The 4-H program’s hands on approach gives young people guidance, tools and encouragement then puts them in the driver’s seat to make great things happen. We are the beef members striving to bring good food to your table and working to be good stewards of the land and animals. You may think that we, the 4-H Beef Members, are in it for the money. The truth is if you ask one of us we will tell you, we LOVE the 4-H life, we LOVE the beef. We are here to set the standard for the way beef is raised in Alberta. WE PROMISE... each and every day, 4-H beef is produced and delivered with pride and tradition. As exceptional as the land on which it is raised, 4-H beef is excellence without compromise. 4-H members have the will and the commitment to get it done right. Living our “Learn to do by doing” motto, a lot of hard work has gone into preparing our animals for the up and coming show days. Why 4-H Beef The 4-H program guides our members to select quality livestock and maintain consistent nutrition, health and daily care. There is a need to start with a good animal and maximize its potential so then you are left with quality Canadian 4-H beef for the consumer. The 4-H Beef Project and its many supporters have helped send thousands of our youth away to Universities, Colleges and Trade Schools. They have returned to become our business leaders, teachers, caregivers, farmers, mechanics, welders and the list goes on. One thing is for sure, when you purchase a 4-H steer you are not just investing in a child’s future, but also in the future of this community. If you choose to support your local 4-H members at their sale please be aware that there are options available when purchasing a St. Paul 4-H beef member’s steer. 1. After the sale all steers are available to go back to the member’s home until slaughter arrangements have been made. 2. The St. Paul Beef Club has available spots booked the week of June 10 at Diamond 7 Meats in Lloydminster. Members will arrange delivery of their animal to these destinations. 3. Buyer can take the purchased animal home and make their own arrangements. This year’s sale will be conducted by Miles Wowk Auctioneering.
Progress in the Beef Industry Producing cattle has changed a lot in the last few decades in Canada. Organizations such as the Alberta Beef Producers, Canadian Cattlemen’s Association and the many Purebred Breed Associations By Roy Lewis DVM provide leadership and help guide where the industry is headed. Work consulting to our producers by professionals such as nutritionists, veterinarians and the pharmaceutical industry add to the production of wholesome, nutritious, affordable and safe beef in Canada. The 4-H clubs and their members learn and act on the same methods and management strategies that have made producers successful in producing cattle. As a former 4-H member myself, the motto of “Learn to do by doing” is never truer than in the 4-H beef projects. With improved genetics, cross breeding and selection for traits such as calving ease, longevity, milking ability and carcass characteristics, more quality beef is produced with less resources. An environmentally good story. Anything that affects health affects growth which is why many of the 4-H calves come from farm raised stock where true preconditioning is practiced, meaning calves are immunized before weaning and then weaned with a minimum amount of stress. The increased usage of vaccines for respiratory disease and other common cattle diseases such as clostridial diseases are routinely practiced and this helps insure minimal
usage of antibiotics in cattle production. Please note that there are no antibiotic residues in meat. Antibiotics used are approved for cattle and have recognized meat withdrawals and vaccines have withdrawals as well which cattle producers and 4-H members closely follow. Technically then all the meat has no antibiotics in it. Trying to raise cattle totally without antibiotics becomes an animal welfare issue. Much like people, if they have a severe pneumonia and it is caused by a bacteria, we need to give antibiotics or they will die. All MIAs, meaning medically important antimicrobials, are under the supervision of veterinarians. This is to insure producers know when and for what specific antibiotics are used. The dosage route of administration and withdrawals are then gone over. At the same time vaccination protocols are reviewed to help insure healthy cattle reproduced. The beef code of practice which we all live by is based in large part on animal welfare. Cattle are quite domesticated but will not be as quiet as the halter broke calves you see in the show ring. Hard work and patience and technique lead to a well halter broke calf. You should, as consumers, be very confident of the quality, safety and stress-free conditions cattle are raised on. This meat protein will continue to be in high demand and the next generation of cattle producers, including former 4-H members, will help insure this. There is great promise to the cattle industry in the years ahead to help feed the world with this high-quality meat protein.

I am also in the heifer and cow/calf projects. 4-H has been and will always be a tradition that has shaped my family and I to be the people we are today. Both in the show ring and throughout the years I have learned many things that I will use throughout my lifetime. Perspective, maturity, independence, patience are all characteristics that I have adopted or developed throughout my years of being a 4-H member. Initial Weight: 864 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1280 lbs. Hello, my name is Christian Lavoie and this is my fourth year in 4-H. I decided to name my steer “Triple Eh” in honour of the Canadian beef industry. Some of his nice traits are deepness and muscle. I really enjoy spending time on the farm, so much so that I plan to pursue this career in the future. Last year was a very special year for me because my buyer, Agland, generously donated my steer to Haying in the 30’s. I was invited by the members of the foundation to help prepare the meat for their Saturday night roast supper. Once again, I would like to thank Agland for buying my steer last year. If you are craving some “Triple Eh” steaks, my steer is perfect for your needs and your freezer.

