The winner will receive $3,500.

CAF Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador | Applications due April 30 Retail meat trends analyst urges The Junior Ambassador is sponsored by the Canadian Angus Foundation. The ambassador acts as a role model for youth and represents members of the Canadian Angus Association. It is an opportunity to network with leaders in the agriculture industry and cattlemen to join the conversation learn from them. Ambassadors have the opportunity to attend at least one international event and various major agricultural events in Canada. This position is for one year. Jones Connect with the changing food culture to keep beef at the center of more plates. That’s advice from Anne-Marie Roerink of 210 Analytics, who spoke at the lateAugust Feeding Quality Forum in Amarillo.

60 “We can elevate the profile of beef from a health perspective, from a nutrition, from animal welfare, impact on the environment and everything else,” she said.

Retailers, “key partners with the meat industry,” especially follow Roerink’s annual “Power of Meat” surveys. The latest noted 86% of Americans consider themselves “meat eaters.” Old news to the national media, however.

“The biggest media debate right now is on plant-based eating,” she said. “To meat or not to meat.” Her annual survey identified minor diet categories of “flexitarian” (mostly plant-based with occasional meat) and the increasingly “hip” vegan.

But headlines don’t reflect the trendlines, Roerink said. Meat sold at retail adds up to $90 billion, while plant-based alternatives linger below $1 billion. Meat sales would climb if younger shoppers gain kitchen confidence and begin to stock up.

“One of our biggest issues in the meat industry is the fact that people’s refrigerators and freezers are empty,” she said. “We need to get people back to planning and being part of their inspiration to get meat into their fridge, on their weekly menus.” Consumers are uncomfortable shopping for meat and trying to prepare beef, so they only buy enough for one meal or a few days at a time.

Generations Y (“millennials”) and Z rely on brands to add confidence, and Roerink says that’s an opportunity for premium leaders such as the Certified Angus Beef® brand.

“Where millennials have no knowledge base, they trust the brands that deliver,” she said. “And as for getting people to buy more beef more often, there’s no better trigger than a positive eating experience.” new technology helps the young shoppers who grew up with it, but everything is connected. nutrition, emotional and physical wellness all ties back to food as consumers

focus on wants versus needs, Roerink said. They look at product Belinda Wagner at 306-757-6133 or attributes, transparency and convenience. “The instant pot and air fryer are helping millennials expand their culinary comfort zones,” she said, to prepare more beef items than just the few they’re buying now because of the variety they offer.

at bwagner@cdnangus.ca canangusfoundation.ca juniors.cdnangus.ca

“Working together as an industry, we can get in on the ground level of that new technology and really tie our beef items in with that as well,” Roerink said. Consumers doubt beef sustainability and production practices because “all they hear is everything we do wrong.” She said cattlemen still enjoy a high level of trust, however and need to “talk about all we do right,” and point out facts such as 99% of households consume meat. “Get active on social media and talk to people about how you raise your animals and how your family is involved, or invite your neighbors over for a tour of the ranch,” Roerink said, noting a transition from linear to circular food chains with more consumer input at every link. european retail meat trends often come to America 10 years later, she said. Across the Atlantic, plant-based items have their own section, earned from environmental benefit claims. Stores feature a wider variety of choices than in the u.S., but she said those trends are coming here.

A meat specialist in The netherlands told Roerink, “Trust me, I fought it as long as I could. But once that sign was in there I just couldn’t fight it any more…we realized that by embracing the fact that some people want a plant-based alternative, we actually did better in meat. My meat sales are actually up.” Barbecue suggestions include meat, fish and vegetarian. “Sometimes we have to keep an open mind in order to still be on the plate—even a blended item like a mushroom burger is still 75% beef— we can meet the consumer a little bit halfway,” she said, envisioning a future where “revenue is the reward for doing things right. And the right thing means looking at how society is changing, and changing with it.”

It is May Day time as Canadian beef producers need more marbling, higher yield and more pounds per day! May Day 3113 meets all these demands with a super star momma. His dam, 4562, is a full sister and flush mate to the super feminine S A V donor, 4563, described by Kelly Schaff as the most feminine S A V donor since 0451, the dam of Bismarck. Yes, we have a 0451 daughter at Bar 5 too, so we agree, these “Revere x 4136” are where we need to be. 4562 is the only 4136 daughter we know of in Canada and she walks the pastures of Bar 5. 3113 was born at 82 pounds and came off momma at a whopping 936 pounds in August. He will be an anchor to our future, as will his dam, 4562. Stop by Bar 5 for a visit and view our S A V Angus Donor Program; 4562, 6696, 8588, 3188, 7447, 0356, 2208, 4266, 4277, 5452, 5646, 801 are all S A V cows or their daughters walking around our pastures, as is our S A V herd bulls, 4896 and 5115. May Day 3113 combines Ten X on Rito blood that always results in great power cattle, with high end EPDs across the board. If you are selling into a Branded Angus Beef Program, like we are, you know carcass EPDs are essential! May Day will ensure you hit the grid, while maintaining performance!

