The Signs of Fall

020 is in its final stages and the signs of fall are all around us with beef producers weaning the calf-crop as well as the grain harvest nearing completion. In some areas both are completed and at the time of writing this article the fall feeder calf sales have begun with strong prices.

In many parts of Canada, heavier calves and grass-yearlings are bringing $1500-$1600 which is substantially better than we anticipated when cattle headed out to spring pastures. Hopefully these prices will hold as the numbers of cattle that are offered for sale increases.

Another annual sign of fall is the CSA Board and Committee meetings that are usually held the third week of October. However, the CSA Board decided that with changes to the fall shows they would move the meetings back one month and are meeting November 15th to 17th in Calgary. This year the meetings will have an exceptionally full agenda as we welcome three new Directors, and new Committee members, and get them up to speed with the CSA programs currently under way, as well as discuss ideas for new programming.

One of the items on the Breed Improvement Committee agenda will be a review of the CSA Upgrading Table and the difference that exists between using a 7/8 male or a female when upgrading, specifically in the mating of a 7/8 male to a ½ blood female which at this time is recognized as a ½ blood by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada (AAFC). A 7/8 female mated to a ½ blood male however will result in a ¾ blood offspring. As is the case with all Livestock Breed Associations, the Canadian Simmental Association membership must approve any proposed revisions to its by-laws, including the upgrade table, and submit them to AAFC for their review and approval to ensure they fulfill the requirements of the Animal Pedigree Act which is under the authority of the Federal Minister of Agriculture. This is important to mention as some CSA members do not fully understand the process to make these changes, and that it is not solely a CSA board decision but also requires CSA membership and then Government approval.

If you have any items that you would like discussed at the November CSA Committee or Board meetings feel free to contact myself or any CSA director.

The YCSA will be having a mail-in vote by its membership on whether or not to revise the animal ownership rules for their Provincial and National Classics. Currently the animals shown must be registered in the YCS member’s name or that of their immediate family. It is felt by some that this is a deterrent for non-Simmental youth, or those from a distance traveling to the National Classic, who wish to show in the YCSA shows. This mail-in ballot process will follow the same method as the CSA’s voting and results will be known in December. The Ontario YCSA has also requested a review of the rule in the YCSA by-laws which prevents adult and parental involvement at their shows. Older YCSA members assisting younger members was one of the fundamental reasons that the upper age limit for the YCSA was established at 25 years old, and restricting parental involvement has been part of the YCSA rules and bylaws since it was established 40 years ago. Any changes to those require a process of approval by the National YCS membership and the CSA.

Over the past 2 months CSA staff have been working on the re-design of the CSA website to update and move to a more current operating platform that will be easier for CSA staff to update and maintain. The old website design software has served us well for the past number of years but has become very dated. This will not affect the CSA’s online data entry program that is used by a large percentage of our members and is very popular with them. Look for the new version of www.simmental.com to be launched sometime in October.

Lastly there are some excellent Simmental cattle for sale in the upcoming months and if you are in the market for a group of Simmental females to expand your herd, or are looking for next year’s YCSA show prospect be sure to check them out!

What is a Work Order 1?

Those with cattle in the evaluation are likely to have never heard of it, but it is important to the EPD on your animals. Let’s put some context around what WO1 is, and more importantly why changing the EPD model over time is important.

What Does This Mean?

The vast majority of animals will see very little change in their EPD with these new changes, however as a complete system, the new changes result in a better assessment or prediction of the relative merit for a trait. You may see changes in specific animals, particularly when they fit into some of the above categories or are influenced by multiple changes. For example, most calves will see very little change, but a calf from a first calf heifer that was weighed at birth using a hoof tape and has been DNA tested is more likely to see some change than a calf that fits none of those categories. Again, it is not that the previous evaluation was wrong, just that the new methodology does a better job. A good farmer analogy for genetic evaluation would be that we started with a tractor, but we have added a cab, air conditioning, front wheel assist and more horsepower over time. WO1 is akin to the addition of GPS and autosteer.

The IGS group made the WO1 changes to the models and removed the last two years worth of animals (2019 and 2020). They then calculated EPD using the data up to and including 2018. They then took these EPD and used them to work backwards and predict the actual performance/phenotypes of those 2019 and 2020 calves. The new evaluation did a better job of predicting the performance of the 2019/2020 calves than the old one did. The new EPD model predicted phenotypes more accurately than the old one, meaning the changes resulted in a better prediction.

How Do We Know it is Better?

There is no point in making a change to the evaluation if it does not result in a better prediction. So the final question is, how do we know that WO1 results in a better prediction? The proof is surprisingly simple.

