On August 22, 2022, the Global Drought Observatory reported that 2/3’s of Europe was under a drought warning. We feel sympathy for our American and European associates as we here in Canada, suffered that same woe just a year ago. In the livestock industry, we all know that drought leads directly to cow slaughter.
Grass backgrounded steers, weighing 900 to 1100 lbs. are commanding record high prices, while heavy weights, good quality, weaned stockers are bringing $2.50 and up. The market is strong and growing
Thestronger.butcher
summer visits throughout Canada, I have opened a lot of gates and toured herds big and small. The fall lineup of sales offers outstanding Angus breeding stock that will hit the market… young stock with fresh, new genetics in both females and bulls.
In Canada, our cup overflows with optimism, enthusiasm, and plans for an exciting future. Last week, the election of a new Tory leader… young, aggressive, and highly intelligent, has changed the mind set for many forward-thinking Canadians… now the people who live west of Thunder Bay will not have to feel treated like renters. The crops throughout the country are bountiful … plenty of grain and forage supplies for our friends in the feedlot sector. Much of the grazing lands have had adequate rainfall to replenish pastures and ponds.
We have talked out the North American beef cow shortage and this summer’s weather has put more pressure on the cow/calf sector. Watching the market and seeing the high-quality heavy weight stockers bring premiums, signals that producers need to upgrade to young, new genetics with predictable production. Rebuilding the national cow herd base is not an overnight operation but to capitalize on the years of strong markets one must start
Todays Angus Advantag e 16
Over the past decade there were happenings that caused it to be difficult to remain positive about the livestock industry. No doubt the pandemic and weather issues cast a big shadow on the nation and moreover the world. Drought for our friends south of the boarder has made summer headlines. On July 12, 2022, nearly 45% was in a severe drought covering 42 states… mostly cattle producing western states.
market on cows and bulls remains strong…. very strong. The first rainy day will be a great time to drive through the herd and analyze productivity. Every herd has “free-loaders” that eat as much as your best cows, even old “Betsy” your favorite cow gets old… and don’t forget about your old herd bulls.
Duringnow.my
The Fall of 2022 will be an exciting sale season with increased profit margins… enjoy them… it’s our turn!
But the leading news is a booming cattle market. Today you can peg live cattle for April delivery at $2.00 a pound and the commodity charts point to levels much higher in the months and years to come.

Types of Vaccine Products
My previous article: Viruses, Disease and Vaccine – A Brief Overview; explained that most infectious diseases are caused by bacteria or viruses; antibiotics are intended to combat bacteria, not viruses; and the best way to fight a viral disease is through prevention. Avoiding contact with viruses, including those potentially shedding viruses, is arguably the best way to prevent infection, but is not always practical or possible. Maintaining a completely isolated population of animals, or even a closed herd with absolutely no contact with outside animals of the same species is often difficult or even impossible on most beef cattle operations. Several viruses may survive outside of the animal and can be carried on boots, clothing and equipment. Some can be transported by alternative host species, in many cases without disease symptoms. The most economically important livestock disease on the planet is Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Footand-mouth disease virus (FMDV) can be shed in milk; survive in imported meat; carried on human skin, clothing, vehicle tires; transported by birds and other animals; and can survive in contaminated bedding, dry manure, and even frozen soil for several weeks. Maintaining closed borders, strict import requirements, and limiting or preventing contact with livestock by visitors are the best measures to keep FMD out. What about when a viral disease takes up permanent residence; in other words, become endemic? Limiting spread of the disease and consequent losses becomes almost impossible without a vaccine. Remember, antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses!
All vaccines are made by modifying or replicating a piece of the original virus or bacteria to stimulate the production of specialized white blood cells called memory T- and B-lymphocytes. The main types of vaccine are:
2) modified-live (live-attenuated);
4) subunit (component), recombinant, polysaccharide, and
detail is that all, or nearly all, vaccine products contain what are known as adjuvants. An adjuvant is a substance added to a vaccine product to stimulate the immune response thereby, enhancing both the level and the duration of protection. Since 1990, there has been a revolution in our understanding of the immune system. We now know that there are specialized receptors on very specialized cells that present what I think of as items that identify the perpetrator to the immune system. Sort of like how a tracking dog utilizes an individual’s unique scent. In more scientific terms, these specialized cells are called dendritic cells and they possess pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) which recognize select proteins called antigens, or more specifically pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) on the invading pathogens. The PPRs function like switches that activate the dendritic cells which, in turn, activates other components in the immune system. Newly discovered molecules that target these receptors are being incorporated into adjuvants to regulate various components of the immune system. Although PRRs have only recently been discovered, it is now evident that many very effective killed and attenuated vaccines already had their own built-in adjuvant. We just didn’t know it! These discoveries have enabled vaccines producers to incorporate very specific components as adjuvants resulting in improved vaccine performance with fewer side effects.
By Colin Palmer, DVM
3) messenger RNA (mRNA);

