T
“Collaboration – The Key to Moving Forward”
he Canadian Beef production chain is one with many links and segments. Seed-stock, cow-calf, feedlot, processors, retailers and food service, all play an important role in providing consumers with beef that is nutritious and provides value to all through a quality eating experience. All of these segments are equally important in the production of beef and also in messaging the story of how beef is produced. Beef production is facing increasing challenges of misinformation and we all share the responsibility of providing consistent, accurate and informative messaging in a world that is becoming challenged with “information overload.” Sustainability of food production and particularly beef, has been a growing discussion within society as a whole and many industry organizations are being active in that discussion which has led to the development of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) https://crsb.ca/. The CRSB draws together beef producer groups as well as major companies to discuss concerns and ideas on how to make beef production sustainable financially, environmentally, and in a way that is acceptable to mainstream society. This dialogue is a two-way street in that beef producers need to listen as well as educate. It truly needs to be a learning process for all. Canadian Simmental recently joined the CRSB as a member and is looking forward to working with the CRSB membership in the future. One of the benefits of collaboration and increased interaction with those partners in the beef production chain has been an increased awareness of the need and importance of genetic improvement in cattle focusing on many areas including meat quality, efficiency, stayability, health and wellness and optimizing beef’s environmental footprint. This new focus is very timely as the major Canadian beef breeds are working through the Canadian Beef Breeds Council in developing a business plan and structure for the creation of the Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN). Canadian Simmental has taken an active lead in this process along with others and is committed to playing a role in collaborating to continue improving the genetics of the Canadian beef industry. There are many reasons as to why this is important. When compared to genetic improvement used in the poultry, hog and dairy sectors it is safe to say that the beef industry has lagged behind our protein competitors; and breed associations have been fortunate that others haven’t taken control of seed-stock production. With

the new emerging plant-based protein products, we are seeing new competition and choices for consumer’s food dollars. We need our industry to become more efficient and that applies to all breeds, the ones who fail to recognize this will be delegated to “hobby” status like some already have. The Canadian beef herd is established on a crossbreeding model and producers need to know not only how breeds interact with one another, but which bull within a specific breed can provide the improvement that is needed. While still in the early developmental stage, CBIN is a possibility for breed associations to acquire data from commercial cattle in order to develop better selection tools and provide genetics to make the industry more sustainable. Again, collaboration is key to CBIN happening. Canadian Simmental has also partnered with American Simmental over the last several decades in striving to improve and promote the breed. Since the importation of Parisien over fifty years ago, we have worked together through our promotion efforts and through our joint genetic evaluation in advancing the Simmental breed in North America. While attending the American Simmental Fall Focus in Manhattan, Kansas in late August, attendees were made aware of some new projects and opportunities that will greatly benefit Simmental. Canadian Simmental and our customers can also utilize some of these initiatives such as the Feeder Profit Calculator https://www.internationalgeneticsolutions.com/index.php/feederprofit-calc as a product of our partnership through the International Genetic Solutions (IGS) structure. Canadian Simmental breeders and the CSA have enjoyed unprecedented success over the last decade because of collaboration and building relationships throughout the industry. There is no “Power of One” in the beef industry, we have proven there is far more to gain when we work collaboratively and there are many opportunities for valuable collaborations within the beef industry ahead. Parentage and Beyond – Part 1
P