Final Note

Science will continue to march on, and our knowledge of beef cattle genetics, DNA, computer science and other factors will mean that we continue to advance genetic evaluation. We will continue to see changes to the IGS evaluation that are based in better science and improved models. While it can be stressful to see an EPD change on an individual animal, it is important to the industry that we continue to improve the evaluation and the service that EPD can provide to the industry.

“We received some guidance and direction from some of the CSA adults, but otherwise we were left to ourselves,” says Rothlisberger. “As a bunch of kids we had a lot of ideas running through our heads, but generally we wanted an organization that would be useful and relevant to young Simmental producers.

We came up with a plan for the organization, presented it to the adults, and they really did listen.” The Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA) was born.

Although he helped with some of the initial planning, unfortunately Rothlisberger wasn’t able to be too involved in the launch of YCSA program across Canada as a busy life and education took him in another direction. Quentin Stevick left Highfield about mid-way through 1981 with Rothlisberger hired as the temporary show herdsman, until the replacement herdsman, Brett Walters, was able to start at Highfield in late summer.

But the excitement didn’t end there. Rothlisberger had in 1980 bought a Simmental heifer, 880M, that produced a dark red bull calf. A purebred cow-calf pair that Highfield was planning to show in the fall of 1981 just didn’t make the grade, so although Rothlisberger had already left for college in New Mexico the decision was made to take his cow and calf to the Canadian National Simmental Show at FarmFair in Edmonton.

“It turns out that pair won the Reserve Champion at the Canadian National event, which was very exciting,” says Rothlisberger. The bull calf sold for $11,000 at FarmFair. So when the cow was going to be shown at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina in November, he flew back to Canada for the event.

“I did the showing at Agribition and that heifer was named the champion female,” he says. “After the show that heifer sold for $25,000. It was just an amazing feeling. I can still remember the tingling feeling and the emotion as she was named the top female at the largest Simmental show in North America.”

Immediately after graduating from college with his first degree in Ranch Business Management, Rothlisberger worked as a show herdsman for different purebred operations, before returning to college to earn his Master’s Degree in Extension Education. Inspired by Chuck Groeneveld he began working as a county 4-H agent in New Mexico, although later spent most of his career in Utah.

Rothlisberger and his wife Sheri, live at Vernal, Utah they have six children and now also have two grandchildren. Their youngest son Stetson is 15 and still actively involved in the jr Livestock and Beef Program. While Darrell worked in 4-H, Sheri was a teacher in the FFA (Future Farmers of America) program which is a program offered widely in many high school across the U.S. “In some respects it wasn’t a long time, but my time in Alberta taught me a great deal and helped shaped my thinking that has been so helpful in my career,” says Rothlisberger.

“Being involved with some of the early planning of the YCSA program, for example, was even useful here in Utah as I was involved with a group creating what is known as the Rocky Mountain Junior Jackpot Show Series. This is a series of shows where young people can show steers, heifers, lambs and pigs.

There are about a dozen of these shows held and they are very big and very popular. I wasn’t the main organizer, but it was part of that experience with YCSA and the idea of helping youth have a voice in planning that was part of what I was able to contribute.”

n est arrivé dans la dernière partie de 2020 et, avec l’arrivée des couleurs de l’automne, les producteurs vache-veau procèdent au sevrage de leurs veaux, tout en complétant leurs travaux de récolte des céréales. Pour certains, ces tâches sont déjà complétées, alors que les ventes de veaux d’embouche ont démarré avec des prix plutôt soutenus. Un peu partout au Canada, les bons veaux plus lourds et les veaux semi-finis au pâturage rapportent entre 1500 $ et 1600 $, ce qui correspond à un prix significativement meilleur que ce qu’on anticipait lors de la mise à l’herbe au printemps.

Il faut espérer que ces prix demeureront bons alors que l’offre de veaux s’accroitra dans les encans.

De plus, les réunions du Conseil d’administration et de ses comités habituellement tenus durant la troisième semaine d’octobre sont également un signe que l’automne est bien arrivé. Toutefois, puisque les expositions d’automne n’ont pas lieu cette année, les administrateurs ont décidé de reporter ces réunions un mois plus tard, de telle sorte qu’elles auront lieu du 15 au 17 novembre prochain à Calgary. L’agenda de ces rencontres sera très chargé car nous accueillerons trois nouveaux administrateurs, ainsi que de nouveaux membres des comités, et que nous devons les informer adéquatement au sujet des programmes de l’ASC, tout en discutant de nouveaux programmes.

