SIMMENTAL AND RED ANGUS ARE AN IDEAL COMBO FOR ONTARIO PRODUCER Ontario farmer Brandon Ernest has spent a good part of the past 18 years developing both a top-quality cross-bred Simmental /Red Angus beef herd, as well as raising purebred Simmental cattle that not only produce high performing steers for the beef market, but excellent replacement heifers for his own operation and are sought after by other producers as well. Using both AI breeding as well as natural service herd sires, Ernest along with his wife Ashley Fairminer own and operate Haddie Simmentals near Walkerton. They have focused on improved genetics that enhance key maternal traits such as good udders and high milk production as well as excellent rates of gain, good feet and legs. Their breeding management not only produces a good-looking herd of commercial red cattle with white blazes on their faces that they are proud of but also earned them recognition as Ontario Simmental Association Commercial Breeder of the Year for 2025.
“
We always look to use the best genetics to improve the quality of our herd,
“
says Ernest. “Over the summer we look over the herd carefully and select those heifer calves we feel will make the best replacements and then sort those cow-calf pairs onto good quality feed in September. From that group we select the ones to be kept for our own replacements as well as those that will be sold as bred heifers the following year. The Simmental genetics have worked well with Red Angus to produce quality cattle with more pounds of beef. “ Brandon and Ashley are the first generation on the farm just north of the town of Walkerton, in Bruce County, about 50 km east of Lake Huron. Starting with rented land in 2008 they soon after bought their first 100 acres and today are farming about 600 acres, with a fairly even 200-acre split between pasture, hayland and cash crops that includes corn, soybeans and winter wheat. The couple has a family of four children, Adelynn, 13, Cora 11, Jace 3 and Max 1. “When we first started with beef cattle we were raising Red Angus,” says Ernest, who grew up on a beef farm as well. “It is an excellent beef breed but we also wanted cattle with a bit more size. And Simmental really fit so well in a cross-breeding program. They have the size and performance as well as excellent maternal traits. They work well with the carcass quality and efficiency of Red Angus.” Today Haddie Simmentals includes a total herd of about 140 head, of which 100 are commercial cross-bred SimAngus and 40 are pure bred Full Blood Simmental. “When we first started we were breeding Red Angus females to Simmental bulls,” says Ernest. “Now we have developed a herd of SimAngus crossbred cows that are bred to full blood Simmental bulls.” As the herd has grown and matured over the years, Ernest is looking to expand the operation to about 200 head in the near future. The calendar year begins with the purebred herd calving in January and February, while the commercial cattle calve in March and April. It is a fairly

typical beef operation as found in many parts of Eastern Canada, with the herd wintered in a loose housing barn usually from mid- to late November until late April or early May. “We have a lot of moisture which comes off the Great Lakes,” says Ernest. “We have cold spells, but also the winter can be quite wet so if the cattle weren’t inside they would be walking in mud.” The loose housing barn is well bedded with chopped corn stover topped with wheat straw, with cattle fed a foragebased winter ration of alfalfa hay. While he and Ashley are both on duty for the calving season, one valuable bit of technology which has made monitoring the herd more manageable is the use of cameras in the barn. “We have several cameras in the barn so we can watch the whole herd from different angles,” says Ernest. “During calving season one of us will get up every couple hours and check the camera feed on the computer and we are able to see if anyone is calving or if they might need some assistance. We don’t have to get dressed walk out in a snowstorm to check cattle. If everything is under control we can go back to bed. The camera feed also comes through to our cell phones so during the day if we are away or in town we can check the herd as well. The herd does a good job of calving without much assistance but if it is needed we can easily see what’s going on and help as needed.”
into the bloodstream. It mimicks a functional corpus luteum gland and prevents the animal from coming into heat. Depending on the specific protocol being followed, the device is removed after a few days. The sudden drop in progesterone triggers follicular development, leading to synchronized estrus or timed artificial insemination (TAI).) Ernest says with the synchronized AI resulting in about a 75 per cent conception rate, the AI breeding is followed up with the same group of females being exposed to a cleanup bull. “Between the AI procedure and then the cleanup bull that will breed the remaining females at the next 21-day interval we can be fairly accurate on the calving dates for this group of cattle,” says Ernest. “That’s good information during our calving season, but some of these females will also be sold as replacement heifers so we can provide the buyers with pretty accurate information on when the cattle will calve.” The herd will remain in their respective breeding groups on pasture which is blend of tame grasses and legumes until bulls are removed in August. Over the summer Ernest evaluates calves on pasture and selects about 40 to 50 heifer calves as potential replacement candidates.