Initial Weight: 829 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1255 lbs. I am fortunate enough to be a part of the 4-H program and the beef project with the St. Paul 4-H Multi Club. My name is Addison Graling and I am 12 years old. This is my third year as a 4-H member, but I was previously a member in the Cleaver 4-H program for two years giving me experience in 4-H for a total of five years. I am the youngest in my family and I look up to my older siblings, Denver and Spencer. Like my brother Spencer, I enjoy the Public Speaking part of 4-H and I also have the gift of gab. I love going to 4-H camps and meeting new people. My steer’s name is “Eeyore” and he is a Simmental Cross. Besides working with my steer “Eeyore”, I enjoy hanging out with my friends, playing hockey, baseball, curling and participating in school sports. Initial Weight: 832 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1330 lbs. Hello, my name is Tyson Kotowich and this is my third year in 4-H. I have a passion for the outdoors which includes dirt biking, hunting, fishing, skidooing and of course driving farm equipment. My two favorite pieces to operate are the trac-hoe and of course our quad trac pulling the grain cart during harvest. My Hereford Simmental steer, who’s call name is “Maverick”, is sure to be the leader of the pack on show day. He is a true powerhouse gaining at a rate of 3.7 lbs per day, he is jammed packed with muscle on a moderate frame. He is sure to impress you as he carries himself very well. Thank you to all the people that support 4-H, especially my previous buyers, Wozniak Bulk Fuels Sales and Rocky Mountain Equipment. A very special Thank You to my sister Brooke who is now helping me finish my project. Unfortunately because of a recent accident, I am now sporting a cast on my leg. Mercedes Trefenanko Sale Order: 15
Initial Weight: 847 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1155 lbs. Hi, my name is Mercedes Trefenanko and I am 12 years old. This is my fourth year in 4-H. I am an active member in the beef, heifer and cow calf projects; all of my projects are Simmental Cross. My steer this year has been given the title of “Big Mac.” Mac is a not so energetic steer; he is calm, quiet and a little bit stubborn. My heifer’s name is “Izzy” and my cow’s name is “Diana.” In our 4-H club I am the Beef Project Historian and the Multi Club Reporter. 4-H has boosted my confidence and public speaking ability, it has also taught me teamwork, leadership and decision making. This year I competed at the Club, District and Regional Communication events with my presentation on outer space. Other activities I enjoy are basketball, soccer, hockey and Ukrainian dancing. In the summer I am barely found inside. I am outside, camping or hanging out with family, most of the time it is all three. A big THANK-YOU to Xtreme Oilfield Technology for purchasing my 2018 steer “Charlie Brown the 2nd.” I would also like to thank B & R Eckels for purchasing my previous two steers. Ethan Yaremko Sale Order: 17
Initial Weight: 966 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1340 lbs. Hello, my name is Ethan Yaremko. This is my second year in 4-H and I am 11 years old. This year I am in the beef, sheep and pheasant projects. Last year I won Grand Champion Steer and Grand Champion Market Lamb. I had a really good first year. My steer’s name this year is “Fearless” and he is a full brother to my steer from last year. I have a heifer named “Ferret 50 Supercomp.” During the summer I like to go tubing, kneeboarding, fishing and I like to play with my cousins. In the winter I like to curl, play hockey and hunt sparrows when I am not helping with chores or playing with the goats. If you want a freezer full of great meat, ask me. Initial Weight: 874 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1090 lbs. Hi, my name is Courtney Werstiuk and I am 13 years old. This is my third year as a member of the St. Paul 4-H Multi Club. I am involved in the market beef and beef breeding projects. My black Angus steer this year is named “Black Jack.” He is a good natured animal, with large muscle content and a well-balanced overall appearance. I also have a black Angus heifer project named “Priscilla.” I had the opportunity to attend the Western Canadian Judging Competition at Lakeland College in November and it was an excellent experience. Being a part of 4-H has allowed me to learn through hands-on experiences, attain new skills and develop many lifelong friendships. I am involved in many other activities such as school sports, Ukrainian dancing and competitive softball. Kyle Yaremko Sale Order: 24