Au niveau du comité d’amélioration de la race, on discutera notamment des normes actuelles de l’Association Simmental par rapport au croisement d’absorption, en particulier en ce qui concerne la différence présentement observée entre un mâle et une femelle identifiée comme étant 7/8 Simmental. Plus spécifiquement, on s’attardera à la situation lorsqu’un accouple un mâle 7/8 avec une femelle à ½ sang, dont le descendant produit est présentement reconnu comme étant ½ par Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada (AAC). Le résultat d’un accouplement entre une femelle 7/8 avec un mâle ½ produira un sujet ¾ de sang.

Aussi, tel que cela est le cas avec toutes les autres associations de bovins, les membres de l’Association Simmental du Canada doivent approuver tout changement proposé aux statuts et aux règlements, y compris en ce qui concerne les exigences pour le croisement d’absorption. Ces changements doivent ensuite être transmis chez AAC afin qu’ils puissent être révisés et afin de s’assurer qu’ils respectent les exigences de la Loi sur la généalogie sur les animaux, laquelle est sous la responsabilité ultime du Ministre de l’agriculture du Canada.

Il est important de préciser cette démarche, car certains membres ne maitrisent pas nécessairement le fonctionnement de tels changements.

En fait, cela n’est pas une décision prise par le Conseil d’administration, mais il faut plutôt d’abord obtenir le consentement des membres de l’ASC, puis celui du Gouvernement canadien.

L’Association des jeunes éleveurs Simmental (« YCSA ») fera parvenir à ses membres un bulletin de vote par la poste, dans le but de valider s’ils désirent ou non que les règlements soient révisés en ce qui concerne la propriété d’un animal présenté dans les Classiques provinciales et nationales. Présentement, l’animal exposé doit être soit enregistré au nom du membre des “YCSA” ou d’une personne faisant partie de sa famille immédiate. Certaines personnes pensent que cela a un effet dissuasif chez les jeunes qui ne sont pas éleveurs Simmental, ou bien ceux qui participent à des telles Classiques Nationales et qui désirent participer au jugement des « YCSA ». On utilisera la même méthode de vote que celle en vigueur à l’ASC pour ce vote postal et les résultats seront rendus disponibles en décembre.

L’Association ontarienne des “YCSA” demande également une révision des statuts et règlements des “YCSA”, lesquels empêchent la participation des adultes à leurs expositions. L’âge limite pour faire partie des “YCSA” a été fixée à 25 ans, fondamentalement afin de favoriser une entraide entre les membres plus vieux et les plus jeunes.

De plus, cette restriction touchant la participation des parents est incluse dans les statuts et règlements des “YCSA” depuis que l’association a été mise en place il y a quarante ans. Tout changement à ces statuts et règlements doit être approuvé par les membres nationaux des « YCSA » ainsi que par l’ASC.

Au cours des deux derniers mois, le personnel de l’ASC a travaillé à un renouvellement du design du site internet de l’ASC, dans le but de l’actualiser et de migrer vers une plateforme opérationnelle plus récente et plus conviviale à opérer pour le personnel de l’ASC. L’ancienne version du site internet nous a rendu de bons services pour un certain nombre d’années, toutefois elle était devenue désuète. Aucun effet ne sera perceptible pour notre programme de saisie de données en ligne, lequel est utilisé par un fort pourcentage des membres et est très apprécié de tous. Surveillez la nouvelle version du site www.simmental. com, laquelle sera lancée au cours du mois d’octobre.

Lice and Worm Treatments in the Fall

here has been lots of talk and questions from producers and large animal veterinarians regarding the strategy to get better effective lice and internal parasite control.

Especially in the last couple years across western Canada there has been a large increase in lice issues especially sucking lice. With increasing lice detection producers are searching to find a new strategy that is effective yet doesn’t involve running cattle through the chute. I hope this article may give you several options.

We know lice prefer the cooler temperatures of fall and winter to multiply and be evident and seen on the common locations of cattle. We also know how quickly in the spring lice can transfer to the calves and cause the irritation and blood loss to calves trying to nurse and grow. Timing of treatment has improved our results.

Over time I believe we have gotten away from the very late fall and winter treatment. Cattle, if processed early in the fall Louse count diagram when temperatures were often warm, were treated out of convenience and we seemed to get away with it because of the residual properties of the ivermectin type products. On the flip side the freezing rate on these products is slightly below minus 10 degrees so applying slush affects absorption and perhaps efficacy. All things to consider when applying pour on products such as the macrocyclic lactones.

Researchers are checking into an actual resistance developing but it is appearing that is possibly the case. One improvement will be to get the timing right moving from late summer or early fall treatment to late fall should improve things somewhat. This should apply to feedlot cattle as well so maybe summer placed cattle need to be lice treated at first implant as an example. More to keep track of from a management perspective.

