throughout Showdown received Grand Aggregate awards. The junior division (ages 9–12) Grand Aggregate winner was Jordyn Petherick of Campbellford, Ontario. The reserve junior Grand Aggregate was presented to Corbin Reid of Moorefield, Ontario. In the intermediate division (ages 13–16), the Grand Aggregate winner was Grace Knox of Hampton, Ontario. Gus Reid of Moorefield, Ontario was reserve intermediate Grand Aggregate. In addition, the Angus Roots scholarship program adds four additional winners in the Grand Aggregate intermediate division. Each recipient receives $500 in trust for when they enter post-secondary education. The Angus Roots recipients are Navada Murray of Tilley, Alberta, Sadie Dudgeon of Dobbinton, Ontario, Miah Hurley of Glencoe, Ontario, and Paisley Robertson of Medicine Hat, Alberta. The senior division (ages 17-21) Grand Aggregate was won by Allison Morse of Hatley, Quebec. Reserve Grand Aggregate went to Lexi Dietrich of Forestburg, Alberta.

To compete for the Grand Aggregate award, Juniors must compete in at least eight of the following Showdown competitions: conformation, showmanship, literature, judging, scrapbook, photography, art competition, marketing, sales talk, team grooming and public speaking. Competitors receive aggregate points based on participation and how they place in all competitions. At the end of all the competitions, the individual with the most points is named the grand aggregate for the year. The grand aggregates are presented with a cash award and a buckle, and the reserve aggregates are presented with a cash award at the final Showdown banquet. The second annual Heifers of Distinction class was featured on Saturday July 18—a class that incorporates judging 50% on Genomic EPD’s prior to the show and 50% on conformation placings in the ring. Champion, presented to Gus Reid of Moorefield, Ontario, Reserve Champion

was awarded to Anna Enright of Renfrew, Ontario. Rounding out the class was Arthur Brissette of Bromont, Quebec, taking third. Canadian Junior Angus (CJA) is the national association for Angus youth up to age 21. CJA’s goal is to help prepare future cattlemen for the beef industry by educating and informing juniors about the Angus industry. Showdown began in 2000 as a way for juniors from across the nation to gather in one location to exhibit their Angus cattle in conformation divisions. It rotates to provinces throughout the country every July. There have been many different activities and contests added over the years with 14 competitions now available including marketing, sales talk, judging, team judging, team grooming, photography, literature, art, scrapbooking, public speaking, Angus cook-off, best herdsman, showmanship, and conformation as the current competitions.
