Welcome to the 2022 edition of Square D Polled Herefords Production Sale on October 17, 2022, at the Ranch, Langbank, Saskatchewan. This annual event anchors the Saskatchewan Sweep “Steaks” weekend in Southeastern Saskatchewan. Penned “Where quality runs Generations Deep” is very fitting for this multi-generational Hereford Family. The program is based on prolific cow families developed over decades with an aim of calving ease combined with high maternal values and always keeping per formance in scope. The Square D program is based on the requirements of their many repeat customers and the cattle are ranch raised as that of their customers.

A Ridge 254G son out of a young cow that we purchased from the McMurry’s in Montana. Her first calf, an NJW Endure daughter topped our 2020 sale, selling to Stephen Knutson. His dam is a big bodied, feminine daughter of Square-D Mr. Beef 465A. The Ridge calves have proven to be consistent, attractive, and easy calvers. We are looking forward to watching them develop. Archer is another top Ridge 254G son out of a Century daughter. His dam is out of a proven, long line of females in the Square D herd. The first set of Ridge calves are just as we had hoped, his sons are very muscular in shape, smooth made and calve like a dream, they will produce females that will be outstanding herd builders for years to come. The bull calves featured in our sale are our top bull calves, and the only bull calves to be sold at auction. Our remaining bulls will sell out of the yard by private treaty. Mighty Max 69B has done a great job at Square D, giving us females with beautiful udders, that raise big strapping calves. The 696 cow is a Century 957B daughter, with great udder suspension, teat size, and over all conformation. 686K is smooth made, with extra top and quarter expression, just like his sire Mighty Max 69B. These Ridge calves have turned out above our expectations. Born easy, with early growth. Check out the shape of this calf and the size of his testicles. We had a hard time choosing which heifer calf was the better on to consign to the sale. We decided it was best to offer as choice so that the buyer could make that determination. We were fortunate to get enough embryos last year to have calves this spring, implant more in June 2022 and still have a few to sell. We were first attracted to Ridge from a picture in the NJW sale catalogue. I asked Jan who this bull was, Jan described him a bit more but stressed that he was not for sale. That’s when we started to do more of a deep dive on Ridge’s mother and her production record. She has all the qualities that we want in our herd sire’s dam and 254G is not her first son to be used in the NJW herd. Ridge checks all the boxes for us; a mother with a great udder who produces her heart out; calving ease with a 78 lb birth weight; weaning weight 712 lbs. which gave him a WW index of 110 in the NJW herd; yearling index of 110 with a yearling weight of 1221 lbs. 254’s carcass scans are equally impressive, adj rib-eye 12.84 and an adj marbling of 3.91. To top it off he is homozygous polled, dark red to the ground, with pigment on both eyes all wrapped up with and EPD profile of CE +3.8, BW +2.0, WW +58.4, YW +95.6, M +37.5, TM +66. A herd sire of the future, with exceptional eye appeal and balance. This convinced us to pursue 254G, seeing we weren’t able to buy pasture rights, we bought the Canadian semen rights along with Wascana Cattle Co. and Kootenay Polled Herefords. We thought that our production sale would be a good way to introduce you to 254G, by offering services or embryos from one of our top cow families and a limited semen offering. Ridge has caused some excitement in the market when a pregnant recip carrying an embryo sired by 254G sold for $16,000 at the 2021 Oklahoma sale, and then in the recent NJW sale all the fall bred heifers carried his service and averaged over $10,750. Ridge is a moderate framed bull with extra mass and muscle, and has the ability to stay in shape while breeding and maintain great form and presence.