Alternate products such as the Group 3 insecticides with names such as Boss, Saber, De-Lice or Cylence can be used effectively. Again timing is critical and they are all pour on products with slight differences is formulation. Basically, they are lower volume pour-ons and are not systemic products. They have no effect on internal worms so only effective for external parasites that being lice, but some are effective on ticks and mange as well.

Ticks and mange mites are rarer but follow your veterinarian’s recommendations if these parasites are encountered. Some people are combining the late fall treatment of the ivermectin products together with an oral internal dewormer such as safeguard or

another in the benzimidazole class. One then follows up with the other insecticide pour-ons later in the winter if you see any clinical signs developing or as a routine to get a good treatment into them prior to calving. The other alternative is to go with the category three insecticides twice, as need to get the eggs later when they hatch, as they don’t have a long residual property. Either way should work fine but does involve most likely another treatment through the alleyway to apply products properly and get the best results. Others treat and watch for reoccurrence in the form of itching and hairloss.

Want to treat the whole herd as a unit at the right time so don’t leave any group untreated as a source of contamination and spread to the others. New introductions or purchases don’t forget to treat them on entry into the herd.

Other options include using cattle oilers and the products in them that are approved for cattle oilers. There are a few on the market with names like ectiban, pounce and others most having a pymethrin base. Many other products which were approved have been pulled from the market. I would use either canola oil or mineral oil in them to mix with the product. If you use the oilers in the summer for fly control I would pulse treat in the oilers at the times when they are present and pulse treat in the late fall or early winter for lice. Then don’t treat until the time when lice start to come back which has been January to February generally in Western Canada. Even the brushes in the pens are used by cattle and physically remove the lice and keep debris out of the hair. There is the issue of transmission, but lice spend their entire life cycle on the host so physically removing is a good thing.

Going forward we will find this two pronged approach to lice control is probably going to be necessary. Keep in mind with insecticides one must follow the label recommendations as unlike antibiotics prescriptions cannot be written by veterinarians for species not on the label. This makes if difficult for species like sheep or goats or bison where almost no insecticides have this species on the label. I am mentioning this in case any cattlemen also have these species on their farms and ranches.

We have gone along time really not having to deal with lice issues, but we need to address timing, alternating products and examining to see which lice are causing us problems in order to better determine the optimal treatment strategy.

It is safe to say that 2020 has been a challenging year due to uncertainties unleashed by the arrival of COVID-19 on Canadian soil. These unprecedent times have been difficult for cattle producers across Canada – especially our young producers. It has reaffirmed the importance of young producers having access to financing and affordable land to run profitable operations, the need for clear succession planning, and enhancing leadership development opportunities for youth considering a career in beef production. It continues to be a priority of our board to invest in the next generation who will lead our industry as well as ensuring that their perspectives and unique needs are communicated to policymakers in Ottawa.

The Young Cattlemen’s Council (YCC), established in 2013, attracts beef enthusiasts aged 18-40 from across Canada and offers youth leadership opportunities. Through the YCC, delegates can serve on Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) Policy Committees as non-voting members. This provides them with invaluable policy-setting experience and offers an important youth perspective on timely industry issues and priorities. YCC also works to be a conduit of information between industry organizations and the youth of the beef industry.

In early August, YCC held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) and welcomed Holly Thompson (SK) as President, Jessica Sperber (AB) as Vice President, Martin Clausen (AB), Kate Barnett (MB) and Susan Hamilton (Atlantic) as provincial delegates, and Carley Henniger (BC) as a Member at Large. We look forward to having all of you involved in future CCA initiatives.

I’d like to acknowledge and thank Ricky Seelhof (BC), Stefan Bouw (MB), Geoffrey Larkin (NS), and Ethan David (SK) for their contributions to YCC and the Canadian beef industry – I know this won’t be the last time that we will cross paths. We are also pleased that 2019 YCC President, Kayla Weston (AB), will remain on the YCC board for a third year as Past President.

CCA is also proud to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Mentorship Program this year, which was established to develop future leaders in Canada’s beef industry. CYL unveiled a special video presentation looking back on the last decade of the program during the virtual Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC). It was a fun way to thank and recognize all of the mentors, participants, program sponsors, and important people involved with the program over the years who have helped advance the program to where we’ve seen over 120 graduates since CYL was established in 2010. We were humbled to see the industry’s support and excitement surrounding this milestone. If you missed the special presentation, it is available for viewing on the CYL website and on CCA’s YouTube channel.

This year’s 24 CYL semi-finalists were selected from written applications across Canada. They then moved on to the annual CYL Selections event to compete for one of 16 spots in the upcoming program year. While the selection process is usually held at CBIC, this year the event shifted to a virtual format held on August 10, 2020.