The breeding program is geared so first calf heifers are delivering calves in the 85 pound birthweight range, while mature cows can easily deliver calves in the 100 pound birthweight range. While the loose housing barn is comfortable, on winter days with really miserable weather they can also move calves as needed into a heated workshop nearby the barn. Heated by a boiler, it has heated flooring which can quickly take the chill off newborn calves. And when not used as a backup nursery, most of the year the shop is a great facility for storage and maintenance of machinery. As the season advances after calving, cattle are moved out to pasture in May. The pasture is roughly divided into 50 acre parcels, with the herd divided into different groups for breeding purposes. For breeding season, they select about 40 head of purebred cattle and commercial heifers to be bred by AI followed by a cleanup bull as needed. “We use CIDR Synch technology to synchronize the heat cycle of these cattle,” says Ernest. (CIDR which stands for Controlled Internal Drug Release involves inserting a T-shaped silicone device into the vagina of the cows and heifers that releases progesterone
With the Winter Wheat harvested in late July, about 80 acres is immediately reseeded to a cover crop blend including oats, peas and turnips. By late August that cover crop is ready for grazing. “In late August we will move the 40 to 50 cow-calf pairs with heifer calves most likely to be kept as replacements on to the cover crop grazing,” says Ernest. “It’s about 80 acres of good quality feed, which we also cross fence with a moveable electric fence, to better manage grazing over the next few weeks.” While the Walkerton area usually has pretty good moisture for the growing season, by late summer pasture growth and quality has slowed down. “Moving those 50 pairs on cover crops makes more room on pasture for the remainder of the herd,” he says. All cattle remain on pasture until about the third week of October, when calves are weaned. The calves being saved for replacement heifers are brought home on put on feed, while the remaining heifers and steers are marked at the nearby Keady Livestock Auction.
Ernest. The cows will remain on pasture usually until mid to late November when they are brought to the loose housing barn for the winter. The farm plans on taking three cuts of alfalfa hay for winter feeding — second week of June, mid-July and early September. The winter wheat is harvested in mid-July, with straw baled for bedding. As corn is harvested, cobs are removed leaving standing stover. “Then we come back with a machine called the Loftness stalk chopper that cuts down and mulches the stover and places it in a windrow that we come along and bale,” says Ernest. “This chopped stover makes excellent bedding in the barn as well as yard, providing cows with good footing on the concrete. We then can cover the stover with winter wheat straw which keeps cows dry and comfortable. “ The replacement heifers are fed over winter and bred the following spring. The purebred heifers will be retained to expand the purebred herd, while the cross-bred heifers will be sold as replacements at the fall Top Cut Sale at the Maple Hill Livestock Auction east of Walkerton, the first week of November. “This is the fourth year we’ve raised replacement heifers for sale,” says Ernest. “They are good quality cattle and buyers like those red females with a white blaze. They are very versatile and can be re-bred to just about any other breed to produce another red or tan calf. We hope to expand the replacement heifer sales in the coming years.” For the time being, the replacement purebred heifers are being retained to expand the purebred herd at Haddie Simmentals. “If there is a bull calf that stands out, we will keep him for our own breeding program, but otherwise there isn’t a big market for Ontario raised breeding bulls. The reality is that bulls from Western Canada are sought after as herd sires. Most of our bull calves are castrated and marketed as beef. “But as we expand the purebred herd we do hope to one day be able to hold a production sale and market good quality cows and replacement heifers.” Ernest says the immediate plan is to continue to improve the quality of the herd and increase numbers in the coming years. They currently have eight breeding bulls servicing 140 head and they also are doing some embryo transfer work to improve genetics and increase numbers. “Simmental has been and excellent fit in a cross-breeding program with Red Angus,” he says. “We continue to focus on the improving the important traits that include the maternal strengths of the breed along with good feet and udders. The market is always changing, but right now there is strong demand for good quality replacement heifers and we hope to expand that part of our program as well.”