robably one of the most fundamental items associated with purebred cattle is that of a registration paper. Over time, a “registration” has changed to the point where it may only appear online and there is a lot of information on the paper besides a fancy name. The one constant over time has been that a registration documents the pedigree of the animal. If you are in doubt of this fact, just realize that your breed association and you as a breeder are technically governed by Canadian law that is laid out in the “Animal Pedigree Act.” Obviously, as seedstock breeders we think that pedigree and pedigree integrity is a key component of our business. The concept of like begets like and breeding cattle with known pedigrees to achieve defined goals is pretty much the definition of a breeding program. A lot of the by-laws and discussions held at breed association tables concern pedigree integrity and managing the accuracy of the herdbook. Some History Originally, parentage was confirmed through the use of blood typing and it has since gone through a couple of different DNA based technologies including microsatellites and now SNPs. No matter what technology platform we have moved to, parentage confirmation basically works through the process of elimination/disqualification. In other words, by looking at an animal’s DNA and comparing it to that of the stated parents we can determine who is not an eligible parent. A simplified example is shown below. In this example, the breeder has nominated 2 potential sires as the father of the Calf. Sire 1 is disqualified since the Calf has AA at position 1. Sire 1 has aa at position 1 so could not have given the A to the calf. He is disqualified as the sire. Sire 2 qualifies as a sire of the calf since the markers present in the calf could have all come from Sire 2. This is a very simplified example, since an actual parentage test examine in excess of 200 markers and a higher resolution test such as a 50K will examine hundreds of markers. This creates a very high accuracy or resolution for the test. In fact, the current SNP parentage test has an accuracy well in excess of 99.9%. Some Common Problems Sometimes we run into problems where pedigrees don’t match what we are sure of. This can create some distrust in the system, but an understanding of what can go wrong, also provides us with many of the answers to our own questions.

Wrong Sire/Dam Identified - Often errors in parentage (where a sire is disqualified for example) is simply a bookkeeping error where an animal ID or sample ID is misidentified. The correction can be as simple as pulling a new sample or nominating an additional sire/dam for testing. Thief in the Night - It is remarkable how fast a bull can breed a cow. “He was only out for about 10 minutes before I caught him,” is a common phrase. It is a good idea to note any escapees and add them to the potential sires list. Improper Sample - This challenge can range from a sample being mislabelled, to being collected improperly to simply being dirty. This can be especially problematic with hair since we need to ensure we have follicles or hair bulbs in the sample. As well, if testing several animals at a time, it is extremely important to prevent cross contamination of samples. Hair and cow manure can make a sticky, staticky mess. It is important to ensure a clean sample from each animal. Past Error - Because pedigrees are built upon generations, sometimes an error from the past can come back to bite us. For an example, a sire may have had a mislabelled DNA sample placed on file, years ago and died in the meantime, or there may have been another error. A more common error might be a sire that is used without being parent verified and then expires before a sample is collected. This creates a difficult challenge for conducting parentage on future generations. A good policy for any seedstock operation is to collect hair samples on each breeding animal in the herd, including sires and dams. Hair samples can be easily stored in envelopes labeled with the animal’s tattoo and kept in a filing cabinet or drawer. These samples will keep for an extended period of time if handled in this way. The next article in this series will discuss some options and applications that you may already be using, or that may be novel approaches for your operation that will hopefully outline some of the opportunities of an expanded parentage/DNA testing program.

The following year, he was actively involved with the Ontario YCS organization as it planned and hosted the National YCSA Classic held in Metcalfe, ON. “And it was always exciting to attend the YCSA board meetings held in Calgary,” he says. “What stands out to me was the professionalism of those meetings. I got to see and be part of 12