Inactivated or heat inactivated, also known as killed vaccines and bacterins (another name for vaccine directed against a bacteria) represent the first generation in vaccine technology. These products contain whole forms of killed, disease causing bacteria or virus. Generally, inactivated vaccines do not confer as strong or as long-lasting immunity against the disease agent as other types of vaccines. A notable exception are the rabies virus vaccines. Inactivated vaccines are safe and do not cause disease. Many inactivated vaccines can now rival some of the more efficacious vaccine types largely due to advances in adjuvant technology.
Viral vector vaccines used a modified version of another virus to create the immune response. The vector virus does not cause disease; however, it will infect cells and create its own proteins as it replicates. One or more of these proteins will be the same as the proteins produced on the surface of the harmful virus, aptly named spike proteins. If the body encounters the harmful virus, it will recognize these spike proteins and will already have antibody protection to fight the disease.
In the past, all vaccines were administered into the muscle mass; however, many were proven effective when administered subcutaneously and labelled instructions followed suit. Very recently intranasal vaccines have been introduced for cattle. My next article will discuss routes of vaccine administration.
Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Modified-live (live-attenuated) vaccines use a form of the diseasecausing virus or bacteria (also called a bacterin, like the killed vaccine) that does not cause full-blown disease yet has a similar antigenic profile The virus is alive, therefore, it can still invade and replicate within the host for several days or even weeks before it is neutralized. This is the reason that attenuated vaccines create such a strong and long-lasting immunity. Attenuated vaccines can take a long time to develop and sometimes may cause just enough disease to be harmful to the recipient. For example, modified-live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) vaccines have traditionally not been recommended for use in pregnant animals because of the risk of abortion. Select products are now considered safe if used according to specific manufacturer recommendations. Mixing of sterile diluent with dried powder and the fragile nature of these vaccines require the product to be used within 1 or 2 hours of mixing are other disadvantages. Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines contain the genetic code for a select viral proteins that elicit a suitable immune response. Instead of using the whole virus, mRNA vaccines use a tiny piece of the genetic code of the virus which will then teach the host cells how to make a protein or a piece of a protein. Live viruses would normally take over host cells then use their own genetic code (RNA or DNA) to replicate themselves and in so doing create a number of proteins. By exposing the immune system to only a few select proteins the host can create memory T- and Bcells without risk of disease. The mRNA is destroyed after the new protein is made and the new protein tends to be made for a few weeks enabling stimulation of the immune system. Messenger RNA vaccines have been in existence for a few decades. Benefits include rapid production, improved storage and transport compared to other vaccine types, and no risk of causing disease in the patient. A very high level of safety has been advantageous in the fight against COVID-19. A disadvantage is relatively short-lived immune protection compared to having live virus replicating in the body.
Subunit, recombinant, polysaccharide, and conjugate vaccines all contain a piece or pieces of the disease agent that have been shown to elicit an immune response that is targeted at that piece of the organism. Part of a cell wall of a bacterium, perhaps 1 or more proteins, a sugar etc. They represent a purified form of an inactivated, whole-organism vaccine. Another name used for this class of vaccines is component vaccine. These vaccines are safe but generally do not confer long protection, therefore, regular booster shots are needed.
Toxoid vaccines use the toxin produced by select toxinproducing bacteria to create the immune response instead of the bacteria itself. Many cattle producers are familiar with blackleg (Clostridial) vaccines – those products providing protection against tetanus contain tetanus toxoid produced by Clostridium tetani. The clinical signs associated with tetanus are due to the toxin produced by the bacteria rather than the bacteria itself. By vaccinating using a toxoid vaccine the immune system will be directed towards neutralizing the toxin.
Modified-live and viral vector vaccines tend to confer longer periods of protection in recipients because the administered virus lives and replicates within the body for an extended period allowing continued stimulation of the immune system.
Multivalent and polyvalent are two terms often encountered in the vaccine literature and product labels. Essentially these terms mean the same thing – the vaccine product contains antigens from different strains of the same disease-causing organism; therefore, a broader range of immune protection will be produced. Most of the cattle vaccines available now are multi-disease or combination vaccines which means that they confer protection against several disease agents. Many of these vaccines often contain inactivated and modified live components within the same product.