Semi-finalists were judged on their participation in discussions with their peers concerning timely topics in the beef industry such as the COVID-19 pandemic, sustainability, and adopting precision agriculture technology. It is incredibly encouraging to see our next generation equipped with such strong enthusiasm, passion, and great ideas that will build upon the success of the Canadian beef industry.

Congratulations to this year’s 16 finalists! We are pleased to have finalists from British Columbia (2), Alberta (7), Saskatchewan (2), Manitoba (2), Ontario (2) and Prince Edward Island (1). These finalists will be paired with a hand-picked industry leader for their mentorship.

Stay tuned for future announcements on this year’s mentors on social media channels for CCA and the CYL program.

Also, we usually celebrate a group of CYL graduates crossing the stage at CBIC, but due to COVID-19 related cancellations of travel and networking opportunities, we are pleased to be able to extend their time in the program by another year. The 2020 class will be joining this new incoming class of CYLs to graduate in August 2021.

CCA also supports youth growth and development in the Canadian beef industry through our Student Internship Program. This program is committed to providing enriching opportunities focused in policy, research, advocacy, economics and market information, sustainable production, and industry outreach. This year, we were pleased to have Matthew Trefiak, a second-year student at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Agriculture and Bioresources, join us for the summer. He started remotely in early May due to COVID-19, but hit the ground running. He worked closely with the policy team on preparing briefing notes related to our recommendations to government to help beef producers mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 as well as assisting Canfax and the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) on projects. Thank you, Matthew, for your contributions to the team over the summer. We wish you well in this upcoming school year.

We are very proud of the accomplishments of our youth leadership programs. We look forward to continuing our Student Internship Program next summer and working closely with the YCC and CYL finalists to share their stories, experiences, and ideas to help further the priorities and goals of the beef industry in Ottawa. Amelioration de la Race

Qu’est-ce que le projet « Work Order 1 »?

eux qui travaillent dans le domaine de l’évaluation génétique réalisée par le groupe IGS (International Genetic Solutions) ont déjà entendu parler depuis quelque temps du projet « Work Order 1” (WO1).

Ceux qui possèdent des bovins inclus dans l’évaluation n’ont probablement jamais entendu parler de ce projet, toutefois celuici est très important pour les ÉPD de vos animaux. Prenons le temps de vous expliquer en quoi consiste le projet WO1 et pourquoi il est important de changer le modèle de calcul des ÉPD au fil des ans.

Premièrement, les ÉPD sont des Écarts Prévus chez la Descendance et ils sont des PRÉDICTIONS des différences au niveau de la variance génétique additive entre les animaux pour un caractère donné. Puisqu’ils sont des prédictions, plus on leur ajoute des informations, et plus on peut améliorer la précision de la prédiction. Prenez par exemple les prévisions de la météo, ce sont des prédictions. Si nos stores sont baissés et qu’on ne regarde pas dehors, ou bien si on se projette trop loin dans le futur, nos prédictions seront bien moins bonnes que si on prévoit la température qu’il fera cet après-midi. On a continué d’améliorer les ÉPD et les prédictions génétiques au fil des années. Par exemple, on a fait la transition du modèle du taureau au modèle animal d’évaluation génétique. Cela est survenu il y a plusieurs années et a été rendu possible en raison des progrès effectués avec la technologie informatique, lesquelles nous ont donc permis de pouvoir examiner les deux côtés du pedigree au lieu d’uniquement le modèle du père et du grandpère maternel. Cela ne signifie pas que nos prédictions étaient erronées, mais plutôt que les nouvelles sont tout simplement meilleures et qu’elles nous permettent d’inclure beaucoup plus d’information. La transition vers l’évaluation génomique en une seule étape est un autre bon exemple récent de progrès dû à l’avancement de la science et des capacités de la technologie informatique. Le projet “Work Order 1 (WO1)” est un autre exemple d’amélioration continue.

Quelles sont les améliorations avec le projet WO1?

Génomique révisée

Alors qu’on recueille de plus en plus de données de performance et de données sur l’ADN, on réévalue périodiquement les marqueurs d’ADN ou les « SNP » employés et qui nous fournissent des informations sur les divers caractères.

Cela est rendu possible grâce aux améliorations des puces d’ADN, à un accès à davantage ou de meilleurs « SNP » et à encore plus de données pour un caractère donné. Avec le projet WO1, cela implique des améliorations aux portions d’analyse génomique des évaluations génétiques, y compris une réanalyse de l’impact qu’apporte chaque SNP, ainsi que l’identification de nouveaux « SNP » ayant des influences sur d’autres caractères évalués.