La production bovine fait présentement face à beaucoup de désinformation, de telle sorte qu’il est du devoir de chacun de délivrer des messages précis, uniformes et basés sur des faits concrets, dans un monde qui devient de plus en plus « envahi d’informations de toutes parts ». La discussion concernant la production d’aliments de manière durable, et en particulier de la viande de boeuf, a pris une très grande ampleur au sein de la société, alors que plusieurs organisations sont impliquées dans toutes ces discussions. Ceux-là ont notamment conduit à la mise en place récente de la Table ronde canadienne sur le bœuf durable (« CRSB »), https://crsb.ca/. Plusieurs groupes de producteurs et d’importantes compagnies sont regroupés autour de cette table ronde, ils y discutent d’enjeux et de moyens de favoriser la production de bœuf durable tant financièrement, dans le respect de l’environnement et tout endemeurant acceptable pour toute la société. Le dialogue doit aller dans les deux sens, car les producteurs doivent autant écouter qu’informer le public. Tous les intervenants doiventainsicontribuer au processus d’apprentissage. L’Association Simmental est récemment devenue membre de la table ronde du CRSB et nous avons hâte de travailler avec tous les autres membres. Par cette collaboration et l’augmentation de tels échanges entre les partenaires de la chaîne de production du boeuf au Canada, nous devenons encore davantage conscients de la nécessité et de l’importancede poursuivre notre travail d’amélioration génétique des bovins, en plaçant notre emphase davantage vers la qualité de la viande, l’efficacité des bovins, leur longévité, leur santé et bien-être, et cela tout en laissant une empreinte environnementale optimale. Cette nouvelle orientation arrive alors que les principales associations de race de boucherie collaborent avec le Conseil Canadien des races de boucherie (“CBBC”) au développement d’un plan d’affaires et à la création du Réseau Canadien d’amélioration du bœuf («Canadian Beef Improvement Network /CBIN»). De concert avec les autres intervenants concernés, l’Association Simmental du Canada a été activement impliquée et elle collabore à l’amélioration continue de la génétique des bovins de boucherie au Canada. Cela est très important pour diverses raisons. Lorsqu’on se compare au domaine de l’amélioration génétique chez les volailles, les porcs et les bovins laitiers, on peut affirmer que l’industrie bovine est en retard comparativement à nos compétiteurs producteurs de protéines animales. De plus, les associations de 14
races de boucherie peuvent se compter chanceuses que d’autres intervenants n’aient pas pris le contrôle du monde de l’élevage bovin de race pure. Par ailleurs, avec l’introduction récente de tous ces produits de protéines à base de plantes, nous faisons face à une nouvelle compétition et à des choix accrus pour les consommateurs qui achètent leurs aliments. Notre industrie doit devenir plus efficace et cela sans égard à la race considérée, car tous ceux qui ne voudront pas reconnaître ces réalités seront relégués au rang de « race de loisir », tels que certains le sont déjà. Le cheptel canadien de bovins de boucherie repose sur un système de croisements de races. Les producteurs ne doivent pas uniquement connaître comment les races interagissent entre elles, mais ils doivent aussi identifier quel taureau d’une race donnée peut apporter l’amélioration visée. Bien que le projet du Réseau “CBIN” soit encore au stade du développement, cette nouvelle entité pourrait permettre aux associations de race de boucherie d’acquérir des données sur les bovins commerciaux, ce qui contribuerait à développer de nouveaux indices de sélection et diffuser du matériel génétique, tout en favorisant l’amélioration de la durabilité de notre industrie. Encore là, la collaboration est essentielle si on veut que le Réseau CBIN se concrétise. Au cours des dernières décennies, l’Association Simmental du Canada a également travaillé en partenariat avec l’Association Simmental Américaine afin d’améliorer et de promouvoir notre race. Depuis l’importation il y a plus de cinquante ans de Parisien, nous avons collaboré ensemble dans nos efforts de promotion et notre évaluation génétique conjointe, afin de faire progresser la race Simmental en Amérique du nord. À la fin du mois d’août, lors de la rencontre “Fall Focus” organisée par l’Association Simmental Américaine à Manhattan, au Kansas, les participants ont été informés de certains nouveaux projets et de nouvelles opportunités qui aideront la race Simmental. Dans la production de bovins de boucherie,il n’y a pas de “puissance suprême”, on a fait la preuve qu’on peut gagner beaucoup plus par la collaboration, et il y a encore devant nous plusieurs autres opportunités de collaboration au sein de l’industrie bovine. Au-delà de la parenté – 1ere partie
U