Slaughter Cattle Price Cycle
In the fall, when between six and eight months of age calves are weaned from the cow. Calves are in most cases taken to a separate pen or holding area where they are usually fed
Depending on the feed and price situation producers will cull (reduce their herd size) based on anticipated prices. The bottom of the cattle market usually sees producers culling to reduce costs of feeding less valuable animals.
Cattle kept past their slaughter and processing prime still need to be fed and they are not putting on additional meat. They are in fact putting on fat. Fat is less desirable and will not earn the feedlot or producer more money to compensate for the feed and labour costs.
Some producers - if they have enough available cheap feedwill feed their calves over the winter and sell them, where they usually end up in feedlots for finishing (ready to butcher). Producers often do this because they believe holding onto their calves will earn them larger dollars as they sell into the market later and at a higher weight.
Pricewise cattle is said to be on a 10 to 12 year cycle for farmers and ranchers. It is driven by supply and demand plus also a biological factor.
The biological lag is the amount of time it takes breed a cow, have a calf and deliver that calf to the slaughter market.
How The Cattle Market Works
“MEGASCALE AGRIFOOD-PROCESSING FACILITIES IN CANADA HAVE BECOME COMMONPLACE AS THE RESULT OF TWO MAIN FACTORS: THE FIRST AND MOST OBVIOUS IS THE DRIVE FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY IN THE PURSUIT OF INCREASED PROFITABILITY,” JARED CARLBERG.
Calves are born on the farm and then raised on grass (in a pasture) as cow calf pairs.
Where's The Beef???
By Robert Thomas
Some time after weaning calves are either sold to feedlotsthrough an auction or directly - where the animal is put in pens where they are fed until they reach market weight at which time they are sold to the slaughter/processing plant.
The price producer’s receive for their cattle rises and falls with not just with demand but the speed at which prices encourage farmers to increase their herd size.
Todays Angus Advantag e 32
This is called the biological lag in the market.
Part Two In A Series
In a perfect marketplace supply and demand is said to determine prices.
hay and additionally chop (which is a combination of usually feed barley, oats and minerals) that is run through a grinder to better increase digestion and weight gain.
As consumers or industries demand a certain good or service the price of the good increases with demand. Additionally as the price of a good increases the number of that good produced also rises to a point where the supply exceeds
The same generally applies in the slaughter beef cattle market but because cattle are a living organism the market has a biological element attached to it.
Atdemand.thattime
Calf To Market
The majority of calves marketed from ranchers and farmers go through the same process.

The biological factor causes the slaughter cattle supply and thus the price to wander past demand highs.
Producers have surplus animals raised during higher priced times that come to market after a drop in consumer demand and the price they receive is lower than anticipated while raising the animal.

As discussed earlier, transportation or fuel, has the same weight in the CPI as food.
Todays Angus Advantag e 35
Overtime the increase in prices in the CPI basket is used by Statistics Canada to show what the inflation rate is.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI)
If you take a look at the CPI (in the chart below) food is weighted at just over 15 percent. While housing is the largest component of the CPI at the 30 percent mark. While clothing is between three and five percent over the three year period.