Changement de la manière de faire les groupes pour les femelles au premier vêlage

Les ÉPD sont basés sur les performances d’un animal, relativement à celles de ses contemporains. Dans le passé, on groupait les veaux des femelles au premier vêlage ensemble avec n’importe lequel autre veau possédant les mêmes codes de régie, selon leur troupeau, leur sexe et leur âge. Les performances des veaux étaient ajustées selon l’âge de leur mère. Parmi les changements apportés avec le projet WO1, les veaux seront regroupés selon des critères similaires, toutefois tous les veaux provenant de femelles au premier veau seront dorénavant groupés séparément. Par rapport à l’évaluation génétique globale, ce changement fera en sorte qu’on tiendra mieux compte des différences entre les veaux qu’avec les anciens ajustements uniquement basés sur l’âge de la mère.

De plus, les données nous indiquent que dans plusieurs cas (en dépit des codes de régie), que les veaux provenant de femelles au premier veau sont gérés de manière sensiblement différente de celle des veaux issus de vaches matures.

Ajustement pour les poids à la naissance

Avec le projet WO1, on a également changé les ajustements au poids à la naissance. Ainsi, le système employé par le centre IGS possède des algorithmes permettant de déterminer

si le poids à la naissance a été obtenu avec une balance, un ruban de mesure du canon, ou bien qu’ils aient été estimés à l’œil. Ces données de poids sont utilisées différemment par le système. Les poids réels sont évalués directement entre eux, les poids obtenus avec un ruban sont utilisés en fonction d’une corrélation avec le caractère, tandis que les poids estimés approximativement sont retirés de l’évaluation du poids à la naissance.

Variance hétérogène

On sait que les différences de performance sont plus élevées entre les groupes de veaux mâles qu’ils peuvent l’être entre des groupes de veaux femelles. En fait, dans un groupe de veaux mâles, la gamme des performances est plus étendue que dans un groupe similaire de veaux femelles. Avec le projet WO1, on a mis à jour la manière d’utiliser l’information dans l’évaluation, afin de mieux tenir compte des différences entre les individus, ce qui nous permet d’obtenir une évaluation plus précise.

Changement des valeurs de corrélation entre la croissance et l’aptitude laitière

Nous savons que certains gènes peuvent avoir une influence sur plus d’un caractère, on peut donc utiliser l’information disponible sur un caractère afin d’obtenir des informations sur un autre caractère. Par exemple, nous connaissons bien le fait que les gènes ayant un impact sur le poids au sevrage ont également un impact sur le poids à un an, alors on peut utiliser l’information sur le poids au sevrage d’un veau donné afin de mieux prédire le potentiel génétique de ce veau pour le poids à un an, et cela même avant qu’il soit âgé d’un an. Auparavant, dans l’évaluation génétique d’IGS, on utilisait une corrélation de – 0,30 entre le poids au sevrage et l’aptitude laitière. Pour un veau possédant une très grande déviation du poids au sevrage (poids très supérieur à la moyenne du groupe), le résultat conduisait à une baisse de la valeur ÉPD en lait. Avec le projet WO1, la corrélation est ramenée à 0,00. La performance de croissance peut donc toujours avoir une influence sur l’ÉPD en lait (rappelez-vous que nous calculons l’ÉPD en lait comme étant la composante maternelle du poids au sevrage), toutefois cela réduit l’influence négative de la croissance au niveau de l’ÉPD en lait, plus spécifiquement pour les taureaux avec une faible précision des ÉPD ou bien chez les jeunes taureaux.

Qu’est-ce que ça veut dire pour moi ?

Avec ces nouveaux changements, vous ne verrez que de très faibles changements des ÉPD pour la vaste majorité des animaux. Toutefois, d’une manière globale avec le nouveau système, les nouveaux changements procurent une meilleure évaluation ou prédiction du mérite relatif pour un caractère donné. Vous pourrez constater des changements pour des animaux spécifiques, en particulier s’ils ont été affectés par certains des changements expliqués plus haut ou bien qu’ils

aient été influencés par plusieurs changements. Par exemple, peu de changements seront visibles chez la plupart des veaux, par contre si on a un veau provenant d’une femelle au premier vêlage qui a été pesé à la naissance avec un ruban et pour lequel on a effectué un test d’ADN, on peut s’attendre à ce qu’il ait subi certains changements. Encore une fois, ce n’est pas parce que l’évaluation précédente était mauvaise, mais plutôt qu’avec la nouvelle technologie, on obtient une meilleure évaluation. Si on veut illustrer le tout pour un producteur agricole, on est parti avec un tracteur, puis on a ajouté au fil des ans une cabine, de l’air climatisé, la servo-direction assistée sur les roues avant et plus de forces de moteur. Avec le projet WO1, cela équivaut à ajouter le GPS et le pilotage automatique.

Comment peut-on savoir que c’est mieux ?