n certificat d’enregistrement est sans doute l’une des pièces les plus importantes associées avec un animal de race pure. Avec le temps, un “enregistrement” a été modifié à un tel point qu’il n’est souvent disponible qu’en consultation en ligne. Toutefois, même s’il porte un drôle de nom, il contient une foule de renseignements. À la base, un enregistrement permet toujours de confirmer la généalogie de l’animal. Si vous doutez de cette réalité, vous en tant qu’éleveur ainsi que votre association de race devez réaliser que vous êtes en principe tenus de respecter la loi canadienne désignée « Loi sur la généalogie des animaux ». Bien évidemment, nous croyons que la généalogie et le respect de l’intégrité de la généalogie sont des éléments clé des affaires des éleveurs sélectionneurs. Le cumul d’informations sur des sujets de la race et l’élevage de bovins avec des généalogies connues décrivent bien ce qu’on entend par un programme d’élevage. Bon nombre des discussions à propos des statuts et des règlements en vigueur chez les associations de race concernent le respect de l’intégrité de la généalogie et le contrôle de la fiabilité du livre généalogique. Un peu d’histoire À l’origine, on confirmait la parenté avec l’analyse des groupes sanguins et on a par la suite adopté de nouvelles technologies d’analyse de l’ADN, premièrement par l’étude des microsatellites et, maintenant, par l’analyse des « SNP ». Toutefois, peu importe le procédé technologique employé, la confirmation de la parenté est basée fondamentalement sur un processus d’élimination / de disqualification. En d’autres mots, en regardant l’ADN d’un animal et en le comparant à celui des parents indiqués, on peut donc déterminer si un des parents n’est pas admissible. Voici ci-après un exemple simplifié. Dans cet exemple, l’éleveur a déclaré deux taureaux comme étant pères potentiels du veau. Le taureau 1 est disqualifié compte tenu que le veau est du type AA au marqueur no 1. Le taureau 1 est du type aa au marqueur no 1, il ne peut donc pas avoir transmis un A au veau. Il est ainsi disqualifié comme étant le père du veau. Le taureau 2 est qualifié à titre de père du veau puisque les marqueurs présents chez le veau peuvent tous avoir été transmis par lui. Il s’agit d’un exemple très simplifié, puisqu’on analyse plus de 200 marqueurs lors d’une analyse de la parenté et, dans le cas d’une analyse avec une résolution élevée telle que le test 50 K, on examinera des centaines de marqueurs. Une telle analyse obtient donc une précision ou une résolution très élevée. Dans les faits, l’analyse de la parenté couramment effectuée avec les SNP est précise à plus de 99, 9 %. Quelques problèmes communs Il arrive parfois qu’on a des problèmes lorsque les généalogies ne correspondent pas à ce qu’on croyait qu’elles devaient être. Cela peut parfois conduire à une certaine méfiance envers le système mais, en comprenant la source du problème, on peut ainsi obtenir des réponses à nos questions.

Mauvaise identification du père / mère - Les erreurs au niveau de la parenté (lorsqu’un taureau est par exemple disqualifié) peuvent simplement être le résultat d’une erreur dans nos registres, alors que l’identification d’un animal ou d’un échantillon est erronée. La correction peut être faite simplement en prélevant un nouvel échantillon ou bien en désignant un taureau / une vache additionnelle pour être analysé. Taureau actif durant la nuit - C’est étonnant avec quelle rapidité un taureau peut saillir une vache. “Il était dehors seulement dix minutes, puis je l’ai rattrapé” est une phrase qu’on entend régulièrement. C’est une bonne idée de prendre en note les “fugitifs” et de les ajouter à la liste de taureaux potentiels. Échantillon impropre à l’analyse - La problématique dans ce cas-ci peut être reliée à une mauvaise identification de l’échantillon, ou un échantillon non recueilli de la bonne manière, ou encore un échantillon trop sale. Cela est particulièrement difficile avec les échantillons de poils, car on doit s’assurer que les poils échantillonnés incluent les follicules ou les bulbes pileux. De plus, si on fait tester plusieurs sujets en même temps, il est extrêmement important de prévenir qu’on n’ait pas de contamination croisée avec nos échantillons. Rappelez-vous que les poils et le fumier bovin ne font pas vraiment un bon ménage. Il faut s’assurer d’avoir un échantillon propre pour chaque animal. Erreur dans le passé - Puisque les généalogies sont construites sur les générations précédentes, une erreur faite dans le passé peut parfois revenir nous hanter. Par exemple, un échantillon d’ADN mal identifié peut avoir été classé dans le dossier d’un taureau il y a plusieurs années, puis le taureau est décédé, ou encore il peut s’agir d’un autre type d’erreur. De manière plus commune, il arrive qu’on utilise un taureau sans que sa parenté ait été vérifiée, et qu’il meurt par la suite sans qu’on ait prélevé un échantillon. Cela peut occasionner une situation très compliquée si on veut effectuer des vérifications de la parenté pour les prochaines générations. Chaque éleveur de bovins de race devrait prélever des échantillons de poils chez chaque sujet d’élevage de son troupeau, tout autant chez les taureaux que chez les vaches. Ces échantillons de poils peuvent être facilement conservés dans des enveloppes identifiées avec le tatouage de l’animal, puis ils sont placés dans un classeur ou un tiroir. En étant ainsi conservés, ces échantillons pourront être gardés très longtemps. Peritonitis and its Causes