During June the CPI saw a decrease in the price of homes which had the effect of moderating the weighted CPI.
Part Three In A Series
For example a 20 percent price increase in the price of milk has less of an impact on the CPI than does a similar 20 percent increase in the price of fuel.
Prices and wages go up all of the time the problem is when inflation reaches a certain point it becomes excessive meaning consumers cannot afford the item and no longer buy it or they forego other items to purchase an item that has gone up in price.
What makes up the CPI or the basket of goods and the weight each item is given is determined by economists working for the federal government.
The CPI is weighted because the same rise in the price of certain items do not effect consumers as much as a price increase for other goods and services.
The CPI is often described as a weighted basket of goods the average consumer needs to purchase.
So the big three most people see as the essentials to lifefood shelter and clothing - are given a weight of 50 percent in the CPI.
For those who are unaware of what it is inflation is the increased price for goods and services.
The Consumer Price Index or CPI is a major economic indicator and it is widely referenced when it comes to inflation and the ability of consumers to purchase the goods and services they need to survive.
The weight of each item in the basket which makes up the CPI is derived from consumer habits in the Household Final Consumption Expenditure (HFCE). The HFCE data is combined with data obtained from third parties to see an overall consumer preference for variety of goods and then weights them before putting them into the CPI.
In the most recent CPI released by Statistics Canada the CPI in June 2022 compared to June 2021 saw an increase of 8.1 percent. If you removed the price of gasoline from the CPI the year over year increase is 6.5 percent which is higher than the 6.3 percent increase in May 2022 versus May 2021.
Recently the CPI or the inflation it measures has been impacted in two areas - fuel and food.
Although price increases are seen as bad a certain amount of inflation is good for the economy.
“ANY EVIDENCE WE’VE SEEN IS TO THE CONTRARY. IT’S PRETTY CLEAR WHO IS DOING WELL, AND THAT IS THE PACKERS,” MICHELLE WASYLYSHEN, SPOKESPERSON FOR THE RETAIL COUNCIL OF CANADA SPEAKING TO THE TORONTO STAR.
But despite this the CPI rose more than what economists and the Bank of Canada would like to see - a two percent target increase since 1995.
To lower inflation you can do one of two things.
Recent Developments
Where’s The Beef??? Inflation And Costs
Although milk may be good for you the amount of milk an individual consumes and its importance is less than buying fuel. Fuel such as gasoline is used more by consumers than milk so gasoline is weighted higher.
While over the same April 2021 to April 2022 year to year increase for live cattle increased by nine percent (see chart below).
Flood the market with more goods than consumers can buy (in practicality an impossibility) and allow supply to do it. Or you can reduce demand. You reduce demand by taking the means to buy goods - money - out of the system.
market information provided by the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture show the United States Department of Agriculture prices for cattle as stable year over year.
But the cost of Lethbridge barley - used to feed cattle in feedlots - has risen over 30 percent year over year.
Todays Angus Advantag e 36
How Does This Effect Consumers Buying Beef??
After one week we received no further answer from the Canadian Meat Council.
Thebeef.latest
Consumers are on average seeing their buying power eroded.
The problem if there are profits at the retail level who is earning them?

If you look at the CPI data while there was an increase in the CPI of 8.1 percent from June 2022 to June 2021 at the same time wages rose only 5.2 percent based upon the latest Labour Force Survey.
If you take a look at the price of food year over year the major increase has been in butter, edible oils and meat (most notably beef).
“Any evidence we’ve seen is to the contrary. It’s pretty clear who is doing well, and that is the packers,” Wasylyshen told the Toronto Star.
The problem for rancher/farmers and feedlot owners are the fixed inputs - feed and labour - they need to produce a pound of
MJ Independent was unable to contact JBS Canada for comment on this series of stories.
In Saskatchewan (see chart below) meat prices went up 11.3 percent from April 2021 to April 2022 while retail beef prices went up 17 percent in the same time period.

From March to April 2022 the retail price of beef increased 6 percent in the one month period.

MJ Independent was however able to get ahold of Cargill who referred us to the Canadian Meat Council who represents meat packers and processors, large and small.
After speaking to the media representative at the Canadian Meat Council, where we sought comment to hear their side of the story for a more rounded series of stories, their media rep said they were unable to answer the questions but someone who was away on holiday may be able to.
To reduce the money supply the Bank Of Canada sets its key lending rate - the rate it charges banks to borrow moneywhich results in the banks increasing their lending rates. As consumers are charged more to borrow they reassess purchases and on big ticket items - such as homes - the demand goes down and prices drop.
Seemingly the cattle prices are going up to match the demand and store prices.
In a July 7th Toronto Star article Michelle Wasylyshen, spokesperson for the Retail Council of Canada, which represents major grocery chains including Loblaw, Sobeys and Metro said retailers were not making windfall profits.

