Welcome to the Annual Square D Polled Herefords Production Sale, on Monday, October 18, 2021, at the ranch, Langbank, Saskatchewan. This anchor event for the “Sweepsteaks” weekend offers an exciting offering of high-quality Polled Herefords. “Where quality runs generations deep” is the statement that truly summarizes this proven breeding program. This multi-generational family have been supplying seedstock for both the commercial and purebred sectors for many decades and the cow herd is built on predictable families. Not pampered, this cow herd is grass run and have been selected for key maternal traits… awesome udders, plenty of milk and highly fertile. As you browse through this catalogue, check out the birth, milk, and total maternal numbers!

Anytime of the year, Jim can supply you a bull to get your cows bred but each year they select a group of herd sire prospects from a cross-section of the calf crop.

These bull calves are March born, have friendly birth weights, clean sheaths, and tons of muscle shape… ideal to move any type of breeding program forward.

The females are front pasture material… they feature 2021 prospects ideal for juniors of any age; bred heifers and a group of two-year-old pairs. No doubt, the addition of “Ridge” to the bull battery will be a feature as his service, embryos and semen packages sell.

njw 139c 103c ridge 254g Once we were able to make a deal with Ned and Jan Ward on the Canadian semen rights on Ridge we wanted to flush one of our top females, whose cow family have been heavy hitters at Square-D to him. Square-D Kitty 465E is the result of the mating of two of our most successful cow families. Her mother has had 13 natural calves, we have two daughters in our herd with another at side who is destined for our replacement pen, and we have used a couple of her sons. Square-D John Wayne 465Y, who also did a good job at Brosts, and Square-D Mr. Beef 465A, owned with Redline Livestock and McMurray Cattle. 465E’s sire Century has done a phenomenal job here at Square-D giving us a new generation of replacement females and Kitty’s sons are the first to sell out of the yard. Century’s mom has calves registered around the world and 26 direct sons and daughters are registered in Canada. Kitty’s, Super Duty dam, Square-D Erin 760U is still producing at 13 years of age. 465E has fast become one of our top producers.

Her first calf was last year’s high selling bred heifer, and her second calf was selected by Hereford Girlz out of last year’s sale after seeing his dam, 465E on display. The sire of these embryo’s, NJW 139C 103C RIDGE 254G, our newest herd sire addition, Lot 43.

We implanted several embryos from this mating and because this was such a successful flush, giving us a high number of exportable, EU qualified embryos we are able to share this opportunity with you. We are selling 3 lots of 4 embryos and all are qualified for export including the EU. Embryos are stored at Bow Valley Genetics. Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs.

We were first attracted to Ridge from a picture in the NJW sale catalogue. I asked Jan who this bull was, Jan described him a bit more but stressed that he was not for sale. That’s when we started to do more of a deep dive on Ridge’s young mother and her production record. She has all the qualities that we want in our herd sire’s dam and 254G is not her first son to be used in the NJW herd. Ridge checks all the boxes for us; a mother with a great udder who produces her heart out; calving ease with a 78 lb birth weight; weaning weight 712 lbs. which gave him a WW index of 110 in the NJW herd; yearling index of 110 with a yearling weight of 1221 lbs. 254’s carcass scans are equally impressive, adj rib-eye 12.84 and an adj marbling of 3.91. To top it off he is homozygous polled, dark red to the ground, with pigment on both eyes all wrapped up with and EPD profile of CE +3.8, BW +2.0, WW +58.4, YW +95.6, M +37.5, TM +66. A herd sire of the future, with exceptional eye appeal and balance.

This convinced us to pursue 254G, seeing we weren’t able to buy pasture rights, we bought the Canadian semen rights along with Wascana Cattle Co. and Kootenay Polled Herefords.

We thought that our production sale would be a good way to introduce you to 254G, by offering services or embryos from one of our top cow families and a limited semen offering. Ridge has caused some excitement in the market when a pregnant recip carrying an embryo sired by 254G sold for $16,000 at the 2021 Oklahoma sale, and then in the recent NJW sale all the fall bred heifers carried his service and averaged over $10,750.

The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final.

Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.

CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Angus Association unless otherwise stated. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.

PEDIGREE ESTIMATES: Pedigree Estimates (PE) are created on the projected mating of the animal’s sire and dam based on averages of the two, creating estimated values that do not hold the same accuracy of actual EPDs issued from the association and should be used as such.

HEALTH: All animals in the sale have met all necessary health requirements.