Canadian Angus Association Mentorship Program “In learning you will teach, in teaching you will learn.” Phil Collins, English drummer, singer and songwriter

Mentorship is about sharing experiences and knowledge that will help someone through obstacles in their life and in their career. Often people are mentored or act as a mentor without even realizing the importance of what has taken place. The Canadian Angus Mentorship Program provides a great opportunity for aspiring, new and experienced cattle producers to exchange experience and knowledge. Mentorship provides rewards for both the mentors as well as those being mentored.

Looking for a Mentor?

Have you ever wanted a second opinion? Looked for sage advice and maybe a kind word? Do you want to know what works and what doesn’t, without the trial and error of testing it out for yourself? One-on-one mentorship will help ensure that information is understood and you are able to put it to good use. Individual mentors will be able to provide further details and more in-depth explanations as they pertain to each individual’s situation and will be based on real-life experiences.

Thinking of Becoming a Mentor?

Being a mentor has great benefits: • Broaden your network and ties with the community • Enhance your analytical skills • Provide opportunities for professional exchange with a fresh perspective • Meet and connect with new and upcoming breeders • Help guide the future of the Canadian Angus industry • Leave a legacy • It feels good to help others

Individuals interested in becoming a mentor or a mentee can find more information on our website at www.cdnangus.ca or call 1-888-571-3580.

CBK 40C - BRED TO ONEILLS BLACK BARDOLIER

Social Media Shorty had had a long day. He had spent the last 10 hours gathering, then moving a large herd of cow calf pairs into the ranch’s high-altitude range, and there were plenty more to move tomorrow. Still…he was in no hurry to get to the house. Shorty’s wife Cathy had reminded him last night that her best friend Sandi was coming to visit and, well Sandi with an “I” was kind of a pain in the ass. Fortunately, she only came for a visit when she had a relationship break up, unfortunately, she had nearly as many of those as she has tattoos. Shorty figured nobody over an age that ended in teen or started with “t” should be getting tattoos, but Sandi disagreed. The ranch rocket rolled to a stop in front of the house, and before Shorty could shut the door, Sandi was there to greet him. “Shorty!” She had her arms outstretched as she ran towards him. “Sandi.” Shorty was somewhat less enthusiastic, but politely accepted her hug. He couldn’t help but notice the tattooed bluebird perched on her left front just visible above her neckline. “You like it?” Sandi was pointing at the bluebird. “I just got it a couple of weeks ago…” her voice was less enthusiastic now, “I got it after Dwayne left.” Shorty had no idea who or what ‘Dwayne’ was but played along.

“Is that an eastern bluebird or a mountain bluebird?” Shorty didn’t really care, but he needed to kill time until his wife arrived. “I dunno…I will Google it!” Sandi pulled her phone out of her shorts and set out to answer Shorty’s pressing question. “Hey.. did you see on Facebook that Rick and his wife broke up? I couldn’t believe it!” “No.” Shorty’s answer was concise. “Well they did!” “Ah Sandi? Shorty doesn’t do Facebook.” Cathy had finally arrived. “What!!! You don’t do Facebook? Shorty! How do you know how many friends you have? How do you get the news? You don’t do Facebook…unbelievable!” “Well Sandi, I count my friends on my fingers, usually on one hand and I get my news the old-fashioned way from the TV and radio. Cathy will let me know if anything earth shattering happens that doesn’t make the news media.” “Oh Shorty… social media is the only way to go. It is the way of the future Shorty, you have to get with it. I would be lost without my phone, I use it for everything!” “Do you use it for talking?” “Of course! I talked to Cathy this morning. I mostly text, but I talk too.” Sandi was studying her phone

Today’s Angus Advantag e   38

intently now, scrolling furiously. “I think it is a mountain, no eastern… no mountain, yup definitely mountain… or eastern.” She held her phone in her left hand for Shorty and Cathy to see and pointed to the bluebird tattoo. “That looks like the one on the left right? Yeah the one on the right and that is a mountain bluebird.” Cathy quietly nodded her approval; Shorty had spent way too much time looking at a bluebird tattoo. He figured by the time Sandi hit fifty, that bluebird would look like a cartoon vulture and he really didn’t want to see that either.

