Beef Project
Learn to do by Doing
No matter how you slice it, beef is a staple on all menus across Canada. By choosing 4-H beef you are supporting your rural neighbours and Canada’s economy. We are the beef members striving to bring good food to your table and working to be good stewards of the land and animals. WE PROMISE... each and everyday, 4-H beef is produced and delivered with pride and tradition. As exceptional as the land on which it is raised, 4-H beef is excellence without compromise. We will do what is right. Our 2018 4-H Beef Project consists of 14 steer members and 9 Heifer & Cow/ Calf members. Raising a beef for the show ring is a long, time consuming project involving many hours of feeding, grooming, exercising and halter training. Every aspect of the project is vital to having success in the ring! We would like to sincerely THANK all of our sponsors, buyers, local community supporters, leaders and families. You are the cornerstones of our 4-H program! Please come out and support our members at their Achievement Day as well as the St. Paul District Show and Sale.

Carcass What is the value of 4-H beef to you?
The 4-H program guides our members to select quality livestock and maintain consistent nutrition, health and daily care. There is a need to start with a good animal and maximize its potential so then you are left with quality Canadian 4-H beef for the consumer. The 4-H Beef Project and its many supporters have helped send thousands of our youth away to Universities, Colleges and Trade Schools. They have returned to become our business leaders, teachers, caregivers, farmers, mechanics, welders and the list goes on. One thing is for sure, when you purchase a 4-H steer you are not just investing in a child’s future, but also in the future of this community.

A market steer on average weighs 1400 lbs. Ideally an average yield of 62% or more is desired. This results in approximately 600 lbs. of take home beef. If you were to buy this beef from a grocery store at these prices it would cost $5542.00. 385 lbs. of roasts & steaks 215 lbs. of ground beef and stew meat
Average price $11.10/lb. = Average price $5.90/lb. = TOTAL:
$4273.50 $1268.50 $5542.00
Average price of a 4-H Steer: $3.00 X 1400 lbs. = Average cut and wrap = TOTAL:
$4200.00 $750.00 $4950.00
$5542.00 - $4950.00 = $592.00
You can save $592.00 by purchasing a 4-H steer instead of buying it at a grocery store and know that it is home grown. PLEASE NOTE: These prices, weights and averages may vary due to market fluctuations, weather conditions and possibly even the breed of an animal can largely influence the frame size and cut ability. If you choose to support your local 4-H members at their sale please be aware that there are options available when purchasing a St. Paul 4-H beef member’s steer. 1. After the sale all steers are available to go back to the member’s home until slaughter arrangements have been made. 2. The St. Paul Beef Club has available spots booked the week of June 11 at Diamond 7 Meats in Lloydminster and Bob’s Custom Cuts in Bonnyville. Members will arrange delivery of their animal to these destinations. 3. Buyer can take the purchased animal home and make their own arrangements. This year’s sale will be conducted by Myles Wowk Auctioneering.

Brooke Kotowich
Jesse
Sale Order: 42 When it comes to life, things are not always easy and what you have today may not be in your hands tomorrow. Hi, my name is Brooke Kotowich and this is my seventh year being a 4-H member. I am involved in the steer, heifer and cow/calf projects. 4-H has been a big part of my family. Without 4-H I truly believe I would never have had the opportunity to experience some of the many things that it has shown and given me. Unfortunately in March I lost my steer named Jesse. He was one of a kind and caught my eye the day he was born with his mild, playful manner. I will now be finishing my steer project off with a replacement steer named Double Dipper. ‘Double Dipper’ is a very complete, black Simmental Angus cross steer exhibiting a ton of muscle. Having to deal with the loss of my calf, I now know the feeling of what it is like to experience hardship and how to accept and deal with it. ‘Hard times are often a blessing in disguise. No matter how much it hurts, hold your head high and keep going’. This is an important lesson to remember when you are having a tough day, rough week or a crappy year. Your past was never a mistake if you learned from it, so take all the experiences and lessons and place them in a box labeled ‘THANK YOU’. I would like to thank my last year’s buyer, Dr. Trevor Pilipchuk from Lakeland Family Eyecare for purchasing my steer as well as all of our friends and sponsors of our Beef Project!

Nathan Barlad
Sale Order: 6 My name is Nathan Barlad and this is my first year as a member of the St. Paul 4-H Multi-Club. I am a Grade 12 student at the St. Paul Regional High School and have been accepted into the University of Alberta as a student in the Bachelor of Science program with a career goal of becoming a dentist. I joined 4-H in part to expand my skills and interests while also being more involved in my community. Being a member of the 4-H program has taught me many important life skills in my short time with the club, such as public speaking, teamwork and selflessness. My steer, Water Boy, is a Simmental cross with an amazing coat of deep red hair. Undeniably he will be one of the thickest steers in the barn on show day and I guarantee that this steer’s cut ability will be amazing. If you are looking for a carcass with lots of muscle and marbling, this is the guy you will want. Thank you to Kotowich Evergreen Farms for helping me become a part of the 4-H program and all your support towards my future success.
“Work hard in silence, let your success be your noise.”

Megan Kotowich
Sale Order: 41 My name is Megan Kotowich and this is my ninth and final year as a member of the St. Paul 4-H Multi-Club. Throughout my 4-H years I have been an active member of the steer, heifer, cow/calf, small engines and foods projects. In June I will be graduating with honors and I am currently studying towards receiving my gel nail as well as eyelash extension certificates. In September I will be moving to the big city as I have been accepted into the hairstyling program at Marvel College. Being a member of the St. Paul 4-H Multi-Club has embedded myself with skills that I will value for the rest of my life. Volunteerism, selflessness, pride and commitment are just a few of the qualities that the 4-H program provides to members and their families. I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to become a part of a 4-H club in their community to do so. This year my market steer, Sunny Boy, is a Simmental Hereford cross. He is a very attractive, tan colored steer who will not be shy on the scale come show day. Gaining at a rate of 3.6 lbs per day, Sunny Boy carries a frame longer than a pickup truck and I guarantee he will be finished on show day. I would like to THANK the amazing buyers who have purchased my steers throughout my 4-H career as without them, the market steer project would not be complete: W. Dechaine Ent., Northern Lights Welding, Wozniak Bulk Fuel Sales, Nilsson Bros., Top Yield & Top Grow Fertilizers and last year’s buyer Rocky Mountain Equipment-Vegreville. Lastly, THANK YOU to all the leaders, sponsors, volunteers and my family for making 4-H such an amazing experience for me!

This year I am very proud to offer you a very complete, deep, cherry red market steer named “T-bone”! I believe he is a steer that carries many great qualities such as length, thickness, depth of body and he will be hard to miss on show day because of his attractive eye appeal. If you are looking to support possible future farmers, please come out and support my fellow 4-H members and I at our Show & Sale. Thank-you to Farm and Business Tax Solutions for buying my steer “Dudley” from last year. My steer Earl is growing great and is long bodied. Earl will be nicely finished for the show.