“There is always some variability, with heifers being a bit lighter, but on average the weaning weights on those March/ April born calves averages about 700 pounds,” says

CANADIAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION
BREED IMPROVEMENT BY SEAN MCGRATH
Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association
THE BEST EPD One of the things that I encounter a lot in EPD discussions is that we want “the best” EPD or that selection on EPD does not make “good cattle”. This is a fair comment; however, it also exposes one of the serious misconceptions about what EPD are (or are not). An animal with “good” EPD in the context of a producer discussion tends to have high numbers or EPD in the top 5% of the breed for many traits. Unfortunately, in some ways the way EPD are presented slightly misrepresents and potentially damages the application of EPD and marketing may further skew the objective use of EPD to match genetics to a production system or environment. What EPD really do is describe where an animal’s genetic potential for a specific trait fits within the population being evaluated. For a Canadian Simmental example, let’s use a bull with a WW EPD of 79 in the 50th percentile of the breed. Many would perceive this is “not good” or perhaps more correctly as “not marketable”. This may or may not be good, depending on the situation. The cow/calf industry has not seen massive increases in weaning weights in the last 20 years. In fact, weaning weights have remained statistically constant over that time frame, despite gains in genetic potential for growth across every major breed. This does not mean that the EPD don’t work, instead it indicates that although the animals may have genetic potential to grow more quickly, many ranches do not have the environment to support the expression of that potential. A good indication that the genetic potential for growth has increased is to look at feedlot performance which has increased rapidly over that same time period, with the primary difference being the ranch and the feedlot being that the feedlot provides the environment for expression of potential (feed delivery, water, etc). Over the last 20 years feed conversion, growth rates, carcass weights and marbling levels have all increased at a rapid pace. This requires genetic potential. One of my favourite pieces of beef cattle extension material is the table presented in the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium Sire Selection Manual that identifies general guidelines for selection of maternal sires and terminal sires. This information is presented in Table 1. It is interesting to note that many of the categories of sire selection for maternal production show that optimal is in the Medium or even in the Low range.
Finally, it is useful to point out that genetic selection can be challenging and that there are trade-offs. For example, the highly productive cow genetically, may require more resources and trade off fertility in a tough environment, or the desire for calving ease may result in a loss of weaning weight. Fortunately, we have existing and emerging tools such as selection indexes like API (All Purpose Index) and TI (Terminal Index) that can help to map out these trade-offs systematically and give us an improved selection outcome. As we add new traits to genetic evaluation and develop more indexes that are reflective of specific production systems and uses for genetics, our ability to select genetics that are a “best fit” are enhanced. The table also brings to light several intuitive points. For example, a cow in a tough, high stress environment needs to be smaller with less milk and more backfat than a cow in a low stress environment with high feed availability.
1 Adapted from Bullock D., M. Enns, L. Gould, M. MacNeil and G.P Rupp. Utilization. 2002. Chapter 6. IN: Guidelines for Uniform Beef Improvement Programs. 8th ed. Reproduced from National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium Sire Selection Manual. 2 Heat, cold, parasites, disease, mud, altitude, etc. 3 Ability to store fat and regulate energy requirements with changing (seasonal) availability of feed. 4 Physiological tolerance to heat, cold, internal, external parasites, disease, mud, and other factors. 5 L = Low, M = Medium, H = High
The table brings forward several key points, not all of which are listed. First, different production systems and resource bases should likely be selecting different sires. Secondly, many of the optimal choices for a given production system mean selecting sires that are average, or even below average for some traits. Fortunately, EPD can help us find and isolate these genetics for use in our production systems. It is important to realize that no matter how good it may feel to select a sire in the top 1%, it may be a very poor choice for our operation. It may also be a poor choice to select average genetics for certain traits in an operation with different environmental parameters. To give an absurd example that we can easily picture in our minds, it is very unlikely that you will visit a profitable dairy milking 1200-pound Hereford cows, and it is also extremely unlikely that you will visit a profitable ranch grazing 1800-pound Holsteins south of Medicine Hat. Fitting the right genetics to the right environment is always more profitable than forcing the square peg into the round hole.

CANADIAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION
VET’S ADVICE BY ROY LEWIS, DVM
REVIEW OF PRODUCTION AND HEALTH REMINDERS AND WHAT IS COMING This being the commercial issue of the Simmental Country, thought I would put a list or summary of review points that may help both the purebred and commercial herds. Still one of the best places to glean some tips are from each other. From herd specific points on reproduction animal welfare, vaccination, disease prevention, genetics, handling and even regulatory things we can all learn from each other. We are currently at an all time high for price both commercially and in the purebred sector. I hope all producers are prospering and with that maybe there is some extra money to allow you to do some things that make things easier down the line. I will elaborate on this as this article progresses. This is also an invitation if any topic in this column that will help producers greatly, please mention it to the Simmental Association board. Great time of year to evaluate your handling system. There are great systems out there and if there is a bottle neck point or one where prods seem to be needed or injuries have occurred (either to the cattle or the handlers) think about it. Is there a gate, palpation cage, tub or chute in need of repair please look at it. Don’t forget the loading chute or load in or out for the stock trailer. There is nothing that will really improve efficiency, safety and animal welfare in one step like most hydraulic chutes. When talking across Canada there are even areas where processing crews may custom do that work for you or others where sharing a hydraulic portable chute works well or you can utilize at a pasture set up. For production reasons as some pregnancy check at pasture these are handy tools saving grass and moving open cows to market when demand often is highest. In BC in some areas open cows and calves are shipped to market at the same time so pregnancy checking is done at an earlier time. You know handling is going well when there is virtually no use of prods (maybe a bit at loading into liners), no foul language or yelling and cattle do not run more than a few steps when exiting the chute. We process more than we used to with timing of vaccinations, parasite treatments and timed breeding programs. This makes it imperative that they have a calm experience in handling and if that is the case, handling is even easier the next time. Vaccine programs need to be current of what is necessary in your area through your herd vet and timing on some vaccines like scours vaccine are critical. Everyone should have some sort of insulated cooler to keep things at fridge temperature. To me the core vaccines imperative across Canada are
IBR BVD, Multivalent Clostridial. Mannheimia and in decent sized herds scour vaccines. The diseases protected against is far more important than the trade name of the vaccine. In the west histophilus is also commonly used. If castrating calves especially with banders of any sort of tetanus is key. There are many other diseases that there are vaccines for including but not limited to mycoplasma, footrot, salmonella, anthrax to name a few. It is really imperative if you buy cattle or breeding bulls from another area of Canada, find out what is regularly vaccinated for and other management procedures. This is why I also stress on any bull sale and female sale catalogues, the purebred producers make a point of listing health status. There are a few diseases that are becoming a thing of the past with the preventative measures producers use. The protozoal diseases such as coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis are very rare with the recommended usage of rumen sin and toltrazuril as an example. Other diseases such as Johnes can give us grief testing not 100% accurate, we still have progress to make. Researchers are likely less than ten years away from a vaccine for this production limiting disease. Also, dystocia (calving problems) from fetal oversize is becoming rarer and rarer. This has greatly helped labour at calving and camera technology has greatly improved. Never a bad investment in good cameras at calving and or drones in some cases. I am also confident that some of this virtual fencing may greatly improve be affordable and allow us to also graze these uncropped areas saving both fencing costs and feeding costs. We are closer than ever with monitoring devices enabling us to look at health parameters on a computer spreadsheet. Funny though how good feedlot pen checkers still are invaluable and so are you watching for all the clinical signs and health parameters. It is hard to teach or develop great cattle observational skills most of you have it. Interesting if AI (artificial intelligence) will be able to totally help us with this. Maybe somewhat but I have always been amazed at the very scuttle clinical signs owners pick up about their cattle. With reproduction invitro fertilization and the ability to harvest the unfertilized eggs in heifers and pregnant cows this is allowing quicker multiplication of superior genetics. Artificial insemination has also increased more to do with synchronization and timed breeding but also the use of way more beef semen in the dairy area. This has primarily been black genetics
and to me it would be good to see black Simmental in the mix or potentially a Simmental hybrid bull. The beef sector in general has continued to increase carcass size and the Simmental breed has been a huge part of that as well as always having a good yield grade. Not sure if we are getting close to the limit but always more room for improvement. Always a decent percentage of commercial calves and the purebred calves that don’t make the cut are not implanted. Here is room for more gains and a great return on investment. There are only two companies on the Canadian market now that manufacture implants. With lots of consolidation in the pharmacology industry every year there are major shortages of product. It is why I am always preaching if have a bit of extra money because of the market keep your inventory of necessity products including vaccines specific parasite control and antimicrobials your veterinarian has scripted in at least a six-month supply. That way you have a bit of time to react. Shortages and backorders of product continue to be the veterinary pharmacy industries biggest calamity. One never knows for a number of reasons when product that could be very necessary to your cattle operation is unavailable. It’s a hassle you don’t want to deal with. The greatest interchange between the purebred and commercial cattle ranches is the bull sale. This is where utmost confidence and trust is necessary. The breeding soundness exam from the veterinarian is where trust reliance and expertise are expected of the veterinarian. I have done many articles related to bull health especially centering around the semen evaluation. Always good when looking at pedigrees, phenotype scrotal size that you have a look at the semen form. There may be specific parameters that are more important to your herd. The purebred producers are very transparent on this usually and it is continually being perfected. More and more producers are having semen put up either at an AI stud or by veterinarians licensed for “owners use only” semen. This is like having an insurance policy on a valuable bull which can be used long after the bull is gone, or his breeding life is cut short. When I think how far the cattle industry has come in my 45 years as a veterinarian with more positive changes in the future, I am sure. Maybe there are three things of certainty is of course death and taxes but also the progression of the cattle industry.