eritonitis refers to the inflammation or infection around the peritoneum which is the inside lining if you like in cattle and other species’ abdomens. Any infection involving or in the abdomen has the nondescript term peritonitis to describe it. This could be infection around the intestines, stomachs, liver or uterus in cows and heifers. What is most important here is there are many causes of peritonitis and if your veterinarian can diagnose it and determine the cause it may in some cases prevent future infections. Some cases aren’t really preventable but at least you can be comforted in the thought there is nothing you could have done and not a contagious disease. With peritonitis increased temperature, depression and grunting from a painful abdomen are common signs. Your veterinarian may take blood for a blood count and check fibrinogen levels, which are an indication inflammatory material is collecting in the abdomen. The abdomen is painful on palpation and a veterinary test is the grunt test with a withers pinch. The disease entity talked about most by producers is hardware disease, which is a form of peritonitis. This is caused by something sharp mainly metal penetrating though the reticulum (first stomach) and causing leakage of contents and infection. This may even involve infection around the heart. This is a very good example if by finding out the cause and more cases are noted treatment can be started earlier and your veterinarian may in certain circumstances advise putting magnets in the cattle. The magnets stay in the reticulum for the life of the animal and any iron metal compound sticks to the magnet and is prevented from penetrating through the first stomache. Magnets have come down in price over the years and the good ones are very strong. Intense feeder operations including dairies where lots of equipment is used and silage fed has metal getting into the feed sources and “hardware disease” can be a reoccurring problem. If caught early anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics, which get into the abdomen, are what your veterinarian may prescribe. Some equipment has the feed passing over a magnet and I used to see this in blowers pushing silage into an upright silo. Today with mainly pit silos this does not happen. A good many other causes of acute diffuse peritonitis result in a fairly sudden death (over one-two days) and that is why autopsies on these cows may give you very usable
information. These deaths can be posted under the BSE testing program in many of the cases as long as they are greater than 30 months of age and meet the other criteria. A post mortem is absolutely critical to help determine the exact cause of the peritonitis. Sometimes the history may give it away such as a hard calving or head back or a breech birth that was corrected and all these problems may lead to a torn uterus if one is not careful. Then the placenta and uterine contents leak into the abdomen and peritonitis is the result. In major infections the whole abdomen may be infected and it may actually be very difficult for the attending veterinarian to determine the initiating cause of the infection. Cattle have an amazing ability to try and wall off the infection minimizing its spread, which is why they can take the most of any species when it comes to abdominal infection. This is why c-sections can be performed in barns with surprisingly good results as long as some degree of hygiene is performed. Peritonitis can be caused from such other things as abscesses on the liver rupturing or the vagina of a heifer rupturing from a traumatic breeding by a large aggressive bull. Grain overloads can lead to peritonitis especially around the rumen. The rectum may rupture at calving or another phenomena called the scissor effect occur if the cow’s small intestines get trapped between the pelvis and uterus. This happens more with a backwards calving and as the calf is expelled the pressure on the intestines creates a cut from the cows pelvis. Ingesta is spilled out internally and the cow usually dies within 24-36 hours. These can happen from a pull or even when a cow calves naturally. Postmortems in this case identify the problem and is one that generally can’t be prevented, and it rules out other sudden death of cows such as blackleg or grass tetany, which could be prevented. Other causes are perforation by metal rectal thermometers, toggling method used on LDA (left displaced abomasum). In the old days there were rumen injectors for a worm treatment and if the product did not get into the rumen it leaked out around it. So, any penetrating wound into the abdomen or disease process that gets into the abdomen gives us the possibilities of a peritonitis. I have had the rectum rip clear through from palpating two times in my long veterinary career. This 17