“Shorty.” Cathy was…well staring at her husband. “Play nice!” “You know girls… I have a lot of time to think when I am out there,” Shorty motioned towards the range, “ and I never once think that anyone else other than my horse and dog need to hear about what I think. It just doesn’t really matter what I think and come to think of it, most of what I think is pretty mundane. So, I will keep it where it belongs…in my head.” Shorty had enough of the chatter and turned towards the house. “Sandi… I have seven.”

“I can’t believe you don’t do Facebook Shorty… that is so weird!”

“Seven what Shorty?”

“Well Sandi, I figure that Facebook is a great place for people with nothing to say to prove just that.”

“Does that count me Shorty?”

“Shorty! It is more than that, there is always something happening that people need to know about…” “Really? I know one thing, Sandi… if something happens to someone in my family, a car wreck or something, I want to hear about from a family member or the police before I hear about it on Facebook. Come to think about it, the same goes for Google. Google is probably great for finding the nearest Dairy Queen, not so good for finding out why you have a lump on your neck. I just think that people are putting too much faith in the internet these days. Society would function with much more integrity if people used their phones to talk to their real friends then to count their Facebook friends.”

“Seven friends.” Shorty wasn’t sure if Sandi was serious or not, but he didn’t hesitate. “Nope… counting the dog and two of those horses I ride…stuck on seven.” Shorty never looked back, seven was probably high, but it was way more than the number of his tattoos.

Shorty wasn’t quite sure why he went on that little rant, but it had shut Sandi up. She was standing there, quietly putting her phone back into her short’s pocket. She looked sad. Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.” Today’s Angus Advantag e   39

What’s Your

Legacy? Canadian Angus Foundation’s Building the Legacy Sale 9 Saturday June 13, 2020 – 8pm EST Delta Beausejour, Moncton, New Brunswick Building the Legacy has become Canadian Angus Foundation’s main fundraiser focus and is a main source for generating resources to further our mission. Please join us. The Canadian Angus Foundation functions to preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research, and historical preservation and restoration. The Canadian Angus Foundation was incorporated in 1993 and is the charitable arm of the Canadian Angus Association. The vision of Building the Legacy is to allow the Foundation to build monetary resources. The Foundation uses its funds to provide opportunities for our youth, young breeders and membership to grow in the areas of leadership, marketing, networking, animal husbandry, genetic improvement and to learn about developing tools to enhance Angus production. The vision also includes the importance of preserving Angus history. By fostering these areas we can ensure our Angus history is not lost and will keep Angus as the breed of choice for the commercial beef sector and end users for years to come. Because of generous donors, we can support initiatives, scholarships, travel bursaries and learning opportunities. Through benevolent donations of livestock, semen, embryos, items and experiences, as well as the purchasing of the auction offerings, the Foundation is able to put together a great suite of opportunities for our Angus membership. Please join us!

Add Value To Your Genetics With the Canadian Angus RFID Indicator

Ordering your Canadian Angus tags has never been so easy: Please order directly from CCIA online at www.canadaid.ca or call 1-877-909-2333 CCIA carries both the Datamars brand Temple Tag ComfortEar Canadian Angus RFID indicator as well as the Allflex brand Canadian Angus RFID indicator.

• Canadian Angus tagged animals are in high demand by Canadian Angus beef programs; sell direct or through one of the 169 Canadian Angus Feeder Sales across Canada • Canadian Angus indicators visually and electronically identify Angus and Angus cross cattle. It’s our guarantee that the animal bearing the indicator has a minimum of 50% Angus genetics. • Third-party age verification • CCIA compliant indicator—no other indicator is required for national identification • The use of Canadian Angus RFID indicators allows you to also purchase Canadian Angus management tags

“I have used the green Angus tags with good success for years, and I recommend all my clients use the tag. The tag is recognizable, stands out, and indicates the animal is of genetics of the greatest beef breed worldwide. I have had both the original flopper green tag and the yellow CCIA tag remain on the animal from birth to sale some 10 to 12 years later. The longevity and visibility of the tag is of great economic value.” - Victor Fischer, FISCHER ANGUS QUARTER HORSES, Sherwood Park, AB Today’s Angus Advantag e   54

The Buzz About Beef Retail meat trends analyst urges cattlemen to join the conversation By Natalie Jones Connect with the changing food culture to keep beef at the center of more plates. That’s advice from Anne-Marie Roerink of 210 Analytics, who spoke at the lateAugust Feeding Quality Forum in Amarillo. “We can elevate the profile of beef from a health perspective, from a nutrition, from animal welfare, impact on the environment and everything else,” she said.

They look at product attributes, transparency and convenience. “The instant pot and air fryer are helping millennials expand their culinary comfort zones,” she said, to prepare more beef items than just the few they’re buying now because of the variety they offer.