Canadian Cattle Association President
FALL PRIORITIES As summer draws to a close, I know that I am not alone in hoping that the worst of the unpredictable and sometimes devastating summer weather is behind us. Across the country we have watched in shock and dismay as wildfires and flooding have once again hit cattle producers hard. We are grateful for good warning systems and support to help evacuate people and livestock safely and efficiently when necessary. The added stresses of extreme weather can take a huge toll on producers, not just financially, but also emotionally and mentally. We don’t talk about this enough as a society in general but there is still a significant amount of stigma in our industry, and I want to stress the importance of self-care and seeking help. If you need mental health support for any reason, please use the resources available: The National Farmer Crisis Line: call 1-866-FARMS01 Suicide Crisis Help Line: call or text 988 or visit https://988.ca The Do More Agriculture Foundation is a national foundation focused on mental health in Canadian agriculture and has links to crisis supports as well as excellent resources for non-urgent issues: www.domore.ag If you haven’t done so recently, reach out to your friends and neighbours and ask them how they are doing. If you recognize signs of struggle or think someone may not be coping with their current circumstances, offer support and connect them with these organizations. We need to take care of ourselves and each other like we take care of our cattle. In addition to extreme weather and threats of tariffs, we are seeing increased media attention and producer interest toward Business Risk Management programs, especially AgriStability and to a lesser extent Livestock Price Insurance following the federal, provincial and territorial agriculture ministers (FPT) meeting in July and the subsequent Halifax Statement. For years, Canadian Cattle Association Directors have captured the importance of Business Risk Management (BRM) programs in policies that guide CCA’s advocacy efforts. CCA’s position is that we believe that strong government supports are needed to offset emergency events that disrupt trade or otherwise endanger business continuity and security of the beef cattle industry. In addition to extreme weather, producers face pressure and uncertainty with fluctuations in energy costs, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitics.
We welcome the increased attention and interest on Business Risk Management, and fall is an opportune time to look more closely at these programs. The cow/calf sector of the cattle industry has not historically been well served by AgriStability, as we spent much of the last 20 years with chronically low or negative margins. Beef farmers and ranchers that have not participated in the program should reconsider, as this sector finally has some profitability to protect with profitability in this sector leading the whole agriculture industry. My column in September issue of Canadian Cattlemen Magazine takes a closer look at what was discussed and where improvement is still necessary. I encourage you to read the column in the magazine or look it up on their website to learn more about the proposed changes and CCA’s concerns. Earlier this year, CCA launched an aggressive campaign to raise awareness about trade negotiations between Canada and Mercosur that could see a massive increase in imports of Mercosur beef. Mercosur is the Southern Common Market (called MERCOSUR for its Spanish initials). It is a South American economic and political trade bloc established in 1991 and comprised of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Increased imports would incentivize beef production on the other side of the world, disincentive cattle production and herd rebuilding in Canada, and would have no impact on the price of beef in Canada. At a time when the federal government is investing in food security, increased trade with Mercosur that would allow increased beef imports does not make sense. Thank you to everyone who visited www.cattle. ca/mercosur and supported our position. At the time of submitting this article, negotiations are ongoing and the campaign continues. Other issues we are working on this fall are possible tariffs, potential trade agreements, discussions about the renewal of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), and global policy decisions. We encourage you to attend a producer meeting in your area and watch for updates from ABP and CCA. Stay informed about CCA’s activities: Website: www.cattle.ca Sign up for CCA’s bi-weekly newsletter, Action News at www.cattle.ca Facebook: www.facebook.com/CanCattle Twitter/X: https://x.com/CanCattle
Ministers aim to reach a decision on AgriStability changes for the 2027 program year. While the proposed AgriStability changes are encouraging, we are worried that the biggest inequity facing cattle producers is not seeing as strong of commitment. AgriStability is important across agricultural sectors. Recent changes are a welcome improvement, however, until cattle producers have access to the same level of support that crop farmers have with crop insurance, there will be a systemic bias for crop production over livestock production.