would have caused this same death but in one instance I had the heifer emergency slaughtered and in the other instance I was able to suture the tear back up. This is why in tough calvings or when mal-presentations are corrected we check the uterus after to make sure there are not any tears. If you discover them have your veterinarian out, as they may be able to suture them up and save the cow. When treating cows for milk fever and other metabolic disorders certain products are approved for intraperitoneal use but many are not so be careful. If giving products this way make sure the needle is new and is given through a clean area. There once was a rumen injector for giving a deworming product directly into the rumen and it was very soon pulled because of the peritonitis it was causing. This could be an infectious process or a chemical peritonitis from the sensitive internal organs reaction to the product. Regardless in either case you have a very sick animal. We must be careful and at first do no harm so think twice about injecting anything into the abdomen unless advised by your veterinarian. The newest trend in pregnancy testing is using an ultrasound with an introducer. Your veterinarian must use lots of lubricant on these and introduce carefully if the cows have dry manure. I know of two instances that I have heard

of whereby there has been a perforation of the colon by the introducer and a dead cow. Unlike when I did it manually the veterinarian had no idea this had happened so after handling, processing or preg checking it is good to get any sudden deaths posted so if an injury during processing or perforation occurred steps could be made to hopefully prevent it happening in the future. Peritonitis in young calves can result from perforated abomasal ulcers, blocked intestines; navel infections gone internal so always keep these in mindwhen dealing with sick calves. Many methods are used to prevent navel infections and surgery may be done on the other two problems if caught early enough. Work with your veterinarian by posting unexplained deaths as the incidence of many of these causes can be reduced or as already mentioned you may even find a disease you never expected. A diagnosis of peritonitis on postmortem would be very hard for trained veterinarians to miss but the real key is what really caused it in the first place.

The past few months have been a time of tremendous growth for the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA). In the wake of issues such as Canada’s Food Guide, label claims, and alternative proteins, CCA leadership deemed it necessary that a new Food Policy committee be formed to drive industry’s approach to these growing concerns. To lead this initiative, Policy Manager Jennifer Babcock was hired in the Ottawa office in June. Babcock brings a wealth of experience in government relations and policy and we are confident that this file is in good hands. The committee will advocate to the Government of Canada on behalf of cattle producers to ensure food related policies are science-based and not misleading. This past May, CCA shared its perspective on the labelling and marketing of meat, plant-based proteins, and lab-grown proteins at Health Canada’s 2019 Food and Nutrition Stakeholder Engagement Session and the Beef and Pork Value Chain Roundtables Joint Session in Ottawa. The CCA’s view is that for a product to be labelled or marketed as meat it must meet the legal definition of “meat” or “meat by-product” as defined in the Food and Drug Regulation. Subsequently, the Quebec Beef Producers submitted a complaint to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) about the labelling of an alternative plant-based protein product marketing itself as meat. The CCA is working with its U.S. counterpart, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and international bodies like the International Meat Secretariat, International Beef Alliance, and Codex Alimentarius Commission, on the need for a consistent approach to, and predictable rules for, the labelling of meat products. Another active government relations initiative for CCA has been Bill C-68, the Fisheries Act. The amended Act received Royal Assent on June 21, 2019, and contained several Senate amendments, including the repeal of the ‘Deeming Habitat’ provision, or subsection 2(2). CCA is pleased with these final amendments and has been asked to provide regulatory development input by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans on a Routine Works Regulation. This will essentially define routine agricultural structures and activities for exemption, as well as related codes of practice and standards; a process that will take at least several months. Regarding pending livestock transportation regulations, the CCA has drafted a letter sent to the Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister seeking a two-year delay on enforcement until the ongoing research project is completed. 20