Calves may have everything from umbilical abscesses or hernias to chronic respiratory issues and you don’t want to turn anything out that has potential to die or need further treatment at pasture. With calves, think of the gain potential on pasture so implanting may be a definite option with commercial cattle.
Soon will be the time to get cattle ready for pasture and there are always several things we must consider and have in order before they go out. Some of these things are especially critical if they are going to a brand new pasture. Several things always enter my mind. Have the pastures been checked for everything from fence lines, to the potential for noxious weeds or other toxins such as old batteries from electric fencers. If there’s an old dump area or burrow pit on the premises or old yard sites with everything from garages with toxic compounds to open bored water wells. All could pose danger in the impending grazing season and are worth cleaning up. Also if grass has just started cattle will turn to consuming noxious weeds and other things they may not if the growth of grass is lush.
Any animals with open wounds need to be left until they have fully healed to avoid fly strike. Lumps, bumps such as abscesses or injuries should again be healed before going to pasture. Be cognizant of problems like weeping eyes, this might be the start of a cancerous eye and could get much much worse by the end of the grazing season. Lumps on the jaw may lead to lumpy jaw, attending to early may give much more favorable results than waiting until the condition becomes chronic and the jaw has deviated from the lumpy jaw making mastication almost impossible.
HERD HEALTH ON PASTURE
With fly control for the whole group there are several options readily available. From fly tags, to pour on products, to oilers that dispense insecticide. There is also a product which when fed mixed in with the minerals provides a larvicidal effect to the fly larvae in the dung patties. These products, either used individually or sometimes used in tandem, can do a great job at controlling lice as long as the timing is right. We want to apply product as ideal as possible keeping in mind resistance could be developing and most products are not residual so don’t stick around long. May be good with flies for example to wait until you see the higher numbers on the animal (we usually say 200 plus flies as the threshold). Watch the breeding bulls as they will have the highest levels generally. Even if you have oilers at pasture best to pulse medicate when the cattle are becoming infected. You want to always be cognizant of the environment when treating and try to keep the dung beetle population healthy as they also consume fly larvae in the cow patties.
Lots to think about before pasture but looking after these things will hopefully lead to a trouble free pasture season where cattle gain well, breed well with good conception rates, no bull issues and have lots of grass. Make sure cattle are well identified with Dangle tags, RFID tags and even brands if that is required. Many producers are incorporating dart guns in treatment at pasture. Make sure you are pretty confident in the diagnosis and consult with your veterinarian on which product is the most appropriate. There is no doubt treatment comes quicker and less stress on the cattle when a dart gun is employed. This is especially true if treating the herd bull. Lets hope this summer there is not the extreme temperatures where we need to worry about hyperthermia at pasture. Remember with the grass pastured low last year in most cases and the feed shortage over the winter, there will be a tendency to turn cattle out quicker so they will get into new growth of almost anything. Have a good surveillance of the pastures before turning cattle out is always a very wise move.
Todays Angus Advantag e 52
Before loading cattle for herding down the road one must give necessary vaccines for general health such as the clostridial diseases. Use a multivalent vaccine that covers as many of the clostridial organisms as you can. One never knows when decades old clostridial spores are consumed. Anthrax should be thought about the same way if it is in your area and just before turnout to pasture in Spring is the ideal time to vaccinate for these diseases. Calves need to be up to date in clostridial, histophilus and the respiratory pathogens for coverage. Vaccinate cows for clostridial and the reproductive pathogens especially IBR and BVD to protect against the main infectious causes of reproductive failure. Make sure you have the bulls covered as well and the best time to administer these is when they are handled for semen testing just before breeding and often coinciding with turnout to pasture.
It pays to do a very thorough scan of health before turning out to pasture. Keep in mind cattle are harder to observe, harder to catch and may need to travel well to water, mineral stations and traverse rugged terrain in some cases. They must be able to move well. Flies etc will be a problem later into the summer so best to have a plan to administer treatment or preventative measures in the heat of the summer when flies are at their worst. Make sure cattle are relatively free of internal parasites (worms) so they won’t contaminate pastures with worm eggs the minute they begin grazing. I would suggest pulling out pairs not worthy of going and take a little extra care with treatment and medical attention. This may include but not limited to bad udders (prone to mastitis), bad eyes (prone to pinkeye or cancer eye), thin cows prone to a variety of medical problems. Bad footed cattle or those lame are likely to worsen their condition and lame sore cattle don’t move well, lose weight and as a result don’t milk well for their calf. They need their feet attended to for sole abscesses, cracks, corns and a myriad of other problems. If chronically lame they may need to be left back as well.
VETS ADVICE...
If you find a dead cow, calf or bull I would suggest removing for an autopsy off site. Especially for anthrax or clostridial diseases, we don’t want the carcass opened exposing the area to numerous spores risking other cattle. Always think of the rest of the herd with contagious organisms.

Looking ahead, it can feel like there’s an overwhelming pace of “the next new thing,” Reiman says, but that’s why staying involved in the discussions can help cattlemen see what applies to their own business.

“I hope it’s going to be thought provoking,” he says. “We plan to bring different perspectives. Maybe we’ll even bring some perspectives that don’t agree or align with one another and bring them on the same show and have that conversation or debate, if you will. I think that’s really, really healthy.”
“I feel like there’s an Angus cow for every environment and every production scenario,” Spader says, noting that it can be traced back for generations. “This wasn’t something that has just happened here in the last little bit, but this has
“As we chart this future, there’s an awful lot of unknowns, and I think the bigger and broader perspective we get, the better decisions we’ll make,” says McCully, in the pre-launch segment that dropped last week.
“So, it’s the idea that we’ve got to keep after some of this stuff and keep learning and keep growing because if you’re not learning and growing, you’re behind,” Reiman says.