AJSA REPORT BY HEIDI MCFADDEN AND LEE SHOLOGAN
The American Junior Simmental Association (AJSA) hosted the 2026 National Classic in Grand Island, Nebraska. There were 525 competitors exhibiting over 1,500 head of cattle, making it the largest and most impressive junior show I have attended. I was awarded the opportunity to attend as a Canadian delegate, as I was one of the two Top Aggregate competitors at the National Young Canadian Simmental Association show held in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, in 2025.
When I headed to the 2025 YCSA National Classic Junior show in Weyburn Saskatchewan, I was totally not expecting to have headed home with the opportunity to represent YCS at the American National Classic junior show. At the end of the show, I was excited when I received the honor of being the top overall aggregate of the show and being the Top 2 aggregate winners receiving the prize trip to the American Simmental Junior Nationals, a trip of a lifetime was on the horizon in 2026.
As I was planning for the trip, I opted to maximize the time I could spend walking through the barns and watching the show by not exhibiting cattle. I participated in the public speaking, judging, sales talk, and quiz competitions as a Senior Competitor. The two show days each ran 8 to 10 hours, during which I sat with the show program and my fellow Canadian Simmental breeders in the stands, evaluating the cattle, studying the genetics, and taking in the show.
This June I attended the American Junior Nationals hosted in Grand Island Nebraska alongside Heidi McFadden, the other winner for 2026. There were over 600 juniors competing and 1500 head of cattle entered to compete. I was fortunate to be able to compete in public speaking, sales talk, judging, genetic evaluation quiz and herdsman quiz. Out of 250 intermediates I placed 12th in public speaking.
I would encourage any youth considering attending a national show in Canada or the United States to sign up and go. For me, it was an incredible opportunity to study cattle and appreciate the depth of the breed. Being able to see such a large number of progeny from different sires in the show ring gave me a unique opportunity to evaluate the consistency of various bulls and observe how their genetics translated across a large group of cattle. Almost as important were the friendships I made with the Canadian exhibitors and families who attended. I would be remiss if I did not recognize Lee Shologan (the second delegate who attended) for his success in the Public Speaking competition, along with Paige Hanes and Gracie Bohrson for both having great shows. In true Canadian fashion, the four of us came together to support one another and represent the breed in which we have all invested. We met many others over the course of the week, but we had a lot of fun sharing the experience, especially during our ice cream breaks. I am genuinely grateful to the Friends of the Canadian Simmental Association for their contribution toward my trip. It has been a highlight of my youth career. As my youth career advances and approaches its conclusion, the friendships, learning opportunities, and connections I have made across Canada and the United States seem increasingly important. I would like to wish Lee Shologan and Kade Rancier the very best of luck in 2027 at the AJSA National Classic, which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky.
Beyond the opportunity of competing this trip was a blast! I got to meet so many people. Walking up and down every aisle networking. Talking with so many people helped me understand the American agriculture sector better. The show was one of my favourite parts. Dad and I were able to sit through 2 full days of extraordinary cattle walking through the rings. We were able to watch the percentage owned and open shows and then the purebred owned and open shows. One of my favourite parts about watching the show was being able to watch the different sire groups in the ring, with some sire groups having up to 80 head in the show. As well, looking through the different daughters of donors was a highlight. While the cattle were one of the major highlights. Seeing the Grand Island facilities was amazing. 3 massive barns, 1 large show ring with air conditioning. The design of everything in the barns is amazing, all the power and water is set up directly where the stalls are with lots of extra outlets for power designed around cattle shows and agriculture. This trip was truly amazing, knocking a checkmark on my bucket list. I was able to make a lot of friendships and meet a lot of influential people. The biggest Thank-you goes out to the Young Canadian Simmental Association, the Canadian Simmental Association and the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for supporting the youth of the Simmental breed and making a trip like this possible! – Lee Shologan