Several meetings have been held with the Minister on this issue. The Government of Canada recognizes there are challenges with the legislation as currently drafted and have expressed a willingness to investigate possible options to deal with the concerns. The leadership of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has also engaged and is also committed to find a workable solution. On the animal health side, CCA is part of a CFIAled BSE Negligible Risk Application Industry/Government Working Group tasked with preparing Canada’s OIE application for Negligible Risk Status. The application must be submitted by May 2020 for acceptance in July 2020. The OIE will then proceed with an in-depth review of Canada’s submission and will provide a final decision in March 2021. This is important because moving Canada to a Negligible Risk status is a critical first step in adjusting requirements for specified risk material to better align with that of the U.S. Achieving Negligible Risk status will also assist in enhancing competitiveness for eastern Canada fed cattle marketing. Heading into fall, we will be watching daily for movement on the Canada U.S. Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). The agreement, which replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement, was signed by the three leaders at the end of November 2018, beginning the ratification steps required to implement. In June 2019, Mexico became the first of the three nations to ratify leaving ratification to Canada and the U.S. On May 29, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tabled Bill C-100 “An Act to implement the Agreement between Canada, the United States of America, and the United Mexican States,” which is the enabling legislation to implement CUSMA. Second reading took place on June 20 and the bill was referred to the Standing Committee on International Trade. As fall run begins, we will also be monitoring the Canadian and American markets through the team at Canfax. CCA will also be in pre and post-election mode in the coming months. An election policy document (available on the CCA website) has been created and is being circulated to all prominent candidates across Canada. Producers are encouraged to reach out to the candidates in their riding and use this document for guiding discussions on the key issues facing the Canadian beef industry. Finally, I would like to wish all of our Canadian producers from coast to coast a safe and prosperous 2019 harvest.

Simmental on the Move

ongratulations to all involved in the successful Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) events at the 2019 National Classic held in August at St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. Young cattle people from across the nation gathered for an event-filled long weekend that annually offers the opportunity to take part in a wide range of fun, interesting, educational and rewarding activities that offer something for everyone. This event that moves to different locations every year provides the place for young beef cattle enthusiasts to take part in a variety of contests where one can compare their skills and talents with others in their own age groups. You will see or read about the winners in the multitude of divisions in this issue. One of the best parts of this event is that it offers several contests where youth can compete, even if they do not have the great cattle. Scrapbook, live animal judging with oral reasons, print marketing, grooming and showmanship contests allow all people taking part the chance to excel at something. Many young adults have been at previous YCSA events and can further add to the acquaintances and longterm friendships they have made through these past summer gatherings. You will find several of these new friends will become life-long buddies and/or future business contacts years down the road.
Nobody can forget the enormous success the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation group again had in their annual fundraising auction also held during the Annual Canadian Simmental Association Annual Meeting in Quebec. Well over $100,000 was raised again this year to support scholarships and the YCSA program. Congratulations to the caring breeders that donate their time and expertise to organize this terrific project, as well as to all the generous donors and auction bidders that put money into this worthwhile fund. If you have been able to attend one of these YCSA events in past years, I am sure you look forward to repeating the exciting experience. If you have not yet had the thrill, I would suggest starting to plan for the time when you can be there, take part to whatever extent you want and set yourself up for a fantastic, fun trip you will positively remember for the rest of your life. Another tip of the hat to all the folks from the Quebec Simmental Association for putting on the fun events while hosting the Canadian Simmental Association Annual Meeting. Next year we have the opportunity to visit Manitoba for the AGM and YCSA Show in July 2020. See you there!