Il ne servirait à rien de faire des changements à une évaluation si on n’obtenait pas une meilleure prédiction. Alors, à titre de dernière question, comment peut-on savoir si le projet WO1 nous permet d’obtenir de meilleures prédictions ? La preuve est étonnamment simple.

La performance ou le phénotype d’un animal est le résultat de l’interaction de son bagage génétique avec son environnement.

P=GxE

Le groupe IGS a effectué les changements du projet WO1 au modèle d’évaluation, puis ils ont retiré les animaux nés dans les deux dernières années (2019 et 2020). Ils ont ensuite calculé les ÉPD en utilisant les données incluses jusqu’à et incluant l’année 2018. Ils ont ensuite utilisé ces ÉPD, tout en travaillant à l’envers afin de prédire les performances réelles et les phénotypes des veaux de 2019 et de 2020. La prédiction des performances réalisées avec la nouvelle évaluation fut bien meilleure que celle obtenue avec l’ancien modèle d’évaluation.

Le nouveau modèle de calcul des ÉPD a prédit les phénotypes de manière plus précise que l’avait fait l’ancien modèle, ce qui signifie que les changements apportés ont permis d’obtenir de meilleures prédictions.

Dernière remarque

La science continuera d’avancer, et nos connaissances de la génétique des bovins, de leur ADN, la technologie des ordinateurs et d’autres facteurs feront en sorte qu’on poursuivra l’amélioration des évaluations génétiques. On continuera de voir apparaitre des changements aux évaluations calculées par IGS, lesquelles sont basées sur de meilleures connaissances scientifiques et des modèles améliorés d’évaluation. Malgré le fait que cela soit stressant de constater des changements aux ÉPD d’un sujet donné, il demeure très important qu’on poursuive les améliorations aux évaluations et les services que peuvent rendre les ÉPD à toute l’industrie.

1. Heat oil in a large, nonstick skillet set over medium-high heat. Crumble in beef. Stir in c umin, salt, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, coriander and garlic. Cook , breaking up into small crumbles, for 5 to 7 minutes or until browned.

2. Stir in rice and beans until well combined. Add 3 c ups water.

he COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions on public gatherings was taking effect in Canada in the heart of the 2020 bull sale season. This could have been devastating to our farmers and ranchers, but our industry quickly adapted, and bulls sold at prices similar to those of the previous year. This demonstrates the resiliency of Canadian cattle producers and something that we can be all be proud of. We are now heading into the fall and the pandemic continues. While restrictions are slowly being lifted, there are still many in place that will disrupt our normal business operations into the new year. The restrictions and timelines for opening economies are different for each country, province and state. In some cases it varies within a province, which makes this situation even more complex. Despite these impacts, we now have the advantage of time to prepare for the fall run of feeder calf, production sales and harvest.

We need to recognize that restrictions on international travel and between some regions within Canada will continue for the foreseeable future. It is important to communicate with our American and Mexican friends that Canadian beef cattle genetics are still able to be transported across the border with similar requirements that were in place prior to the pandemic. This also applies to other international destinations although delays should be expected, and we need to plan accordingly.

Canadian cattle and genetics can move, it is people that are facing travel and gathering restrictions. The cattle business in Canada is still open for business.

Agriculture was deemed an essential

service early in the pandemic and under most circumstances cattle producers are able to cross the Canada/USA border to conduct business, which includes the transportation, purchasing of cattle and providing services. At the time of writing this article the Canada/USA border is still closed to non-essential travel, so if you are planning to cross you will need to ensure your documentation is in place and you can demonstrate the nature of your business in the other country. Every situation is different and depending on circumstances and reason for travel your eligibility to cross the border will vary. I recommend searching relevant websites for up to date information. They should include the Government of Canada Public Health Agency (canada.ca), Canadian Food Inspection Agency (inspection.gc.ca), as well as your provincial health agency site and the one that you will be travelling to. There are still health protocols such as quarantine periods in place that need to be adhered to for everyone’s safety. Confirm eligibility and requirements for travel early in your or international buyers planning process to avoid unnecessary disruptions and delays.

If you are attending or hosting a production sale this fall, we have developed a set of recommended guidelines that will help you prepare and ensure your friends, customers, employees and family remain healthy. limit attendance to comply with provincial and regional health regulations signage should be posted at the entrance and in high-traffic areas within the facility, clearly displaying guidelines and protocols for attendance consider a sign-in process with contact information including cell numbers to track sale attendees where possible, make internet or phone bidding available have the cattle available for viewing prior to the sale consider online photos and videos for those who are not able to view in person restrict general public access on sale day seating in sale ring area must be clearly marked, accommodating physical distancing requirements international and out of province visitors should be advised to take extra precautions avoid contact (do not shake hands) and maintain a social distance of 6-feet provide hand sanitizer and disposable masks to attendees request the use of masks in common areas such as the sale ring area if food is provided, serve in individual packages and avoid buffet style sanitize workstations and eating areas including special attention to places and equipment shared by more than one person on a regular basis.

Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup 2020 Press Release August 17, 2020

Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup was to have celebrated their 13th Annual weekend on August Long weekend 2020. Due to COVID, the Roundup committee decided to have a workshop on How To Take Cattle Photos with Morgan llg.

The competitions were: Photography and Graphic Marketing. Exhibitors Blake Airey, Chase Airey, Brogan Birmingham, Taylor Carlson, Dylan Frey, Reegan Frey Kyleigh Magotiaux, ,Katherine Possberg, Madisyn Robertson,and Alaina Verwey participated in the events.

Everyone will get a Roundup 2020 award for their efforts and you can view the photos and marketing items on the Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup facebook page and our website https://mbyouthbeefroundup.weebly.com.

In 2020, Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup will award 2 scholarships $1000 to Taylor Carlson of Elm Creek. Taylor will be attending Lakeland College to study Animal Science Technology with a Beef Science Major. Taylor has been a 4-H member since she was 8 years old and very active in the 4-H program, the Manitoba Director on the Canadian Junior Shorthorn Board, Sunday school teacher and currently Co President of the Student Council to name a few. Taylor has attended Roundup for the past 7 years and currently is a director on the MYBR board. Along with owning her own Shorthorn cattle she is also very passionate about Ag vocation, an educational Livestock Display that her family has created to share the truth about animal agriculture. $500 to Levi Best of Harding. Levi will be attending Apprenticeship Manitoba in specializing in Welding for 3 years. Levi has attended Roundup the last 12 years and is involved in the Manitoba Beef industry with his own herd of Angus cattle. Levi grew up in the 4-H program in Rivers 4-H Beef and in 2019 was the President of the Manitoba Junior Angus Association. Levi keeps busy with welding and his LB Custom Clipping.

Congratulations Wyatt William Harvie was born June 14, 2020 at 7:39pm St Albert, AB, weighing 6 lbs 13 oz and a long 19.5 cm to Will and Stephani Harvie and sister Taylor. Proud grandparents are Ian & Marlene Harvie of Harvie Ranching, Olds, AB and Laura & Andrew Maile, St. Albert, AB.

Our Deepest Sympathies Earl Lloyd Ballard passed away peacefully on September 5, 2020. Earl was born in 1927 to Reuben and Lillian Ballard of Hanley, SK. He attended Blue Hills School, Saskatoon Technical School, and the U of S before returning to the family farm. One of the first to import Simmental cattle, Lost River Ranches became central to the Simmental community, leading to Earl’s induction into the Canadian Simmental Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement.

Earl loved dancing and music, playing piano and violin. While singing in the Sunny Valley Church Choir, Earl met and eventually married school teacher Jeanette Denomy, with whom he had two daughters, Bev and Shelley.

Earl was always involved in the community, proudly serving as councillor for Lost River Municipality, president of the Sunny Valley Wheat Pool, and on the Saskatchewan and Canadian Simmental Association executives.

After passing farm operations on to the next generation, Earl opened David’s Restaurant in Saskatoon, where he became well-known for his friendly and welcoming nature. Upon selling David’s, Earl moved on to various part-time positions, including Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers where he continued to be known for his hard work ethic despite being by far the oldest employee. It just wasn’t in his nature to “retire.”

In 1999, Earl married school teacher Elaine Borden, with whom he spent the rest of his life. He must have had a thing for school teachers!

Earl travelled the world, beginning with trips to cattle shows in Europe and South Africa with Jeanette, following Shelley on adventures through Asia, a historical tour of France and Belgium with Bev, trips to Scotland and enjoying his winter home in Arizona with Elaine.

In 2009, three-generations of the family trekked to Machu Picchu in Peru where, at the age of 82, Earl became one of the oldest to ever complete the Inca Trail.

Earl will be lovingly remembered by his wife Elaine; daughter Shelley (Andrew); grandkids Andrew (Gretchen), Nicole (Austen), Julie (Kurt); great-grandkids Karsten, Kore, Sigrid; son-in-law Al; brother Elmer; step-children Lesley (Andy), Scott (Shari), Marnie (Francois) and their children Megan, Alyssa, Connor, Aaron, Aiden; and many other family members and friends. He was predeceased by wife Jeanette; daughter Bev; son-in-law Ross; siblings Lila, Melvin, and Lyle.

Our family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staff of Home Instead, Luther Heights Intermediate Care Home and ward 5200 at Royal University Hospital for their many kindnesses in helping us care for Earl.