Initial Weight: 877 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1315 lbs. Hello, my name is Kyle Yaremko. I am 15 years old and this is my seventh year in 4-H. I am the President of the Multi Club and the Vice President of the Beef Project. I have a Simmental Cross steer named “Filet”, a Simmental heifer and a two year and three year old cow/calf in the beef project. I am also in the sheep and pheasant projects. I enjoy judging and all the skills components of the projects I am in. This past summer I was Grand Champion Intermediate Stockmans Judge and was the Reserve Champion Intermediate Aggregate at Summer Synergy. I also earned the 4-H Alberta Provincial Sheep Show Aggregate Award that I am very proud of. I work hard on the farm and with my projects throughout the year. Outside of 4-H I just finished my twelfth year in Ukrainian dancing and I am on the curling team. This summer I want to go to CIT and counsel some 4-H camps. My steer is on target and is long spined, deep bodied and wide topped. Initial Weight: 769 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1225 lbs. My name is Rebecca Kotowich and this is my seventh year in 4-H. I am 15 years olds and a Grade 10 student at St. Paul Regional High School. This year, I am involved in the steer and pheasant projects. Besides 4-H, I like to eat sushi, be outdoors and spend time with family and friends. This past April, I had the opportunity to represent the Northeast Region at the provincial communications event with my presentation. Being a member of 4-H has taught me many valuable skills such as teamwork, leadership and the art of giving back to our community. My current steer is a red Simmental Hereford Cross named “Kash” that will surely catch your eye on show day. He is a powerful showy steer, weighing 1225 lbs. at our mini show with an average gain of 3.5 pounds a day. If you are looking for some GREAT Alberta beef, my steer will be the perfect fit! Ashlynn Trefenanko Sale Order: 30
Initial Weight: 950 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1345 lbs. Hello, my name is Ashlynn Trefenanko and this is my sixth year as an active member of the St. Paul 4-H Multi Club. I am the Vice President and the Historian of the Multi Club. I am a member of the beef project with my market steer “Flash”, yearling heifer “Frappé” and two year old cow calf project “Clarice” and “Gunner.” “Flash” is a Simmental Cross steer that exhibits qualities such as length, thickness and depth in body. Being a 4-H member has taught me teamwork, leadership and having the confidence to speak in front of a crowd. This 4-H year I had the opportunity to public speak at the District and Regional competitions. I love 4-H because it has provided me with many new opportunities like attending the Western Canadian Judging Competition and 4-H camp. This past year I presented an A. Trefenanko 4-H Scholarship to Megan Kotowich, I created this scholarship from the sale of my 2014 steer. The biggest highlight of this past year was winning gold at SPAA Cross Country Running and also winning the SPAA championship banners for Volleyball, Basketball and Cross Country as a Glen Avon Panther. I have also been part of the St. Paul Ukrainian Dance Club for nine years. This is my eighth year in 4-H and my steer is a big Simmental; I named him “Moody.” I love the 4-H program and all that it has to offer! In November I got to experience a trip to Toronto for the 2018 4-H National Members Forum. I learned about a lot of different 4-H and agricultural opportunities! Programs like these have taught me so much: leadership, communication and teamwork. I truly feel honoured to be a part of such an amazing program! In my spare time, I enjoy curling and running. Initial Weight: 836 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1310 lbs. My name is Kristina Kotowich and this is my ninth and final year of 4-H. Over the course of nine years 4-H has taught me many skills and given me memories that I will forever cherish. Leadership, communication skills and determination are just a few of the qualities that I will take away from 4-H. This year I’m involved in the steer, heifer, cow calf and pheasant projects. My steer, “Cooper”, is a black Simmental Cross. He is a deep, thick, muscular steer who is guaranteed to produce some quality cuts. I have had a very eventful year. It has been a privilege to make it to provincial public speaking where I placed third. I was also able to attend curling and cross country provincials with my high school. Besides extracurricular activities and my part-time job as a care aide, I have been applying for post-secondary school and have recently been accepted into Red Deer College where I will be attending the nursing program in the fall. I would like to thank Bill Machura from Top Yield and Top Grow for purchasing my steer last year, as well as all my buyers and bidders throughout my 4-H career. Initial Weight: 899 lbs. ● March 29 weight: 1240 lbs. Hi! My name is Emily Yaremko. I’m 13 and this is my fifth year in 4-H. My beef projects are a market steer named “Flint”, a heifer named “Forjas” and a two year old named “Echo” with her calf “Mouse.” This year I am trying the Carcass Calf project and am excited to be able to compare and learn about what he looks like on the rail versus on the hoof. I am also in the sheep and pheasant projects. I take part in my club by being Secretary of the Multi Club and Sheep Project. I went to the 4-H Provincial Sheep Show and Summer Synergy and won a scholarship and got to go on the grandstand at the Calgary Stampede. I am in Ukrainian dance, curling, badminton, cross country running and am trying the RCMP Road Race this year and I participate in my school’s Community Leadership Team. Thankyou to Location Cats for buying my steer last year. “Flint” is really picking up and looking good. I am I excited to see how he will develop from now until show day. I joined the beef club because my brother was in the beef project and I thought it was interesting. Since it was my first year, I picked a steer that was the calmest and most tame. I decided to name him “Big Mac” because he is big and he has the same type of hair as Ronald McDonald. As you can see I like playing hockey and surfing with my family.