With great sadness we announce the death of William Edward “Bill� MacLeod, husband of Susan (Jamieson) MacLeod and son of the late Daniel and Emma (Trundle) MacLeod on August 21, 2019. During his illness, he remained brave and thankful and set a great example for family and friends. Besides his wife of 51 years, Susan, he is survived by his son Andrew (Alison Rideout) of Linwood, Ontario, his daughter Sarah (Stephen Strickey) of Ottawa, and his beloved grandchildren Zachary StAmand, Emma, Sam and Adam MacLeod and William, Noah and Lucas Strickey. He loved being their father and Papa, and they gave him unconditional love and support. He is also survived by several loving nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his granddaughter, Maggie MacLeod, brothers Carl (Eva), Arnold (Margaret) and sister Danena Masters (Earl). Born in St. Stephen, NB, Bill grew up in a strong farming family. His sense of family, hard work and interest in agriculture were fostered at an early age. He left the farm to study education at the University of New Brunswick where he earned a Bachelor of Education and later attended the University of Maine where he graduated with a Masters in Educational Administration. Bill enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a teacher and principal. During his career he taught in New Brunswick in Millville, St. Stephen, Oromocto and Fredericton as well as in Germany. The last 18 years were spent as Principal of Priestman Street School. He took great pride in his career and enjoyed meeting former students and colleague that he impacted throughout his decades in education. Bill was a man of great integrity and faith and had a wealth of varied interests. He loved travelling, amassed an impressive art collection and was an excellent chef. Bill enjoyed the company of family, friends and neighbours. His intelligence, quick wit and caring manner will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His heart never left the family farm as following his retirement Bill developed a serious interest in breeding Simmental cattle. He was associated for many years with the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) culminating in induction to the CSA Hall of Fame in 2012.

It was with great honour and privilege that I was able to attend my second AJSA National Classic this past summer in Louisville, Kentucky. Thanks to the Young Canadian Simmental Association, I was able to develop my skills in many areas including judging and sales talk, as well as meet many incredible people. What I appreciate most about these junior associations and junior shows is the friendships and connections made. It was a great experience alongside Ryan Edwards, who I know I will be friends with for years to come. The show itself was absolutely outstanding. The quality of the cattle was unreal which makes me extremely proud to be in the Simmental industry. After participating in two AJSA National Classics, I am still astounded at the number of participants in the show and the work these young cattlemen put into it. I am extremely proud to have represented Canada on such a level and bring back many memories and experiences.

Hi my name is Ryan Edwards and I’m from Carbon, AB. I competed last year at the YCSA National Classic in Olds, AB and I was fortunate enough to win a trip to the American Junior Simmental National Show. This show was held in Louisville, Kentucky at the end of July and was known as the ‘Race to the Bluegrass’. It was incredible to be able to compete in the competitions and even walk away with a few awards in these competitions with finishing 8th in Judging and 18th in the Sales Talk. Being able to watch the different types of cattle walk through the ring was something else! The cattle being exhibited were always fit up to the nines and the quality of cattle ran extremely deep throughout the entire show. It was unique to see the different techniques that were used in the showmanship ring and then displayed in the conformation ring. It was almost like a completely different environment when we were down there. I would like to thank the Young Canadian Simmental Association, the Canadian Simmental Association, and the Friends of the Canadian Simmental Association for giving me Morgan and I the opportunity to be able to have an experience like this. To all those behind the scenes that make this possible I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank-you to Kelsey for being such a great mentor for the kids in the Simmental Association, it was a pleasure to be able to get to know you more. This is an experience that will not be forgotten, and the skills I learned will be applied to my own cattle operation. - Ryan Edwards 32
